Outrageous!
I'm partial towards the mahi mahi. Great fish for the grill and it's more sustainable than the ahi. I'm pretty sure they're both net caught fish so there is the issue of by catch of other species.
Pacific rock fish is affordable, line caught (so there's no by catch) and very sustainable.

Been surfing around on Judith Curry's blog on climate change - lots of interesting stuff happening there, it's a real flame war - and also some other climate change blogs. Inevitably, I wound up at WUWT and just for kicks watched an amazingly over-the-top (lots of "One World Government stuff) video by the meteorologist John Coleman.
Anyway, Coleman mentions a poll done by Scientific American that showed that "science readers at least have abandoned the global bandwagon."
So I figured I'd Google a bit, and came across this:
Readers of the Wall Street Journal may have been surprised by an editorial that appeared Tuesday. We editors at Scientific American certainly were.
In his opinion piece, techno-utopian intellectual George Gilder takes California's Silicon Valley to task for its green initiatives to create jobs. At one point, he makes this sloppy claim:
"Republican politicians are apparently lower in climate skepticism than readers of Scientific American, which recently discovered to its horror that some 80 percent of its subscribers, mostly American scientists, reject man-made global warming catastrophe fears."
First, fewer than 10 percent of our subscribers are scientists. Second, the 80 percent climate denial number is not to be believed.
For that 80 percent figure, I'm guessing Gilder relied on a poll that we created for an October 2010 article on Judith Curry. Question number 3 in particular asked visitors, "What is causing climate change?" The poll results show that 77.8 percent responded "natural processes"; only 26.4 percent picked "greenhouse gases from human activity."
Ignore for the moment that this poll was not scientific (nor was it meant to be) and that it was open to all who have access to the Internet, not just to our subscribers, as Gilder implied.
Rather, the big problem was that the poll was skewed by visitors who clicked over from the well-known climate denier site, Watts Up With That? Run by Anthony Watts, the site created a web page urging users to take the poll.
It sure worked. Our traffic statistics from October 25, when the poll went live, to November 1 (the latest for which we have data on referrals) indicate that 30.5 percent of page views (about 4,000) of the poll came from Watts Up. The next highest referrer at 16 percent was a Canadian blog site smalldeadanimals.com; it consists of an eclectic mix of posts and comments, and if I had to guess, I would say its users leaned toward the climate denier side based on a few comments I saw. Meanwhile, on the other side of the climate debate, Joe Romm's Climate Progress drove just 2.9 percent and was the third highest referrer.
So we were horrified alright---by the co-opting of the poll by Watts Up users, who probably voted along the denier plank. In fact, having just two sites drive nearly half the traffic to the poll assuredly means that the numbers do not reflect the attitudes of Scientific American readers.
I'm not sure what the poll numbers ultimately mean. (The poll also showed that 68 percent think science should be kept out of the political process--when did we officially go back to medieval thinking?) Given how the poll has become meaningless and skewed, I have taken it offline.
We certainly took our lumps from all sides about this online poll, and we learned from the criticisms and will aim to do better next time.
And George, if you must know, in another poll of 21,000 readers we conducted earlier this year, 40 percent of respondents said that over the past year they became "more certain that humans are changing climate"; 46 percent said their views were "unchanged" and only 14 percent were "more doubtful that human activity is affecting the climate."
Reading Curry's blog is very interesting, as her becoming a "heretic" has really roiled the debate - but unfortunately her credibility is severely compromised because she is associating with frauds like John Coleman and Anthony Watts.

re: #45 Talking Point Detective
And I found this at the Cato Institute website:
But, as a make-up call for calling attention to Curry, Scientific American has run a poll of its readers on climate change....SciAm probably expected a lot of people would agree with the key statement in their poll that the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is “an effective group of government representatives and other experts.”
Hardly. As of this morning, only 16% of the 6655 respondents agreed. 84%—that is not a typo—described the IPCC as “a corrupt organization, prone to groupthink, with a political agenda.”
The poll also asks “What should we do about climate change?” 69% say “nothing, we are powerless to stop it.” When asked about policy options, an astonishingly low 7% support cap-and-trade, which passed the U.S. House of Representatives in June, 2009, and cost approximately two dozen congressmen their seats.
The real killer is question “What is causing climate change?” For this one, multiple answers are allowed. 26% said greenhouse gases from human activity, 32% solar variation, and 78% “natural processes.” (In reality all three are causes of climate change.)
And finally, “How much would you be willing to pay to forestall the risk of catastrophic climate change?” 80% of the respondents said “nothing.”
Remember that this comes from what is hardly a random sample. Scientific American is a reliably statist publication and therefore appeals to a readership that is skewed to the left of the political center. This poll demonstrates that virtually everyone now acknowledges that the UN has corrupted climate science, that climate change is impossible to stop, and that futile attempts like cap-and-trade do nothing but waste money and burn political capital, things that Cato’s scholars have been saying for years.
And just think, there are libertarians all around the blogosphere for whom the Cato Institute is the go-to place for evidence to back their beliefs.

LVQ answered the 'How do we know humans are a principal cause of global warming' for me, as opposed to natural phenomena or a combination of factors.
He explained about the rate of change.
Natural phenomena or combinations of natural phenomena occur at a certain rate that can be measured.
Current global warming can be attributed primarily to human contribution because those contributions, when added up, point to accelerated warming. That isn't to say there might not be natural climatological phenomena involved, but even if there is, the change is accelerated by human activity.

