Arizona’s Pima County Wants to Secede (from Arizona)

Tired of hoping for rationality from the state legislature
US News • Views: 31,934

A political committee has been formed in Arizona’s Pima County, to advocate secession.

From Arizona, because they’re sick of the far right loons who’ve taken over Arizona’s politics.

Co-chair Paul Eckerstrom said it’s not a joke and not a political statement. He said the state legislature has gone too far to the right, particularly with a round of measures to challenge federal supremacy.

“This really does border on them saying they don’t want to be part of the Union any longer,” he said. “Well, I want to be part of the United States.”

He said at a minimum, it will send a message that Pima County doesn’t want to go along with the priorities being outlined in Phoenix. He said Pima County has more land and more people than several other states.

“It’s no longer a laughing matter to me,” Eckerstrom said. “My kids’ futures are at stake because if this continues, the economic ramifications could be very dire. I’m tired of hoping and praying that rationality will come to Phoenix.”

Now a small group of right wingers can announce their intention to secede from Pima county. It’s like pointing two mirrors at each other.

That county has a long national border. And shares it’s western edge with California. Maybe they should be brought into California.

There was a time that the anglophone portion of Montreal threatened to secede from the province of Quebec if Quebec succeeded from Canada.

I consider myself lucky that my folks, while conservative-leaning, are also generally pretty open-minded. Were war declared, I’m pretty sure that I could at least talk them into neutrality.

When you have (like in Arizona’s case) a State Senate president who has direct ties to white nationalist groups, and whose son is a personal friend of real-life neo-Nazis like JT Ready and recently-convicted murderer Shawna Forde, there might - just MIGHT be a legitimacy to Mr. Eckerstrom’s words.

Fox: Qaddafi has Been Tied to Rev. Jeremiah Wright

Gadhafi has been tied to Rev. Jeremiah Wright, Obama’s spiritual adviser for more than 23 years.

The Libyan dictator also has financed and strongly supported the Nation of Islam and its leader, Louis Farrakhan. Obama has ties to Farrakhan and his controversial group…

Jeremiah Wright, former pastor of Obama’s longtime Chicago church, went with Farrakhan to visit Gadhafi in 1984.

Yep. Responsible for the October Crisis. Kidnapped a couple of people, murdered one.

I never forgave Trudeau for the idiocy of invoking the War Measures Act and declaring martial law.

I understand frustration with an increasingly irrational state but I don’t think this is the answer. Can’t blame them for feeling frustrated as I said since Arizona seems to be battleground center for all this crazyness.

Yes, as I recall. Thewy

The political wing morphed into the Parti Quebecois, but that waswn’t enough for the die hards, so they formed the Bloc Quebecois.

Something like that.

I was and remain fascinated by Quebec and Quebec politics. We studied the October Crisis in school and that got me hooked.

In his motion for the 1983 bankruptcy case, he called the judge “a crooked, slimy Jew who has a history of lying and thieving common to members of his race.”[3] In another motion that year, Martin stated, “I am able to understand how the Holocaust took place, and with every passing day feel less and less sorry that it did.”[3] He went on to say that “Jew survivors are operating as a wolf pack to steal my property.”

Quantum-Obama exists in many states simultaneously.

This reminds me of Roger Zelazny’s “Creatures of Light and Darkness”. In addition to the Steel General’s ability to fight a duel against a similarly abvled opponent, enabling them to create multiple avatars of themselves in a single time stream. there was also the Agnostics Prayer, shriving a soon-to-be dead man:

“Insofar as I may be heard by anything, which may or may not care what I say, I ask, if it matters, that you be forgiven for anything you may have done or failed to do which requires forgiveness. Conversely, if not forgiveness but something else may be required to insure any possible benefit for which you may be eligible after the destruction of your body, I ask that this, whatever it may be, be granted or withheld, as the case may be, in such a manner as to insure your receiving said benefit. I ask this in my capacity as your elected intermediary between yourself and that which may not be yourself, but which may have an interest in the matter of your receiving as much as it is possible for you to receive of this thing, and which may in some way be influenced by this ceremony. Amen.”

