Georgia GOP Rep. Paul Broun Backpedals Furiously

What violent right wing rhetoric?
Wingnuts • Views: 42,537

Last Tuesday in a town hall meeting, Georgia GOP Rep. Paul Broun failed to condemn an audience member who asked, “Who will shoot Obama?”

According to Blake Aued of OnlineAthens, the question got a “big laugh” from the audience.

At Rep. Paul Broun’s town hall meeting on Tuesday, the Athens congressman asked who had driven the farthest to be there and let the winner ask the first question.

We couldn’t hear the question in the back of the packed Oglethorpe County Commission chamber, but whatever it was, it got a big laugh. According to an outraged commenter on the article, the question was, when is someone going to shoot Obama?

This was Broun’s reply:

The thing is, I know there’s a lot of frustration with this president. We’re going to have an election next year. Hopefully, we’ll elect somebody that’s going to be a conservative, limited-government president that will take a smaller, who will sign a bill to repeal and replace Obamacare.

Greg Sargent reports that the Secret Service has investigated the incident, and concluded that the questioner was an elderly person who regrets making a bad joke. They now consider the case closed.

But what’s Broun’s excuse for his weasel-word answer? Again and again we see Republican politicians doing this; they’re terrified of losing their base of rabid Tea Party nuts, so they say nothing in response to the most outrageous and violent rhetoric. Just a smile and a nod, and a mouthful of non sequiturs.

Sargent’s latest update: Broun seems to realize he made a big mistake.

Tuesday night at a town hall meeting in Oglethorpe County, Georgia an elderly man asked the abhorrent question, “Who’s going to shoot Obama?” I was stunned by the question and chose not to dignify it with a response; therefore, at that moment I moved on to the next person with a question. After the event, my office took action with the appropriate authorities.

I deeply regret that this incident happened at all. Furthermore, I condemn all statements — made in sincerity or jest — that threaten or suggest the use of violence against the President of the United States or any other public official. Such rhetoric cannot and will not be tolerated.

But if this kind of rhetoric is so intolerable to Broun, why did it take him three days to denounce it — and only after it became national news?

UPDATE at 2/25/11 11:02:30 am

By the way, Rep. Broun also panders to Birthers, like nearly every GOP politician.

Broun has appeared before in these pages:
And Now, Black Helicopter Republicans (11-10-08)

“That’s exactly what Hitler did in Nazi Germany and it’s exactly what the Soviet Union did,” Broun said. “When he’s proposing to have a national security force that’s answering to him, that is as strong as the U.S. military, he’s showing me signs of being Marxist.” ...

“We can’t be lulled into complacency,” Broun said. “You have to remember that Adolf Hitler was elected in a democratic Germany. I’m not comparing him to Adolf Hitler. What I’m saying is there is the potential.”

This was a week after the election, in the early stages of this site's break with the right. It was a significant indicator that the bat guano element was taking over the GOP completely.

"I know there's a lot of frustration with this president" is a good response to "I feel as though the country is going down the wrong path, and the economy is so bad."

It is a less-good response to "So, who's going to shoot the president?"

I'm honestly not sure who worries/bothers me more, the politicians and talking heads that endorse or ignore this kind of rhetoric or the people out there that actually want to see Obama (Or anyone else) shot.

re: #10 Dreggas

according to TPM he chuckled too.

Well, to be honest, when speaking in front of a crowd, it's a difficult, jarring thing to switch from a convivial speech to suddenly hectoring and lecturing them. Yes, it would have been a bold and brave thing to do, and the right thing. But imagine the situation - you're making a speech, people are nodding their heads, they're agreeing, you're agreeing, someone says something inappropriate, the crowd laughs - I think more of us would sort of chuckle and try to defuse the situation in a non-threatening manner, rather than suddenly switching to a bully pulpit, than we might admit. And it's not really surprising that he didn't immediately go fuming to a press release about how some idiot in the crowd had said something nasty.