Hint: move south.
Yeah, come down here. Enjoy the soothing pitter-pat of golfball-sized hail making your car look like it was massaged by a flock of ball peen hammers every spring. Enjoy tornado warnings every other day for 3 weeks that never never pan out, and just when you start to ignore them and stop feeling anxiety every time the siren goes off, a real tornado tears through a neighborhood a few blocks away.
Enjoy the 100+ degree temps from July through August, during which your electricity bill will go through the roof. Marvel at the amazingly frequent stories of infants left to bake to death inside locked cars, and of joggers and bicyclists who die of acute dehydration because they think carrying around a water bottle is for limp-wristed sissies. If you live along the Gulf coast, enjoy your annual hurricanes and floods. Enjoy not being able to buy homeowner's insurance for less than what it would cost to just replace your house and all your belongings out of pocket.
Enjoy the "Autumn", all 3 weeks of it, as the temps drop below 60 and people start breaking out the parkas and firewood. Enjoy the first freeze of the year, during which 0.5" of ice accumulation will shut down your entire city for at least a day, more likely two or three. This is because when moisture of any kind falls out of the sky, people lose all ability to drive (DFW drivers are notoriously insane year-round, it should be noted), and the unwritten rule of the road becomes, "when in doubt, close your eyes and floor it." When the bar would close all of the vermin would come out and you would hear the hooting and hollering. And when guys get drunk they suddenly think they're Hercules and everyone they run into must be slayed! I was at this other bar once and ran into one guy who (about 6'-8" tall) was hanging out outside. So my friend who is about 6'-8" asks him what he was doing out there and he said he was just waiting around to start a fight with someone. Maybe he was kidding I don't know. He didn't seem like the type.

I never liked bars. The longer you stay in them the worse it gets. Right before closing time is the worst time of all. Then you get out and you're either drunk or tipsy yourself and you have to drive with cops all over the place? I tell you, almost 90 percent of the time I've seen people leave bars and if the cops actually stopped everyone that left the majority of them would get a DWI. But of course that never happens.

U.N. Security Council slaps sanctions on Libya
UNITED NATIONS — The U.N. Security Council Saturday unanimously imposed travel bans and asset freezes on Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi, members of his family and inner circle amid continuing attacks on anti-government protesters. The council imposed an asset freeze on Gadhafi, his four sons and one daughter and a travel ban on the whole family along with 10 other close associates. The council also backed an arms embargo.
The resolution adopted by the 15-nation body also called for the immediate referral of the deadly crackdown on demonstrators in Libya to the International Criminal Court in The Hague for investigation and possible prosecution of anyone responsible for killing civilians.
Boy, that UN is seriously tough. Mo is probably shaking right now after that can of whoopass was just opened up on him.

More details are coming out about yesterday's refinery attack in Iraq:
Bomb attack kills four oil workers and shuts down Iraq's biggest refinery
MILITANTS attacked Iraq's largest oil refinery yesterday, killing four workers and detonating bombs that touched off a raging fire and shut down the plant in northern Iraq.
In the southern town of Samawa, a second refinery was shut down by fire but officials said initial reports indicated it was started by a technical failure rather than an attack. The militants planted explosives at a kerosene and benzene productionADVERTISEMENT
unit at the northern refinery in the town of Baiji, a former al-Qaeda stronghold 112 miles north of Baghdad.
"The refinery has completely stopped," local governor Ahmed al-Jubouri said.
"It's a big loss for the whole country. All Iraqi cities depend on its production."[...]
And more about the state of Iraq:
After Iraq's Day of Rage, a Crackdown on Intellectuals
Iraqi security forces detained about 300 people, including prominent journalists, artists and lawyers who took part in nationwide demonstrations Friday, in what some of them described as an operation to intimidate Baghdad intellectuals who hold sway over popular opinion. On Saturday, four journalists who had been released described being rounded up well after they had left a protest of thousands at Baghdad's Tahrir Square. They said they were handcuffed, blindfolded, beaten and threatened with execution by soldiers from an army intelligence unit. [...]
It's stories like these which makes it not unwarranted to be pessimistic about Iraq's future.
And, given Americans' desire to continue to make oil the key lynchpin in our economy and our way of life, those types of stories are sour indicators of our future, too.

I had a neighbor from hell once. It really seemed as though she lived every moment of her life waiting for one of my dogs to bark, and then behaving as though it was the same thing as hosting a Black Sabbath concert on my driveway at 3:00am on a Tuesday.
She called the HOA, she called the police multiple times, and she sent certified letters threatening litigation. The problem is, my dogs weren't the droids she was looking for. Aside from the fact that my dogs weren't unattended outdoor barkers, she claimed dog noise incidents occurred on days when we were out of the state with our dogs in tow.
Thanks to her, a cop once showed up in the middle of the night when we were asleep, our dogs in the same room of course, and dented the shit out of our front door with his flashlight. The fact that our dogs barked at THAT was proof enough to him that she was in the right, and wrote us a citation that was promptly dismissed. I hope he has hemorrhoids.
Even weirder was the fact that EVERYONE in the surrounding area had dogs, and a few of them barked 24/7. I don't know whether or not she complained about everyone else. We had never spoken a word to her, so I don't know why she chose to focus in on us.
When we got divorced, my ex rented the house to a couple who had 4 beagles who were the loudest, noisiest mo-fos I've ever heard in my life. They barked ALL THE TIME. I very happily sent my ex a certified letter stating that I did not object to her renting out the house, with the stipulation that the renters must be allowed to keep their pets.

