Amazon Prime Adds Free Unlimited Movie/TV Streaming

Deal o’ the week
Technology • Views: 42,069

I’ve written previously about Amazon Prime,External Image and what a sweet deal it is for regular Amazon customers. $79 a year gets you unlimited free 2-day delivery on anything with no minimum order, or next-day delivery for $3.99.

“No minimum order” means you can have anything at all shipped free of charge. For example, this week I bought a very good quality 2m 3D-Capable HDMI CableExternal Image for $3.99 — and that was the final price. (Down at the local Radio Shack, the cheapest equivalent cable is about ten times as expensive.)

And now Amazon has sweetened the Amazon PrimeExternal Image in addition to free 2-day shipping.

They have lots of good content already available, and they’re not all films you’ve already seen; there are quite a few recent films and TV shows. (Including the gross-out movie of the decade, The Human Centipede,External Image which I have not watched. Yet.)

The selection doesn’t even come close to Netflix, though, so if you already use Netflix, don’t close your account just yet. But it’s a great little extra tweak for the already great Amazon Prime.External Image

Full disclosure: We get a small commission from Amazon’s Associates program for everything you buy, if you follow one of our links to get there.

The Human Centipede looks a bit disturbing. Having read the review, I think I’ll leave that one off my must-watch list.

Requiem for a Dream is one of those movies that I’m sure if I want to see because of something called Heroin Rot. But at the same time I hear how it’s the crazy, outstanding movie. Human Centipede has me thinking of grabbing the shotgun and loading it with grenade shot. Just in case.

The local news here today was big news indeed, the arrest of terror suspect Khalid Ali-M Aldawsari.
Naturally this dominated the local news and they didn’t have time for much else. Still, there was another local event they should, and could, have covered, but that all local media have apparently chosen to ignore. There was an actual riot outside one of the local high schools today, with hundreds of students pouring into the streets fighting and blocking traffic.
At least 20 people were arrested, several injured, and some vehicles damaged. My mother was caught in it, since she had gone to a nearby post office to mail a letter. She was stuck there for half an hour while police cleared the little savages off the street. I confirmed her account with a couple of police officers I know and with a teacher at the school. I don’t have any idea what triggered this, neither do the cops just yet, but they do have a big mess of delinquents in custody.

Speaking of media and Amazon Prime - I just heard this interview and ordered the book through my Amazon Prime account:

[Link: www.npr.org…]

I can’t recommend this interview enough. A fascinating account of how discrimination was legally sanctioned by the Supreme Court, after the Civil Rights Act was passed, under the guise of states’ rights. In particular, I like the discussion (towards the end) of how “strict originalism” was the rationale for narrowing the scope of the 14th and 15th amendments so as to provide legal cover for discrimination. Some you folks are history buffs, but I learned a lot: for example that the Civil Rights Act of 1875 was overturned in 1883. Also, the Colfax Massacre - where 150 black men were murdered and no one was held accountable because the Supreme Court ruled that federal anti-discrimination laws did not apply to individuals (sound familiar, Rand Paul?)

Congress passed the Civil Rights Act of 1875, a groundbreaking federal law proposed by Republican Sen. Charles Sumner of Massachusetts, which guaranteed that everyone in the United States was “entitled to the full and equal enjoyment” of public accommodations and facilities regardless of race or skin color.

“What the radical Republicans wanted, led by Charles Sumner in the Senate and Thaddeus Stevens in the House, was probably the largest experiment in social engineering ever taken,” says constitutional scholar Lawrence Goldstone. “They wanted the federal government to take these four million newly freed slaves and integrate them fully into society virtually immediately.”

But that didn’t happen — and wouldn’t for decades — in part because of decisions handed down by the Supreme Court, which declared the Civil Rights Act of 1875 unconstitutional in 1883. The court also said Congress lacked the constitutional authority under the 14th Amendment to grant equal protections under the law to blacks, stating that only states and local governments could do that. It also passed a ruling stating that the Enforcement Act of 1871, which forbade meetings of Ku Klux Klan members, was unconstitutional.

