Pamela Geller and Robert Spencer’s SIOA Listed As Hate Group

Anti-Muslim bloggers make the annual hate group roundup
Wingnuts • Views: 59,616

Congratulations to Pamela “Shrieking Harpy” Geller and Robert “Poison Dwarf” Spencer; their “Stop the Islamization of America” is listed in the Southern Poverty Law Center’s annual survey of extremist organizations, under the heading of anti-Muslim hate groups.

Anti-Muslim hate groups are a relatively new phenomenon in the United States, most of them appearing in the aftermath of the World Trade Center terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. Earlier anti-Muslim groups tended to be religious in orientation and disputed Islam’s status as a respectable religion.

All anti-Muslim hate groups exhibit extreme hostility toward Muslims. The organizations portray those who worship Islam as fundamentally alien and attribute to its followers an inherent set of negative traits. Muslims are depicted as irrational, intolerant and violent, and their faith is frequently depicted as sanctioning pedophilia, marital rape and child marriage.

These groups also typically hold conspiratorial views regarding the inherent danger to America posed by its Muslim-American community. Muslims are depicted as a fifth column intent on undermining and eventually replacing American democracy and Western civilization with Islamic despotism. Anti-Muslim hate groups allege that Muslims are trying to subvert the rule of law by imposing on Americans their own Islamic legal system, Shariah law.

Anti-Muslim hate groups also broadly defame Islam, which they tend to treat as a monolithic and evil religion. These groups generally hold that Islam has no values in common with other cultures, is inferior to the West and is a violent political ideology rather than a religion.

Hate groups become enraged when they're listed as hate groups by the SPLC. Expect some major mental genuflecting by Geller, Spencer, and their fanboys. And as is typical with these moves by the SPLC the wingnuts will respond with the usual cliched bashing of the SPLC. Beck will connect the dots to Soros as he usually does.

The first thing you'll notice is the way they spell it: $PLC.

As though raising funds to accomplish the organizations mission is a compromise to the mission. To the contrary, they go well together when the KKK is forced to pay.

There were lots of efforts to turn them away from the path of hate and craziness, but in the end they became more tribal, closed, and hate filled than the caricatures they paint of Muslims.

EDL dismisses Jewish arm as too extreme

The leadership of the English Defence League has distanced itself from the group's Jewish Division, because of its partnership with the far-right American group Jewish Task Force.

The head of the EDL's Jewish division, Roberta Moore, previously announced that the group was working with the JTF, whose leader Victor Vancier has been imprisoned for terrorism offences.

This week the EDL's leadership issued a statement saying that if the Jewish Division continued relations with the JTF, they would sever ties with her.

Shalom Chaim,

1. Do you think it's possible that the Head n***** In Charge, Barack Hussein Osama yimach shmo, may be a closet homosexual? I'm sure you recall that Larry Sinclair accused the long legged mack daddy of being involved with him in homosexual activity and illicit drug use. It's entirely plausible that Osama may be a "down low brother" when you also consider the fact that black men have a propensity to be discreetly involved in homosexual activity while also having relations with females. What do you think?

2. What is your opinion of Spike Lee? I recently watched his "critically acclaimed" film Do the Right Thing and for me to say that it was utter nonsense would be the understatement of the year. Is this individual a "brilliant" director or is he just another worthless racist black?

3. May you share with us a recent close encounter with the Turd World?

You're a gentleman and a scholar.

Kol tuv.

Re: Charles Johnson is an idiot!!!
I am so happy to see that Charles Johnson, of LGF fame, has finally gone off the rocker... Once the poster-boy of the Right wing and anti-Islam message he now has swapped his morality for the religion of the left, progressive liberalism.

I was banned from his LGF forum almost 4 years ago... After I was banned I took up against Charles, the self-righteous fool, and started the LGFSUCKS blog... I knew that this individual was not stable, he is a G-d in his own mind, a self-made legend. He railed against me because he thought I supported the concept he labeled as 'Creationism' because I said that Hashem was the creator of the heaven and the earth. Charles is a dim bulb who is only able to get followers who propagate the echo-chamber of dull progressive ideas.

