New Poll: 51% of Likely GOP Voters Are Birthers

Mass insanity
Wingnuts • Views: 34,012

It’s official: the loons really have taken over the GOP.

Birthers make a majority among those voters who say they’re likely to participate in a Republican primary next year. 51% say they don’t think Barack Obama was born in the United States to just 28% who firmly believe that he was and 21% who are unsure. The GOP birther majority is a new development. The last time PPP tested this question nationally, in August of 2009, only 44% of Republicans said they thought Obama was born outside the country while 36% said that he definitely was born in the United States. If anything birtherism is on the rise.

UPDATE at 2/15/11 3:26:11 pm

Here’s Chris Matthews on this new poll, from today’s Hardball.

No wonder why Boehner is afraid to call them out. What's truly said is only above a fourth believe he's a citizen. This isn't 50-50. More like 60-40 and I am being generous.

From The Daily Dish

Greg Sargent notices something interesting in the PPP poll showing how unhinged GOP primary voters are on the question of Obama's very legitimacy as president: among non-Birthers, Sarah Palin has a favorable/unfavorable rating of 41 - 52. Among Birthers, it's a whoppingly favorable 83 - 12, far higher than anyone else.

It seems fair to speculate that the success of Palin's approach -- her grievance-mongering, her strident attacks on Obama, her virtuosity in crafting the most lurid formulations to paint Obama as an alternately weak and tyrannical figure -- is rooted in her unique ability to speak directly to the far right wing base's seething underbelly of anti-Obama hatred.

Yep, yep and yep.

I wonder how much that percentage has increased since they been driving all the rational folks from the party.

5 jc717  Tue, Feb 15, 2011 3:05:37pm

I wonder if more Republicans are becoming birthers or if the rational ones are not excited about the current crop of wingnut candidates and thus have no intention of voting in the primaries.
Either way this is pretty ridiculous.
Then again, about the same % of all Americans believe that some old dude created the universe 10k years ago; you'll never go broke betting on the idiocy of the masses.

Well I am not shocked at all. Sarah and the Birthers is a perfect match since she's the one who likes to drive home the meme about Obama being "different" by far the most of any contender.

8 Killgore Trout  Tue, Feb 15, 2011 3:07:08pm

I thought this was funny....

There is really a remarkable divide in how the birther and non-birther wings of the GOP view Sarah Palin. With the birthers she is a beloved figure, scoring an 83/12 favorability rating. Non-birthers are almost evenly divided on her with 47% rating her positively and 40% unfavorably.

This is yet another poll where we find Palin with the highest favorability among Republican primary voters but still lagging in the horse race. 65% have a positive opinion of her compared to 58% for Huckabee and 55% for Romney and Gingrich. Her problem is that even though they like her, few GOP voters think Palin's qualified to be President. Asked whether she's more qualified to be President or Vice President, only 29% of voters place her in the top spot compared to 46% who say she'd be a more appropriate number 2.

Even her supporters know she's not qualified. Pretty amazing.

What's sad is when Republican officials do call out the birther nonsense like McCain did in 2008 or Mike Castle did last year, they showered with boos. It seems to me the way you make your name in the modern GOP is by being all crazy about the president. These voters would rather hear that Obama isn't a Christian and wants to destroy America rather than Obama is well intentioned but wrong.

Shit sometimes they play the not real meme when it involves more liberal parts of the state. A McCain surrogate as well as then Governor Palin got in to some heat here for talking about the "Real Virginia" on the campaign trail basically saying that people who live in my more liberal northern part of the state somehow aren't real Virginians since we're more liberal than the downstaters. It went over real well with the crowd of course. And then there was George Allen's Macaca remark "welcoming" the kid who by the way was Virginia educated all the way through his life to "real Virginia."

Honestly what struck me abotu the whole thing was how it was in such contrast to the Obama campaign. Obama was willing to campaign in parts of Virginia where Democrats have done poorly in the past. A weaker candidate in both character and mind would have just ceded those areas as lost but Obama fought for every vote he could get in Virginia. McCain more or less gave it up.

That question is so badly worded as to be meaningless.

I would say that Bush "knew about the 9/11 terrorist attacks in advance. " for a given value of the phrase in so far as "Bin Laden Determined to Attack America" and all that.

