Embarrassed Republicans Admit They've Been Thinking Of Eisenhower Whole Time They've Been Praising Reagan
FEBRUARY 21, 2011

GOP leaders "can't believe" they misattributed Eisenhower's breadth of vision and leadership to Reagan.

WASHINGTON—At a press conference Monday, visibly embarrassed leaders of the Republican National Committee acknowledged that their nonstop, effusive praise of Ronald Reagan has been wholly unintentional, admitting they somehow managed to confuse him with Dwight D. Eisenhower for years.

The GOP's humiliating blunder was discovered last weekend by RNC chairman Reince Priebus, who realized his party had been extolling "completely the wrong guy" after he watched the History Channel special Eisenhower: An American Portrait.

"When I heard about Eisenhower's presidential accomplishments—holding down the national debt, keeping inflation in check, and fighting for balanced budgets—it hit me that we'd clearly gotten their names mixed up at some point," Priebus told reporters. "I couldn't believe we'd been associating terms like 'visionary,' 'principled,' and 'bold' with President Reagan. That wasn't him at all—that was Ike."

"We deeply regret misattributing such a distinguished and patriotic legacy to Mr. Reagan," Priebus added. "We really screwed up."

I don't particularly care for Rahm for the same reasons I soured on Rove, they're master manipulators that can get lower than whale shit. However, unlike Rove (which seemed to me to be out for no one other than himself), Rove seems to want to help his hometown out by serving as mayor.

Ha! I really don't know anything about him but I like him for the same reason I liked Karl Rove; they both turn their opponents into raving conspiracy loons.

Karl Rove was a hack who was willing to use racism to get votes in South Carolina, and who was willing to pander to anti GLBT bigots (Teh fagz are coming to rape yer children) in much the same way.

He was a disciple of Lee Atwater

Atwater: You start out in 1954 by saying, "N*gger, n*gger, n*gger." By 1968 you can't say "n*gger" — that hurts you. Backfires. So you say stuff like forced busing, states' rights and all that stuff. You're getting so abstract now [that] you're talking about cutting taxes, and all these things you're talking about are totally economic things and a byproduct of them is [that] blacks get hurt worse than whites. And subconsciously maybe that is part of it. I'm not saying that. But I'm saying that if it is getting that abstract, and that coded, that we are doing away with the racial problem one way or the other. You follow me — because obviously sitting around saying, "We want to cut this," is much more abstract than even the busing thing, and a hell of a lot more abstract than "N*gger, n*gger."[6][7]

No need to make up conspiracy stories about him. He is disgusting enough in real life.

Prager and Medved were retorting about the Koch brother's influence today, diminishing it's importance and ridiculing the fact that it was brought up. Once pathetic point they both made was that the Koch $ was much less than union money.

A talking point making the rounds is 'it's not private unions, only public, and they are corrupt because of their influence.' I really don't see much of a difference between public and private: the Koch brothers are a private business entity.

I expect much better logic from them, but I guess I shouldn't.

Harry Reid: ‘The time has come for us to outlaw prostitution’

Sen. Harry Reid on Tuesday called for “an adult conversation” about prostitution in Nevada, saying it is an impediment to economic development because it discourages businesses from moving here.

“Nevada needs to be known as the first place for innovation and investment – not as the last place where prostitution is still legal,” he said in a speech to the Nevada Legislature.

It would also make it a lot safer for the sex workers. I don't like the idea of anyone selling their body for money, but if it's on the black market it is inherently dangerous. Those women at the Bunny Ranch are a lot safer and richer than women working the streets.

Hey Prostitution should be legal, but Prostitution (in my book) is the exchange of money for a service between two consenting adults... those who would try to have sex with children below the age of consent should still be brought ot justice...

No, it would remain illegal. At least with legalized prostitution, as Nevada does it they are inspected, watched and monitored. I don't think you will find child prostitution in the legal brothels. Child prostitution will be still around regardless of whether adult prostitution is legal or illegal.

No we shouldn't legalize it.

I'm a liberal band a big government liberal in some cases, but I believe that there "are no co-sensual crimes" and thus adult women (or men) being hookers should be legalized because it is trying to legislate morality that harms no one in and of itself.