In his book Inherently Unequal, Goldstone examines how the Supreme Court’s rulings in these cases suppressed the civil rights movement in the latter half of the 19th century and affected the treatment of blacks in Southern states for decades, ultimately resulting in their mass migration to cities in the North.

The court’s rulings opened up “a period of de jure racial discrimination that would last almost a century and was virtually as odious as slavery itself,” writes Goldstone. “[It] also threw open the door to a more codified approach to removing African-Americans first from the voting rolls and then from mainstream civil life.”

I wouldn’t mind winter all year round. I like warm, but I like cozy warm, not hot. In the winter up here, it’s sort of cozy warm in the house, never really hot, to large a house and two many drafts to ever get hot, and the two wood pellet stoves keeps a nice level of cozy warm here, with the help of a electric space heater or two and an electric blanket.

And in the summer, same thing, cozy warm up here in the mountains, never really hot. So, winter would be fine all year round.

The extremes up here are depressing. We get -40C in the winter and +35C in the summer. We seldom get anything in the comfort zone of ~20C without rain and/or severe wind.

High 80’s (f) is about it in the summer, maybe a few days over 100 (f), but mainly in the 70’s (f) in the summer, days, into the 50’s nights, and of course dry.

Mostly the teens and 20’s (f) in the winter, occasionally a below zero spell, it’s really not that extreme up here.

Now I’m at 8200 feet, go 30 minutes west from here and start hitting the 10,000 feet mark, then winter gets a bit uncomfortable, even summer is much cooler above 10,000 feet.

I like being outside without much clothes and I don’t like wearing shoes.

This past Christmas, I bought a Blue Ray DVD player, under 100 dollars, mainly for the network connection. Hard wired it from the wireless router, has the software built into it to stream Netflix.

I find the Netflix streaming to be so convenient that I intend to cancel my Direct TV service as soon as my contract is up.

Like I mentioned above, Zork has been released to the public domain, and the “Z” engine that runs the data file. I also have some other “rom” images of Infocom games, and a special engine (can’t remember the name of the engine right now) that runs them in a real Microsoft window (the “Z” engine only runs in s DOS window, real retro).

If you look around the intertubes, you will find both legal and pirated Infocom games that you can run on your PC. DOn’t know about Macs.

Ever since the iPhone App Store launch last month, we’ve been on the hunt for apps we can load on our fancy phones and not forget about immediately. Occasionally something pops up but, sure enough, we manage to forget about it in a matter of days. But here … this is different. Frotz we’ll keep around for a long time.

Some of you may be familiar with Frotz; it’s a Z-machine, used to read and, therefore, play interactive fiction. Yes, that’s “text adventures” for you old timers. Now that the app has made it to the iPhone, we can explore Zork’s Great Underground Empire from anywhere. The app is free, comes with a bunch of public-domain IF titles, and you can “specify other download repositories” if you’re more interested in nabbing some of those Infocom classics. Might we recommend Steve Meretzky’s classic Leather Goddesses of Phobos?

Venezuela: US fomenting violence in Libya

Maduro did not condemn or defend the violent crackdown on Libyans participating in the popular uprising against Gadhafi’s long rule.

But he questioned the veracity of media reports on the bloody uprising, which has crept closer to Gadhafi’s stronghold in Tripoli.

“They are creating conditions to justify an invasion of Libya,” Maduro said.

“Libya is going through difficult times, which should not be measured with information from imperial news agencies,” Maduro added, referring to Western media.

I miss phones that had actual steel bells in them. My grandmother had three really old bakelite telephones in her house that she’d had for ages. Aside from being aesthetically wonderful, they were heavy. They rang with authority. I remember the speaker in the handset as being remarkably hi-fi. I wish I knew what happened to her phones. I’m not sure if they’d still be usable these days (I know next to nothing about landline teleco technology), but I’m certain that they’re still at least capable of functioning. They were made before anyone had thought up the idea of engineered obsolescence.

I don’t know the difference between cheap cologne and expensive cologne. Extremely rarely, I’ll catch a whiff of something and think, “DAMN that smells good! I’d like to snort that aroma for an extended period.” Mostly, though, it’s offensive.

