I live in earthquake country so a fixed land-line and an old style phone that works off the phone line power are important communication devices when one strikes.

I've got an old rotary-dial phone that lives under the hall table. Ideal for when the power goes out.

I never rated high enough to get polled. I'd just get the robocalls from [insert famous politician here] telling me to vote for [local/state candidate] because they supported [issue] and they cared about my future and my community.

Between them and the people trying to get me to contribute to whatever charity scam they were running or buy some product, I pretty much had no reason to have a landline anymore. Yeah, the cell is more expensive, but at least I can justify the expense given everything I use my iPhone for.

Egyptian strikes:

Workers were striking in Suez, Mahalla, and other industrial cities. Postal workers were protesting, and government telecom employees were demanding that the president step down. Professional unions and syndicates had begun to align themselves with the revolution, and medical students and doctors staged a march in their white coats, from a public hospital, down to Tahrir. Someone tweeted “I counted 16 different strikes in two days, 4 in factories owned by army, more to come,” and another, “Almost all public transportation garages in Cairo are on strike now #Jan25 #Egypt #revolution”.

Some legal issues for a transition of power in Egypt:

Mubarak's inability to speak clearly reflects the degradation of democracy in Egypt during his decades in power. So much legal, indeed constitutional, change is personally dependent on the President, from dissolving parliament and the government to amending the national charter itself. The succession issue is fraught because of it. For years, Mubarak had no Vice President to delegate any of his powers to and was, in fact, only forced to pick one after the demonstrations started on Jan. 25. And, in one constitutional scenario, a presidential election would have been required within 60 days of him leaving office — a precipitous situation no one in Egypt today wants. As for the parliament, which has an important role in any succession, it cannot meet because it does not have a quorum. The results of the last legislative elections, at the end of 2010, were so widely considered fraudulent that more than 184 seats out of 508 are being contested in lawsuits. Thus, an orderly transition required Mubarak to speak precisely. If that was what he was trying to do on Thursday night, he failed miserably.

Britain Faces Closing The Book On Libraries

"Among the toughest decisions the local politicians face is whether to shut down their public libraries. About 400 or so have been targeted for closure already ... sparking an outcry from communities across the country.

There was a time in Britain, say 160 years ago, when some in Parliament didn't believe in public libraries at all. The worry was, if the working class read books, it would get dangerous ideas and rise up against the government.

That's not the debate today. But this is still sensitive ground for politicians.

Prime Minister David Cameron stressed that his government is happy to invest in libraries, if they evolve."

Obama Gives Black Leaders Bad News On Likely Budget Cuts

Obama soon will submit to Congress a proposed budget that would slice $300 million from community development block grants, the biggest funding source enabling local governments to deliver everything from economic development to road repairs to law enforcement resources — particularly in communities with heavy concentrations of poor and minority residents.

The administration also wants to slash half the $350 million in annual spending on community service block grants, which aid the poorest children and families. (The change also would convert the program into a competitive grant process.)

Not a rosy outlook for members of the National Policy Alliance who attended the White House meetings as representatives for several associations of black mayors, state lawmakers and local officials. It compounds the economic downturn's harsh impact on blacks, whose unemployment rate is at 15.7 percent, compared with the national rate of 9 percent

Speaking In Defense Of Science

"A country that distrusts science is condemned to move straight back to medieval obscurantism.

While many countries are working hard to educate their young about the values of science and of scientific research, in the U.S. countless people are teaching them to mistrust science and scientists, taking every opportunity to politicize and theologize the scientific discourse in ways completely incompatible with the goals and modus operandi of the scientific enterprise.

Now, many will say that they are not anti-science per se, just against the science that clashes with their religious beliefs. So, antibiotics are fine, but the theory of evolution is not. If only they'd take the time to learn about how antibiotics work and about how over-prescribing can result in germ mutations that render some antibiotics ineffective. It's is a real-time illustration of the theory of evolution at work.

Or take the statement made by Bill O'Reilly, that my co-blogger Adam Frank posted here yesterday, concerning the tides and the existence of the moon. Can a man living in the 21st century, and with enormous media clout, actually state that God put the moon around the Earth to promote the tides? Apparently, yes."