I'll bet the place is probably worth a small fortune by now.
I doubt it. The current owner does no repairs, unless forced to by the city. I moved after the roof "leaked". The city wrote 228 building code violations that had to be fixed, before they would certify occupancy. Lovely building, great style & bones, HORRIBLE owner.

It has some uses. It can supervise the elections after Gaddafi gets the boot, and help distribute aid. What it isn't good for is actually getting rid of a tyrant.

Protest Against Airline Official
A group of about 40 Libyans claimed that a high ranking official from Afriqiyah Airways who left Malta yesterday should be arrested because he has been making arrangements for mercenaries to be flown to Libya from sub-Saharan Africa. The Libyans staged a protest outside the Corinthia San Ġorġ in St Julian’s at about 1pm yesterday, claiming that Sabri El Shadli, chairman of Afriqiyah Airways, was at the hotel. They claimed he is a criminal, because he has been helping mercenaries to be flown in to Libya “to kill fellow Libyans”.
Mr El Shadli was escorted to the airport, where he was seen alone in a police car. He was due to board a plane for Dubai.
He was escorted through the ‘Bulky Luggage’ area, much to the anger of protesters who barged through, saying he is a terrorist and must be stopped. It is thought that he arrived in Malta on Wednesday.
Police at the airport tried calming down the Libyan men, one of whom shouted: “He killed my father (“qatel lil missieri”).

Mo gives the foreign media a tour of Tripoli to show them how great things are but it doesn't quite work out like he wanted it to...
Long Bread Lines and Barricades in Libya’s Capital
TRIPOLI, Libya — A bold play by Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi to prove that he was firmly in control of Libya appeared to backfire Saturday, as foreign journalists he invited to the capital discovered blocks of the city in open defiance of his authority.
Witnesses described snipers and antiaircraft guns firing at unarmed civilians. Many said security forces had been removing the dead and wounded from streets and hospitals, apparently in an effort to hide the mounting toll.
But when government-picked drivers escorted journalists on tours of the city on Saturday morning, the extent of the unrest was unmistakable. Workers were still hastily painting over graffiti calling Colonel Qaddafi a “bloodsucker” and demanding his ouster.

Yep. Energy drinks are just a middle man. They're using caffeine for the boost anyway. Why mix it up with other junk. Sugars will make you hit the wall once that buzz is through while caffeine is processed more efficiently. It has to be a shiny black bean and to that end I always prefer the espresso roasts.

Et tu, Pamela? We have known each other for , what, 5 years now, and u believe some bullshit someone posts on the web without bothering to even e-mail me about it first? You couldn't verify before you did that? I mean, this Bary Rubin and whomever else that don't even know me can make their own conclusions, but you? For real? I would think you would be the first to call them on this nonsense, and instead you jumped on the bandwagon. And to think I have always defended you.
Nevermind that I didn't call for those things, but I said that Israel should expect them to happen and should place them into context. Nevermind that I wrote them to assure Israelis that there won't be a war ( we don't want one and the military will never allow one), but that those 3 things would have to happen due to the appeasement of the general population in order to eliminate any argument that could be used to attack Israel ( siege on ghaza, they steal our Gas, the israelis are smuggling shit though our border and funding and arming the bedouins, etc..). Nevermind that my opposition to the Amr Moussa candidacy is primarily due to my beliefe that the next 6 years should be focused on rebuilding egypt and not grandstanding with Israel. Nevermind that politically speaking, Israel, like any other government in the world, would have to play politics and create good relations with the newly formed egyptian government, and therefore some acts of good will, especially after 35 years of peace would be warranted. But no, I forgot, you guys are twitchy and paranoid. You see Qaradawy giving a speech in Tahrir and you immediately think "Khomeini, Iran, Islamic jihad, wahhhhhh" without asking urself who brought him to speak (the military, part of the old regime) and if the purpose is to scare the living crap out of every single one of you for this specific purpose: to get the freedom-loving people of the american right turn against the Tahrir protesters, who actually embody those ideals you claim to defend. And you guys fell for it, because, well, my name is Mahmoud, so I must be aligned to the Islamic caliphate or some shit. God, I wish you would stop listening to Glenn Beck. Last I checked he never even came here, so he really doesn't know what he is talking about.

Nevermind that every single journalist I met there, including the FOX NEWS team, agreed that this isn't anywhere controlled or promoted by the Muslim Brotherhood (they are maybe, 20%, and they never participated on the 25th or the 28th, and only showed up afterwards), and that this view that they are the ones intiating and controlling the uprising is totally false. Nevermind that being pushed to do this by the US and Israel and that we are all american zionist agents is exactly what the pro-Mubarak (your dear friend of Israel who promoted anti-Israeli sentiment amongst the egyptian people for 30 years intentionally to distract them from his rule) people have accused us of being from the beginning. Nevermind that when the Mubarak police beat me up and arrested me, this was what they accused us of: that we are foreign funded, of being zionist agents. Ignore all of this, throw it all away, alongside with our friendship under the Bus why don't you?

