You think FNC is going to try to memory hole this O’Reilly disaster, Charles?

Repeated from the Superbowl thread.

Can I just say as an non American, that I really like your President.
You all should be very proud.

I admire the America he believes in.

FNC definitely does have the right to request their materials be pulled from YT per the provisions of the DMCA. However, IMO, it doesn’t make it right, even if the clip makes O’Reilly look like a walking dick; seems like a case for fair use to me.

Shit, didn’t notice that since I’m at work and can’t really play it here. In that case, FNC is within their rights to have the file pulled; if it were an excerpt, fair use could apply, but not on the whole thing.

The WSJ op-ed page rushing to “defend” Palin against their own blogger was embarrassing. Palin unsurprisingly got the facts wrong.

Palin:

Mr. Reddy takes aim at this. He writes: “Grocery prices haven’t risen all that significantly, in fact.” Really? That’s odd, because just last Thursday, November 4, I read an article in Mr. Reddy’s own Wall Street Journal titled “Food Sellers Grit Teeth, Raise Prices: Packagers and Supermarkets Pressured to Pass Along Rising Costs, Even as Consumers Pinch Pennies.”

Reddy:

The Nov. 4 Wall Street Journal article noted, in its first sentence, “the tamest year of food pricing in nearly two decades.” It does indeed report that supermarkets and restaurants are facing cost pressures that could push their retail prices higher — but it hasn’t happened yet on a large scale. Critics of the Fed’s quantitative easing policy are focused primarily on concerns about potential future inflation.

Obviously not, yet the facts remain what they are. Virtually every other nation in the First World has demonstrated that some form of universal health care, especially when mixed with private health insurance, serves the populace better as a whole, and simultaneously saves money. The American system is both more expensive and less effective. This state of affairs cannot last forever; people can be convinced to vote against their best interests for only so long. A national pharmacy and some form of universal health care will be the only way to make any sort of meaningful impact on the cost of health care. And it will happen - the only question is how many lives and careers it costs along the way.

Think how many jobs could be created alone if employers didn’t have to pay for health insurance. Think how much money could be saved by removing the entirely wasted extraneous costs of health care. Universal health care is the fiscally responsible choice.

It would also free a helluva lot of people trapped in plans they can’t afford to spend some of that money on tangible goods and services.

The health outcomes of the American system which spends a third more as a whole than the conglomeration of western democracies of aggregated populations are actually worse. Administration costs - particularly at the private insurers are massively inflated taking money away from patient care which doesn’t happen in the not for profit/social insurance or flat out Govt Run plans world wide.

The reality is so apparent that the real question is no longer how to improve the US health care system, but this: what problems exist in the US political system that prevent its government from taking actions that save money and benefit the people and the nation? There is no one out there who could possibly replace Wenger - when he took over we were 7th and going no where, first full season we won the double.

Arsenal are the lowest spenders in the top 5 of the league, but per million spent we have more league points and better finishes.

Arsenal don’t have the resources to compete with the Man Utd debt mountain or the Billionaire who runs chelsea - so we don’t try to compete on their spending. Our youth development system is much better than both of theirs too.

The NHS actually did a study a few years ago into precisely this issue.

I think in the end they decided that the money question was too complicated to figure out if you included everything (lifetime productivity, the cost of depression in your close relatives and so forth).

Overall they still seem to think that we’re better off trying to persuade people not to smoke.

Well, I’m too lazy to look into it right now. I think the point was: yes, smokers might cost less by dying young, but there are all these other costs associated with dying young, over and above the costs of smoking, so it’s still a bad idea.

When he came into the game young english players were either - fragile, primadonnas or cloggers.
Stepphen Hughes & Francis Jeffers are both examples of people he persisted with and couldn’t make fit into his system.

It’s getting better though - our youth team has always been there or there abouts and when the young english lads have been put in (Justin Hoyte (now departed), Kieran Gibbs, Henri Lansbury and many others over the last five years they have acquited themselves admirably.