There’s one perfume in particular that I really hate, and I wish I knew what it was called so that I could declare a fatwah against it. I don’t really know how to describe it, except to say that it’s slightly floral, but overwhelmingly “powdery”. It gives the distinct impression of being suffocated by an invisible cloud of talcum powder.

Sometimes it’s not so much the fragrance but the volume. Men are typically the worst because they confuse aftershave with cologne and proceed to paint themselves with several quarts of the stuff. Maybe it’s that Axe stuff they’ve been pimping for the past few years. Cripes, I can’t stand their commercials.

Report: NATO may attack Libya if violence continues

NATO forces may attack forces loyal to Muammar Gaddafi if the Libyan air force continues to bomb anti-government protesters, the London-based al-Quds al-Arabi reported, citing a European official claiming the US had threatened to intervene in the violence.

The source said NATO and US warplanes stationed in Italy may be ordered to take down Libyan planes, and that electronic warfare against them may already have been implemented.

Yes, those phones still work. We have one from about 1975. Western Electric. Sound quality is great, but of course its a dial phone so when we need to ‘press 1 now” we use a different phone. We are complete and total Luddites and proud of it. (Well it works, why replace it?)

SEATTLE | Thu Feb 24, 2011 9:55pm EST

SEATTLE (Reuters) - A key suspect in the U.S. Army prosecution of soldiers accused of terrorizing unarmed Afghan civilians has agreed to plead guilty to murder charges next week and testify against his co-defendants, his lawyer said on Thursday.

Army Specialist Jeremy Morlock has signed documents stating his intention to plead guilty to three counts of premeditated murder and several other offenses when summoned March 3 for court-martial at Joint Base Lewis-McChord near Tacoma, Washington.

The deal with prosecutors, which is subject to the approval of a military judge, calls for Morlock, 22, from Wasilla, Alaska, to serve no more than 24 years in prison, as opposed to the life term he faced if convicted of all charges in a trial.

He agreed in return to testify if called as a witness against other Stryker Brigade soldiers charged in connection with what has become the most serious prosecution of alleged atrocities by U.S. military in Afghanistan since the war there began in late 2001.

That strikes me as reasonable. No ground troops, no ground strikes even, but if the Gadahfi tries to bomb his own people then blast the planes sent out of the sky. Sounds reasonable to me, and it might give a couple of our pilots a nice workout and a kill marker or two.

If that shitbag leaves Libya his purse might be a little bit lighter…

Britain Moves to Seize Gadhafi’s Billions

British authorities were moving Friday to seize billions of pounds the Libyan regime has deposited in London amid a warning that embattled leader Col. Moamar Gadhafi will not hesitate to use biological and chemical weapons as his 42-year rule appears to crumble.

The UK Treasury has reportedly set up a unit to trace Gadhafi’s finances in Britain, establishing that he has around £20 billion (US$32 billion) in liquid assets, The (London) Daily Telegraph reported. This includes billions in bank accounts, commercial property and a £10 million mansion in London.

“The first priority is to get British nationals out of Libya. But then we are ready to move in on Gadhafi’s assets, the work is underway. This is definitely on the radar at the highest levels,” a government source said.

Switzerland has already ordered an immediate freeze on any assets belonging to Gadhafi and his entourage.

History just may repeat itself.

From al-Jazeera:

…Mustafa Abdel Galil, who resigned three days ago from his post as the country’s justice minister, spoke to Al Jazeera at a meeting of tribal leaders and representatives of eastern Libya in the city of Al Baida.

“We want one country. There is no Islamic emirate or al-Qaeda anywhere. Our only aim is to liberate Libya from this regime and then people choose the government they want.” the former minister said.

He warned that Gaddafi has biological and chemical weapons, and will not hesitate to use them.

The United Nation’s Human Rights Council will decide whether it will send an international team to investigate the alleged violations of international human rights law in Libya at a meeting in Geneva on Friday.

Libyan revolutionaries used dating website to dodge Gaddafi’s secret police

LIBYA’S revolutionaries posed as star-struck lovers on a dating site to organize their revolt against Col. Moamar Ghadafi, ABC News reported Thursday.