This is the same reason I favor legalizing marijuana...

However child sex can not be cosensual by default and thus it should remain a crime.

Honestly I have a harder philosophical time figuring out why/how I can argue against keeping the harder drugs illegal than why children being forced / "of their own choice" selling their bodies in such a way...

There's more than one kind of corrupt influence. I've no love for the concept of public sector labor unions that go on strike. It's a setup tailor made for corruption. But the Koch brothers? The best that could be said for them would be that perhaps they've merely pushed to the bleeding edge of the line of what's legal, albeit gone well over the edge of what's proper.

To me there's not much point to a union that can't

1) Collectively Bargain

and

2) Go on strike.

With the exception in regards to #2 concerning the Police Officers union since I hear they have a special set up so that they get a better deal than most unions in exchange for agreeing not to strike since if they did cities would probably start to tear themselves apart....

2001: Koch Industries pays $25 million settlement for stealing oil from federal and Indian lands.

Some details:

Bill Koch says that the company took more oil than it paid for by cheating on measurements.
A gauger measures the volume and the quality of the oil that his company is buying. The buyer leaves his measurements behind on what’s called a "run ticket." It's an IOU to the well owner.
"What Koch was doing was taking all these measurements and then falsifying them on the run sheets," says Bill Koch. "If the dipstick measured five feet 10 inches and one half inch, they would write down five feet nine and one half inches."
That may not sound like much, but Bill Koch says that it added up. "Well, that was the beauty of the scheme. Because if they’re buying oil from 50,000 different people, and they’re stealing two barrels from each person. What does that add up to? One year, their data showed they stole a million and a half barrels of oil."
Bill Koch filed a lawsuit in federal court claiming that much of the oil collected by Koch Industries was stolen from federal lands. At the trial, 50 former Koch gaugers testified against the company, some in video depositions. They said Koch employees had a name for cheating on the measurements.
"We in the company referred to it as the "Koch Method" because it was a system for cheating the producer out of oil," said one of these gaugers, Mark Wilson.[Link: www.cbsnews.com...]

well that works in theory, but why give yet another reason to import 3rd world 13 year olds...

It's not just third world. I've seen some pathetic girls on the streets of what had been the eastern sector of Berlin. It's an uncomfortable fact that some sizable fraction of the working girl community, even in the West, is underage and not by just months. Overlapping this, a sizable fraction are slaves. Outright slaves, owned and bought and sold. The police, in those places, bought too, from a certain perspective.

Since it's all illegal, and it happens anyhow, it's hard to figure what more can be done. As we think about whether to modify our own laws regarding prostitution, some caution is in order. The business has its more than unsavory side.

True, but they asked for it. It was an illegal strike and you have to land on those with both feet. As it happened, the firing of the air traffic controllers was the moment several Soviet officials later said convinced them that Reagan was to be taken seriously. It convinced them that he was resolute in a way Carter had not been,

Oh, and this:

The company used the Koch method with virtually all its customers. In the 1980's alone, Koch records show those so-called adjustments brought the company 300 million gallons of oil it never paid for. And it was pure profit.

Bill Koch says that profits from that oil were a minimum of $230 million.

So paying a $25 million fine wasn't too hard.

Sophie: These are not small fines. Last year, my department handled a case where the company had to pay out 2.5 billion dollars.
Darren Hoffman: Oh yeah, everybody heard about that. But what the news didn’t tell you is that that company made $16 billion on the same drug. That fine was 14% of the profit. Fourteen. Percent. Heh. Legal safe abortion, any adult consensual sexual lifestyle, but no circumcision. That government will stay out of your bedroom, but will regulate the status of your penis. Go figure.

Despite my screaming rage about this dumbass measure, I should clarify that it takes about 7,000 signatures to put a measure on a San Francisco ballot, and I am highly skeptical that this thing has any chance of passing.

Please note, no Democratic presidential hopefuls or rising stars are signing on to this, funding for circumcision is not being challenged and defined out of existence on the floor of Congress, and the measure is not being replicated by a well-funded machine in blue strongholds across the country.