If you truly understood the dynamics of the local socio-political scene in Cairo, you would not be making remarks as such. In fact, it is quite disturbing that political commentators on the far and extreme right cannot distinguish the difference between friend and foe. It is a damn shame that we stick our necks out in the most hostile environments in the world to defend secular democracy, the freedom of speech and many other core fibers of true American values, and folks like you find the time in to smear unfounded political rhetoric on people like Sand Monkey. Shame on you.

hehe We had a monk parrot, quaker, green parrot. She loved to whistle the Andy Griffith theme song and had various phrases, but singing was her favorite thing.
I got her from a neighbor who had a number of parrots. The smartest, Fatz, said, "Where's Elvis?" and "Give me a Beer." When he got to squacking, my friend would cover the cage and tell him, "You're going to the bathroom!" and he put him in there until he calmed down. Fatz got on to him him quick and would say, "Not the badroom! Not the badroom!"

Biggest Fish Face Little Risk of Being Caught
By JOE NOCERA
Late last week, word leaked out that Mr. Mozilo, who had co-founded Countrywide Financial in 1969 — and, for nearly 40 years, presided over its astonishing rise and its equally astonishing fall — would not be prosecuted by the Justice Department. Not for insider trading. Not for failing to disclose to investors his private worries about subprime loans. Not for helping to create a culture at Countrywide in which mortgage originators were rewarded for pushing fraudulent loans on borrowers.
In its article about the Justice Department’s decision, The Los Angeles Times said prosecutors had concluded that Mr. Mozilo’s actions “did not amount to criminal wrongdoing.”
Just months earlier, the Justice Department concluded that Joe Cassano shouldn’t take the fall for the financial crisis either. Mr. Cassano, you’ll recall, is the former head of the financial products unit of the American International Group, a man whose enthusiasm for credit-default swaps led, pretty directly, to the need for a huge government bailout of A.I.G. There was a time when it appeared that there was no way the government would let Mr. Cassano walk. But it did...

My limited understanding is that the highly intelligent parrots (African Greys in particular) are a colossal pain in the ass for the first ~10 years of their lives. If not for that, I'd willingly have at least a couple of birds capable of re-enacting Fry & Laurie routines, reciting x-rated limericks, and sexually harassing everyone and everything that came within earshot of them.

It is about time. For the last 50 years, America has treated the Middle East as if it were just a collection of big gas stations: Saudi station, Iran station, Kuwait station, Bahrain station, Egypt station, Libya station, Iraq station, United Arab Emirates station, etc. Our message to the region has been very consistent: "Guys, here's the deal. Keep your pumps open, your oil prices low, don't bother the Israelis too much and, as far as we're concerned, you can do whatever you want out back. You can deprive your people of whatever civil rights you like. You can engage in however much corruption you like. You can preach whatever intolerance from your mosques that you like. You can print whatever conspiracy theories about us in your newspapers that you like. You can keep your women as illiterate as you like. You can create whatever vast welfare-state economies, without any innovative capacity, that you like. You can under-educate your youth as much as you like. Just keep your pumps open, your oil prices low, don't hassle the Jews too much — and you can do whatever you want out back."

Yup, and we subconsciously expect it to continue this way:
Larger-Than-Life Dallas Is Barely Growing
[...]
But critics suggest that Dallas’s larger-than-life image may be shrinking for another reason. They say that officials’ lack of investment in public schools, streets, parks and pools — the real-world priorities outside the city’s highbrow Arts District, with its cultural monuments designed by the hottest “starchitects” (Norman Foster, Rem Koolhaas, I. M. Pei, Renzo Piano) and soon-to-be sky-high Santiago Calatrava “signature” bridges — is sending white families and middle-class minorities moving to the suburbs. The result, they say, is an increasingly Hispanic, less educated and poor inner city.
[...]
Steve H. Murdock, a professor at Rice University and a former United States Census Bureau director, said it is routine for large central-city counties to experience declines or modest growth at the expense of more suburban areas. For years, he said, Dallas and Houston seemed to buck the trend. That dynamic could be changing now, with Dallas’s scant population increase and Houston’s modest 7.5 percent growth. “When you look at Dallas County, it stands out in terms of slow growth,” Mr. Murdock said.
And Dallas is in a position to fare worse than Houston in terms of population, Mr. Murdock said, because the city is older and geographically smaller, and has fewer places to build the sprawling residential developments that can be possible in the suburbs.
Mike Moncrief, the mayor of Fort Worth, said one of the big reasons for his city’s explosive growth is that development is moving from east to west. While Dallas County can “only continue to build density,” he said, its neighbors, including Tarrant County, have room to grow.
[...]
There's much in that article to discuss, one item of which is the inherent belief that we must forever build "suburbs", as if it is a God-given right to live 20 miles from where we work, to send our children 5 miles to school, and go out "on the town" some 30 miles away.