I think that he knew that something was coming and he did nothing to stop it out of a combination of ignorance /pride but not actual malice.

I live in The Woodlands, TX. It's a mega-burb forty miles north of Houston. I drove to Conroe yesterday to get the registration of my truck renewed. It's a town of probably 60,000, and 59,950 of them voted for McCain. Anyway, I'm walking into the tax office, and there's a booth of Larouche supporters getting petitions signed to have Obama removed from office via the 25th Amendment. On the front of the booth was a placard of Obama with the Hitler mustache, and a line of people signing up for something they know nothing about. I'm sure it will come as a shock to all of you here that every single person signing up were white.

But the Teabaggers are all about "fiscal responsibility." Uh-huh.

Democrats in America are evenly divided on the question of whether George W. Bush knew about the 9/11 terrorist attacks in advance. Thirty-five percent (35%) of Democrats believe he did know, 39% say he did not know, and 26% are not sure.

Republicans reject that view and, by a 7-to-1 margin, say the President did not know in advance about the attacks. Among those not affiliated with either major party, 18% believe the President knew and 57% take the opposite view.

Overall, 22% of all voters believe the President knew about the attacks in advance. A slightly larger number, 29%, believe the CIA knew about the attacks in advance.

I would have never guessed that Manassas went for Obama. I mean I am not surprised it's more Democratic than the surrounding areas of PW County but I always thought Manassas itself would still have gone for McCain.

So often I see political strategist making mistakes like this and it reminds me of my high school writing teacher advising us: "Show, don't tell."

Back is 2004 I remember someone from John Kerry's campaign saying that he was going duck hunting to win the votes of hunters and I thought "No, you don't win the votes of hunters by saying that. You win them by saying, 'He's going duck hunting 'cause he really loves hunting ducks.'"

It's good as far as a reality war film can be called good.

Yeah the Kerry campaign did a piss poor job here. Did not feel their presence here at all. I mean granted the political climate was different here in 2008 than 2004 but they were virtually invisible. The Obama campaign meanwhile had a big campaign rally that my cousin went to in the heart of Loudoun County which hadn't gone Democratic on a presidential level since LBJ.

There is some nuance between canceling the peace treaty and declaring war. Politifact ignores the fact theat the Muslim Brotherhood does endorse terrorism against Israel. IIRC the official MB position is "right of return" followed by elections with effectively destroys Israel.

Hey all! It's been a busy day...

So just reviewing:

1. Fox News did a successful big lie with the nirth certifikat nonsense and effectively brainwashed 51% of the GOP, making it the Goebbels Old Party for some.

2. Republicans are trying to legalize murdering medical doctors who don't believe that life begins from the moment you unhook her bra. I doubt that will pass, but the fact they are emboldened enough to try speaks volumes, making it the Rethuglican party for some.

3. The Republicans have tried to redefine rape, allow wingnut hospitals to let women die rather than receive and emergency abortion (hey, if she dies, you loose the fetus too morons!) making them the Grotesque Old Party for anyone who doesn't hate women.

4. The Republican privatized prison system has had its first major conviction of corrupt judges unfairly sentencing children for kickback money from the prison corporation truly making them the Gomorrah Old Party... truly the big sin there was less of the interesting sex acts and more of the corrupt greedy courts.

5. Beck and Fox continue to delude masses about communists everywhere but that is another big lie.

And oh yes, I had an amazing Valentines' day. I must remember that when the realities of the news seem a bit too much.

On a side note, some Jewish women are very opposed to doing something for V-day. Others see it just like every other woman in America. Personally, I rather like the chance to cook a great meal and show some appreciation.

Very well said. The GOP has convinced the masses to completely sell themselves out. It is astonishing. How could anyone be against having more affordable healthcare for example?

How could anyone be against more affordable education, or clean air?

The GOP has created a perverse set of morons who are like an inverse French Revolution calling for more power to the aristocrats. Anyone who thinks the GOP which has waged a war on the American middle and working class for the last 40 years, is somehow out for them (unless they are a white plutocrat) is a fool.