I hope that Charles is quickly forgotten and when he is sick and dying he will possibly do repentence, but I doubt it...

Charles, I apologize for reposting, but I think this is a badge of honor.

re: #67 Gus 802

Here's a safe version from Wiki: Victor Vancier. He's the racist, homophobe, all around hater that posts at Liveleak.

Excerpt:

Victor Vancier (born December 25, 1956), commonly referred to by his Hebrew name, Chaim Ben Pesach (Hebrew: חיים בן פסח‎) is an American political activist and the founder and director[citation needed] of the United States-based Kahanist organization, Jewish Task Force (JTF) and the former National Chairman of the Jewish Defense League (JDL) in the United States. In 1987, he was convicted of doing a series of bombings in order to free Soviet Jews during his time with the JDL. He served over five years in federal prison for his involvement in 18 bombings in New York and Washington.

[...]

Jewish Task Force aired on public access television in the mid-1990s, in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens. Vancier, who had by that time been convicted on three separate occasions for his involvement in terrorist bombings, became notorious for his criticisms of black culture and views on homosexuality and was heavily criticized in local magazines and newspapers for his controversial opinions. In the context of state comptroller elections, in one instance, after lauding one candidate, Herbert London, as "a real Jewish man", he derided London's opponent, an African American, as "a low, Jew-hating, Jew-killing cockroach". He further described attorney general candidate Karen Burstein as a "disgusting, ugly lesbian". He continued,

The God of Israel will not tolerate homosexuality or lesbianism. It is an abomination onto the Lord... I have a cure for AIDS that doesn't cost one penny. Stop being fags!

After the election of Obama, the members of the JTF , including Mr. Vancier, have become more extreme in their views of Black and other cultures. There are continued requests on the "Ask JTF" webcast for "African Action Stories" and a general negative outlook toward Black, Arab and mainstream Jewish culture.

Vancier has referred to Nelson Mandela as a "Black Nazi", Yasser Arafat as the "Arab Hitler" and a "Muslim terrorist pedophile who died of AIDS". He has also targeted former First Lady and senator Hillary Clinton and former U.S. President George W. Bush on his website, calling Clinton "Hillary Sodom Arafat" and Bush "Jorge Wahabi Bush" whom he calls a "low, disgusting traitor" and "excrement". He also uses language such as "schvartze" when referring to African-Americans and "kike" for Jews he considers to be traitors. JTF's messages have been condemned for alleged racism by the Anti-Defamation League and the Simon Wiesenthal Center.

I recall "muman" from the LGF Lounge. He's a pretty screwed up guy. Had somebody living with him that he called "homeless". Re-found his religion after 9/11, and had a "holier than thou" attitude.

[Link: defenseman.wordpress.com...]

LGF 2.0 got its start from a commentor who was banned from Little Green Footballs named muman. The blog was originally, from what I can gather, named LGF Sucks. This changed in August 2008 after two other commentors were banned for their behavior, Rodan and Savage_Nation. The blog started as a rant against Charles Johnson of LGF by muman for preceived slights after Johnson exposed the idiotarianism of Intelligent Design, the Wedge Strategy, and its links to some very unsavory anti-science young-earth creationists. They have a habit of “nic-jacking” commentors from LGF, Johnson, Killgore Trout, and Sharmuta in particular. They also wrongly believe that Johnson is on an anti-Christian crusade. He is not, and has denied their claims several times.

Got me. For the time being it seems as though Vancier has settled on being a crazed internet phenom at Liveleak. Here's a little more on Vancier from an ADL document:

In November 1986, Victor Vancier,* the self-proclaimed leader of the JDL in New York, was arrested outside the Penta Hotel with a tear gas grenade after a fire broke out in the tunnels under the hotel where the Soviet Moiseyev Dance Company was performing. Vancier was charged with a Federal weapons violation. Vancier was later sentenced to a ten-year prison term for bombing attacks at the Soviet diplomatic residence in New York, as well as for attacks against Soviet cultural performances.