Fucking brilliant!

The fact that right-wingers want to secede from the UNION, rather than the State of Arizona does not seem to matter to them.

Details, details…

97 dragonfire1981  Wed, Feb 23, 2011 8:15:21pm

With regards to Quebec there was a province wide referendum on secession in 1995. The NO side (in other words “No we do not want to secede”) won but it was very close.

NO - 50.58%
YES - 49.42%

The separatists in the legislature were so sure they were going to win they already had a bill ready to go to secede from Canada and form their own country.

Secession is not as big on the national radar now as it was then, but there is still a group of separatists working toward the goal of one day seceding from Canada.

I should also point out the reason for Quebec wanting to secede are very different from Arizona. Quebec sepratists feel that english speaking Canada is being pushed on them and Quebec and its French hertiage are not respected enough throughout the country.

re: #92 austin_blue

This reminds me of Roger Zelazny’s “Creatures of Light and Darkness”. In addition to the Steel General’s ability to fight a duel against a similarly abled opponent, enabling them to create multiple avatars of themselves in a single time stream, there was also the Agnostics Prayer, shriving a soon-to-be dead man:

Ack! PIMF!

Tennessee Bill Dubs Sharia Law ‘Treasonous,’ Would Punish Muslims With 15 Years In Jail

First, this amounts to outlawing Islam.

Sharia covers halal, daily prayer, and all parts of ritual life.

Secondly: “Introduced last Thursday, the bill claims that Shariah law “continues to plague the United States generally and Tennessee in particular”.”

First, this amounts to outlawing Islam.

Sharia covers halal, daily prayer, and all parts of ritual life.

Secondly: “Introduced last Thursday, the bill claims that Shariah law “continues to plague the United States generally and Tennessee in particular”.”

Um, HOW?

If only there were several examples from history that we could draw upon to get some idea what it might be like to live in a time and place where extreme political polarization was the norm, a generally poor economic outlook applied to the majority of people, and nationalist demagogues with the power of the press blamed all their nation’s problems (real or imagined) on people of a socially unpopular minority demographic. What if something like that had previously happened to disastrous effect in places like Serbia, or Rwanda, or Cambodia, or China, or Germany? I bet if that had been the case, we’d be pretty damned vigilant about such things and the vast majority of people would find the the notion reprehensible.

Seems like a reasonable guy. I think he’s from Northern Va. He talks about in your article about an imam in Falls Church that found that Y was having people infiltrate it to try to start violence. As a Northern Virginian, I’ve been fortunate to know a large amount of people of both the Jewish and Muslim religion in my life.

Not the janitor; one of the residents. No idea what you’d call that in English.) out monkeying with the hall lights and he confirmed that the “stupid, squeaky plastic hammers” used on Yom HaAtzmaut are called “tipesh” but he couldn’t explain what the meaning of the custom is. I’m guessing that its some sort of stupid pun off the similarity in names between the word for idiot and hammer and the fact that its cheap and fun and unlike fireworks, unlikely to injure anyone seriously or set anything on fire.

Now, how would I feel if Orange County decided they wanted to be their own state? Or Eastern California?

I suppose I’d say go for it, if they were that unhappy.

Needs congressional approval, though. Of both states, plus the US congress.

New States may be admitted by the Congress into this Union; but no new States shall be formed or erected within the Jurisdiction of any other State; nor any State be formed by the Junction of two or more States, or parts of States, without the Consent of the Legislatures of the States concerned as well as of the Congress.

Thanks for taking the time to find an answer!

BTW, “Av Bayit” sounds more or less like an American “super” (superintendent), but maybe not exactly the same… a super typically resides in the building and is hired by the real estate company (or owner’s association in the case of condos) to upkeep it, but he/she is not really viewed as a resident in the usual sense of the word.