Yes, this thinking of old is deeply entrenched. Between reading Atlas Derp/comments and this, hope is waning. Friedman gets it, you get it... and another .00001% of the population get it.
I think the idea of jacking up taxes on gas is actually pretty simple, and most new building should include hi rise apartment complexes that can support massive PV and greenhouse growing systems within the complex. But it's too radical.

Arizona - land of Poor White Trash in the Statehouse:
Statement by Ariz. State Sen. Scott Bundgaard
[...] Last night, I was a participant in the National Kidney Foundation of Arizona ‘Dancing With The Stars' charitable event to raise money for this fine organization. [...]
While I may not have won the competition it was a wonderful tonight for a wonderful cause. Perhaps my fault was failing to ask my girlfriend to meet with Kurt Warner's wife about how to understand and support a spouse or partner for a ‘Dancing With The Stars' competition.
Upon leaving the event I was accused of inappropriately touching my dancing partner, in front of my parents and family mind you, and she proceeded to throw my clothes and other things out of my car on a freeway as I took her home. I stopped on the freeway to retrieve these items. As I was doing so my girlfriend yelled that she was going to take my car and moved into the driver's seat. I immediately returned to the car and asked her to get out. She refused. I had no choice but to pull her from the driver's seat which resulted in marks on her knees. I had also had no choice but to stop her from punching me and risking highway safety, all of which resulted in a black eye for me and a busted lip (photos available upon request). The authorities arrived as I tried to retrieve my belongings from the highway. I have never inappropriately touched a woman and never would. Period. I was not intoxicated. There was no ‘domestic violence.' Such conduct is offensive to me as it should be to all people. I waive any and all ‘legislative immunity.' If I did something wrong, charge me. I did not.
While a personal matter, I understand the public interest and apologize to any and all for what has taken place. I will not hide behind statements. This was done so to set the record straight. I am available for any and all interviews and for any and all questions."

Oh good Lord. And he dances, too?
Well, he partook in a "Dancing With The Stars"-branded fundraiser.
From his campaign site, his lead off paragraph about himself:
Born to a working class family, my strong faith, work ethic, values and sense of responsibility come from my parents and Arizona upbringing.
Oh, he's also the Republican Majority Leader of the AZ Senate. And while being part of the Senate:
He worked toward ending discrimination by public schools against student-led Bible clubs, [13] and putting pressure on HOAs who worked to prevent members from flying the American flag[14] and on the Phoenix Art Museum for using public funds to support exhibits that desecrate the American flag.

Does the Phoenix Art Museum frequently have exhibits that desecrate the American flag? I mean, do they, like, have a permanent American flag desecration art wing, or something?

Newt Gingrich confronted over affair
Newt Gingrich's speech at the University of Pennsylvania on Tuesday quickly took a turn for the dramatic when the first student to question him brought up his admitted extramarital affair and accused him of being “hypocritical” for espousing moral values.
"You adamantly oppose gay rights ... but you've also been married three times and admitted to having an affair with your current wife while you were still married to your second," Isabel Friedman, president of Penn Democrats, said to Gingrich. "As a successful politician who's considering running for president, who would set the bar for moral conduct and be the voice of the American people, how do you reconcile this hypocritical interpretation of the religious values that you so vigorously defend?"

As one of the chief reactionaries in AZ government we can expect the wingnuts to come to his aid:
Republic smears Sen. Scott Bundgaard, asks questions later — or never
[...]
Sen. Bundgaard has co-sponsored legislation challenging the claim of U.S. citizenship for children born in the state whose parents are residing in Arizona illegally, making him a juicy target for the pro-amnesty Arizona Republic
Yeah, so now it's just the "pro-amnesty" AZ Republic which is trying to tar the patriotic Bundgaard.
From Bundgaard's own statement it is pretty clear that he is in denial of how violent his relationship is (and that he's even partly a victim.) The dude is probably, from looking at his own website, in denial about a lot of things, including about himself.

Uh oh, looks like Esther needs to get moving fast:
Even among GOP faithful, Palin's star is fading
[...] Republicans still like her, but now they openly question whether she could or should be nominated for president, let alone elected.
At a recent gathering in South Carolina, the site of a crucial early presidential primary next year, party activists said the former Alaska governor didn't have the experience, the knowledge of issues or the ability to get beyond folksy slang and bumper-sticker generalities that they think is needed to win and govern.
Many are shopping for someone else. They're looking at Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn., for example, and seeing what they call a smarter, more experienced candidate who's equally as conservative.
"Sarah Palin with a brain," said Gail Moore, a Republican from Columbia.
[...]
Michele Bachmann is "smarter" than Sarah Palin?

Food for thought--there is a Stella Artois ad in which Adrian Brody sings to the beer as though it were a woman, and, among other things, refers to beheading her.
Why has Pamela Geller not leapt on this evidence of creeping Islamism in America, as promoted by the Belgians? Does she think this is unimportant merely because 'beheading' is what one does to a Stella Artois, and it's an alcoholic drink?

U.S. tells Gaddafi it is time to go as revolt closes in
Excerpt:
One key element in the opposition's efforts to unseat him may be tribal loyalties, always a factor in the desert nation of six million and one which Gaddafi, despite official rhetoric to the contrary, tended to reinforce down the years. His former justice minister Mustafa Mohamed Abud Ajleil, now gone over to the opposition in Benghazi, was quoted by the online edition of the Quryna newspaper as saying that an interim government, whose status remained unclear, would "forgive" his large Gaddadfa tribe for "crimes" committed by the leader.
Such declarations may be intended to erode Gaddafi's efforts to rally supporters into a do-or-die defense of the old guard.