The problem with grunge is that word covers so much distance that it means nothing :P

I mean, mudhoney is a shouty punk band, they were considered "grunge"

Alice in Chains was a former glam/hair band that detuned to drop D and pounded on a way pedal, they're way more sabbath than anything, but they're considered "grunge"

Soundgarden was practically prog-metal in places with a drummer who seems to think in four dimensions, they're somehow grunge along with Nirvana, who play three chords in 4/4 for entire albums

And then there's the Melvins, which is what *I* would consider grunge, or what the word should mean, the experimental, crushingly heavy band that influenced everyone around them and sold no records, and is still around, still hailed as one of the most important bands in heavy music

However, we have recently - a couple of weeks ago - discovered that the EDL had already made an alliance with the JTF in 2010, resulting in them both attending a rally in Amsterdam in support of Geert Wilders. The following photos provide concrete proof that both attended the rally, that the EDL knew of the existence of the JTF at the rally, and that they were happy to pose in a group together. I would not insult the EDL by accusing them of doing this without proper research.

We in the Jewish Division would like to reiterate our whole-hearted, continuing support for Chaim ben Pesach and the JTF, and for the comment he made, reported by Jessica Elgot, at the close of her article:"There are elements in the EDL who desperately want to be accepted by the leftwing establishment and the media. These elements have no principles or courage. Roberta Moore and the Jewish Division represent courageous and noble elements. If the EDL is not willing to work with JTF, then they are rejecting all rightwing Jews, evangelical Christians and others who believe in the right of the Jewish people to the entire land of Israel."

Yeah. This gotten intense in a hurry. This a much more intense conflict than the one it Mexico (it seems). However, aside from continued fighting Misurata, Gaddafi is in trouble. He only controls Tripoli, Surt, Sabha, and the town of Ghadames, at the border of Tunisia and Algeria.

Wikipedia is treating this as a Civil War. There are currently 4 "battles" being listed:

Battle of Benghazi
Battle of Misurata
Battle of Az Zawiyah
Battle of Tripoli

It's 6:30 in Norman, and now seems to be a good to do a summary about Libya. As of the current Wikipedia, there are 811 dead in what could be described as a Civil War. Today was Day 10 of the Uprising. As of right now, there is a major battle at a base in Misurata. Also, it seems that preparations are underway for a battle in Tripoli.

Personally, I wouldn't call this a civil war. The way I see it, it is now a conflict between the people of Libya and a murderous madman with his goons.

I'm really worried about what is going to happen in Tripoli. As I've said before, a full-scale battle between loyalists and free Libyans would likely be a catastrophe and the possible loss of life could be staggering. Really, I'm holding out hope someone just puts a bullet into the back of the Colonel's head (Which is very weird for me to say, since I'm normally against any sort of killing or violence, but there doesn't seem to be any other good option here) and that his followers are more loyal to him than anything.

I see your point, but what's going on there now seems to be more than just a normal toppling of Government. To me, this seems to be a very rapid civil war between two factions in a nation. Certainly lower scale than some, but this is far more intense than what is going on in Mexico with their Drug War.

Anyone else struck by how fast this seems to be moving?

Once he started ordering the slaughter of his own people, he sealed his fate. In other times and places, I think those tactics might have worked to cow the populace into submission. However, with the spreading democracy movements in the Arab world and his own history of violent reprisals against groups he feels have wronged him, I think the people decided early on that there was no turning back. All the violence ended up doing was shocking people that may have previously supported (Or, at least, not opposed) him into turning again him.

I think this is part of the reason we seem to have seen other regimes in the region very quickly moving to give concessions. They want people off the street as soon as possible and they don't want to risk galvanizing them through violent actions. You can see in Bahrain where they backed off the suppression after that only resulted in larger, angrier crowds.

Oh, I'm not questioning the intensity. I think it is, if anything, closer to an armed rebellion or revolt or revolution (3Rs?), since, at least from what reporting we've been getting, the vast majority of the population, along with most of the regular military, is supporting the rebellion against a largely isolated leader and his personal forces (Which are apparently made up of, at least in part, irregular forces).