166 Talking Point Detective  Tue, Feb 15, 2011 5:18:23pm

More Fox News evidence that Obama is a secret Muslim:

Critics Slam U.S. Government, Media for 'Weak' Response to Anti-Christian Attacks

At least 65 Christians have been killed in attacks across the Muslim world in recent months, sparking sharp criticism from human rights groups that charge the U.S. government and media aren’t doing nearly enough to speak out against the violence.

[...]

Even the condolence statements have come up short, said Shea. When the Obama administration first noted an Oct. 31 church bombing in Iraq, for example, it sent “a general condolence to Iraqis that didn’t even mention the word Christian or churches -- even though it was a packed Sunday worship service for Christians that was blown up.”

First the war on Christmas, now proof that Obama favors murdering Christians as long as it's done by Muslims. Why would anyone need any more proof that Obama is a Kenyan Muslim and so, has no birth certificate?

Ex-friend of mine, who went full-teabagger a couple of years ago, loved to carry on about how evil public education was and how it should be replaced by the private sector.

In her home state, she attended a publicly funded state college.

After that, she came to Canada to attend a college here, despite the same program being available in American schools closer to where she lived, because (even with international student fees) tuition in Canada was cheaper. Why? Because our schools, even after cutbacks, even to this day, get more public funding than American schools.

You will find that all teabags are opposed to any social benefit - unless they are receiving it. The essence of teabaggery economically is a desire for all of the benefits of society with none of the duty and after making contributions themselves. They are not only parasites, but have a philosophy of it and are too stupid to even see that basic truth.

Teabag congress critters love their healthcare.

Teabags whine endlessly about medicare or social security until they need it.

Teabags love roads and such but hate paying for them.

Yeah, but I don't believe those stats.

The reason I don't is because of all of those liberals out there working in the inner city and doing teach America and stuff - and the fact that as per blood drives, it always seems to be run by the campus hippies.

As to paying the same taxes, you sure whine about them helping others get things like food, shelter, medical care and educations... You know a few bucks or hours at the soup kitchen really doesn't address the issue...

Then there are the Black and Hispanic groups that are all about helping out their people. Lots of people s[pend lots of time working for the NAACP for example.

And then all of those lefty lawyers at places like SPLC...

True enough, but the fear of gay marriage and terrorism helped the gop a lot in 2004 as the war's popularity was beginning to fade by that point. Fear was a way for the gop to electorally hedge their bet on the war.

If birtherism helps the gop win in 2012, they'll deserve all the scorn heaped upon them and more. They will also likely sacrifice the vote of not just blacks but other minorities and immigrants for the next generation. That would be the silver lining in what would otherwise be the most contemptible moment in American electoral history. Even a stolen election, like 1960, pales by comparison.

As unseemly as it may sound, this is the likely gop calculus for 2012: "We're not gonna get any more of the non-white vote than the 20% we got last time. But Obama only got 43% of the white vote in 2008. If we can get that down below 40%, he's gonna lose those close purple states. And one way to do that is to muddy the waters about who he really is." Hence, no denunciation of the birthers.

I followed the link. The only named study referenced in the article is the Generosity Index from the Catalogue for Philanthropy. Most people haven't looked at how that index is done, and because they don't they do not realize it's a stacked deck.

Here's the methodology. The data source used is the IRS database for tax returns. AGIs for a state are averaged, then ranked. Then charitable contributions declared for deduction are averaged and ranked. The RANK of charitable contributions is then subtracted from the RANK of AGIs to create the index.

Can you see the flaw? Here's a clue: if you're number one in income, you cannot have a score better than zero.

Arthur Brooks, the author Kristof cites for his article, is president of the AEI (American Enterprise Institute for Public Policy Research). For those who haven't noticed, the AEI's research always says Republicans are better. Recently, the AEI has been a strong Tea Party supporter. Oddly, I find that when Brooks writes a book that says the Republicans and particularly the Tea Partiers are Better People I question it. When I discover he's using the Generosity Index as a part of his basis, I know I can safely ignore it.

271 wiffersnapper  Wed, Feb 16, 2011 7:04:10am

What's depressing is that even if Obama provided that birth certificate precisely the way birthers wanted it, they probably still wouldn't believe it. Instead of disagreeing with the president on his policies, they focus on something as pointless as this. It's been 2 years since Obama came to office. If you're still debating this instead of more important issues at hand, you've gone completely cuckoo.

