I noticed that line yesterday and posted it here.. it's a great response to the idea that since states are doing poorly unions shouldn't get what the contracts they agreed to say they should...

That's the scary part of the numbers here in California. The fixed benefit and "spiked" benefit pensions are hugely expensive. Only good market investing conditions could support them. Then we had the epic huge reversal. No one (no Dem, no Repub, no Gov.) ever contemplated having to pay them without the benefit of a good market for investing. Now look out. And Jerry Brown is not going to pull anything like Wis. He may get a Federal bailout, he may get after bankruptcy if it's possible. In which case every one gets the screw job, not just certain unions.

That is doubtlessly a sad thing and it shows poor planning on the state's side, but trying to blame the unions for such a situation is silly, don't you agree?

Obama statement on Lybia in about 11 minutes.
I wonder if he's going to tell the car and slurpee story again.

Jim Hoft just launched an especially flaccid attack on me, with a link to the stalker site, where they're apparently ranting and raving because I banned NJDHockeyfan yesterday.
Idiots.
Unfortunately for the moron squad, NJD emailed and apologized for that comment, and I restored his account.
Fail. Again.

I certainly blame both sides at the negotiating table of the time. Legislative oversight of Calpers was lacking. I suspect union contributions to legislators distorted the negotiations just like energy contributions can get them overly sweet deals. But lots of blame to go around. Some folks yelled about it from time to time but nothing changed.

Hey! We had a conversation, worked things out, and settled the matter! No need for a decade-long feud! What a novel concept!!
Glad to hear NJDHockeyfan is back.

NJD was banned? I didn't even know.
Well, glad he's back.
(NJD isn't sufficiently perpetually enraged to be a stalker anyway. The guy goes from rancorous politics to tomato gardening in 3 seconds flat.)

Tomato gardening? Downright insidious!

Definitely not stalker material, then. They freak out over a little bit of kale.
;)

Don't know if you saw the links from a few threads down. States with union representation and/or collective bargaining rights for public employees are not more likely to have larger deficits or greater unfunded liabilities. Blaming the situation on unions doesn't hold up.

Right. Texas is a right to work state and has a HUGE budget deficit. They can't use public employee unions as scapegoats, so instead they are cutting prenatal care for the poor, mandating ultrasounds to stop abortions, and allowing guns on college campuses.