It's a bit of a nitpick of terminology, but I also think that a widespread popular uprising functions differently than a civil war, in that most civilians and military are on the same side, rather than a country truly divided against itself. Of course, what happens after the common enemy is gone is another worrisome question.

My friends have two shepherds who are noise-makers whenever someone rings the doorbell or otherwise stirs them up. And one of the other usually sleeps just inside the front door of their house (the other sleeps in the main bed room.)

And then one day when I was visiting I just came right in since I was expected and didn't want to cause a stir. Opened the front door and walked in carrying a few packages. Dog just inside the front door looked up at me, wagged his tail, and then got up and followed me the rest of the way in.

I probably got away with that since the dogs knew me as friendly and had picked up my scent cleanly coming in. But I still put a little seed of doubt in his head.

Shepherds are good at threat assessment. If they knew you, they probably realized you were allowed to come in.

If you'd tried to hurt anyone inside, you would have met a whole new shepherd.

What a difference a week makes.

Seven days ago I was just starting a 3-day vacation and was setting into a hotel in Venice, FL to spend a few days with family in a somewhat warmer clime. My office was a seat at a table in a workroom shared with 6-8 other people, and my equivalent to drawers was an old copier paper box.

Tonight I'm back in "sunny" Philadelphia watching it rain and be 40-something while my week-old sunburn itches. My office is now a low-wall cubicle in a very nicely laid-out office floor with a good lunchroom and a number of other amenities. Main downside is that anyone half a floor away can see what you're doing and I got a very straightforward warning from my boss to not blog comment during working hours.

:(

However, I also realize and recognize that I have things a hell of a lot better than all the lizards out there with employment issues.

Double rhapsody:

A friend of mine form high school has started sending me cassette tapes he mostly recorded of the radio in Northern NJ in the mid to late 70's. We grew up in a suburb of NYC, perfectly located to grab the radio signals form Long Island, Northern NJ and NYC. WLIR, WNEW, WNYU, WFMU, Fordham's radio station, Rutger's etc etc. Steve spend many a night with his cassette deck capturing David Bromberg, Bruce Springsteen, Jimmy Cliff, Gil Scott-Heron, Ricky Ford and other NY young lions of hard bop and a shit load of soon to be legendary as well as soon to be forgotten players who spilled through the NYC area in the 70's. When I left Jersey in 1977, he had at least 2 dresser drawers full of cassette tapes. He just started sending me tapes to dump to digital and master using my high end A/D convertors.

Tonight I had the pleasure of a six pack of Mt. Carmel Amber Ale and listening to Sea Level live from My Fathers Place, a somewhat legendary club on Long Island. Sounds like a radio tape due to the compression, so it was probably broadcast over WLIR. If you've never heard of Sea Level, they were a band formed after the first break up of the Allman Brothers about 1976. Featuring Chuck Leavelle, Jaimoe and Lamar Williams of the Allman's and guitarist Jimmy Nalls, this version also had the incredible Randall Bramblett on sax and Davis Causey on guitar. Sea Level fused southern soul, rock and jazz with incomparable musicianship. This tape is un-fucking-real.

I would guess strays - there are always a couple of feral cats about, it seems. We have 4 cats of our own and a couple that hang around and we feed them. And fix up a space in the carport attic with a a couple of boxes & old comforters so they can find a warm place in the winter. One of our four started out as one of those strays - skinny, all cut up - now she's fat and somehow, living inside. I don't know exactly when that happened.

The mother lived 2 houses down north of us and the son, 3 or 4 houses south of us. I can't remember exactly, it was in the '70s.

My younger brother and I were drug using teenagers that played loud music. Once, just to piss them off, my drummer brother and I took our equipment outside on the front lawn, turned the amps up as loud as possible and played our version of 'Whole Lotta Love'.

Mom moved the kennel to an acreage 250kms away the next year.

Where the hell would they even get the cats? Would they, like, buy them from a pet store to toss in? Catch strays? Steal other people's pets? I don't know which of those options is worst, but they're all pretty sick.