Former business and opposition leader Omar Shibliy Mahmoudi said he used Muslim dating site Mawada to rally people together while staying out of the gaze of the Libyan secret police, which monitors Twitter and Facebook.

Mahmoudi - leader of the Ekhtalef, or “Difference,” movement - acted as if he was looking for a wife under the profile name “Where is Miriam?” and sent coded love letters to spur people to revolution.

Since men cannot talk to other men on the site, revolutionaries posed as women to make contact with Mahmoudi, taking on names such as “Sweet Butterfly,” “Opener of the Mountain,” “Girl of the Desert” and “Melody of Torture.”

Supporters would use phrases such as “May your day be full of Jasmine,” referring to the uprisings in the region which have been dubbed the “Jasmine Revolution.”

The coded conversations were used to gauge support for the cause and direct people to social networking site Yahoo Messenger for more detailed conversations. The revolutionaries would then use the messaging service and text messages to organize their activities further, avoiding scrutiny from authorities.

Communications would continue through text messages and Yahoo Messenger, to avoid authorities becoming suspicious.

Mahmoudi said he attracted 171,323 “admirers” to a number of profiles on the dating site before Libya’s internet crashed Saturday. He had aimed to attract 50,000 as a sufficient number to take to the streets in protest.

Heh.

Why do mosquitoes like you?

It’s because you’re so odoriferous!

Humans are the world’s smelliest animal, study shows

Pungent body odor from sweaty adult human skin is unique in the animal kingdom. Humans turn out to be particularly smelly because odors are released from nearly every part of the body while other species living on us are simultaneously emitting odors too.

Our powerful scent attracts at least two species of mosquitoes, according to a paper accepted for publication in the journal Trends in Parasitology. Understanding what it is about human odor that attracts these bugs could help prevent the spread of diseases such as malaria and yellow fever.

Lead author Renate Smallegange explained to Discovery News that “the microorganisms on our skin use the materials present on our skin and in our sweat for their own metabolism. The microorganisms convert non-volatile compounds into volatile compounds.”

Smallegange, a Wageningen University entomologist, and colleagues Niels Verhulst and Willem Takken, analyzed data on the chemical structure of human sweat. They conclude that “sweat-associated human volatiles are probably the primary determinant factor in the host preference of anthropophilic mosquitoes.” […]

So far, the “recipe” for synthetic human sweat appears to contain a complex blend of carbon dioxide, ammonia, lactic acid, and seven other carboxylic acids. Charlie Sheen: Ass Act

Calling into the Alex Jones Show radio program according to TMZ, Sheen called the executive producer of his hit TV show a “clown” and said his real name is “Chaim Levine” (Lorre was born Charles Michael Levine).

“I didn’t care about that vanity card, I went straight home and dispelled that, that was actually one of the few compliments that clown has paid me in frickin’ almost a decade,” Sheen says of the vanity card Lorre ran after the Feb. 14 episode of Men, saying he will be pissed if Sheen outlives him. “I embarrassed him in front of his children and the world by healing at a pace that this un-evolved mind cannot process. I’ve spent, I think, close to the last decade, I don’t know, effortlessly and magically converting your tin can into pure gold. And the gratitude I get is this charlatan chose not to do his job, which is to write.”

Question for someone well versed in the situation but what is the basis of Qaddafi’s beef with Al Queda? I know from my understanding he’s considered more “secular” like Hussein was.

He worked to court Western favor by disassociating himself from from Al Qaeda. Also, calling opponents he rounded up members of Al Qaeda was a way to try to deflect criticism of the arrests.

I’m not well versed, but IIUC, Ghadaffi calls his brand “Islamic socialism”, and its sort of a jumble of pan-Arab thinking, pan-African thinking, Berber glamour, and Marxist-inspired old-revered-revolutionaries-running-a-leaky-public-welfare-net.

From the end of the 90s on, he was making hostile noises about al-Qaeda, and offering to dismantle his own WMD fixings, and let the UN in, blah blah.