See I don't understand why you think this bill is a good thing. This is an out-and-out attempt to butcher unions. The union already agreed to cuts, so at this point, the only thing this clown wants is to union bust. And no good can come of that.

I see public sector unions as part of the problem and I want their power greatly curtailed. Leave it at that, since i don't want another blog skirmish right now.

All excellent points. I guess my own question is always, are we protecting sex workers from predators by making it illegal, or not?

Out of interest, did you ever answer as to why public unions are bad but private unions are just fine?

Yes, i did. To briefly recap, the answer is that say, an auto-workers union can organize and even strike for better pay and working conditions, but they cannot decide who owns the company they work for. By contrast, a public sector union can directly try to put into office the people with whom it would be negotiating. Sometimes this ends up meaning that the unions back a candidate, if he wins he raises their salaries, which they then funnel back into his campaign in dues payments. Private sector unions have no such power.

re: #258 Dark_Falcon

Perhaps that argument might have held water back in the heyday of American industry.

But starting a few decades ago, unions, say in this case autoworkers, started to buy significant number of shares of the company for which they worked. Thus, besides being workers they turned into (minority share) owners.

This was encouraged as a way forward for American industry and labor.

It does seem to have made labor unions more amenable to negotiating with the management, and made management for aware of the importance of collective ownership by their employees.

Now, other factors have also played into this - mostly the outsourcing of so much industry to other parts of the world.

Anyway, I for one don't see how being a voter is simultaneously a disqualifies unions from having collective bargaining.

So you have a problem with public unions endorsing and funding candidates - their managers, in effect.

Do you have a similar problem with private employees owning stock in their companies?

Do you have a similar problem with corporations donating to politicians or funding lobbying efforts in return for tax breaks or other considerations?

Because I know you've actively supported the second of those.

You know, you aren't ever going to get a position with the SF Tourism Board if the teaching thing doesn't work out.

Every time I come across a news article on female genital mutilation, the comment thread will be filled with people saying "the West" has no right to condemn it as long as male circumcision is legal here, and that the condemnation is therefore rooted in racism.

Yeah, as if the procedures are even remotely similar. *sigh*

Legalizing Prostitution so long as people followed certain guidelines and making it so they no longer needed pimps for protection might help... its worth a try in my book, but a lot of things are worth a try in my book...

I agree it should be legalized, along with pot and online gambling. But I don't understand how this is a Harry Reid issue, even if he opposes it (for religious or economic reasons). It may actually take a little guts to make such a statement in NV, although it should be noted he didn't mention this during the campaign AFAIK.

Outside of Nevada (and maybe even there) what members of Congress disagree with Reid on this?

Indeed, the entire concept of "citizenship" in our democratic society is that we are all "owners" of our nation and thus we all have a vested interest in its well-being.

Teachers for public schools have a vested interest not only in their own salary and retirement accounts but in the well-being of the state/county/city for which they work.

One can be both an employee and an owner at the same time.

At the heart of the argument that is playing out in these issues is how the collective, aka "the government", directs the economic activity of our society through the redistribution of wealth.

At this point I'm really looking for leadership to step up to the plate and defend the idea that our social institutions, such as public schools, bind our society together, and that if we turn our back on what our parents and grandparents have built (since the civil war) in creating a modern society by working together then the very real risk is that our society becomes increasingly fragmented and eventually becomes unstable.

From a health perspective, circumcision is better. No question. From aesthetics, hard to say.

I once knew a guy who had a circumcision in his early 20s for medical reasons. (Being a man of a certain age, he and his girlfriend decided to get back into the swing of things a little early, and he blew the end off his penis, but that's another story.) After his recovery, during a late night drinking session with all the guys around, we naturally asked him, out of our own curiosity, 'mate, you've had both - is it any different?'

He said, no, it wasn't really different, but his hand doesn't slip off the end as much any more.

That is true. Your positions are consistent. Unfortunately, we are questioning the reasoning behind those positions. And that reasoning is, unfortunately, all too often something poorly thought out or based on misinformation. And despite being a generally nice guy, you get stuck in these poorly reasoned positions because your consistent positions are always 'whatever the Republicans say is right because they're my guys, and anyone on the side of Democrats is wrong because they're not'. Which is fine for a sports team, but irrational when dealing with real live people and serious consequences.