Huh, hadn't heard of that wrestling story. Looks like everyone involved comported themselves pretty well.

Everyone respecting each other's positions and choices and stuff-- what's up with that?
As an ex-boxer and boxing instructor, I think aggression inside the ring is entirely different from aggression outside it. I haven't gotten into a brawl-type fight in more than twelve years, but if I weren't concerned about concussions, I'd still be sparring and boxing.
I think in order to do true intergender fights, you need to take the muscle/fat ratio into account, but other than that, I'm all for it. This would mean, of course, that there weren't any women at the heavyweight level, since women just aren't really capable of packing on muscle like that-- bodybuilders aside, who are, obviously, pathetic at fighting.
Anyway: I think any aggression, whatever the gender, outside the realm of sanctioned stuff like boxing, wrestling, etc., is wrong. I don't really think it's worse to be aggressive towards a woman except that, in general, it's going to be an unfair matchup with a more physically powerful man dominating the woman, and the man more comfortable with physical violence and aggression.
When teaching women how to fight, I noticed that the first thing that always had to be overcome was a hesitation, a flinch, something like that, when punching, kicking, etc. They started off, always, unsure that it was okay to hit, and that was made manifest down at the reflexive level.

I'd say that it's not a really firm inhibition, though. Girls get hit all the time. Spousal abuse is rampant, and sexual assault is rampant as well. I read it the other way: to whatever extent there's an inhibition against hitting girls, there's an inhibition against girls hitting, at all, even in self-defense.

I agree--it's way imperfect an inhibition, and we're moving backwards when we weaken it. (Our elementary school had mandatory boxing for everyone above 4th grade, but we were an all-boys 'boarding' school. I can't imagine that in our litigious modern system.)

I'm just not sure we're actually moving backwards by weakening the inhibition. I think, biologically, that the inhibition is not one against violence towards women, but against violence towards women other than your mate or your children. Men who abuse women aren't like to go around beating up women in general, they almost always beat up their wives and their daughters. To me, the inhibition isn't against using violence towards women, it's about more 'respecting' the monopoly of violence that that woman's mate and family has towards her.
It was socially acceptable in Victorian society to beat your wife. Even if it was seen, in the upper classes, as a bit of a sign of a bad temper, it didn't get you ejected from polite society, arrested, or suffer any negative consequence whatsoever. I'd say inhibitions against beating women mostly started with the feminist revelations about domestic violence, rather than having been part of our culture for a long time.

Fred Koch, (pronounced Coke) appeared to have a dual personality where he was an active member of the John Birch Society and railed against Communism, while making his first millions working with Stalin's Russia developing oil refineries during the 30's. He and his sister were helpful in the rise of Hitler's dominance leading up to the US declaration of War. Sister Issa was later tried and sentenced to life in prison having been found guilty of making lamp shades from the skin of terminated Jews.

We're talking about something that has been an ideal (i.e. not widely implemented) since the Middle Ages. It was also very class-oriented: "We defend the Flower of Southr'n Womanhood, but not those women picking cotton over there." In the poor parts of Pittsburgh in the '50s, hitting a girl was irretrievable loss of pre-teen face.

Correct, just agitprop. There was a human skin lampshade given as a gift to Kochs in, I think, 1941, but they had nothing to do with making it. Something like that also probably happened to the Danzig "human soap". Things tend to be exaggerated during and after wars.

During the Serbian genocide there were some very lurid stories about people killed by the Serbs en masse and then burned in ovens at some factory - the story was later debunked by the official commission which investigated it.

Both in the case of the Buchenwald lampshade and the Danzig human soap we have at most a defilement of corpses (without credible evidence that anyone was ever killed specifically for the lampshades and soap, not to mention that there is no evidence those were made from corpses of Jews) which is kinda tame considering what was going on at the same time. But of course it was these lurid details that would go well in the headlines.

Weird. People like that write as though their brain is in the grip of something else; they seem to think it's not obvious that they're trying to push their bullshit agenda through. From claiming it's all communists, to the weird allegation that immediately after WWII Americans would be attempting to create some sort of propaganda, the whole thing is a series of paranoid spikes.
It's also part of the revisionist fixation on irrelevant details; given that Dachau was not an extermination camp, and given the abundance of evidence of gassing and mass killing at other camps, why on earth would Americans perpetrate some sort of fraud to make it look as though Dachau was?
The most obvious explanation is that Dachau's gas chambers were either experimental, or simply never used because, logistically, it was determined it was better to send prisoners along to the extermination camps rather than do it at Dachau.