Hehe... Pat Buchanan is angry.

It seems he took GWB's little foray into American history personally.

Bush said:

Speaking at a forum at Southern Methodist University last month, Bush said that he had faith a "rational immigration policy" would eventually be passed, but not for a while. The reason he believed this, he said, was because the nation as growing increasingly resistant to outside influences.

"What's interesting about our country, if you study history, is that there are some 'isms' that occasionally pop up. One is isolationism and its evil twin protectionism and its evil triplet nativism. So if you study the '20s, for example, there was an American-first policy that said, 'Who cares what happens in Europe?'" Bush said. "And there was an immigration policy that I think during this period argued we had too many Jews and too many Italians, therefore we should have no immigrants. And my point is that we've been through this kind of period of isolationism, protectionism and nativism. I'm a little concerned that we may be going through the same period. I hope that these 'isms' pass." [...]

That really ruffled Buchanan's feathers. From Buchanan's latest article:

George W. Bush must have been the despair of the history department of every school his daddy managed to get him into.

Consider his latest excursion into the history of the republic, at Southern Methodist, where the Great Man's papers are to be housed.

Buchanan then goes on to try and make some points, but in a very devious way. He actually reads into Bush's statement small changes on what Bush actually said.

BTW, I came across this taking a quick look at the latest Townhall postings. What a mess, they've gone from bad to worse. A zoo of xenophobia pretending to be something else.

Fox News has certainly been achieving its goals:

Fox News Poll: Most Americans See Events in Egypt as Worrisome Rather Than Inspiring

After more than two weeks of mass protests in Egypt, 67 percent of American voters describe events in that country as “worrisome.” That’s more than three times as many as see the events as “inspiring” (19 percent).

The unrest began on January 25 and continued through today. Protesters vowed to continue until Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak resigned. Thursday evening Mubarak announced he will stay in office until September.
Republicans (81 percent) and those who consider themselves part of the Tea Party movement (82 percent) are among the most likely to describe the events as “worrisome.”

Democrats (26 percent) and independents (23 percent) are more than twice as likely as Republicans (9 percent) to see the events in Egypt as “inspiring.”

I got back from Paris three weeks ago with a nasty bronchial infection, then Krogers called be back to work from my lay off, had to go on antibiotics, then my 8 year old HP computer's mother board finally died, had to buy a new Dell and get all my data transfered and synced up... it's just been over the last few days that I've had my old energy back.

Paris trip was great, except for getting sick one day before returning. Spent the last day in the hotel room in Menilmontant while the girlfriend decided to hit the streets and finish up sightseeing herself. I though that was really neat, since she had never been to Paris before, and I was feeling bad about possibly ruining her last day in town, but she headed out and spent about 12 hours on her own... good for her.

The military may well be king-making at their higher levels. But I think to a large degree that it might be a good thing that they're not explicitly doing so at the lower levels. It's not something you want your army to develop a habit towards doing.

I'm sure most of the power is at the highest levels. The army boots on the ground are mostly young conscripts. Conscripted service people can often feel conflicted and aren't as malleable as volunteer boots.

I know what you mean. She got an intensive 9 days of learning the metro systems and the layout of the city from me, but still, I have to admit, I was both excited and at the same time concerned about her running around a strange European city on her own. I'd be worried about anyone running around any strange city on their own.

But it worked out fine. Actually so fine I was jealous because she hit up some places that I had never seen, places like the museum of technology, where the large Foucoult's pendulum is (also the stepping off point of Eco's satirical conspiracy novel "Foucoult's pendulum.")

And she found a really neat open market that sold all sorts of birds for pets. I didn't even know that market existed.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. All eyes are on Egypt and no one apparently knows where Mubarak is or who exactly is in charge. The rumor mill is churning furiously.

U.S. officials tell NBC News that they believe vice president is now running Egypt. There are reports Mubarak has left Cairo for a Sinai resort (Sharm el Sheikh?) Presidency to make 'important' statement soon, Egypt TV says.

Is it possible that the Army got hoodwinked by Mubarak's defiant tone in last night's speech, and they've had enough - especially with the crowds growing even louder and more boisterous since Mubarak decided to essentially replay his speech from last week that was just as tone deaf?

