It's a wee bit tricky, considering that potatoes have exactly one parent, (they sprout from a bit of an old potato that was stuck in the ground.)
On the other hand, the same actor has played more than one role before.

Hey, a potato "parent" DIES to give birth to dozens of plants which will have dozens of potatoes.
That's some pretty impressive parenting.

The song was written about the G20 protests. That's why it was staged the way it was.

It's not cognitive dissonance. The song was written from the point of view of the G20 protesters because the band were caught in the middle of it while on tour.

It took two years, a volunteer crew of more than 100 people, and post production resources donated by Industrial Light + Magic and Skywalker Sound. One of the first stop-motion films shot on a digital still camera. Official Selection: 70+ film festivals on nearly every continent, including Sundance, Seattle, São Paulo, Rome, and Hong Kong.[Link: www.wishnow.com...]

I'm not impressed by these gangs of anarchists who have the money and the time to attend globalist conventions in luxury resort towns. Normal working people can't afford to do that. So who is paying for all their plane tickets and hotel accommodations to "protest" the "rich"?

Like I said above-- I don't give a shit about the protesters. To me, that's not the point. It's just the context of what the song Muse played is about. That's it.

You can set a lot of money aside when you a)have a non-minimum wage job b) don't have dependents c)don't invest in the latest and greatest tech and d)avoid recreational spending like the movies/starbucks/alcohol. You can also get a lot more bang for your buck when traveling when you a)sleep on someones floor rather than a mote b)know about the trip a year in advance and c)only bring 1 change of clothes.
Sufficient dedication can get you far.

Minimum wages only pays for rent, utilities, food, clothes, etc.
Someone else would have to be paying for your day-to-day expenses for you to save enough to fly to another country.

Shame of Britain's Muslim schools: Secret filming shows pupils being beaten and 'taught Hindus drink cow p***'
t is an assembly hall of the sort found in any ordinary school. Boys aged 11 and upwards sit cross-legged on the floor in straight rows. They face the front of the room and listen carefully. But this is no ordinary assembly. Holding the children’s attention is a man in Islamic dress wearing a skullcap and stroking his long dark beard as he talks.
‘You’re not like the non-Muslims out there,’ the teacher says, gesturing towards the window. ‘All that evil you see in the streets, people not wearing the hijab properly, people smoking . . . you should hate it, you should hate walking down that street.’
He refers to the ‘non-Muslims’ as the ‘Kuffar’, an often derogatory term that means disbeliever or infidel.
Welcome to one of Britain’s most influential Islamic faith schools, one of at least 2,000 such schools in Britain, some full-time, others part-time. They represent a growing, parallel education system.
The school is the Darul Uloom Islamic High School in Birmingham, an oversubscribed independent secondary school. Darul Ulooms are world-renowned Islamic institutions and their aim is to produce the next generation of Muslim leaders. In fact, these schools have been described as the ‘Etons of Islam’.
This school is required by its inspectors to teach tolerance and respect for other faiths. But the Channel 4 current affairs programme Dispatches filmed secretly inside it – and instead discovered that Muslim children are being taught religious apartheid and social segregation.
Nasty stuff.

Who remembers their first R&R concert? For me it was the Stones, 1964, they did not even have a hit song. Did not hear one note due to the screaming young girls. They were British and that was enough then.
Been a fan forever though. Greatest rock band of all time. So say I.

My husband and I went to dinner with friends tonight and I heard a slightly interesting story. It is funny as my husband's first cousin called today and told him news about his job. The cousin is a petroleum engineer and a department head for a large petroleum company. My husband's friend is a vice-president for a company the makes oil field equipment. My husband's other friend also is in management for another oil company. The cousin already lives in Houston and the other two friends anticipated moving to Houston this summer. These are completely separate companies.
Two have been notified this week that the moves to Houston are off. It seems the headquarters are moving to Europe. My husband's cousin's company is also moving their headquarters to Europe. The friend that is the vice-president of the oil field tool company said Europe is closer to the Middle East and Africa. It is also an easier commute to China. He said he anticipates all oil companies to follow the same path.
They said globalization puts America in kind of a tough position. We enjoyed being protected by two oceans but now it may play against us. Dinner was really interesting. I thought you might enjoy the gossip.