I will take a minor quibble with your argument - at first Dachau was seen as an extermination camp where 200,000+ perished (or, rather, there was no clear distinction between death camps and "just" concentration camps, considering the conditions in the latter as well as paucity of information), and the gas chamber was hyped in the newsreels (take a look at the original ones at USHMM site), so IF one argues from the assumption of "deceptive Americans", it would make some sense, especially since Americans didn't liberate the extermination camps. Of course, to argue like that one must be a loon in the first place. Which is my point about the webmaster. I had a hoot of a correspondence with her. She actually denied writing that text I linked to, lying that it was written by her webmaster without her knowing it (LOL). And here are some quotes (from 2004):
You have a Russian name and a Russian e-mail provider. Are you working for some foreign government trying to put American citizens on trial in a foreign country?Quote:
Here is my final word on your suspicions that I am a criminal and subject to prosecution in Germany and Israel for a thought crime.
[...]
I believe that Dachau had a working gas chamber which was used to kill Jews.Quote:
Tim Moore has removed the link to my site and the letter from my webmaster to him.
Now all you see is the photos of Robert Faurisson after one of several beatings by the Thought Police.Quote:
I hope that this will allay your suspicions that I am a criminal and that you will now close your Thought Police file on me and go on to investigate some other suspected criminal.

We can't get Firefly back, but they're gonna reboot this shit.
Hee.
I watched Castle this week and there was a little shout out to Firefly.
Castle's mom announced that she was going away for the weekend to this great and supposedly famous elite spa, called Serenity Oasis.
She was gushing about it and Castle was looking at her blankly.
She: "What? Do you mean you've never heard of Serenity?"
Castle, with a funny look shakes his head, "Um no. I haven't."
I laughed. The hubby said "Did I miss something? What was so funny about that?"
So I tried to explain, 'you see years ago there was this awesome show and people are still upset that it was cancelled and blah blah......'
He ended up giving me the same sort of blank look as Castle had.
I told him I would forgive his ignorance. No one is perfect. ;)

Ugh. Disgusting.
The part of the sentence, that the museum display cut out, explains why the Nazis made the decision to “transport the Jews to the east” six months after Germany attacked the Soviet Union: they didn’t want the Jews to cause them to lose another war.
Aside from clearly and odiously overlooking that that is not an explanation, but a pretext, that's an incredible fucking insult to every German Jewish WWI veteran.
Don't you see? They had to commit genocide against the Jews. It was all the Jews fault. Jews Jews Jews.

re: #408 Jadespring
She's also very ignorant for someone who has been "studying the Holocaust for 17 years". Haavara agreement aside, if she just read the 1937 Herbert Hagen report on his and Eichmann's visit to Palestine, he would see that this was the official position of the Nazi govt:
"Promotion of the Emigration of Jews from Germany. To further promote the emigration of Jews from Germany, the Jew Polkes proposed to make possible the emigration of 50,000 Jews per year with 1,000 Sterling per head, by means of an increase in the transfer of goods through Paltreu (Palaestina Treuhandstelle der Juden in Deutschland)* {*The German Office of the Ha'avara Company for the transfer of Jewish property from Nazi Germany to Palestine.} and "Nemico" (Near and Middle East Corporation). The goods would be sold in Palestine, Iraq, Turkey and in Peria. Immigration to Palestine would in this case be possible without the special consent of the English Mandatory government since Jews with 1,000 Sterling are considered as so- called capitalists.""Opinion This plan must be rejected by us for two reasons: (a) It is not our aim to have Jewish capital transferred, but rather, in the first place, to induce Jews without means to emigrate. Second, the aforementioned emigration of 50,000 Jews annually would in the main strengthen Judaism in Palestine, and considering that according to the policy of the Reich the establishment of an independent state of the Jews in Palestine should be prevented, this plan cannot be a subject for discussion.
(b) An Increase in the transfer of goods to the Near and Middle East would mean that these countries would be lost to the German Reich as 'countries supplying foreign currency.'
Furthermore this would strengthen the 'Ha'avara system' (Jewish companies for the transfer of capital of Jews emigrating from Germany), which was nurtured by the Reich Economics Ministry and to which we are opposed."

Soaring Food Prices Hit Poor Countries, Spur Farmers
Greg Westland produces hard red spring wheat and soybeans on about 5,600 acres in Cando, N.D. The snow is still deep in North Dakota, but Westland is preparing for planting, spending days in his shop with his sons, prepping equipment. The very high prices have convinced him to try to boost the number of bushels he produces per acre.
"We're adding more fertilizer, shooting for a 60-bushel hard red spring wheat crop up here and a 42-to-45-bushel soybean crop," Westland says.
Those yields would be about 20 percent above average. Cargill's Page says his company's brisk fertilizer and seed sales indicate that farmers are responding.

There is a wonderful way to make water seem really deep and wet. Use cutout curves of scrapbook paper in deep green and blue, then put a piece of that "bathroom" glass or plastic stuff (cut to fit) over it.
What I mean by "bathroom" glass is the stuff that can't see thru. It's still clear glass, but is textured so it refracts the light and you can't see thru it. It comes in a plastic version, I think you can find it in the screen door section of Home Depot. It refracts the light so the blue and green card stock is multiplied by the visual systems in the brain.
It would make a nice Aegean Sea.

Dude ... I admitted my mistake, but my point is that these revolutions are very important events with new and hopefully more enlightened leaders emerging. And if there is to be any hope for peace in the region, we need to compete in the arena of ideas and counter the poisonous messages when they pop up. I think we agree on this basic point. That is all I am getting at. If we act wisely and nudge the new leaders towards embracing Israel, it will be necessary to try our best to not allow the bad guys in the region to continue spreading their hatred unopposed.