Seriously. I mean, Kristol is a stopped clock when it comes to Beck and his delusions, but he’s still a hack when it comes to damn near everything else. Pointing out that Beck’s crazy doesn’t suddenly redeem him.

But he is pointing out that reasonable people can disagree on the way forward in Egypt, and that the conservative tradition is to support democracy. His article is a call for conservatives to live up to their ideals and show the GOP as being Ronald Reagan and Abraham Lincoln’s party. It’s a vital call to stand on principle. Beck can’t be allowed to win this one, and honestly, this is a hill the Weekly Standard and Nation Review should be willing to die on. If they lose, then its time for them to truly do a rethink. Whose idea of what it means to be conservative is what’s at stake:

Is it to be that of Barry Goldwater, Ronald Reagan and William F. Buckley, or that of Glenn Beck and Pam Geller?

Coptic Christians shoulder to shoulder with Muslims in Tahrir Square

At Sunday Mass in Tahrir Square, thousands of Christians swayed to the sound of hymns blasted from a pair of tired speakers, not far from a makeshift trauma unit used to tend to the injured and count the dead on earlier, more violent days.

Above the faithful, an effigy of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak swung ever so gently in the breeze, dangling from a red noose that has already begun to fray.

Try again. He said since. Then he gave him a condescending look.

Sure enough…I re-re-listened and you are correct :) I still think Bill was referring not to Obama’s preparation for the job, but to the “surprising aspect”. Bill can be an idiot, no doubt (“the tides come and go, but what causes that, nobody knows”). But O’Reilly flatly stating Obama was not prepared to become president doesn’t seem to fit with the tenor of the interview. I don’t think Obama took it that way, or he would have challeneged the premise of the question.

I think that’s exactly what Bill intended it to sound like. That was the whole knock on him when he was running. I believe the look he gives him after the question conveys his purpose.

Me too. The difference between Bill Kristol and Charles Krauthammer on Egypt is one of tactics. The difference between them and Glenn Beck is one of first principles. Kristol’s column honestly did change my mind on the situation: If conservatives are going to hold true to their principles, we have to support movement towards democracy. Liberals do, too. Yes, there is risk, but I now realize that in this case hypocrisy would actually be its own risk and a serious form of failure.

re: #183 iossarian

He always put in 100% every game. I was never disappointed in him. He could have scored a few more goals - but in a team with Wright, Kanu, Bergkamp, Overmans, Lgungberg, Pires, Henry (etc etc) the pressure was never on him to contribute goals. He was a solid midfield clogger who did everything without fuss - just got on with it and arsenal now have Alex Song to do a similar job.
We badly miss his physical strength on the wing though. Very badly.

Most frustrating - without question - John Jensen - one goal in his entire arsenal career and i was there to see it in the north bank against QPR.

i wonder why the mainstream media; CBS Sixty Minutes or one of the news magazine shows, hasn’t done some kind of expose on Fox News and this Fox Nation hate site. A news organization in America is running a site that is probably one of the most partisan websites on the internet, with its sole purpose to attack and delegitimize a President of the United States. And there’s not a peep in the media about it.

The 4th estate is also there to keep the 4th estate in line, not just government.

re: #19 Killgore Trout

Their op ed section went off the rails after the election. They started running wild conspiracy theories, bogus information, hysterical doom and gloom predictions. Part of that is Murdoch broke his promise to tamper with the content of the paper and the other factor was a black man in the white house. They really went nuts.

And the quality of the editing really tanked. It used to be that the NYT and the WSJ could be counted on for correct grammar and punctuation, and while it has also gone downhill at the NYT, it became sadly and obviously noticeable at the WSJ, to the point that even front page stories had typos, incorrect grammar and incorrect punctuation. The NYT has not yet approached that (lack of) standard.

I know that sounds like a crazy, small thing but it was such a glaring, and sudden, change that it seemed clear there was more behind it. This is about the time that the headlines for the articles began to have a very sensationalistic spin. Also, not coincidentally, about the time my spouse and I cancelled our 15 year subscription.
