Tech Note: The Return of the Long-Forgotten LGF Search Requests Page

How people get here
LGF • Views: 31,196

Long ago, in an LGF application that relied on a custom-made flat file database now lost in the mists of antiquity, we had a feature that showed the actual search queries that brought visitors to our humble abode.

This feature was dropped when we switched over to a grown-up MySQL database, but tonight, after years in limbo, it’s been rebooted with a Javascript/Ajax makeover, as part of our long-standing LGF Referrers page. There are now two tabs in the masthead, right next to the logo, that let you switch between the “website referral” view and the “search engine request” view.

And it’s still interesting to see the things people type into search engines.

OK, there are some VERY funny searches in there!

4 jamesfirecat  Wed, Feb 9, 2011 6:04:05pm

"nazi youth pictures"

That sounds like the kind of search that can land you on all kinds of government lists....

It certainly is. I see my "Paris Hilton" page is closing in on 17,000 views.

My most throw-away Page ever... and it's the top view getter.

Okay. It must be something I cannot see because I am still using Internet Explorer 8. Or maybe because I do not have a subscription.

I just opened a jar of pears that Mom canned last summer. I think they are the most delicious thing I've tasted in a while. It's a middle of winter thing. Like summer in a jar. I don't can fruit myself, it's a lot of work but savoring these right now I'm convinced it's worth it. I'm sooo canning more this summer when things come in fresh. If I get bummed while doing it I'll just imagine the pure joy I'm gonna have eating them in the dark cold of February.

Bing just sucks--using metadata from internet explorer user's click habits on google to plug their search engine with google's results. Google is where real innovation happens. The only thing M$ ever innovated was how to out maneuver the competition with agreements that prevented vendors from doing business with other OS companies than Microsoft. Anything "innovative" was bought or copied/imitated from competitors.

Also think about pickles. It's tough to bring yourself to pickle green beans in the height of summer when you're already tired of eating them but it's worth the effort because they're fucking delicious in January.

He always uses the paddle on trolls, to tenderize their Gamey Buttocks. He does not eat the resulting Troll Roast, though: trolls eat their own kind, so they are not kosher.

I can see that on normal trolls, but stalker trolls are special, they need tenderizing with the self powered giant anal stir stick.

Stalker trolls require a larger paddle made of stone. If the troll cannot be tenderized with a stone paddle, then it is too nasty to eat and should be disposed of via the Flounceapult.

It's just a normal catapult, with a special seat for the troll. The troll is held in place by clamps that open when the lever is pulled, thus allowing the troll to be flung into the Fever Swamp.

What's funny to me about the whole equation of Islam and Socialism is that Muslim Americans as a whole are quite politically conservative. Yes, they vote for Democrats now but you can thank right wing assholes who act like every Muslim is a jihadist for that.

Almost as dumb as Mark Foley. Ironic that the party of family values seems to have at least as much value-less activity as the party of Satan and baby killers.///////

But you'd think Drudge would at least mention it, even if buried down the page. Lots of Drudgies live in a right wing bubble--if they don't hear it on Drudge, Fox or Limbaugh, it never happened. Would love to see a snap poll of awareness of Lee's departure broken down by media choice.

I don't like adultery at all obviously but you would think that just maybe with all the adultery scandals that have happened to Republican politicians in recent years that maybe they'd stop acting like they are more moral. Seriously, if they just acted like they were the same as anyone else, I highly doubt that Lee would be getting ridiculed the way he is. Oh and you can't say gay marriage ruins the sanctity of marriage when divorce rates are at their highest in history and to boot at their highest in one of your key geographic base areas too. My knee is killing me.

Anyway, since we're on the topic of "them" and I noticed that ChenZhen has once again obsessed about me and since I know they read every single word we type here's a couple of points Chen.

Yo Chen,

A. The fact that I registered Gus_802 at Twitter is in fact a coincidence and happened on the same day that I deleted my old account, Indie_Thinker. I had already been on Twitter but you just didn't notice.

B. I only Tweet for myself, and no one else. I don't do it exclusively for Charles (i.e. Little Green Footballs) and since you seem to follow my every move you may have noticed that I also link to other newsworthy stories.