True. Those mid-90's shows were classics, and the Stones were at their peak of cultural influence. Heck, Melrose Place fought hard just to be allowed to use a RS song (Out of Tears) in one of their episodes. And Start Me Up was the song Microsoft used for the launch of Windows 95/

I saw that concert at the Omnimax at the Chicago's Museum of Science and Industry. Great stuff. The only classic Stones song they didn't do was "Sympathy for the Devil". But I think that was because kids were allowed to see the show and that song isn't child friendly. It's a very good song, though.

Oh Maria, I'm so sorry I wrecked your wedding
You've just gotta believe me
But just the thought of you takin' your clothes off for that jerk
Oh, it got me drinkin' and then suddenly I'm staggerin' into church
And I'm dancin' like Baryshnikov all across the high altar
Oh I bet that you're still mortified
But just think, girl,
No one's ever gonna be forgetting
The day I wrecked your wedding.

Also helps if you share rent for apartments and utilities with 2 to 4 other people.
I managed to put my way through college (probably like many others here) on minimum wages. Paid back all of my loans for college on wages just above minimum wage while working my way up to a sufficient salary to be able to afford some luxuries. i.e. android tab 7

I'm sure McCain voting against MLK day is irrelevant. Why won't Obama/Holder made a federal case out of those two black NBP guys in Illinois that intimidated us months later when we saw them on FOX News? me and shuffle don't get along. If I hit shuffle, I get ambient 30 minute soundscapes up against some 300 bpm death metal songs, with the occasional prog rock epic, Cyndi Lauper tune, or some deep track on a skinny puppy record that's mostly screaming and a drum machine

I've been in Austin (as in visiting, not driving through) only once - went dancing downtown at the place known as the local spot for Salsa dancing. People were friendly (dancers usually are), but on the whole I concluded that Texas is just too, well, cowboy to do justice to the Caribbean influenced dance form.
I've driven through Texas a few times, and stayed here or there (San Antonio, Austin, El Paso, Amarillo ...) Certainly has a definite nature about it.

Italian Women Protest Against Silvio Berlusconi
"More than 100,000 Italian women and their supporters turned out across the country to protest against Premier Silvio Berlusconi, saying his dalliances with young women humiliate the sex as a whole and degrade female dignity.Backers of the 74-year-old Berlusconi, who is under investigation for allegedly paying for sex with a 17-year-old girl, dismissed the protests as strictly political.
The teenager, a Moroccan night club dancer, has said Berlusconi lavished cash and jewelry on her. Both deny having had sex with each other.
Prostitution isn't a crime in Italy, but paying a minor for sex is. Prosecutors are requesting to put him quickly on trial in what has been the most sensational probe against Berlusconi in over a decade of criminal cases against him, mainly for dealings in his billion-dollar empire of TV, film, advertising and other business interests."
&
In the main protest, Rome's Piazza del Popolo, a central square which can hold about 100,000 people, was packed with mothers, daughters, grandmothers and many husbands and boyfriends as the music blasted across the space, including Aretha Franklin's song "Respect."

I'm not impressed by these gangs of anarchists who have the money and the time to attend globalist conventions in luxury resort towns. Normal working people can't afford to do that. So who is paying for all their plane tickets and hotel accommodations to "protest" the "rich"?
I know this was posted much earlier in the thread, but its so incredibly wrong that I have to comment. The majority of anarchists are indeed quite poor (although not necessarily). But when there is an anarchist presence at something like the G20 in Toronto, its not like anarchists are flying in from all over the globe. I'd say the vast majority (maybe 90 percent) were from southern Ontario. Those who traveled from farther away often came together in buses, splitting the cost. Some still hitchhike. Toronto was relatively easy to get too, and its a big city, not a luxury resort town. The G8 component of the meeting was held at a smaller northern town in Ontario, but there was virtually no anarchist presence there.
Secondly, it is hilarious that you think they are staying at hotels. There are huge networks and they help each other out, offering accommodation/food etc. I myself stayed at such a house during the G20 in Toronto (I was writing a story on the whole thing). They dumpster dived for food and cooked for everyone. I spent nearly nothing while I was there. Your suggestion that someone is bankrolling these protests is bizarrely conspiratorial.

