Middle East and North Africa in Turmoil

But Gaddafi hangs in there
Middle East • Views: 29,922

Massive protests are taking place throughout the Mideast and North Africa, triggered by events in Tunisia and Egypt. In Bahrain, the Sunni regime launched a swift and violent crackdown on demonstrators in the capital, killing at least three people.

In Libya’s capital, there were pro-Gaddafi demonstrators but no sign of unrest, although violent crackdowns on protesters were reported in other cities.

The situation in Bahrain may not be as clear cut. There have been multiple reports that the Saudis are assisting the Bahraini regime in putting down the protests - that they sent in 150 tanks and APCs, which might explain why they're much more willing to use deadly force than what we saw with the Egyptian army and protesters who expressed a kinship with each other.

Add to that the fact that there's a sectarian divide in Bahrain - that the regime is Sunni, but it's the Shi'a majority that's protesting, and you have another layer of discontent.

The Saudis want to quell the protests lest they spread to their country, which explains the Saudi motivations for getting involved.

I saw a very interesting statistic the other day. One in six Hessian mercenary that was sent to fight in the Revolutionary War deserted and stayed here.

Considering that they were being payed chicken feed, while their rulers were being paid handsomely, this makes sense.

This is the Republican Party:

Jim DeMint: President Barack Obama Is Not The Nation's Leader

Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC) doesn't think President Barack Obama should be considered the leader of the United States of America.

During a speech covering the national debt, earmarks, the 2012 Presidential election and the repeal of the health care law on Thursday, DeMint told members of the D.C. chapter of the conservative Federalist Society, "This whole idea that the President is the leader of our country is a mistake."

DeMint added, "Leadership starts in the homes in the communities, in businesses, in churches. I've lived in a community and I know where the leaders are and it's not in Washington. And this pretense that he's our nation's leader... I'm not just talking about Obama I'm talking about any President."

"A candidate who goes out and makes all these promises about what he's going to do in all areas of our society needs to be removed from consideration," DeMint said to applause from the audience.

"It's pretty clear this President is not going to lead," DeMint explained to his audience. "We've got to replace this President."

Continues.

Unfortunately, those of us in the U.S. and similar places which have a history of a relatively independent press assume that is the case throughout the world. In much of the world, and particularly in the theocracies and autocracies of the Middle East, the press is government controlled and acts as a propaganda arm of the government. Conversely, the governments themselves fully understand that Western media tends to be independent and report on what is actually happening. It is not surprising, therefore, that members of the Western media put themselves at risk of being attacked by some anti-government protestors who view them as government mouthpieces or by pro-government protestors who view them as a threat to the government.

OT: back talking to Hospice about Dad, he has finally made his choice, he is refusing all further medications and treatment. The only question now is whether he lives long enough to get him transferred into the Hospice "end of life" home where they will keep him doped up to the eyeballs and let him pass comfortably or whether he dies in the hospital while still in discomfort.

I did get his primary at the hospital to sign and also witness Dad signing a D.N.R. order today, so no resuscitation and no ventilator at least. He has made it clear that he just wants to go now, his choice, I'm just glad he finally made it. (Still crying though)

Oh wait! I thought we brought them democracy.

We did...

"Credit Obama, Not the Bush Administration, for Seeds of the Egyptian Revolution"

Neoconservative supporters of the war in Iraq are already claiming credit for the revolution in Egypt, calling it a victory for the Bush Administration’s so-called “freedom agenda.” But let’s be clear, the pro-democracy movement in Tahrir Square has much more in common with the grassroots, bottom-up spirit of the Obama campaign than the messianic, barrel-of-a-gun foreign policy pushed by George W. Bush.

The phone has been ringing off the hook today which is a sign that business is picking up. Once call was from a telemarketer trying to sell some anti texting while driving thing. I was polite and let him do his thing and then told him I don't own a cell phone and wasn't interested. He got snotty and said, "why don't you want to save children from needless car accidents?". I told him I don't like children. There was an awkward silence and he hung up. Heh.

Years ago, lounging around in my PJ's at home on a weekend morning and the doorbell rang. It was a guy selling funeral plans door to door. I was in my late 20's and this was the farthest thing from my mind as far as investments go. So I politely told him "not interested" and as I was closing the door he replied sarcastically "when will you be interested, when you are dead and your kids have to pay for it!" I whipped that door back open and headed toward him and at that point he literally ran down my front sidewalk. They don't call me "Big Steve" for nothing and even I would be scared of me coming after me in my PJ's

In 2008 Newt Gingrich appeared in an ad for wecansolveit.org, Al Gore's climate change organization that became Repower America. Now that climate change has no constituency in the Republican party he's changed his tune dramatically. This weekend at CPAC Gingrich called for the elimination of the EPA and the end of anti-pollution laws that limit coal mining and offshore drilling.

"We know that it is teamwork on and off the field that makes the Packers and Wisconsin great. As a publicly owned team we wouldn't have been able to win the Super Bowl without the support of our fans. It is the same dedication of our public workers every day that makes Wisconsin run. They are the teachers, nurses and child care workers who take care of us and our families. But now in an unprecedented political attack Governor Walker is trying to take away their right to have a voice and bargain at work. The right to negotiate wages and benefits is a fundamental underpinning of our middle class. When workers join together it serves as a check on corporate power and helps ALL workers by raising community standards. Wisconsin's long standing tradition of allowing public sector workers to have a voice on the job has worked for the state since the 1930s. It has created greater consistency in the relationship between labor and management and a shared approach to public work. These public workers are Wisconsin's champions every single day and we urge the Governor and the State Legislature to not take away their rights."

