When I saw the title of this thread, I feared it had something to do with pseudo-historian David Barton turning his attention re-writing the history of the Civil War!

Egypt has the potential to swing any which way from secular democracy, theocracy, to Mubarak going full on psycho. I hope for the first option, don't rate the second option as the most likely, and cringe at the thought of the third option.

Donald Rumsfeld has a memoir coming out:[Link: www.thedailybeast.com...]

Yes, and he's already feuding with John McCain over its content:

The McCain-Rumsfeld feud continues with new jabs on both sides, fueled by the release of the former defense secretary's new book.

Quoting from Rumsfeld's upcoming book "Known and Unknown" during an interview on ABC's "Good Morning America," George Stephanopoulos asked McCain to respond to the charge that he has a "hair-triggered temper" and "a propensity to shift his positions to appeal to the media."

The 2008 Republican presidential nominee said "thank God he (Rumsfeld) was relieved of his duties and we put the surge in, otherwise we would have had a disastrous defeat in Iraq."

The two men famously clashed during former President George W. Bush's second term in office. Rumsfeld was the lead architect of the invasion into Iraq in 2003, with which McCain publicly disagreed. The senator was in favor of the war but felt more troops were needed for the incursion to be successful.

"He and I had a very, very strong difference of opinion about the strategy that he was employing in Iraq, which I predicted was doomed to failure," McCain said.

What happened in Egypt today. I had to work and don't know a thing.

Lots of take downs of reporters and other media. Lost of propaganda and BS from the Mubarak gov't ---implying the cause of the protest is due to foreign influence and media from 'brotherly nations'.
Lots of groups of thugs walking around and beating people. Police vehicle and a firetruck ran over people. Minor skirmishes at the edges of the square. May have been a few people killed by sniper fire. Mostly though protester built up barricades and defended the square. Night was relatively calm in comparison to last night.

Now it's morning and no one knows what's going to happen. Massive protest planned today.

Here's a rundown by the NYT:

The Egyptian government on Thursday broadened its crackdown on a 10-day uprising that has shaken its rule, arresting journalists and human rights advocates across an edgy city, while offering more concessions in a bid to win support from a population growing frustrated with a devastated economy and scenes of chaos in the streets.

Senator Patrick Leahy, the chairman of the panel that controls foreign aid, said he’s prepared to stop all U.S. financial assistance to Egypt -- which topped $1.5 billion last year -- unless Mubarak steps aside immediately and allows a transitional government to take over.

“If he doesn’t leave, there will not be foreign aid; I mean, it’s as simple as that,” Leahy, a Vermont Democrat, told Bloomberg Television in an interview yesterday. U.S. money “will not go to the Mubarak administration,” Leahy said, adding, “that’s a pipeline that can easily be turned off.”

• US and Egyptian officials are working on a plan for Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak to stand down immediately, and replaced by a three-man junta, according to a report in the New York Times

• Mubarak remained defiant in an interview with ABC News's Christiane Amanpour, saying: "If I resign today, there will be chaos"

• Fighting saw estimates of the death toll around Cairo's Tahrir Square rise to 13, with hundreds more injured, as protesters fortified the centre of the square

• Protesters are gearing up for an expected mass demonstration on Friday

• Attacks aimed at journalists and TV crews forced media off the streets and reduced the coverage of events in central Cairo

The pro-democracy protesters are unarmed and have been peaceful at every step. But the pro-Mubarak thugs are arriving in buses and are armed — and they’re using their weapons.

In my area of Tahrir, the thugs were armed with machetes, straight razors, clubs and stones. And they all had the same chants, the same slogans and the same hostility to journalists. They clearly had been organized and briefed. So the idea that this is some spontaneous outpouring of pro-Mubarak supporters, both in Cairo and in Alexandria, who happen to end up clashing with other side — that is preposterous.

AT first, I had to think about it, but I think it really shows a class division in Egypt. There seem to be a lot of "educated" people protesting. In a sense, I got the feeling that the "elites" that were interviewed were what we would consider "racist."

Any time you call one group "elite" you run into that kind of thinking. But worrying that the "uneducated" might run your country into the ground is not groundless racism in and of itself. Don't we worry about illiterate and ingorant people destroying the Texas School Board, building an Ark themed amusement park with tax subsidies, stopping stem cell research, etc. etc.? Right now, most of Egypt is probably afraid of what tomorrow will bring. (Still, I don't think the protesters are all that "uneducated". The mobs always are. But the public face so far seems pretty literate.)

Well, we don't worry about the illiterate, just the stupid. There is a difference. We also don't deny them their rights under the law or justify imprisoning them without the proper protocols.

I used the word "elite" because that is how these men were described by the journalist. I think they are "elite" because they are on the side of the the power base. They are shittin' scared they might lose their edge and have to compete with rest of the populace on an equal footing.

Did anyone hear the story on NPR today of the DC gal who was on a birthday trip to Cairo (she works for the ACLU) and was caught up?

I can't help but think of that pic. It really look that people are walking around in a circle. That's what they do in Mecca and pray to God. I really think that is what they are doing,

191 Jadespring  Thu, Feb 3, 2011 10:16:43pm

Okay. I'm going to go to bed. Can't stay up forever. Here's hoping to wake up to good or at least okay news from Egypt.

I don't think so. If you look everyone isn't facing the same direction and some people look like theyre just standing and talking.

3 am EST. So 8 am I think. The first prayers already happened.

From what I can figure out 2AM ET

re: #195 ggt

Depends on which prayer you're talking about. The one I think they're most concerned about is the lunch time prayer. Only an hour or so away...

I hope she's OK. A friend of mine made it out just in time.

She was in London. Made it out. She said a huge group came towards their bus in Cairo, but once they saw the majority of the bus was African American they gave them peace signs, and escorted them to their hotel, through barricades etc. Verry interesting.

If you want, find it on NPR website & listen.

re: #187 ggt
Of course they are. They are elites. That's how they see themselves. Are you assuming what I'm saying is that it's okay to use fear as an excuse to hold anyone down, falsely inprison them, or deny them rights? No. What I am saying is, those people are SCARED. A lot of folks there are right now. When people get scared, things get worse. A lot of violent racism is based in fear. We in this country are actually witnessing a similar if less extreme version. I actually think we do fear uneducated people, not just stupid people. I do. Not that by "educated" I mean possessing a college degree. But the level of ignorance passing itself off as "common wisdom" or "street smarts" is astounding and not good for the country as a whole. Putting uneducated people at the reins of a modern country could actually bring it down. So fear is to be expected and if not addressed and allayed, will make the situation worse.

We have such problems . . .

Sorry to hear about it tho, seriously, I know how it gnaws at a person. We are a sales family as well.

It ain't the sales. My sales netted me more money than expected. But there is still a gap. Luckily, I know how I can fill it. I'll get through this month without a problem. And that is a Good Thing.

Gee, what a "surprise." It's far right crap. Why am I not surprised considering who posted it. Grr aargh. Not to discount the Muslim Brotherhood problem and threat. It's absolutely real. But it's getting so that I have to fact check everything from everybody.

Uh, yeah. Sorry. Missed that. JWR is not much in the journalistic race of life.