About a week ago, 20-year-old Travis Broyles woke up to news that his driver's license had been suspended for failing to pay a speeding ticket.
Then, when he logged onto his computer, his e-mail contained a series of overdraft alerts from his bank.
Broyles hung his head. He'd been between jobs since being let go from a full-time gig as a copywriter in Atlanta, where he lives.
"I said, 'You know what, I'm not leaving bed until I do something about this,'" he tells Weekends on All Things Considered host Guy Raz.
So Broyles rolled over, grabbed his computer and wrote an ad to place on Craigslist.
Web Resources
See Broyles' Craigslist Ad
Follow Broyles' Progress On His Blog'I DO ANYTHING'
The title of the ad is "I DO ANYTHING." Broyles was serious. "I will do whatever you want me to do for less money than whoever you are paying to do it now," he wrote.
Want him to compose and perform your own personal theme song? $20.
Want him to "try to fly in a public place for an hour"? $50.
Want him to "tell your kids which one is actually your favorite and what the others could do to improve their standing?" $100.
Oh — and if there's something you want him to do that he doesn't suggest in his ad, he just wants to emphasize: He does anything.
"Anything legal," he adds. "I've gotten a lot of e-mails asking me, 'Can you please punch this person in the face for me?' I'm not on board with that."
Broyles says he's received hundreds of e-mails from all over the world requesting he do anything. On Valentine's Day, he'll be someone's Valentine for $19.66.
"For texting, e-mailing and letting her know she's my one-and-only," he explains.

I'd agree that its stupid to think that dumpster diving is living off the grid. Of course its not. What it often is however, is free perfectly fine food. For many it helps them exist on otherwise minimum wage jobs. For others, it allows them to work less. Whatever works I guess.
247 | laZardo Sun, Feb 13, 2011 11:41:17pm |
So I'm reading that "What to do if the Russians come" that Sergey linked a couple days ago and there is something nervously foreboding about their section on the John Birch Society:
Even more encouraging is the example of Piasecki, once the leader of the very small and very extreme Polish Fascist party. When he fell into Russian hands, he was told by Ivan Serov himself, deputy head of the Soviet secret police, that he was as good as dead already, but if he agreed to collaborate, the Russians could use him. He was made head of PAX, a body directed toward the subversion of the Catholic Church and, at the same time, was allowed or encouraged to carry out private financial transactions that made him the richest man in Poland. So you can see that there is no need to despair, and that, paradoxically, if you are a right-wing politician with a strong anti-Communist record, you may yet have a better future (at least for the time being) than many of your more "progressive" colleagues.

From Fox Nation:
Horseman of Apocalypse Shows up in Cairo?
This is an incredible piece of video. At the 1:20 mark you clearly see some greenish figure moving through the crowd.Between the crowds of protesters and barricades, the video shows a flowing, pale green image that resembles an erect rider atop a horse in Medieval-like barding. The ethereal figure remains for a few moments before floating over protesters' heads and off the screen.
Is this the Fourth Horseman of the Apocalypse?
I have no words... :P

Let's face it, the "grid" is incredibly wasteful. The term off has multiple meanings, "living off the grid" doesn't have to mean living away from, without or independent of society anymore than the term "living off the land" means life aboard a boat at sea.

Thomas Friedman lets Israel have it:
Rather than even listening to what the democracy youth in Tahrir Square were saying and then trying to digest what it meant, this Israeli government took two approaches during the last three weeks: Frantically calling the White House and telling the president he must not abandon Pharaoh – to the point where the White House was thoroughly disgusted with its Israeli interlocutors – and using the opportunity to score propaganda points: “Look at us! Look at us! We told you so! We are the only stable country in the region, because we are the only democracy.’’
Israel’s government seemed oblivious to the irony of its message: “We are your only reliable ally because we are a democracy and whatever you do don’t abandon Mubarak and open the way there for democracy.’’
...
Well, that’s what happened here. The ferocity and popularity of Mubarak’s ouster should have told Israelis that they need to get to work immediately on building a relationship with the dynamic new popular trend here, not to be trying to cling to a dictator who was totally out of touch with his people. And, as we sit here today, the popular trend is not with the Muslim Brotherhood. Indeed, what makes the uprising here so impressive – and in that sense so dangerous to other autocracies in the region – is precisely the fact that it is not owned by, and was not inspired by, the Muslim Brotherhood.