Who knows, cats ran around free at the time. We only know this because my younger brother's best friend watched them do it, and we found a dead cat in the pen several months later. I suspect all but one of the cats got away, the pen walls were only 6' tall and made of plywood.

seven out of the last ten songs I've sampled sound like mellowed down early '80's punk B sides and are so derivative I know what's going to play two bars before it does...

Yes.

I think this sub-thread explains why my brother wants 80+ acres of land to build his house on. Not only the seclusion of not being that close to neighbors (which he sort of has now), but the ability to sets things up so that he doesn't even see them in the distance.

I grew up on 80 acres. Never had the sheriff show up at any of my older brothers' parties or mine until about 1983, when someone built a house on the hill across the gully and the sound carried...it also didn't help that people were out doing target practice with guns...that tends to make flatlanders who move to the country nervous.

Those look comfy. I must get one.

BTW, can I put out a vote of thanks to the Mormon community, for manufacturing wedding dresses with sleeves? My search for a wedding dress was deeply complicated by the fact that strapless is apparently the name of the game for the decade, and there just wasn't no way.

There ALSO wasn't no way I was going to wear one of the high-necked retro-80s styles popular in the Chassidic communities.

Apparently, Mormons and I have similar ideas about modesty. Well, not the dresses for the Temple weddings. Those were a bit too much. But the other ones.

Eventually, I ended up with something from a local Jewish designer, but the Mormons were a much-needed break when I was losing my mind looking at one strapless dress after another.

Got "The Stare" from my "I'm not weird, I'm gifted" teenage niece this past weekend.

We were knee deep in the Peace River in Florida near Arcadia. Shoveling gravel from the river bottom and screening it to look for fossilized shark teeth and other interesting objects; (ray teeth, elephant teeth, horse teeth, pieces of bone, etc.) Part of a field trip by the Tampa Bay Fossil Club that my brother stumbled upon via the internet.

At some point during the work I commented to her -- "It's odd how all this stuff got here when it's less than 6000 years old!"

My niece was onto sarcasm by the time she was eight. Necessary as a survival mechanism with my brother and I about.

I once interviewed a very elderly man--fought in the Austro-Hungarian army during WWI--who actually came out to San Francisco twice. The first time he got an apartment without heat, and at some point said, "What kind of tropical climate is this, my feet are falling off," and went back to New York.

Tried again a few years later, and that time it took.

Mr. Katz, the WWI veteran, told an astonishing story about how he and a group of other POWs left Soviet custody. They'd been taken prisoner, and put to work on farms. Of course, all hell breaking loose in Russia at that point. At some point, a high-ranking Red officer came to town, and Mr. Katz decided to check in with him, so he introduced himself, explained that he was a POW from Hungary, and asked if there was any information on when he and his friends might be exchanged or released.

The man looked at him, and said, 'There are no prisoners of war.'

Mr. Katz said that, yes, obviously there were, and he was one, so...

The guy gave him a long, hard look and said, "Comrade Stalin has said, there are no prisoners of war."

That night, the prisoners were pulled together in a group by the men from the town, who gave them some food, and told them that they thought their army was thataway. They suggested that now would be a real good time to start walking.

They met up with the Austo-Hungarian forces a week later, just in time to come down with the flu--luckily, they were quarantined from the rest of the troops, because of fears that they might have been infected with Communism.

Actually, in the Upper Peninsula (UP) of Michigan, the smelt run is a right of passage. You get out in the streams (cooooold!!) when they swim upstream to spawn, and the first fish one nets must have its head bitten off by the catcher before it is finger-gutted and thrown in to the fat fryer.

Nope. It fits the classic definition of a space hulk entering the warp without a properly shielded drive system and without a navigator. The original crew were directly exposed to the warp, a daemon used it to re-enter realspace, and proceeded to corrupt or kill the rescue party.

re: #488 Floral Giraffe

Space Hulk

A Space Hulk is a massive conglomeration of lost ships and wrecks fused together. They drift in and out of the warp through space and during the millennia the lost ships join together into one enormous body. Many times they are so huge that they have their own atmosphere and gravity. Since the hulks often exit and re-enter the warp seemingly at random, searching or traveling in them is dangerous in the extreme.