He may see them as threats to the oil bidness, he may see them as threats to his power. It’s also possible he just decided to trash them in the interests of looking better to the West. He did pretty well in the earlier part of the decade with that one.

Anyone know more?

Libya faces call for exclusion from UN rights council

GENEVA - Libya, a member of the UN Human Rights Council, faces calls to be excluded from the body on Friday as well as an international probe into its deadly crackdown on an anti-regime revolt.

In an extraordinary session called because of the violence in Libya, the 47 member council will debate a resolution recommending that the UN General Assembly, “in view of the gross and systematic violations of human rights by the Libyan authorities,” suspend Libya from the UN body, according to a draft seen by AFP.

It also plans to “urgently dispatch an independent, international commission of inquiry, … to investigate all alleged violations of international human rights law in Libya in connection with the on-going protests in the country.”

Human rights groups expressed optimism on the sidelines of the western-led negotiations that the text, which also condemns possible “crimes against humanity”, would be adopted.

What I expect: After their little meeting is over and do nothing they will get back to what they are best at, criticizing Israel.

Saudi Man Arrested In Texas On WMD Charge; Allegedly Had Bush’s Address

Aldawsari, investigators allege, bought “concentrated nitric and sulfuric acids” and tried to buy phenol — which “can … be used to make the explosive trinitrophenol, also known as T.N.P., or picric acid.”

“Legally authorized electronic surveillance,” Justice says, “revealed that Aldawsari used various e-mail accounts in researching explosives and targets, and often sent emails to himself as part of this process.”

Among the information allegedly in those messages: “Aldawsari sent himself an e-mail titled ‘Tyrant’s House,’ in which he listed the Dallas address for former President George W. Bush,” Justice says.

Fungus Knocks Out Malaria In Mosquitoes

What St. Leger’s genetically engineered fungus does is rid the mosquito of the parasite. “So the fungus acts like a little hypodermic syringe, and when it’s in the blood of the insect, the fungus then produces the anti-malarial protein, and within a couple of days it basically cures the mosquito of malaria,” he says.

If the mosquito isn’t carrying the malaria parasite, it can’t spread the disease. These findings appear in the latest issue of the journal Science.

St. Leger says it’s also possible to genetically engineer the fungus to kill the mosquito quickly. And he and his colleagues have done that.

You know, I’m really impressed with this. As always, I also wonder what we will learn from the long term effects.

Benghazi back in business

Pro-Gaddafi forces have long gone and while there is still no central authority the city is functioning and a semblance of normality is returning.
….
KASEM: We are doing actually well at the moment. People are trying to help each other, trying to, there are volunteers in many places like for example hospitals. Some traffic lights are not working so you see like kids age of 10 to15 or something like this you know trying to do the work for what the police do sometimes.

BARNEY PORTER: Are there any police at all in the city? Any type of security forces?

KASEM: Some yes, some who joined the people here. They are working, they are doing their best to provide security like to their best. Actually in Benghazi most of like banks and shops, nothing happened to them, not destroyed.

BARNEY PORTER: Are the shops open? Is business going on as usual?

KASEM: Yeah, yeah. Most of the shops like let’s say 85 or 90 per cent of the shops are open. Banks are open as well.

This was a good sign:

“If the revolution doesn’t succeed, we will be hanged. We will be the first ones — the judges, the lawyers — because we are known,” Ahmad said. Kadafi “won’t go easily; he won’t go except by death or interference from another country.”

Ahmad said that his wife delivered their second daughter Feb. 15. He wants to name her “Free Libya,” a name his wife does not approve of.

He pointed to a lawyer picking up trash along the street, “This is the first time the people feel this is their country.”

Taking a close look at the map, I notice that there are 3 cities in the general area of Tripoli where the situation is unclear as to who controls it.

Zlitan
Al-Aziziyah
Az Zawiyah

Only three cities remain in definite control of Gaddafi

Tripoli
Surt
Sabha

In addition, it seems that the Mercenaries are flowing out of both Tripoli and Sabah, but not Surt. It would seem that those two would fall last, and Sabah is remote, meaning it may be a last stand location.