And if there is to be any hope for peace in the region, we need to compete in the arena of ideas and counter the poisonous messages when they pop up.
I agree with that, but a piece of graffiti on a wall-- what sort of response does that call for? I'd say it calls for a little whitewash.
Antisemitism is a huge problem in Muslim society, and needs to be beaten back. But doing so isn't as simple as us entering the arena of ideas; the West, and the US, aren't exactly seen positively either. And we're going to be seen less positively if the only issue we appear to care about is whether or not these rebels are antisemitic.
We are still allied with the House of Saud, who are brutal oppressors of their people. Why are rebels supposed to trust us, when we support oppressive governments in the Middle East?

Good morning. I was disheartened to see a story about how the anti khadafy rebels were chanting "khadafy the Jew" in their protests.
[Link: www.vosizneias.com...]
It is a bad sign if that message is not vigourously denounced by other khadafy opponents. Anyone want to hold their breath waiting for it?
The graffiti in the center photo doesn't say anything about Jews, it literally says:
Qaddafi - Gaddafi
Ya kalb - Oh dog
Ya maklub - Oh rabid (comes from the same root word as dog, k-l-b)
Which roughly translates to: Gaddafi [is a] rabid dog.
The text in the right foreground of the photo is cut off, so all I can see if the ending letter, which is a soft "h". The text in the left background is hard to read and isn't a word I recognize, though I can make out a couple of the letters. In any event it doesn't say anything about Gaddafi or Jews (Jew is "yahud" in Arabic).
They must be referring to some other graffiti.

#1700: Two prominent US senators, John McCain and Joe Lieberman, have told CNN the US should be offering military aid to the emerging provisional government.
#1708: Mr Lieberman tells CNN the US must "give them the wherewithal to fight on behalf of the people of Libya against a really cruel dictator".

Thanks for the translation. I wouldn't be surprised if the report was true. We saw a bit of anti-Israel/anti-Jew stuff in the Egypt uprising but not as much as I would have expected. I assume it's probably a fairly common insult in the region and I wouldn't really expect some dude with a spray paint can lving in a rural village in northern Libya to adhere to Western sensitivities and political correctness anyways. If the leaders of the protests or the new government start making noise about exterminating the Jews then I'll start to worry.

FWIW, there are a number of English-Arabic online dictionaries that you can use to look up words:
[Link: www.ectaco.co.uk...]
[Link: dictionary.babylon.com...]
Most of you may not be able to ready the resulting Arabic, but I'm sure you're all smart enough to simply zoom in on the text with your browser until it's big enough for you to compare the shapes to whatever you see in a photo.

I think that would be a very stupid move at this point. Q'daffy is almost gone and the protesters can and should do it on their own. If they want help or support later on they'll get it. To interfere now would cause more problems and remove the legitimacy of a native protest movement.

You're welcome. I don't doubt that someone somewhere probably did write it (as an insult), I just wanted to point out that it wasn't what any of the graffiti in that particular photo said.

Yeah, I'm guessing the Libyans are going to have enough immediate problems on their plate for the foreseeable future to render any anti-Semitic notions a non-starter for the time being.

I agree.
The ONLY situation that I see where military intervention from a foreign government inside Libya would be the a direct threat to that countries nationals there.
The majority opinion from those in Libya has been "no outside military to assist".

My guess is their first order of business is to get the oil exports to Europe flowing again and start bringing in money. I don't think they want to rock the boat too much while they're establishing social and political reforms.
I know the dreaded "Bush Doctrine" is widely shunned these days but I think the best thing for long term stability and prosperity in the region is democratic governments. The trick will be establishing democratic societies to go along with those governments. There will surely be bumps in the road but hopefully once the people get used to making their own choices they'll start to understand the importance of free and open society.

THIS. They're going to have to figure out how to make freedom work in their society, which is radically different from ours in terms of culture, religion, history, etc. I think it's important that we stay calm and not freak out every time there's a bump in the road. As long as whatever they work out is compatible with modern representative democracy—even if it's not a carbon copy of our own, which I think is impossible as the demographics & dynamics are so different—then I think it'll be a vast improvement.

I want to feel sorry for Sandmonkey, but much as I dislike Geller I'm having a hard time doing so. If he's known her for 5 years as he claims, then he must be thoroughly familiar with her hateful bile. You lie down with dogs, you're gonna get fleas.

Just read it. Funny. :)
Other things of interest. People that seem to take tweets as some sort of detailed comments on policy and even as detailed policy announcements. Yes you can really explain, in detail, with detailed opinion, policy points in a tweet. Sure they're a basis but then when the tweeter goes on to explain with more detail...in non tweet form. Like with whole sentences and paragraphs....it still the 'tweet' that counts more.
It's not the first time I've seen this happen. I think it may actually scare me a bit.
Let's run the world in a 'tweet' format. Yep that will work.

Even countries with a lot of similarities and commonalities end up being different in a lot of ways. Canada and the US for instance. So much the same yet even now there are difference. Same sorts of people that settled it. Basically the same origins in terms of where it came from (Europe). Similar original cultures both N American and European and yet the democratic history of both our countries took different routes.

Not really. Anti-Semitism is a given in North Africa, and rumors about Gaddafi's supposed Jewish ancestors have been a fixture for many years.
