Ron Paul Calls Neo-Confederate Loon As Witness at First Hearing on Fed

Slavery apologist testifies on unemployment
Wingnuts • Views: 32,882

The Republican Party put anti-Federal Reserve wingnut libertarian Ron Paul in charge of overseeing the Federal Reserve, and today, for his first hearing as chairman, he called one of his friends as a witness — neo-Confederate slavery apologist Thomas J. DiLorenzo.

Texas Republican Rep. Ron Paul, one of the most outspoken opponents of the Federal Reserve, is hosting his first subcommittee hearing Wednesday as chairman of a House subcommittee overseeing the central bank.

The new chairman of the House Domestic Monetary Policy and Technology Subcommittee has called the hearing to examine the impact of the Fed’s policies on job creation and the unemployment rate.

The roster of witnesses called to testify includes Thomas J. DiLorenzo, professor of economics at Loyola University’s Sellinger School of Business …

At one point, when Paul opened up the hearing to questions from committee members, Rep. Lacy Clay (D-Mo.) directly took on DiLorenzo for his membership in the League of the South, an organization that has been designated by the Southern Poverty Law Center as a “neo-Confederate” hate group advocating for Southern secession.

Clay then rattled off a list of some of DiLorenzo’s articles, including “More Lies about the Civil War,” “In Defense of Sedition,” and “The First Dictator-President,” which examines “how Lincoln’s myth has corrupted America.”

“After reviewing your work and the so-called methods you employ, I still cannot understand you being invited to testify today on the unemployment crisis, but I do know that I have no questions for you,” Clay concluded.

DiLorenzo’s historical revisionism was also featured at last year’s CPAC, sponsored by Ron (and Rand) Paul’s Campaign for Liberty.

This is what the Tea Party has brought to American politics.

(Correction: it’s Ron Paul’s subcommittee, not Rand Paul’s. For some reason I have trouble telling them apart.)

DiLorenzo is another one of these Austrian Economics kooks. It’s just mind-boggling to see people like this influencing the future of the Federal Reserve.

This is going to end very badly.

I actually kinda met Clay back when I was a congressional intern. I was waiting for the other guys in my carpool and he was taking a smoke break. Seemed like a nice guy. In fact if I recall right, I was actually going to be originally assigned to his office but there was some mix up and I got reassigned.

To be fair, the School of Business at Loyola (or “Sellinger” as it is generally referred to in MBA internship circles) is extremely highly regarded, particularly for its strength in macroeconomic policy research.

Wael Ghonim: Negotiation days with Mubarak are over

Wael Ghonim, the Egyptian activist being hailed by many fellow protesters as a hero, had a message Wednesday for his country’s leaders: “If you are true Egyptians, if you are heroic Egyptians, it’s time to step down.”

In an exclusive interview with CNN, Ghonim, who was freed by Egyptian authorities on Monday after 10 days, said it is “no longer the time to negotiate” with the regime of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak.

“There’s a lot of blood now” that has been spilled, he said. It’s time for people at the highest levels of the government “to apologize to the families” of those killed, he said.

The bolded portion is both the premise and the conclusion. Austrian economics isn’t a field of study. It’s a set of axioms and a priori assumptions. It only makes sense if you force yourself not to consider that the purpose of an economic system is to create and distribute goods and services for the betterment of the majority of humanity.

Oh, Gee, again—Koch family money involvement:

(Wiki)
The Ludwig von Mises Institute was established in 1982 under the direction of Margit von Mises, widow of Ludwig von Mises, who chaired its board until her death in 1993. Llewellyn H. Rockwell, Jr is the founder, a former president and currently the chairman (since 2009); Douglas French is the current president. The late economist Murray Rothbard was a major influence on the Institute’s activities and served as its academic vice president until his death in 1995. Among others, Friedrich von Hayek, Lawrence Fertig, and Henry Hazlitt also assisted in both its construction and continued scholarly development.[10]

Some controversy surrounds its creation and the Koch Family Foundations throughout the 1980s.[11] The ensuing ideology-driven drama created a rift between the Mises Institute and organizations like the Cato Institute, whose members had been staunch allies throughout the 1970s and early 1980s.[12]

Taking a break.

Egyptian protesters march on parliament

In Cairo, protesters marched on parliament in defiance of a televised plea from vice-president Omar Suleiman, who warned that they risked provoking a situation in which a coup d’etat was possible.

His statement was dismissed by many of the protesters and denounced as a threat by one of the most powerful of opposition groups, the Muslim Brotherhood.

“This amounts to a threat that is unacceptable in the eyes of the Egyptian people,” Mohammed Mursi, a spokesman for the Islamist group, said.

“The protesters have imposed a new legitimacy, and this legitimacy should be respected, for it cannot be threatened.”

An army general who ordered the protesters outside parliament to disperse and go back to Tahrir Square was met by chants of “we are not leaving, he is leaving”.

The frustrated general eventually asked his troops to block off the main road from the south into central Cairo which runs by the parliament.

The demonstrators have set up tents and barricades and say they will not leave until Mr Mubarak leaves office.

hehehehe. Applying a term like that to economics systems is actually quite hilarious.

It’s sort of the go-to meme for republicans when dealing with anything that has been rigorously studied, and about which academia has come to a consensus which isn’t consistent with republican goals.

Just make up some bullshit, then, when the academic establishment calls you ca crackpot, create a “think tank”, hire “scholars”, and churn out gobbledygook that means nothing, but convinces stupid people there is a controversy. This approach didn’t start with evolution in American politics, it started with economics.

It has been incredibly successful. Huge numbers of Americans believe things about economics that are provably false, including most democrats.

I call it the lazy student argument. When I was in my second year of my mechanical engineering degree, I had an assignment where I needed to write a model of the behavior of someone swinging on a swing (for those of you that care, it’s basically a fancy double pendulum with a forcing function) and present it to the class. Sometime around 3am the night before presentation I came around to the idea that since swinging was easy and the math describing it was hard, the math had to be wrong. Because I was sure my math was the best way of modeling it, that meant that the entire mathematical system had to be wrong and that I should simply write a new one not based on rational numbers. That thought was good for a laugh and a trip to the vending machines before I junked my code and started over.

A couple of month later I opened the New York Times and realized that some people don’t stop at the vending machines, they walk out of the building convinced that their education is done and they need to enlighten the world about how things really work. And that’s how I lost my faith in humanity.

These are a fascinating and sometimes scary bunch of people. I went to a Tea Parry meeting awhile back and they had a local sheriff there talking about gun laws and self defense issues.

At one point someone asked him whether or not it was legal to put IEDs or other booby traps on your property to keep out trespassers in situation where police were not available. The sheriff admitted he wasn’t sure.

Can you imagine someone doing that and accidentally taking out a mailman or one of his neighbors kids or something?

Needless to say I would not want to live anywhere near that guy.

One of the ways secessionists (who are usually a nice melting pot of neo-confederate babyklukker pro militia fundies) try to dodge contractual obligations like mortgages and auto loans is bringing the gold standard language into their pleadings. They don’t recognize promissory notes, they claim to be slaves, they challenge the validity of the dollar, they’ll trade liened property between themselves for “one piece of silver” and all kinds of crazy shit.

There are entire forums (usually private) dedicated to discussing how their crazyspeak pleadings delay foreclosures and repossessions, complete with faux attorneys (often disbarred real attorneys or “activists”) that offer to draw up their documents for a fee.

These people love Ron Paul. And these are the people Mr. Heat faces on a regular basis. Yes, they are scary. They’re batshit fucking nuts and they have a rage boner for anyone who injects reality into their lives.