C. No, Charles doesn't follow me on Twitter but Nancy Sinatra does. Works for me. I'm not doing it for anyone's attention. My primary goal is to Tweet newsworthy stories regarding the latest wingnut foolishness with a frequent Tweet on atheist topics.

D. Apparently there was a coding error involving MSIE that created the faulty counts. At the time I only tested it on Firefox so I mistakenly didn't consider cross platform errors.

E. I blocked you because I didn't want to see every single DoD Tweet come across my Twitter feed.

Overall I'm getting too old to worry about all of this foolishness. The reality is that you don't know me and I don't know you. I've been staying out of all of this childish blog war bologna but happened to see this latest post, about me, that was Twittered by 1389.

Now I suppose if this makes you happy go for it. And you have to admit that's a cool avatar which I made from a photograph I took at an airshow. And no, I'm not jilted at all. My knee fucking hurts like crazy to worry about this errata.

Labor Actions in Egypt Boost Protests

CAIRO — Labor strikes and worker protests that flared across Egypt on Wednesday affected post offices, textile factories and even the government’s flagship newspaper, providing a burst of momentum to protesters demanding the resignation of President Hosni Mubarak, even as his government pushed back with greater force against the opponents’ demands.

The protests at the newspaper, Al Ahram, by freelance reporters demanding better wages and more independence from the government, snarled one of the state’s most powerful propaganda tools and seemed to change its tone: On Wednesday, the front page, which had sought for days to play down the protests, called recent attacks by pro-Mubarak protesters on Tahrir Square an “offense to the whole nation.”

I'm with Ms Ali, who has lived under the MB influence in Kenya vs Mr Bergen who has not. She is one outstanding lady and in her own quiet way, she showed herself to be much better informed on this topic than the smug Mr Bergen. Good for her!

On Wednesday Joe "BP Apologist" Barton yet again decided to attack climate science, this time quoting a section of a "report" that was cherry picked. Here is his video (from his own Youtube channel, btw), showing his opening statement from the hearings Wednesday:

205 freetoken  Thu, Feb 10, 2011 12:16:41am

Here's a longer version of Barton's little grandstanding:

There person who was at EPA of whom Barton keeps referring, a Mr. Carlin, wrote a report (we brought it up here before, as some now long gone lizards tried to trumpet it) that was essentially a repackaging of a bunch of denier memes, referencing WUWT, referencing the Lord High Denier himself, and other less than marginal sources.

And here is Joe Barton (Chief BP champion in Congress) putting these absurd and just plain wrong assertions by Carlin into the record of this House hearing.

Joe Barton loves Lord Monckton and his followers (Tony Watts, etc.), and once again disgraces himself.

206 freetoken  Thu, Feb 10, 2011 1:07:34am

BTW, that House Energy and Commerce committee hearing had lots of little side stories attached to it - such as Henry Waxman publicizing a letter that showed that the Bush's administration's own EPA head was recommending (while in office, and to President Bush) that the EPA ought to regulate CO2.

But the funniest story is this - James Inhofe is planning to release a book about climate change!

Inhofe had crossed chambers to testify in favor of the new legislation, which he co-authored with Energy and Commerce chair Fred Upton and subcommittee chair Ed Whitfield, and which would block the Environmental Protection Agency from regulating greenhouse gas emissions under the Clean Air Act. And in response to a question from Upton, Inhofe took the opportunity to mention his book, telling the committee that he just finished it and that it will be entitled "The Hoax.”

I don't know if Inhofe is serious or not... but if he is, likely the book was ghost written in part and supplied to him by his sponsors.

See also:

Oklahoma U.S. Sen. Jim Inhofe promotes global warming skepticism and his book at House hearing

[...] Inhofe — who doesn't have a publisher or a target release date for his book — was the leading witness at the Energy and Power subcommittee hearing, which, at least for the first couple of hours, was little more than a forum for Republicans and Democrats to air well-established positions on the EPA's role and the larger issue of global warming.

Inhofe told Waxman that he still believes human-induced global warming is a hoax. And he told the subcommittee that, even if it weren't, regulations to reduce greenhouse gas emissions would have almost no effect on global temperatures but cost the U.S. economy between $300 billion and $400 billion a year.

Jul 8, 2009 - the now long gone HelloDare again trumpeted it: [Link: littlegreenfootballs.com...]
Note in the comments the inability of some to simply look up evidence.