It will be painted as a foreign policy "disaster" and a foreboding of the Caliphate. The Pale Rider is just a warning of what we will see.

I have no doubt that any truly representative government in Egypt will have voices that hold to religiously conservative Islam and that there will even be some who are influence by the MB.
However, I also am quite sure that what we are seeing going on in Egypt is much more complex than the Beckian/Geller-ite crowd will ever acknowledge.

Obama to offer $3.7 trillion budget blueprint
Ultimately, the leaders are going to have to try and sell the American people the truth - though I expect them to put it off to the very, very end.
And what is the "truth"? In this case, that that Reagan voodoo type of economics is doo-doo.

Sigh... the Vatican is at it again. They are lamenting that world population growth is actually slowing down.
At UN, nuncio laments falling birthrates, links economic growth, rising population
Addressing the United Nations Economic and Social Council on February 11, Archbishop Francis Chullikatt lamented the extent of world poverty and urged a UN body to view the family, founded upon the marriage of a man and a woman, as central to development.
[...]
“While policy makers often state that population growth is detrimental to development, the reality is that where economic growth has increased, it is often accompanied with population increases,” the archbishop continued. “In developed regions, we are now witnessing dwindling and ageing populations and many nations are struggling to maintain social services and economic growth as the ratio of workers to non-workers decreases. In the developing regions, we are witnessing an unprecedented decline in fertility [and] birth rate – a decline advocated often as the best means to achieve development. However, many nations in the developing world are now at risk of growing old before they grow rich.”
Yes, that's right, the problem the world faces is that there just isn't enough people.

Krugman hits a home-run:
On Friday, House Republicans unveiled their proposal for immediate cuts in federal spending. Uncharacteristically, they failed to accompany the release with a catchy slogan. So I’d like to propose one: Eat the Future.
[...]
The key point to understand is that while many voters say that they want lower spending, press the issue a bit further and it turns out that they only want to cut spending on other people.
That’s the lesson from a new survey by the Pew Research Center, in which Americans were asked whether they favored higher or lower spending in a variety of areas. It turns out that they want more, not less, spending on most things, including education and Medicare. They’re evenly divided about spending on aid to the unemployed and — surprise — defense.
The only thing they clearly want to cut is foreign aid, which most Americans believe, wrongly, accounts for a large share of the federal budget.
Pew also asked people how they would like to see states close their budget deficits. Do they favor cuts in either education or health care, the main expenses states face? No. Do they favor tax increases? No. The only deficit-reduction measure with significant support was cuts in public-employee pensions — and even there the public was evenly divided.
The moral is clear. Republicans don’t have a mandate to cut spending; they have a mandate to repeal the laws of arithmetic.
[...]
I call this the Las Vegas Worldview. That something can be had for nothing. And, I'm afraid a large share of our fellow citizenry fall into this trap.

Niall Ferguson Blasts Obama's Foreign Policy
[Link: www.thedailybeast.com...]
The contrast between the foreign policy of the Nixon-Ford years and that of President Jimmy Carter is a stark reminder of how easily foreign policy can founder when there is a failure of strategic thinking. The Iranian revolution of 1979, which took the Carter administration wholly by surprise, was a catastrophe far greater than the loss of South Vietnam.Remind you of anything? "This is what happens when you get caught by surprise," an anonymous American official told The New York Times last week. "We've had endless strategy sessions for the past two years on Mideast peace, on containing Iran. And how many of them factored in the possibility that Egypt moves from stability to turmoil? None."
I can think of no more damning indictment of the administration's strategic thinking than this: It never once considered a scenario in which Mubarak faced a popular revolt.

Because single payer health care does, in fact, control costs.
Medicare and government health schemes, both here and overseas, spend far, far less in wasted administrative costs than private schemes. That's actual saved money. The colossal waste of healthcare dollars on administrative costs, marketing, and other things that do not benefit either doctors or patients in any way is one of the biggest factors in the spiraling costs of health care, and these elements either vanish or are substantially reduced in public health plans.
That alone would reduce costs to sustainable levels. However, public plans and national pharmacies also allow the power of economies of scale, where the huge single player can much more effectively negotiate lower prices for drugs and health care. Every other First World nation does it.
Single payer health care and a national pharmacy are the only ways in which health care costs will be controlled. It will, however, take years to get there, for no other reason than huge swathes of the American public have been fooled into voting against their own interests by slogans.