Well of course they do. Right now every country including the US wants them thrown off that UN counsel right now. Last year the US looked the other way when they were given the seat.

The assembly gave 155 of 188 ballots to a country where speaking your mind can be a capital offense, while also electing other tyrannies - Angola, Qatar, Mauritania and Malaysia - by even larger margins.

U.S. Ambassador Susan Rice lamely sighed that the Human Rights Council “remains flawed,” and she declined to say whether she had voted against Libya.

A couple of stories from Benghazi:

Gheriani pitches in at the courthouse, along with oil engineers and businessmen, many of them returned expatriates. Several floors above them, three of Gaddafi’s ill-fated mercenaries are locked up in what used to be a holding cell. Hollow-eyed and horrified, their futures seem bleak. “They are kept here for their own safety,” said Gheriani. “If we let them go the people would kill them,” he said, pointing at the milling crowd in the street below.
….
On Libyan television the father of a defecting air force pilot wept with pride as he explained the exploits of his son, who had been sent to bomb three oilfields near Benghazi. The father’s account confirms those reported by workers at the Bregga oilfield of two men parachuting to earth and a jet fighter crashing nearby.

“My son was ordered to take off by a man with a gun pointing at his back. He said no and pulled the lever to eject them both. He is a hero. Even if he died I would still be proud. He refused to kill the people.”

Another good reason to get off oil as much as possible.

Did the UK, Switzerland or Norway speak against Libya?

Dunno.

Maybe Canada did. They’re good about stuff like that, for all the good it does.

Their none inclusion into the UNHCR would only lead to their further disempowerment which in the end would only lead to further human rights violations by the member nation. So much for hoping the UN would be successful tomorrow:

Split UN rights council may scupper Libya inquiry

GENEVA, Feb 23 (Reuters) - The U.N. Human Rights Council will hold an urgent session on Libya this Friday at the request of Western and Latin American nations, who are pushing for an international investigation into the killings of protesters.

But with a majority of Asian and African nations — backed by Russia, China and Cuba — declining to support a draft resolution, diplomats said it was likely to be heavily watered down and perhaps not passed at all at the emergency meeting.

The UN never misses a chance to fail.

Took one of the boys to a family art night. We were supposed to make little clay Hopi “storytellers,” which are mostly mother-type sculptures with little babies.

Well, I didn’t want to make a mother sculpture, and neither did my son, but in the book they showed a few other options. I chose to make an owl with a couple of owlets, and he decided on a cactus.

The cactus had to have an open mouth (that’s why they’re story tellers). He got that far. Then he added a few other options. Then a few more. I looked over.

“So…it’s a demon cactus now?”

“Yeah. That’s its baby. It doesn’t care about the baby. And it’s just a demon now.”

I thought the teacher would look at us funny, but she thought it was adorable and took a picture.

Maybe the art world just gets twisted senses of humor.

Meanwhile Israel responds to attacks from Jimmy Carter’s friends…

IAF strikes Hamas targets in Gaza; 1 dead, 3 injured

“I do not suggest that anyone test the State of Israel’s resolve,” Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu warned Hamas on Thursday, a day after two Grad-model Katyusha rockets slammed into Beersheba for the first time since Operation Cast Lead over two years ago.

On Thursday night, the Israel Air Force struck Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip. Palestinian news reports said the attack had been against a car and that one person was killed and three wounded. The IDF said the targets were linked to Hamas and had been involved in terrorist activity.

Shortly after the rockets smashed into Beersheba on Wednesday night, the IAF bombed targets throughout the Gaza Strip, including launchers the Islamic Jihad had used to fire the rockets. Three members of the rocket- firing cell were wounded.

Later that night, the IAF again bombed a number of Hamas targets, causing extensive damage. The targets included tunnels, weapons factories and military outposts.

Netanyahu said he had instructed military forces to respond to the rocket attack on Beersheba immediately, forcefully and without hesitation.

“We are determined to defend our citizens and we will not tolerate the shelling of our cities and our civilians,” he said Thursday during a press conference with visiting Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk. “No country would agree to this. Israel, too, does not accept this and will act accordingly to defend its citizens.”