Huntsman would be smarter if he didn't run in 2012 at all, and instead let all these nutjobs and all this Bad Crazy play itself out. Besides, he willingly took an appointment from Obama, and he's considered a moderate. He couldn't win the primaries right now anyway. Better to let the GOP keep going full steam ahead into crazytown, let them lose in 2012, and then run in 2016.

As for Romney, these people hate him anyway for Romneycare and they don't trust him because all he's ever done is look for the opportune time to say anything. He wouldn't win either.

Good morning everyone from sunny (really!) Philadelphia. Third day in a row of clear sunny skies in the morning with sub-freezing tempetures. A bracing wind as well from the west-southwest to help one walk faster.

Today's cooking special is slow cooker pulled pork BBQ*. 4lbs of pork shoulder given a spicy dry rub two days ago, and now in the crockpot with some onions and a little water. Final prep this evening using some spicy sauce, more onions, and just a bit more cooking.

* - Yes, you need a grill for *real* BBQ. But given that it's winter, I don't have a grill, and further requirements I've settled for a slow cooker variation.

Not good- and not unexpected.

The police and military are a privileged lot. They know very well who butters their bread.

I'm pleasantly surprised that more stuff like this hasn't happened. I think it speaks well for the demonstrators involved.

In terms of the military, I think that there is a possibility of a split occurring between the ranks. The generals and higher ups are that really enjoy the priviledges of the regime, power and wealth. They have to most to lose with a change in power structure. The lower ranks not so much. There's already been unconfirmed reports of soldiers joining the protest. Would the people actually doing the shooting do so if the order came through from the seat sitters?

The situation in Sinai is quite a bit more complicated. There are Bedouin tribes that have been repressed by the government for a long time (and have frequently carried out attacks against the army and civilian tourists from time to time), and this is part of their payback. They were likely behind the attack on the gas refinery/pipeline that runs to Israel and Jordan, and they aren't going to show the kind of restraint seen elsewhere - and the military isn't going to show them restraint either.

The military serve by conscription. The vast majority are not members of the elite. Even many of the officers are not members of the elite class.

The situation with the police is very different. They are thugs.

I'm not as optimistic as you are.

The government and military have have years to plan what to do in case of a crisis, with response to varying scenarios. After all, that is what governments and the military do- prepare for any and all possibilities.

My fear is we are watching a well scripted response and the minute the military sees itself threatened, they will respond with varying and escalating force as needed,

I have noted many times that

When nations that are that are led by or are under the influence of tyrants or dictators, attempt to justify those actions, we can rightly assume that justification is false. Tyrants and dictators do not make moral choices, because moral choices can only lead to the demise of the tyranny.

Anyone that comes to the defense of tyrannical regimes and their leaders, have themselves made a conscious choice to defend and stand by what is immoral. They themselves consciously adopt an immoral posture.

Egypt will not fall to a tweeting crowd, in my opinion.

Many of the officers have received a lot of training in the U.S., with much exposure to American values and culture - which might affect their outlook towards repressing people protesting for increased democracy in Egypt.

Just asking because the news reports coming out about this are saying that the attack on the police station occured after about 1000 protesters peeled off a the larger demonstration.

That's part of what I meant in my comment about the demonstrators. They aren't doing it and playing the game as well. It's part of their strategy. They know the key is keeping and bringing the army to their side.

Why Title X is Critical

To the extremists now running the House of Representatives, this is somehow bad news. The Republican majority's draft resolution to fund the federal government, released today by the appropriations committee, would end all federal support for the Title X program. The budget resolution is the latest in series of Republican assaults on women's rights and women's health. Reps. Chris Smith (R-NJ), Joseph Pitts (R-Penn) and Mike Pence (R-IN) are all pushing bills that shred basic health care in their zeal to restrict access to women's health, including abortion. The Pence bill would gut the Title X program by defunding any health center that provides abortion services -- even though Title X has never paid for a single abortion. Pence has mounted a heartless, even vicious, assault on the millions of women who rely on Title X clinics for primary health care. Yet the appropriations bill is even harsher. It would simply kill the whole program.