The Imperial Navy, and all Imperial forces and authorities as a whole, have standard orders to survey such objects and to report their location. The hulks consist of ships and items of technology millennia old, and the recoverable technology can be of immense value to the Imperium, and especially to the Adeptus Mechanicus. Thus elite Imperial forces are sent aboard to clear out infestations. Depending on the strategic situation (availability of troops, proximity to vital Imperial star systems, safety margins, etc) Space Marines are sent to purge the hulk of any alien infestations.

I was watching many hours of the House hearings.

Of the thousands and thousands of possible areas of gov't expenditures, and of the billions and billions (even trillions) of dollars spent, what did the GOP reps, amendment after amendment, offer and discuss?

Exactly what the NYT piece opined: an ideological war, and one targeted mostly at women.

A handful of programs whose costs measure in the mere millions and whose effects concentrated on women - that is what the GOP offered as your "fiscal discipline."

Fiscal discipline? The last president who balanced a budget was Bill Fucking Clinton. Don't even *think* of mentioning "Conservatives" and "fiscal discipline" since 2000.

You don't fight wars without raising taxes to pay for it. Ever. It's just rock dumb.

You don't give profit driven financial institutions free control over "financial instruments". Ever. It's rock dumb.

You will notice that the Canadian dollar is now worth more than the American dollar. Historically, it's been worth about 80 cents. Know why?

The Canadian banking regs prevented their banks from speculating or investing in the crap that American banks created and sold, causing the present financial crisis. The Canucks are sitting pretty. Oh, and they aren't being bankrupted by their health care and entitlement systems.

Fancy that.

496 Girth  Fri, Feb 25, 2011 9:04:54pm

Good evening everyone.

I know that I lurk more than I post and when I do it is quite frequently a smart-ass remark of some kind, but tonight I need to be serious for a moment.

My grandmother is rapidly reaching the end of her 87 year long journey. She was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer three weeks ago, and this morning we put her into hospice care and signed her Do Not Resuscitate orders. She has been in severe pain for the last couple of days, but now that hospice is involved they have put her on stronger pain management medication and she has been sleeping comfortably since late this afternoon. She is able to relax now and I no longer see the look of pain that has until now refused to leave her face, even while she slept. I believe that she will be gone within 3-4 days, although it could be even sooner.

Right up until the time she entered the hospital three weeks ago she was a lovely, active and vibrant woman. I can relate her strength with one sentence: She was a World War II widow who raised two daughters as a single mother through the Fifties and Sixties. Let that sink in and think about how difficult that must have been.

There is nothing more important to her than her two daughters, four grandchildren, and two great-granddaughters. She is surrounded by the ones she loves and who love her. Yesterday I was able to have some heart-wrenching but wonderful private time with her and I will try to repay a small part of my debt to her for everything she has done for me over the years by being with her until the end.

If you're so inclined, pray that her pain has finally ended and that she finds her way swiftly to her Lord.

Apologies for long-windedness and for being a buzzkill, but it was cathartic to write.

re: #496 Girth

I will pray for her and for your family.

Much love.

Simple, but wrong. But this round of budget fights is bringing everyone back to type. Conservatives band together to fight for fiscal discipline, while the New York Times goes back to smearing them. Call it Welcome Back To Normal Times.

Where have yo been the last few weeks? Please.

Hi Floral,
Just thinking about your little beauties...
I'm starting to wonder if they over sold the snow. I was just up Little Tujunga canyon, 1700 feet. The temperature was about 48-50. That will take a big drop to get snow, which last occurred there in 1949. I think we might get a big dry cold, rather than snow.

Time for the Creationism update:

Some days ago I posted about the Chicago area school district whose board president and one other candidate came out in support of teaching creationism in their district.

Well, we're back in Chicago-land, and to another district:

All four Dist. 95 candidates back teaching creationism in science classes

All four candidates for the Lake Zurich Unit District 95 school board believe creationism should be taught alongside evolution in science classes.