Exactly. You took some flak recently for saying something along the lines of there being more successful propaganda in the US than anywhere else - of course there are countries with more extreme propaganda (e.g. North Korea), but in places such as that, people live under constant duress and are actively forbidden from hearing alternative viewpoints.

In the US, there's no such coercion, and there almost doesn't need to be - too many voters have been almost Pavlovian-conditioned to hate the things that help them and love the things that hurt them.

Arizona , when I came to live there in the 1970's, was a place with a lot of employment possibilities and a low cost of living, especially houssing. And taxes were relatively low.

Now that that housing and the accompanying real-estate/mortgage industry has collapsed, the employment prospects have dried up, tourism is down due to the slow economy and the image of Arizona as a dangerous backwater.

Real estate has gone down a bit, but rental housing is scarce because banks would rather just sit on foreclosed houses rather than take the write-down involved in selling them, and while taxes are still low, so is the standard of public services, social services and education.

And Sherrif Joe Arpaio is considering running for congress...

There's a little more to it than that. Rehabbing, bankruptcy litigation, etc. all add many thousands (sometimes tens of thousands) to the costs lenders are faced with absorbing. Many lenders have entire departments dedicated to minimizing those costs, and establishing the point of loss they can take. In the case of credit unions, they need to walk a fine line between selling properties and how big of a hit the members can absorb.

Couple that with fewer buyers able to qualify, and there are a lot of houses banks are sitting on, and not necessarily for purely selfish reasons.

My (brown, latina) wife told me the other day "Honey, there is no fucking way we are ever visiting Arizona. Ever. I'm not really into being locked up for looking like a possible Mexican."

It's also worth noting that her formerly EXTREMELY conservative family has decided that they are never voting for any Republican candidate, ever again, at any level. They know the GOP hates them for who they are. My wife's father, who loved Bush, said the last time we went to visit them "I'll never be a liberal, but i'll probably vote Democratic for the rest of my life. Those people hate us. They really hate us." Her father is 58 years old, and has never voted for any candidate, at any level, who wasn't a Republican, in his entire life.

This is the consolation I take during these times. The GOP is shitting on people, and it sucks to watch, but as time passes, all the people they hate are getting the message loud and clear.

I think I made that in high school. Those days aren't just gone, they've been gone. Mayberry RFD is dead.

With prosperity comes increased prices and increased profits. But we're all supposed to go for that brass ring - make more and buy more - and if you're caught in the undertow, you become a casualty.

Wal-Mart didn't become the be-all end-all of the consumer world catering to people with an excess of money. Low and middle wage earners are the majority, and they want the most bang for their buck, even if it means buying cheap crap from China. The alternative is to work seven extra hours at your shit job you hate for an American made toaster. That is, if you can find one.

Parenthetically, this is why I am very worried about the 2012 election. Actual liberals are increasingly pissed off at being totally unrepresented, and I see a very strong possibility that Obama will be flanked from the left, splitting part of Obama's vote off, thus handing it to President Crazypants. I'm serious. I know a lot of liberals, and frankly, many of them hate Obama almost as much as the GOP. They feel unrepresented, and betrayed. Many of them will just stay home in 2012, and have said as much.

2012 is far from a slam dunk for Obama. He just moved too far to the right from the platform he ran on in 2008, and it's going to mean low turnout on the left.

His "base" doesn't really like him anymore. Sure, lots of center-right to moderate voters like him, but what about the actual left? Look on liberal blogs some time. It isn't exactly a lovefest for Obama.

So it might be a combination of ineptness, plus not quite doing what any particular side want consistently? For some they don't protect enough, for others they protect too much, and inbetween they have a bunch of regulations that many see as annoying bureaucracy at its best (in a negative sense)?

You would think that those who worry about not liberal enough would remember 2000. Not saying G.W Bush is as insane as Palin, Huckabee, or the others but you would think that would convince them. I understand what Fozzie means though. Guess it's why it amuses me why the right is convinced that Obama is a Socialist when there's doubt whether he's even so much a liberal.

Well, look at the crap with Logan. Jim Hoft screaming about how she's a liberal, and then Nir Rosen screaming about how she's a warmonger.

Breastfeeding was one of those basic mothering skills that was passed down to women by members of the family or the clan. It is not a basic instinctive thing, although the basic equipment and reflexes are there, it has to be learned in order to be effective.

As it died out in the 2nd has of the XXth century with the advent of bottles and formula, a lot of women who would like to breastfeed need basic assistance on how to go about it.

Well the there is a contingent according to some comments I've read that feels that a tax break or the illusion they're under that the gov't paying for it is just another step in the liberal/socialist/commie war on the family. You see breast pumps are mostly used by women who work and aren't at home, so the gov't promoting them this way means they are promoting women working and not staying home with their kids which is the way it should be. Women working = family destruction which is one of the reasons that America is in the state that it's in.

I've noticed over the past month a significant rise in my food bills. I don't pay attention to specific prices but I generally buy the same things all the time and know the general total amount I pay at checkout. It's been shocking a couple of times to the point that I've gone over my receipts to see if I was double charged on things. One average my total bills are about 10 to 15 dollars more then they were a few months ago.

This is another case clearly explained by evolution. As it turns out, some of our male ancestors actually had large breasts, but they sat around in the cave all day and played with themselves, never brought home the bacon, and never procreated. Therefor the large breasted male quickly exited the gene pool.

I thought the baby boomers were supposed to change the world...I guess the "flower power" Age of Aquarius generation was something of a mirage.

The left, like its counterparts on the right, never likes it when one of their own gets elected and actually has to be pragmatic. They value orthodoxy over results--Not only must they get what they want, but it must be pure and pristine.

The dissatisfied Left and Right, like the poor, will always be with us.