Oct 19, 2009 - the now long gone EE trumpeted it: [Link: littlegreenfootballs.com...]

Aug 8, 2009 - Charles posts Sinclair's takedown of Carlin: [Link: littlegreenfootballs.com...]
Note that Inhofe's suckers still take to Carlin's idiocy.

I work within sight of the Gehry tower, and it is a sight to behold. Best views are actually from Brooklyn just before and after sunrise (golden hour) and then silhouetted at sunset.

It's somewhat less inspiring when seen from street level in front of the building as you can't really grasp the full beauty and scope from that vantage.

Yet, the Times writer couldn't help but get a couple of shots in at the Freedom Tower (1WTC), which is now more than half its ultimate height (and will soon surpass Gehry's tower in height).

All true, but I'm sorry--that was about Christopher Lee, the Craigslist Congressman (not the horror film actor).

Oops. My error. Got crossed up with the Forrest stuff and thought there was a reference to something Robert E Lee wrote. (For instance having his troops surrender rather than attempting a last ditch guerilla war that would have devastated the South even further.)

This Lee showing some integrity by resigning still applies. And that is still different from honor in any case. ;)

I'm waiting for the mechanical/software upgrade to be made to the Comcast Tower in Philadelphia so that it can warp it's outside reflective surface to actually *focus* the reflected sunlight into a point defense system. (Think magnifying glass vs ants, or for those with a SF-thing Niven's "sunflowers" on the Ring World.) Right now I can be walking on the street 2-3 blocks from the building and feel the reflected light coming off the building - not to mention noticing that I'm casting two shadows as well.

Back when they tried the Atlantic City gambling revival, one of the new buildings along the boardwalk was faced with simple planar mirror glass set at an angle of 90 degrees or so. That was enough to leave a series of scorch marks on the dry wood of the boardwalk.

Tweak that design a bit for a little more focus from multiple panes and you suddenly have an interesting way to carry out a hit. "Oh looky there. The sun came out and poor Rocco got a little burned. This sun is a killer, you need a little higher SPF sunscreen, dontyathink?"

How will Rep. Chris Lee's departure affect NYS politics? Well, there's going to be a special election that has to be called by Gov. There's issues with mirrored glass at one of the hotels in Vegas.

Gordon Absher, a spokesman for MGM Resorts, which owns the Vdara hotel, said they was aware of the issue and designers were working with resort staff to come up with a solution.

In fact it is claimed that the designers foresaw the issue with the reflecting sun but thought they had solved it by installing a high-tech film on the south-facing panes of glass.

However, Mr Absher, conceded it had not been enough and some of the guests had suffered as a result.

The Las Vegas Review Journal quotes one hotel employee as saying the building's design causes the sunshine to be diverted 'like a magnifying glass that shines down' over a space of about 10 by 15 feet as the poolside.

And as the Earth rotates, the spot moves across the pool area. The 'death ray' can increase temperatures by around 20 degrees.

Nuts. No luck finding an image of Crow after he got shot by Tom Servo's death ray on MST3K. (The Danger! Death Ray episode). Probably out there as a YouTube clip, but I can't view that from work. I laughed out loud when Crow's ping-pong ball eyes suddenly flared up.

Given we've found at least three examples anyone want to bet there is at least one conspiracy theory out there that architects are purposefully building 'death ray' capacity into buildings and that there is some sinister plan in the works to suddenly modify and harness these buildings as actual weapons?

"Hopes" that he transfers power is a whole lot different than actually jetting off to a life in exile in Jedda or London or wherever former autocrat/kleptocrats go to spend their days (and ill-gotten gains).

This is far from the first time there were rumors or claims that he was going to depart from Egypt's power scene.

The headlines are hyping that he may stand down.

A senior member of Egypt's governing party has told the BBC he "hopes" that President Hosni Mubarak will transfer power to Vice-President Omar Suleiman.

Hossan Badrawi, secretary general of the National Democratic Party (NDP), said Mr Mubarak would "most probably" speak to the nation soon.

It comes on the 17th day of protests against Mr Mubarak's 30-year rule.

The Egyptian military has said it is ready to respond to the "legitimate demands of the people".

In a statement on Egyptian state TV, it said the safety and security of the people was paramount.

The last time Mubarak got before the camera, there were reports he was going to announce his resignation. That didn't happen then either.