Oh, psh. That was meant to be partially facetious. The amazing thing about a bureaucracy is that the process is, by definition, guaranteed to produce results in a finite period of time. The relative inefficiency of such is left as an exercise for the reader.

Boehner says facts show Obama a Christian, citizen
[Link: news.yahoo.com...]
"WASHINGTON – House Speaker John Boehner says Americans have a right to think what they want to think, even when they're wrong about President Barack Obama's citizenship and his religion.
Some people believe that Obama, a native of Hawaii, was actually born outside the U.S. or in some other way is not a natural-born citizen eligible to be president. There is also a persistent belief among some that Obama, a Christian, is actually a Muslim.
When the host of NBC's "Meet the Press" asked Boehner whether he, as speaker of the House, had a responsibility to "stand up to that kind of ignorance," Boehner told David Gregory: "It's not my job to tell the American people what to think. Our job in Washington is to listen to the American people."
Boehner continued: "Having said that, the state of Hawaii has said that he was born there. That's good enough for me. The president says he's a Christian. I accept him at his word." He later called those "the facts" of Obama's background."

1) "The Government" didn't get us into this deficit. Republican leaders of the government did by increasing spending and refusing to increase revenue by appropriate taxation.
2) I still trust any government agency more than I trust any insurance company I've ever had to deal with.
That's almost entirely accurate. I've said 183 times (count 'em/) that Bush increased spending by 104% during his 8 years and now Obama has matched that in just 2 short years. Almost all of those increases have nothing to do with non-discretionary spending.
Check out the graph in this article:

(notice that tax revenues remain roughly static over the last 50 years?)
and the tax revenues during the Bush years:
[Link: www.usgovernmentrevenue.com...]
Tax revenues during the Bush years increased (with the exception of 1 year), the problem wasn't that we weren't bringing in enough tax money but that we continually raised spending rates well above what we were bringing in. It's not about tax rates, it's never been about tax rates, it's about spending.

We were not dressed for the climate. It was late November and already snow flurries, and we were coming from Israel and had only light sweaters. Not much fun seeing the sights, and the lunch at the Jewish Community Center was way overpriced.
We did meet some interesting people. Everyone wanted to stop and chat with the Juden. At the Frankfurt JCC and synagogue (which is absolutely gorgeous, and worth the trouble of leaving the airport!) no one wanted to speak German. Preferred languages were Hebrew, Russian and English.

The mixed messages have been confusing and at times embarrassing — a reflection of a policy that, by necessity, has been made up on the fly. “This is what happens when you get caught by surprise,” said one American official, who would not speak on the record. “We’ve had endless strategy sessions for the past two years on Mideast peace, on containing Iran. And how many of them factored in the possibility that Egypt,” and presumably whatever dominoes follow it, “moves from stability to turmoil? None.”

I agree that Wisner and Clinton went off-message in a stupid and embarrassing way.
To me, the right answer was pretty obvious: keep in close touch with the Egyptian military, with whom we have a deep relationship, and otherwise, just keep saying that we support democracy in Egypt, just like we do everywhere else. And then stay the hell out of the way, lest we screw things up.
Doing much more than that risks massive blowback.

I would hope that if there was one thing the people in this country could agree on it's that we would always stand with whomever is putting their lives/well-being on the line in order to bring individual freedoms (freedom of religion/press/speech) to their country. Boiler-plate talk about "democracy" doesn't cut it, especially if the majority of the country in question believes apostates should get the death penalty. That's how you end up with Hamas/Hezbollah in charge. Rolling around in the hay with pieces of shit just to keep "stability" doesn't accomplish anything other than leaving you covered with crap.

Once the shit hit the fan we even stopped talking the good talk. You don't think those young Egyptians will remember that?
This isn't anything new for us, we do this to everybody. For example, look at what happened after the first gulf war and how we've dealt with Iran. I think we're getting our metaphors mixed. I want my government to support to those people who are pushing for individual freedoms. Not just in Egypt but everywhere. If that means giving them money then so be it. It's better, in my mind, to give the pro-freedoms crowd money for political uses than to give it to the government to buy tear gas.