Just found out about this thing called the Darwin Awards. Only go to it if you like black humour! Some of it’s not funny, but some people are just so fkn stupid you have to laugh. Here’s my favourite:
Living on Zionist Time

In most parts of the world, the switch away from Daylight Saving Time proceeds smoothly. But the time change raised havoc with Palestinian terrorists this year.

Israel insisted on a premature switch from Daylight Savings Time to Standard Time to accommodate a week of pre-sunrise prayers. Palestinians refused to live on “Zionist Time.” Two weeks of scheduling havoc ensued. Nobody knew the “correct” time.

At precisely 5:30pm on Sunday, two coordinated car bombs exploded in different cities, killing three terrorists who were transporting the bombs. It was initially believed that the devices had been detonated prematurely by klutzy amateurs. A closer look revealed the truth behind the explosions.

The bombs had been prepared in a Palestine-controlled area, and set to detonate on Daylight Saving Time. But the confused drivers had already switched to Standard Time. When they picked up the bombs, they neglected to ask whose watch was used to set the timing mechanism. As a result, the cars were still en-route when the explosives detonated, delivering the terrorists to their untimely demises.

Libya: Col Gaddafi’s son ‘in hiding on Venezuelan island’

Orlando Fernandez Medina said sources within the Venezuelan government had told him that one of Col. Gaddafi’s sons arrived on the island of Margarita around two days ago.

The claim, if shown to be true, could explain why William Hague, the Foreign Secretary, said on Monday that he had reason to believe Col. Gaddafi himself was heading to Venezuela as protests against his regime threatened to topple him from power.

“The caller to the Venezuelan Foreign Ministry was Gaddafi’s son and not Gaddafi,” said Mr Medina, a former governor of the state of Lara in northwestern Venezuela.

Libyan Rebels Repel Qaddafi’s Forces Near Tripoli

Rebels seeking to overturn the 40-year rule of Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi repelled a concerted assault by his forces on Thursday on cities close to the capital, removing any doubt that Libya’s patchwork of protests had evolved into an increasingly well-armed revolutionary movement.

The series of determined stands by rebel forces on Thursday — especially in the strategic city of Zawiyah, near important oil resources and 30 miles from the capital, Tripoli — presented the gravest threat yet to the Libyan leader. In Zawiyah, more than 100 people were killed as Colonel Qaddafi’s forces turned automatic weapons on a mosque filled with protesters, a witness said. Still, residents rallied afterward.

My suggestion is use something to scoop the water out. This part will be tedious. When it gets low enough, scoop the clothes out, take them to the bathtub and wring them out.

You can then hang them dry, and when the washer is working again, wash them. If you leave it, you’ll have mold.

Just what I would do.

(Of course, I don’t get this problem. I get a helpful child adding detergent to the dryer. Have you ever tried to get the detergent out of the dryer. You have to get every last speck, or it will dry all over your wet clothes, and you’ll itch.)

What I’ll do tomorrow, is wring out the clothes and take them to the neighbor’s house for a rinse cycle. She wasn’t home today, so it will just have to wait ‘til tomorrow. My dryer works, so that’ll be OK. And I can hold out for a week without doing laundry. Not easily, but it can be done.

As to the kid adding detergent - whoa. I get it.

I once told my father-in-law that if he wanted to wash his hats, he should put them in the dishwasher instead of the washing machine.

So I come back into the house an hour or so later, and he’s standing at the dishwasher with a mop, water and suds are EVERYWHERE, he’s run the dishwasher like 5 times and it’s still putting out excess suds - turns out he used laundry detergent in the dishwasher. I really didn’t think I had to specify that he should use dishwasher detergent in the dishwasher, but apparently I should have.

Libyan: Qaddafi forces shoot hospital patients

A resident of the increasingly violent Libyan capital of Tripoli told CBS Radio News Thursday that armed supporters of Muammar Qaddafi, the country’s longtime leader, have stormed into hospitals to shoot wounded demonstrators and take dead bodies to an unknown location.

“They go in with guns into hospitals,” said the resident, identified only as Adel to protect his safety. “They take the bodies that are dead. In some hospitals, they have shot the wounded. This is true. I know it’s very strange for the States, but this is happening today in Tripoli.”