In the 60s the French built a vast parabolic mirror array to focus sunlight across a valley, a mile or two away. The purpose was to generate a couple thousand degrees in a target structure, providing a chemical-free heat for high-temp research. Some where near Grenoble, IIRC. Will check.

It's actually quite a good way of doing solar power. There are test installations in Spain IIRC that use this method: they have "trenches" of mirrors that focus sunlight onto tubes carrying some kind of oil (the tubes are suspended above the trenches). Then the oil is fed into a steam turbine.

I think there might be a test installation somewhere in the south west as well.

Looks like there are a few relatively small-scale commercial solar plants operating in the southwest US.

[Link: en.wikipedia.org...]

Link is to the one in Nevada that is using the mirrors to heat fluid-carrying tubes. There is mention of another unit near Tucson, AZ that appears to use a central collecting tower design (which probably is the one I was thinking of earlier.)

A plant design like this; solar -> fluid -> turbine -> electricity would probably be a wonderful example for teaching energy transfer and a bit of fluid mechanics all in one fell swoop.

(Attn: LVQ, if you need a subject for a page teaching some science basics. Especially if you can use that to link the basic concepts to large-scale applications, something like planet-scale energy transfer which occurs due to the uneven heating our little ball gets from the sun...)

The article is about Jim Webb's senate seat, and who will run for it when Webb retires. That website is rapidly becoming a deep well of stupidity and hypocrisy.

Perhaps someone could recommend a homeopathic remedy for knee-jerk hyperbole? /

I doubt it. I expect this has been in the works for a while with Mubarak finally realizing or being told that there's just no way he could stay without it all falling to crap. There have been signs of different power brokers(military included) working behind the scenes. I expect the 'real' story of all the back room wheelings and dealings will be very interesting if it ever comes out. Likely not to know much about it for years and years though.

There have been some phenomenal buildings to have gone up in NYC in the past couple of years - the IAC HQ on the West Side (another Gehry project), a couple of Brooklyn towers along Flatbush Avenue in Fort Greene, and Norman Foster's Hearst Building expansion to name but a few.

My view of the building is from the SE, and it looks pretty cool. Funny thing, though: they've left the construction elevator (that's hung on the side) up for way longer than I would have figured. I wonder what that's about.

I also look forward to when I can see WTC 1 again. One of these days it will start to poke above the stuff in between me and it, and that will be progress.

From there:

During the last 13 months, the Republicans that have led the way with the largest number of Barely True, False, and Pants On Fire grades are Sarah Palin with eight, Michele Bachmann with seven, and John Boehner, Mike Pence, and the National Republican Congressional Committee with four each.

Whereas Boehner received six "True," two "Mostly True," and one "Half True" ratings during this span, Pence and the NRCC received none in these categories, Bachmann only two, and Palin just four.

They're really asking the Magical Balance Fairy to do some heavy lifting there. I hope she's he's up to it.

I'm not an expert by any means but learning about Egyptian politics and their system has been an eye opener. I keep coming back to some of the stuff I've read that suggests that Egypt basically has been a military dictatorship anyways. The military through Mubarak (military man) and his regime has always had the military and it's cronies in positions of power and authority. So this transfering of power isn't necessarily a transfer from civilian to military but more like an internal transfer of military to military.

To this day I do not think a lot of people understand how close we were to a total and complete financial meltdown.

The yahoos in the "let them fail" camp never understood how bad it could have been. I'm no fan of the taxpayer helping out Citi, GS, and the rest, but we were really doing it for us, not them.

It was a very close call.

re: #392 reine.de.tout

hehe.

It's much colder than usual here this morning. Temp is right at 30.

One of my cats wanted outside so I let her outside.

I just heard the most frantic scratching at the window - it was the cat, who was absolutely so desperate to get back inside that she went to the front window because it was closest to where she was, rather than going around to the back door where she usually comes in to avoid another cat who terrorizes her. LOL.

These animals are so funny.

One of my favorite things to do is sit on the patio (weather permitting) and read. When Kingston (my cat) was alive I'd watch him each time I lifted my eyes from the page. Such entertainment. He was so creative with supposed games going all the time. Most fun was when the two resident blue jays visited and they'd harass each other with Kingston going into deep hunting mode. A riot.
