Mubarak resigns, but not really
Middle East • Views: 32,053

CBS News reports that Hosni Mubarak has resigned from Egypt’s ruling party.

CAIRO - State TV reports that President Hosni Mubarak has resigned from Egypt’s ruling party.

His son, Gamal Mubarak, and the National Democratic Party’s secretary-general, Safwat el-Sharif, have also resigned, in a new gesture to protesters carrying out a 12-day-old wave of anti-government demonstrations.

And an empty “gesture” is exactly what this is, because Mubarak is not stepping down from the presidency.

UPDATE at 2/5/11 10:40:04 am

The latest reports now say that Mubarak has not resigned from the NDP, although others have.

I heard yesterday that Mubarak has pocketed something like $75B. Might be a good time to say adios and hop on the private jet.

Twitter is talking about this and saying that this info may be premature. They’re saying that State tv is reporting resignation of others and not Mubarak himself.

Not saying it’s not correct only that people there are questioning whether it’s correct.

I think he does. He was in the military his entire adult life before Sadat made him vice-president. I don’t think he’s willing to slink off into the night and live his last years sick and in exile. I think he’d rather either leave on his own terms or go down in a hail of gunfire.

The plan I’ve been hearing is that Mubarak accepts some sort of reduced capacity, but does not resign, until new elections are called within 60 days. The issue is that only an elected president can dismiss parliament.

Another day, another smear.

I’d like to know when I “forbade” anyone from posting anywhere else.

What I have said, and I make no apology for it, is that if someone with an LGF account starts posting nasty comments at one of the blogs that stalks me, I will block their account, immediately.

Robert Stacy McCain, by the way, deletes a lot of comments at his website, and blocks people who disagree with him. For some reason, that’s supposed to be A-OK, but if I block someone who advocates wiping out entire races of people or napalming peaceful protesters, I’m a Stalinesque monster.

I haven’t been able to find any concrete and detailed ‘how did he get all the money’ info or at least when I was looking yesterday. May be more out now.
What I did find out that it appears to be through ownership stakes in companies that get contracts (many of which use aid money) and companies that have taken over where things have been privitizedand ownership in supposedly state owned companies. There’s some sort of law that any money coming into the country whether aid or investment has to be connected with an Egyptian counterpart and Mubarak and those close to him own 51% shares in those companies.

So if this is correct it’s definitely a scam of sorts but not necessarily an illegal one. So technically he didn’t ‘steal’ the money he and his family set up system where they were profiting from all sorts of money coming into and made by the country. Odious of course and quite disgusting.

75 billion is a nice piece of change. Even at today’s price of gold, that’s enough to buy 50 million troy ounces of gold, which comes to about one and a half million kilos of the stuff.

If Mubarak peed gold, he’d have to live another 40 years to piss away that much gold.

It’s not like he needs the money so he can do a Bill Gates and use it to cure malaria.

Will who comes next be any better? There’s been worse. Mubarak’s day is over, and there are grounds for hope. The people making this revolution need to be very much on guard that it isn’t stolen from them the way the Kerensky revolution was stolen by the Bolsheviks. Don’t put a Lenin into the cabinet, especially not in any of the key positions. Don’t imagine that it’s good enough that you good guys have most of the slots. Defense, police, finances…the rest are just window dressing.

Glenn Beck actually favors the evil Wario, because Wario is smart enough to hoard the gold he finds. So when Obama collapses the economy to serve the designs of George Soros, Wario will be in good shape with his stockpile of gold and survival rations.

I posted a link last night about Arafat’s billions. This is what dictators do.

So far, Prince’s team has determined that part of the Palestinian leader’s wealth was in a secret portfolio worth close to $1 billion — with investments in companies like a Coca-Cola bottling plant in Ramallah, a Tunisian cell phone company and venture capital funds in the U.S. and the Cayman Islands.

Although the money for the portfolio came from public funds like Palestinian taxes, virtually none of it was used for the Palestinian people; it was all controlled by Arafat. And, Prince says, none of these dealings were made public.

Arafat was Egyptian for what it’s worth, but it doesn’t matter. The ruling class in these regimes live high off the hog while their people suffer.

And to clarify a bit what I said about McCain’s “virus” comment. It’s not that the people are terrorists. They aren’t. They’re suffering. But with these violent coups, they often end up with phony/corrupt elections and the terrorist factions move into power. That’s the fear around the world now.

Part of what appears to be going on now. Is the message from the gov’t is that they want communication from the protesters. Want them to be involved somehow. Yet a number are being arrested or just disappearing right now. Lots of people saying the safest place right now is in the square because when some people leave they’re going ‘off the grid’ so to speak.

I’m currently taking a course on Soviet history, so right now we’re discussing the October Revolution.