272 skysoldier  Wed, Feb 16, 2011 7:09:35am

The old saying that "the masses are asses" still stands. It was as true when this was a right wing blog as it is now that it is a left wing blog. In 2009 the same polling company found that 22% of the people of New Jersey (both parties) either believed or were not sure if Obama was the anti-Christ. At the time of that poll 19 (32D) % thought GWB had prior knowledge of 9-11 and 21 (33R)% thought Obama was not a natural citizen.

Outrageous claims such as Bush orchestrated 9-11 or Obama is an African-Muslim-Communist Manchurian candidate are simply the way in which the inarticulate express anger at the situation they are facing. If indeed the number of "birthers" has increased that much in the last two years try to look at it less as there are really that many people that believe that nonsense as much as it is there are that many more people that are sick of the economy being in the tank still, sick of the policies and sick of the ever increasing spending.

The pendulum of American politics is swaying further and faster of the last couple of decades, it really has to stop. Obama, Pelosi and company overreacted to the Bush years and if the house majority is an indication of what the next Republican cycle will look like then they will overreact in their correction leading to an even bigger reaction from the left, how long before all these radical shifts topple the system?

Yes, most of us would like to see America go back to being center-right as it had been and do not need Glen Beck or stupid conspiracies to do it with. Of course, as I never had the thrill go up my leg I find it hard to relate to Chris Matthews.

The problem is that while overreaching on either side is destructive, the amount of overreach on each side is not equal.

Your post smacks to me of that constant reference to how a third of Democrats thought Bush knew the attacks were coming -- a point in which everyone forgets the context.

Context? For the three weeks prior to that poll, Tenet's book came out and the Big Fact from the book that came out on every single talk-show was that Bush had seen / been told of the assessment that Bin Laden was going to attack the US. When you read the question Rasmussen wrote keeping that in mind you see exactly how vague it really was. Does it mean Bush knew bin Laden was going to attack (yes, see title of report), or does it mean Bush knew bin Laden's group was going to hijack airliners (yes, that was in the report) or does it mean Bush knew the airliners were going to be used as guided missiles (no, not by any evidence I've seen)?

In the meantime you've got an explicit question (was Obama born in the United States?) to which 51% - not half, but 51%, said "no". Another quarter or so, just as with the attack question, didn't think they knew enough to be certain.

So yeah, it sounds like the magical balance fairy when the implication is that the left is as bad as the right.

Your comment is a good one. And, I agree that the right is worse than the left. But, this is my concern. I believe one of the reasons that the right made some significant political gains in 2010 was because the left came to power in 2006 and 2008 and attempted too much too quickly. I do not believe they did enough of the right things to improve the economy and I believe the state of the economy is hurting people. The risk now is that in 2012 will bring some even more dangerous right wingers to power. That is what I am talking about when I say that the overreaching and overreacting on both sides is destructive. I would be happy for you to tell me why I don't need to worry.

Ah. Actually, I think the right made significant political gains in 2010 because the left did NOT overreach -- as you said, did not do enough to improve the economy. A significant part of that was the active opposition to doing these things that came from the right.

I'm going to repeat that. There was no overreach from the left. There was underreach. The underreach was caused by the right's behavior. The right's behavior was driven by its large extremist plurality.

What did the left propose to do to improve the economy that would have made the difference that the right prevented them from doing?

Give a bigger stimulus.

Oh.

Give a bigger stimulus.

Sorry, that's incomplete. Give a bigger stimulus, and package it more heavily toward immediate expenditures instead of dragging it over a year and half of outlays. Use mostly outlays instead of tax credits and tax cuts.

In simple, use it as the nitrous oxide boost. That, after all, has worked well every time it was used in the past.

286 S'latch  Wed, Feb 16, 2011 8:48:48am

Yes, I can see how that would have worked. It is quite clear that the economy would be booming if we had done that. A little nitrous, as you say, good stuff.

Probably not booming (yet), but definitely out of the doldrums. Ah well. I'm going to end in this thread, thanks for discussing.

An appropriate response to the media asking about this issue should be this:

"I thought it was the job of the media to uncover the truth about these things. What have you discovered about this? With first amendment rights come responsibilities."

:)