Mubarak is a very old, and very stubborn man. It was a given from the start that he wouldn't fold easily. He might have been a dictator, but I don't think even he could have given an order to do what would have had to have been done to actually re-take control of the country. He would have had to kill tens of thousands, and he wasn't that evil.

The psychology of an old man decided the way this played out more than politics. Thank God his mommy loved him, or something. It could have been a LOT worse.

In the name of God the merciful, the compassionate, citizens, during these very difficult circumstances Egypt is going through, President Hosni Mubarak has decided to step down from the office of president of the republic and has charged the high council of the armed forces to administer the affairs of the country. May God help everybody.

Yeah, he caught everyone off guard - rehashing last week's speech, and the army didn't stand for that at all. They shuffled him off to Sharm el Sheikh.

Suleiman is in charge, and he's Mubarak's chosen successor, but there will likely be a power play for how things will transition to a new regime. Suleiman could take on a caretaker role - and allow for the creation of political parties and oversee the election process, but he's got to step aside once that's done since he's a part of the ancien regime.

Second that. Egypt could use a break. Revolutions are dicey. Power-hogs always try to horn in and usurp the revolution. Many have taken a turn to the dark side---the French and Russian revolutions being object lessons, and more recently, the Iranian. Others have worked out pretty well. Vigilance is the watchword: don't let any shady group get all [or even any] of the key cabinet posts.

Just give him a house in the Egyptian boonies somewhere, confiscate all but a few million of his fortune, and use it to build some schools and repair the museum. I hope they don't kill the old dude, bad as he was. It's better to let the people see old dictators become powerless than it is to see them torn apart by enraged mobs.

In 1776, 13 colonies declared independence. After 5 years of war (the real fighting stopped in 1781), 2 years of negotiation, 4 years of failed confederacy, we finally got to a workable state.

Which is to say we got to where the real work begins.

They won't, Mubarak is gone but he wasn't in any danger of being hung by the military in a public square. Right now all that has changed in the command structure, we'll have to wait and see what happens next.

Wow! This is a massively important event. Peaceful demonstrators forcing a sitting dictator to resign? Independent of whether or not there is substantial political change in Egypt - and it seems hard to believe that it won't be significantly more democratic - the symbolic importance of that event is far-reaching.

Yep I understand and I don't think the people there think much differently--at least if any of the comments coming out of there right now are an indication.

My point was just that talking about 'odds' at this point is speculating into the wind. Too many factors at play right now as well as a whole bunch that will come into play as time goes on.

To use a cliche. They're in a uncharted territory right now.

Mubarak was much more than just the military. The military is comprised of hundreds of thousands of conscripted civilians. The military has given every indication thus far of supporting a change to a true democracy.

There is no way that the secret police will be able to operate in the future the way they were under Mubarak. And again, the symbolic importance of this event on a geopolitical scale is very, very significant.

As much as nobody wants to give Mubarak any credit, he does deserve some. He is a large part of the reason there weren't huge numbers of deaths.

He's not quite the monster that many think he is. He's certainly not a folk hero, but really, his decisions regarding what he wouldn't do saved a lot of people. A crueler man may have been able to regain control at the cost of rivers of blood.

His decision last night could have been a disastrous blunder, but for the restraint of the demonstrators not making an all out assault on the government buildings and presidential palace.

It will make for a gripping history book of how this transition occurred, and who was responsible for setting Mubarak straight on his need to exit stage left, and how Mubarak tried to hold on just a wee bit longer despite the Army's declaration for him to do otherwise.

In the end, it was the Army that led the way.

I made the mistake of scanning the right wing blogs after not seeing a thread on Egypt on here yet. Here, I see a celebration with some reasonable comments about it being only a first step. Elsewhere on right it's either bad news outright, or bad news because the POTUS may get some credit.
Some would rather see the Egyptian revolution fail badly so they could lay the blame on Obama. BTW, I think the POTUS had very little to do with it either way, he just walked a tight rope.

Hopes like that are just despicable. A revolution is not going to fail bloodlessly, or without wrecking havoc on a society. It will be people, families, and lives getting destroyed. And they hope that happens for in order to claim trivial political points. (spit)