What’s really interesting to note about the Provisional government was that while they were really freaking stupid, the war made everything about 20 times worse and was what really pushed the Commies in charge. In looking at the various discussions over what elections are to be held and so on as regards to Egypt, I am not quite sure to what degree the ordinary Egyptians are in crisis. If they are in serious crisis, there’s a significant risk of them going to a quick fix, aka. a guy who can instantly come in and put matters to right. Which is of course a dictator.

They don’t see Charles as having self-respect. They see him as a fat, bitter, lonely person full of hatred. It’s called “projection”.

I don’t know if it’s projection so much as it is displacement.

They aren’t so much obsessed with CJ as they are with knocking him down. There is a difference.

No matter what they do, no matter how hard they try and no matter how concerted the effort, they can’t make CJ go away and they can’t make his voice less relevant to the conversation.

(The irony is exquisite. Same applies to Israel)

They see their efforts as a zero sum game- it’s either their voice or that of LGF. As long as LGF remains relevant, they see themselves as lessers.

It becomes personal because the stalkers are competing with CJ in the only arena they can compete-online. CJ has a public and accomplished life outside LGF, something they do not.

Lots of accomplished people don’t see eye to eye with CJ but you don’t see them obsessing. Why? Because they don’t have to. They have lives and families and live in a world where not every online breath and moment are necessary for their for the validation of their worth. As long as CJ was perceived to endorse some of their beliefs, they were fine. When CJ called them out on their excesses, they turned on him.

Unrepentant ideologues (or fill in blank).

48 Charles Johnson  Sat, Feb 5, 2011 9:29:28am

OK, I just read Robert Stacy McCain’s latest rant about me - that must be about the hundredth post he’s written about how insignificant and irrelevant I am. McCain quotes the stalkers to say I deleted the links in this post — gasp! How evil I must be! Why, I’m so evil I even added an update after removing the links to say why I did it.

And I notice that the morons at the stalker blog are getting even crazier — they apparently now believe that everything I do at LGF is a reaction to them, and refuse to believe that I don’t read every word they excrete.

Well, I don’t read their site. I made that vow last year, and I’ve kept it. There are people who occasionally email me about something the stalkers write, if they think I need to see it — like the occasional death threat or libelous comment.

I know, it’s hard to believe that not everybody in the world hates me with an overriding obsessed passion.

This is interesting… a government sponsored “hackers” agency…

It’s not the only step the U.S. government is taking to battle foreign censors. The global effort known as the Alliance of Youth Movements — started under former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and continued by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton with the help of Google and others — has been coaching democratic groups in advance on how to use social media to organize and circumvent governmental interference. Shortly after the Egyptian turmoil began, Google established a call-in line on which Egyptians could leave a voicemail, which could then be turned into messages distributed on Twitter.

As for the FOE technology, one of the conditions is that it requires the user, say in a country like China or Iran, to have an e-mail account with a foreign provider like Google’s Gmail.

The government report on the testing said the technology can carry news feeds as well as vital software applications like Tor, which helps Internet users stay anonymous online, and Freegate, which can be used to access blocked Internet content.

Well, I’m sure that this will completely placate the protestors.

OT: My dreams of seeing Chris Cornell in concert were just crushed.

It would be embarrasing if they couldn’t find him for his execution.

Today is Jennifer Jason Leigh’s 49th birthday. So that must mean that Fast Times at Ridgemont High was filmed, like, almost 30 years ago? I feel just a little bit older today.

I can console myself in the fact that Phoebe Cates is, indeed, still hot. (and Kevin Kline is one of the luckiest MFers on the planet.)

re: #48 Charles

They haven’t an honest bone in their bodies. From one of the comments at RSM, “The Diary of Daedelus is in the business of mockery, and not of personal assassination as Charles and some others would have you believe.” LOL Really? Really?? They’ve called you every nasty name in the book! They’re dedicated to removing LGF from the net and getting us to stop posting through lies, slander and humiliation. They’ve spent weeks conjuring up stories about Ludwig, scouring the net for his posts at other sites to claim he’s not really a Jew. And they have Jews there who think this is cool!

They have a 1000 pet names for their favorite LGF posters, all nasty and cruel. I’m marjoriemoonbat (how original). But hey we’re just playin wit ya!!

Hey GOTC, why don’t you tell your “Christian” friends over there that one of the #1 sins in the eyes of God is vicious gossip, that is spreading lies and slander about others. And before you accuse me of the same, nothing I said is untrue. Not a word of it. You of all people should know better.

Arrghhhh….

Ugh. For the most part, they are of no consequence. Little ankle biters and the only time they’re linked to is when someone wants to make fun of LGF. It’s not like their making any cutting edge statements on current affairs.

Blogging is more of a community thing now. You find a blog you like, you post there and have a camaraderie with others. It eats at them that Charles was one of the pioneers in this field.

Yes, and a nephew who was imprisoned by the current regime.

Is he respected by the regular Egyptian folks?

Considering footage of the protests: I fail to see how some people thought those guys belly dancing were from the Muslim brotherhood.