One, Chris Wallace, went so far as to say creationism is fact and evolution is just a theory.

[...]

Three of the candidates — Jim Burke, Doug Goldberg and Tony Pietro — are incumbents seeking additional four-year terms on the board. Wallace is a political newcomer.

[...]

Opponents of the public-school teaching of creationism point to a 1987 U.S. Supreme Court ruling barring creationism from science classes because it would serve as an endorsement of religion or a particular religious belief.

Other groups, including the Carol Stream-based Illinois Family Institute, support creationism’s introduction in school as a way to present both sides of an argument.
Pietro believes creationism should be taught in science class to give students “as much information as possible” about the origins of life. [TEACH THE CONTROVERSY!!]

“I think we can say this is a theory,” he said Thursday. “None of us were here when man was created.”
When the court rulings on the issue were mentioned, Pietro didn’t waver.

“When we teach (it), we need to say this is a theory,” he said.

Wallace took an even stronger stance on the issue.
“Creationism to me is factual,” he said. “Darwinism is a theory.”

As for court rulings against teaching creationism in science classes, Wallace said people must work within the law or change it.

Goldberg also emphatically supported adding creationism to the science curriculum.
“I’m a good, God-fearing American and the answer is ‘Yes,’” he said. “Clearly, religion in general is a big part of our daily lives as Americans. I believe that allowing a student to be exposed to the theory of creationism is a relevant and reasonable thing to do.”

Goldberg said he “hadn’t studied the legal ramifications” of the issue.

Burke also said “yes,” but not as enthusiastically as the other candidates. He acknowledged scientific evidence supports evolution.

“It’s not a belief, it’s proven fact,” Burke said. “I would hate to see the line between those two things blurred.”
If teaching creationism in science classes is unconstitutional, officials shouldn’t try to get around the law, he added.

[...]

Creationism is alive and well in the hinterlands. That's why Angle is following around that latest creationist movie, to all the first 4 primary/caucus states.

re: #520 000G

Supreme Council of the Armed Forces

I know the army is in temporary control, but that's kinda frightening isn't it? What of the top brass? This guy, Field Marshal Mohamed Hussein Tantawi.

Tantawi, who is of Nubian origin[4][5], received his commission as a military officer on 1 April 1956 serving in the infantry. He took part in the Sinai War of 1956, the Six-Day War of 1967 and the Yom Kippur War of 1973, all against Israel. He held various commands and was assigned as military attaché to Pakistan. Tantawi has served as Commander of the Presidential Guard and Chief of the Operations Authority of the Armed Forces. In 1990/1991 he also took part in the Gulf War against Iraq.

On 20 May 1991, following the dismissal of Lt. General Youssef Sabri Abu Taleb[6], Tantawi was appointed as Minister of Defense and Military Production and commander-in-chief of the Egyptian Armed Forces. He was also appointed as Field Marshal. It is believed that Tantawi would have succeeded Mubarak as president of Egypt, had the assassination attempt in June 1995 been successful.[7] Early in 2011, Tantawi was seen as a possible contender for the Egyptian presidency.[8] Amidst the 2011 Egyptian protests, Tantawi was promoted to the ministerial rank of Deputy Prime Minister, while retaining the defense portfolio, on 31 January 2011.

On 11 February 2011 when President Hosni Mubarak resigned, after 18 days of protests from the Egyptian people, he transferred authority to the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces, headed by Tantawi. The council will rule with the Chairman of the Supreme Constitutional Court, Farouk Sultan, and dissolve the Egyptian parliament.[9]

I guess the most obvious question is how can someone be a school board member and not be familiar with constitutional laws surrounding what can and cannot be taught in school?

Knowledge of the law, the Constitution, or science is not a prerequisite for getting elected to a school board.

re: #522 marjoriemoon

It was to be expected. Of course the powerful and wealthy Army elite that was part of the Mubarak regime in many ways is not going down without a fight. The question seems to be how much they are willing and able to run the country now, especially considering the massive ongoing labor strikes, and also considering that the protestors can still throw a lot of monkey wrenches into their machine until the scheduled election in September…