It's kind of baffling that you think, with the attitudes people have in the Middle East towards the US, that the US funding movements attempting to topple the government wouldn't have the rather obvious downside-- i.e. that they could simply be painted as pawns of the US.
If you're simply saying we shouldn't support tyrants, I'm on board with that. But the idea of 'getting off the sidelines' in the Middle East sounds great, but is really dim.

We gave Egypt a lot of money for a lot of years to essentially bribe them to not attack Israel.

So... Lady Antebellum won a whole lot of awards last night at the Grammy's. Interesting turn our music industry is taking, awarding top honors to a musical group who's very name celebrates the racist south, before the civil war.
Antebellum, latin for "before the war" as per Wiki " Specifically, the era in the history of the United States after the American Revolution and the establishment of the U.S. as a sovereign nation, yet before the U.S. Civil War. "
The overt and covert racism in this country is running rampant. Everything from very public dismissals of our Presidents policies, to the clever, but not so hidden meaning of the name of a COUNTRY AND WESTERN group.

Not all of it, but enough to look real bad. I would significantly discount the claims that he pilfered the $40 billion or more at the top end, but wouldn't double that he squirreled away a couple billion dollars that should rightfully belong to the Egyptian people.
Same goes for many of the cronies connected with him and whatever shell companies and entities he established to shield his assets from scrutiny.
Problem is that there's little chance that the monies will be fully recovered but that shouldn't stop them from trying to collect.
It's interesting to see how many people view the military junta as a step towards democracy, when they could just as easily turn away and select another leader from among their own cadre. That they haven't done so and are saying all the right things to the Egyptian people and the various opposition leaders who have come to the bargaining table speaks actually quite well of their professionalism and dedication to the state and future of Egypt.
They're looking to begin discussions on a new constitution within a couple of weeks, which is a hopeful sign as well.
Now, if only they can figure out how to deal with the high unemployment, poor socio-economic conditions and the lack of economic opportunities to expand and preserve rights that we take for granted here in the US and the West. Those issues, which helped spark the demonstrations in the first place aren't so easy to go away - not when so much of the country lives in abject poverty.

7:55 p.m. Imam Hossein Square in Tehran is currently the scene of clashes between protesters and security forces. And we can confirm that a protest took place today in the city of Rasht, on the Caspian Sea coast. To this point, that makes five cities where we can confirm protests have happened: Tehran, Isfahan, Shiraz, Kermanshah, and Rasht.

I didn't mean to imply that Lady Antebellum wasn't an overtly racist name. The 1920s were a dark time in America's political history. The KKK marched on Washington, we instituted a disgustingly racist immigration system and the federal government crushed the American socialist party.
For me, saying something is like the 20's isn't a compliment.

We had the Grammys going on in the background while the Mrs. was reading the final book of the Steeg Larrson trilogy and I was playing on the 'puter. Only time I looked up was when Mumford and Sons came on and had a real unique sound - with real musical instruments. The collaboration with Dylan and that other band didn't work nearly as well b/c Dylan sounded awful (when his mic was actually working).

Great song writer and lyricist. Awful voice. It's was pretty bad forty years ago and all the smoking he did did nothing to improve it since then. My brother has gotten bootleg tapes of concerts of his and says that he is essentially impossible to listen to live, and has been for at least a decade.

Confirmed: China Has World's No. 2 Economy; Passes Japan
""China passed Japan in 2010 to become the world's second-largest economy after the U.S.," The Wall Street Journal writes, adding that this is "a historic shift that has drawn mixed emotions in the two Asian powers: resignation tinged with soul-searching in long-stagnant Japan, pride but also caution in an ascendant China wary of shouldering new global responsibilities."
The Journal says "the Japanese government made official the long-expected flip Monday morning in Tokyo, reporting that the economy shrank at a 1.1 percent annual rate for the last three months of the year, a period when China's gross domestic product surged 9.8 percent from a year earlier. With those figures, Japan's full-year GDP was $5.47 trillion — about 7 percent smaller than the $5.88 trillion China reported in January."
America's GDP is approaching $15 trillion annually. And as the Brookings Institution reminded everyone over the weekend, on a per capita basis the U.S. economy is even further ahead of China's. In 2009, U.S. per capital GDP was nearly $42,000. China's was about $6,200."