I don't think his reaction to this particular situation is entirely unreasonable. It's not like Mike Hogan, who decided to make that sort of joke all by himself. Paul Broun doesn't get a pass from me, though - that little Marxist/Nazi comparison demonstrates pretty clearly that he is a cultie nutjob, much like his supporters.

It may be weak, but to be honest, I'm a little glad and also a little surprised that he actually felt the need to backpedal at all. That's almost a refreshing change these days. Typically nowadays the reaction of wingnuts when they get called out on ridiculous, hateful rhetoric is to a) make a tu quoque, b) double down and insist that they're actually right), or c) both. Such as Scott 'Yes, it's totally normal and right that I should be talking to a corrupt robber baron like I'm a middle manager reporting to my boss' Walker, to quote a recent example. Maybe I'm too grateful for small mercies.

This lasted up until these liberals realized that these Iraq War supporting right wingers were the same bigots they were before the war. I really can totally see that, OTOH, I don't think it's unreasonable to think that a person of such eminent position and experience speaking should be able to say 'Sir, please don't even joke about that. We've lost presidents to assassination before, and no one wants to see that happen again. Next question?"

In the lead up to the Iraq War I was at Uni. We had three debate sessions with pro and anti-war people.

I got the lucky job of moderating it. Fun times.

Some guy yelled out that President Bush and the entire admin should be shot.

There were a few cheers, some boos and lot of wtf silence. I stopped the session and made a comment about understanding the frustration but that this type of speech wasn't acceptable point of discussion and nothing to joke about. The guy tried to justify it.

I had him thrown out.

UN Human Rights council votes unanimously against Libya

The 47-member council unanimously decided to recommend to the UN General Assembly in New York to review Libya's membership, with a view towards getting the country suspended.

The resolution slammed Libya for committing 'gross and systemic human rights violations' and called for a special international inquiry team to be sent to investigate.

China, Russia, the United States and several Arab and European nations are among the council members.

'Widespread and systematic attacks against the civilian population may amount to crimes against humanity,' said Navi Pillay, the UN high commissioner for human rights.

In a move Western diplomats said was 'bold and brave,' the entire Libyan mission to the UN in Geneva resigned their post as official envoys of Tripoli in the middle of a special session of the Human Rights Council.

Yet conservatives may be shocked to learn that their idol Reagan was once a union boss himself. Reagan was the only president in American history to have belonged to a union, the AFL-CIO affiliated Screen Actors Guild. And he even served six terms as president of the organized labor group. Additionally, Reagan was a staunch advocate for the collective bargaining rights of one of the world’s most famous and most influential trade unions, Poland’s Solidarity movement.

Fresh from the Wonk Room:

Koch-Powered Tea Party Pushes Climate Denial Bill In New Hampshire

Fueled by the carbon pollution giant Koch Industries, Tea Party Republicans in New Hampshire are attempting to scuttle the state’s involvement in the region’s successful climate program. Robocalls from Koch’s Americans for Prosperity group flooded the state over the weekend in support of a bill that would repeal participation in the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative, which has cut greenhouse and other pollution and created 1,130 jobs as a result of energy efficiency benefits. Rep. Sandra Keans (D-Rochester), told the Nashua Telegraph that AFP’s calls were “sleazy” and deliberately false. “I have never seen such a cowardly perpetration pulled on the citizens of New Hampshire,” Keans said.

...

Deputy Majority Leader Shawn Jasper (R-Hudson) explained his vote: “Neither man nor cow is responsible for global warming.”

Rep. James Garrity (R-Atkinson), chairman of the House’s Science Technology and Energy Committee, claimed that RGGI relies on “shaky climate science.”

Rep. Frank Holden (R-Lyndeboro), vice chairman of the House’s Science, Technology and Energy Committee, wrote in the majority committee report that the “science of climate change is far from clear.”

Rep. Andrew Manuse (R-Derry): “The reasons used to promote RGGI were based in false, exaggerated and highly politicized science.”