If there an acute or even medical reason for it then that's expected. Sometimes that will be the case. Anyway. We wouldn't be having this conversation in Spain, Argentina, Italy and most all of Europe. The following countries have a circumcision rate of less than 20 percent:

Iceland, United Kingdom, Ireland, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Portugal, Spain, France, Switzerland, Italy, Netherlands, Belgium, Slovakia, Germany, Poland, Czech Republic, Hungary, Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, Moldova, Ukraine, Austria, Belarus, Cyprus, Georgia.

In the end I can only conclude that it really doesn't make a difference to be cut or un-cut except under extraordinary circumstances.

re: #258 Dark_Falcon

By this logic any corporation that does business with, sells good or services to, or is regulated by the government should not be able to influence elections with money. Your company wants to sell conference seats to the Pentagon and to lobby the elected and appointed officials who set defense policy. The Koch brothers want no bid contracts / sales on Wisconsin state own energy assets, and Walker wants to give it to them. Citizen's United was supposed to cut both ways, but now you want to hamstring the side that disagrees with you politically while making some bullshit distinction about their ability to influence who owns the company.

Saying that public employee unions should have less of a say in who manages them than the private companies who curry favor and seek to profit from that management means that you see corporations as being more worthy of personhood than actual persons.

Um, DF, you need to check this out some.

In at least some states, I can't speak for all of them, but in some states, public employees cannot participate in politics to the degree that they actively support a particular candidate or political party. They can support or oppose issues, but they can do nothing, directly or indirectly, in support of any particular candidate or party, including belonging to a union that supports a particular candidate or political party. And the reason this is prohibited is to avoid the type of scenario you've just described, either as you've described it OR in reverse (a candidate who was opposed reducing salaries and benefits for spite).

Clarifying - public employees can, of course, VOTE, but in many states they cannot SHOW support or opposition to a candidate or political party through donations, volunteering, speaking in favor of or opposition to a specific candidate or party, etc.

re: #179 ProLifeLiberal

I know he is a very effective politician, but he doesn't seem to be a nice guy. I would vote for him, but not actually want to meet him, if that makes any sense. There are some politicians out there who are decent people.

What is all this nice guy crap? Just because someone doesn't come off as your idea of of nice does not mean he isn't a decent person.

I think he is decent. So there!

What are Reformed Jews... Christians?

As I was told by my Conservative Jewish friend:

The Ultra-Orthodox Jew says, "Happy Hanukkah"
The Orthodox Jew says, "Happy Hanukkah"
The Conservative Jew says, "Happy Hanukkah"
The Reform Jew says, "Happy Hanukkah"
The Ultra-Reform Jew says, "Merry Christmas"

re: #362 reine.de.tout

The problem is one of overlap.

Unions have done much good. They have also done much not so good.

There have been great union leaders and there have been union leaders that have ripped their unions off to the tune of millions. The mob wasn't attracted to unions and union leaders because of their integrity.

Unions have supported great candidates and they have supported corrupt thieves.

Like corporations and banks, there is very little that is black and white, no matter how much one side or the other wants us to believe just that.

Unions, corporations and banks are complicated subjects and there seems to be little interest in having a real and productive conversation.

Politics.

The kind of Jews you see in sitcoms... Jerry Seinfeld would be our avatar.

Ummm...
I don't know about callouses, but it does decrease infections and general ick.

That should be for the men to decide when they're adults.

re: #258 Dark_Falcon

Yes, i did. To briefly recap, the answer is that say, an auto-workers union can organize and even strike for better pay and working conditions, but they cannot decide who owns the company they work for. By contrast, a public sector union can directly try to put into office the people with whom it would be negotiating.

But this isn't true, Dark. The workers can indeed decide who owns the company they work for, and are often, themselves, part-owners. They can buy stock. They can, in fact, eventually gain more influence in ownership than they ever could gain votes in an election.

Please try to come up with another reason, since this one doesn't fly.

liberals trying to control men's bodies again...and they might outlaw circumcision in San Fransisco...these people will stop at nothing

This must be the most hilarious case of unintended irony I've seen this year. Try thinking before you post, albusteve.