Because the situation in Libya is growing more dangerous day by day and reporting from the country is difficult for Western journalists, the statements Adel made to CBS Radio News could not be independently verified.

In one example of the violence in Libya, Adel said he saw 62 protesters killed and about 100 more wounded in Tripoli’s Green Square Tuesday.

“They’re putting the bodies on half pickup trucks, and they’re taking them somewhere we don’t know yet because they don’t want these bodies to go into hospitals,” Adel said.

That’s not the only action being taken to cover up what is happening in the capital, Adel said. Armed pro-government supporters Thursday were forcing people to help clean up parts of downtown Tripoli and paint buildings.

“There are some streets where he’s using the people in the houses; if they don’t go out, he will shoot them with gunpoint to do that,” Adel said.

Horrifying to say the least.

His name is Binyamin, but he spent a number of years in the States growing up—that’s where he gets that American accent in English from—and he used ‘Benjamin’ there, and still does when he’s abroad in the English-speaking world.

If you get really desperate—laundromat.

Have you tried to find a laundromat lately?

There isn’t one, at least where I am. That was my first thought today, but I couldn’t locate one near enough to make it worth my while traveling to it rather than waiting for my neighbor to get home. May end up at daughter’s dorm laundry room, if nothing else. I figure letting those clothes soak in soapy water all night will get them good and clean.

Kindle is calling, just wanted to stop by and say hello, and I hope you all have a great evening and that you do NOT have a week like the one I just had!

The UK and the Swiss are in the process of cutting off Mo’s bank accounts. He has lots of money in the US too. Will we freeze that money as well?

Libya has billions in US banks: cable

Libya holds billions of dollars in US bank accounts, according to a confidential US diplomatic cable, which casts light on the global span of the country’s oil wealth.

According to a 2010 message from the US embassy in Tripoli, obtained by WikiLeaks, Libya’s sovereign wealth fund holds $32 billion in cash and “several American banks are each managing $300-500 million.”

The revelations were made by the fund’s boss Mohamed Layas who said most of the $32 billion was “in bank deposits that will give us good long-term returns.”

As international anger grows over Moamer Kadhafi’s brutal crackdown on protesters, some of those assets abroad could be transformed into targets for international sanctions, if tied to the regime.

While US officials have not specified what steps could be taken against Libya, Washington has recently frozen assets held by Iranian, Zimbabwean and Belorussian officials over rights abuses.

“We have a wide range of tools,” said State Department spokesman Philip Crowley Thursday, noting financial sanctions were one option.

Another movie available for free through Amazon Prime that I highly recommend:

Let the Right One In.

A lot of vampire movies really suck, but this one was an interesting take on the subject, technically very well done from all angles. Watch the subtitled one, the dubbed version loses a lot of the atmosphere.

And at some point it even becomes “Let the sunshibe in!”. Oops, spoiler.

I was a big time Infocom geek… never solved any of the games, but had a great time trying. I have a number of the rom images and the “Z” engine on my computer, that enable me to play the old games.

The Zork series has been released in public domain and you can get the downloads for the PC legally.

The Zork Trilogy, Zork Zero, Beyond Zork, Infidel, Wishbringer, Hollywood Hijinx, Planetfall, Stationfall, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, A Mind Forever Voyaging, Bureaucracy, The Lurking Horror, Nord and Bert Couldn’t Make Head or Tail of It…

…but my favorite was probably Trinity:

As the game begins, the player’s character is spending a final day of a London vacation in the Kensington Gardens. The evening flight back to the United States is looking increasingly unlikely for a number of unusual reasons. Hordes of nannies are blocking all exits from the Gardens, and the grass actively resists efforts to be walked upon. Worst of all, a gleam on the horizon soon heralds the unwelcome arrival of a Soviet nuclear missile. Time begins to slow as the missile approaches, and with some ingenuity the player’s character finds an incongruous door hovering in mid-air. There’s no telling where it may lead, but it can’t possibly be worse than the alternative of being at ground zero of a nuclear detonation…
