Apple releases the best cover in the universe
Technology • Views: 32,348

Engadget has hundreds of photos from today’s iPad 2 launch: Live from Apple’s iPad 2 event.

It strikes me as more of an evolutionary upgrade than a big leap into gadgetry unknown, but there are some very cool new features — like the HD video camera (although it’s got to be the most ungainly video camera ever designed), HDMI output, better display, and a dual processor. And the Smart Cover looks very handy.

It just might be enough to get me to buy one of these infernal things. I skipped the first model on general principles (unless someone gives it to me, I rarely acquire the first release of a gadget), and because I already have a MacBook Pro that’s much more capable than any iPad, for the work I do daily.

Okay…just looked at the engadget pictures. It’s a fucking toy. But it replaces the previous version of the fucking toy. Now everyone can be a music producer with 8 track recording (The Beatles ONLY HAD 4 TRACKS!!!)…

In gaming news, Fallout New Vegas just released the Dead Money expansion for the PC. If you’re a Fallout fan, I really reccomend it. It sticks with the basic Fallout themes, but introduces a really creepy, horror type setting.

Also, Dawn of War II: Retribution went live yesterday and they’ve gone back somewhat to the old DoW where you can build up bigger, more customizable forces.

yeah an MMO, go to [Link: www.riftgame.com…] for the story, it’s pretty complex and the ads for it have in them “You’re not in Azeroth anymore”. It takes the best features of Warhammer online (the PvP and the world events/event zones for random grouping to do quests) and some of the interface style of WoW and combines that with a pretty unique looking storyline, great graphics and lots of choices for character generation etc.

Hmmm. This may not be a popular point of view… I’m an Apple skeptic.
One thing you can count on Apple for is pissing off it’s early adopter customers. Add the pattern of overcharging for simple accessories and coming out with better features in a device for less or the same money each iteration is maddening. I’m surprised it’s only workers at the Chinese factories that have a suicide issue.

I bought DragonLady an Ipad for Christmas, and obviously I should have waited for her birthday. By then of course we’d have pad iteration 3… Even better for even less.

Apple needs to take a hard long look at the factory conditions. The way to prevent suicides may be to improve conditions or pay, rather than fences & pledges to not kill one’s self. This is cheap at too high a price. We sure do not see suicides or prevention methods like this in Silicon Valley!

Now my 81 year old customer just came and picked up his bike. He insisted on showing me the shampoo he bought at the hippy health food store, saying, “It doesn’t have any propylene glycol! I was talking to a doctor who told me, ‘I never yet met a cancer patient who didn’t have propylene glycol in their body.’”

Not as bad as this morning’s Truther, but it seems to be one of those days. I expect to hear from the YECer next.

Completely OT, but this is both pathetic and hilarious. There’s a bill in the Texas House now that proposes criminalizing hiring an illegal alien or undocumented worker unless you hire them to do housework or landscaping or child care.

LOL, this is from Andrew Sullivan, a reader writes in about Huck’s Rotary vs. Madrassa comment:

As a Rotarian, Huckabee’s attempt to use Rotary Clubs to supposedly contrast with an international mindset gave me a chuckle. After all, it is Rotary International – with 1.2 million Rotarians in approximately 200 countries or geographical regions, including Indonesia. Here’s a history of Rotary in Indonesia, going back to 1927.

Rotary’s focus is undeniably international and built upon cultural exchange. Its major goal is the eradication of polio worldwide. Members are as committed to digging wells in Africa as they are improving parks in their home communities.

OK, it was Farrakhan… here is a sample:
Some of you think that I’m just somebody who’s got something out for the Jewish people,” Farrakhan said. “You’re stupid. Do you think I would waste my time if I did not think it was important for you to know Satan? My job is to pull the cover off of Satan so that he will never deceive you and the people of the world again.”

I am kinda weired out not even Fox covered.

Man, that whole part about Satan sounds just like half the televangelists.

Did anybody know that Farrakhan is from Chicago and knows people who know Obama? Thus Obama is responsible for everything Farrakhan says. Or some TP BS like that.

I’m sooo jealous! I’ve always coveted one, but could never justify the expense. Heck, about 3-4 years ago I bought Painter just because I always wanted it, yet I’ve NEVER actually created anything with it (just doodled). I had to stop myslef from buying an upgrade recently, heh. I’m much more comfortable in Photoshop & Illustrator.

I have the regular version of Artrage and just bought Poser 7 because it was dirt cheap at TigerDirect ($29! I guess they’re phasing it out). I have a terrible software jones.

There used to be this really cool app called CreatureHouse Expression. It was vector based, but behaved like a paint program. Way cool, but they sold out to Microsoft and the app went away (I think it actually morphed into Silverlight). I still have a free copy that they were giving away after MS bought it.

I still have a free copy that they were giving away after MS bought it.

here’s what you do if you want a cheap cintiq, don’t get a 21ux, get a 15x, you’ll be able to find one on ebay for $300 if you wait for one to show up. I used a 15x for years.

they’re dirt cheap because the 12wx drove them down in price. They’re only 1024x768, don’t use it as your primary monitor, but they rock. I have heard tell about Creaturehouse Expression being pretty cool, never tried it

Huck is symptomatic of what we’re going to see in the next election from the GOP.

Huck is going down in flames right now. Palin’s already just smoke. (and mirrors). The nominee will not be drawn from the top of the loony bin. That didn’t happen last time either. Ron Paul had a great showing in cyberspace and managed to make a few waves in Iowa and NH. Then, nada.

Rep. Anthony Weiner being interviewed by Megyn Kelly. What’s notable is he pushes back against and disrupts the Fox style interview where the interviewer inserts some sort of contrary statement of “Fox Facts” after each answer and then moves on to the next question without allowing for rebuttal (he’s also dripping sarcasm by the end):

Who do you think could win against Obama? I’m not seeing any realistic candidates.

Nobody has any particular chance of winning unless history takes some sort of drastic turn like the one that torpedoed the last glimmering hopes of McCain.

No one observer, apart perhaps from a handful of professionals, is likely to be much of a judge of who might actually win against Obama. (Says the guy who just insisted Palin and Huckabee had no chance.) We all have our own circles, and the nation is a big circle with dynamics we can’t sense from where we sit. And it’s such a long shot anyhow. How to distinguish between X has a 3 percent chance, while Y has a 7 percent chance?

Furthermore, this latest lie by Huckabee won’t sit well. When you lie, you have to stick to statements that might strike the listener as true, and that can’t be outright disproved easily.

The only question is when conservatives are going to wake up to reality.

And the answer is when one of two things happen:

1) The demagogues on their media start preaching reality;
2) They are removed from their media long enough to deprogram.

Cults don’t spontaneously end when the cultists, en masse, suddenly realise ‘Wow, this is all crap’.

Marriage isn’t just religious in nature. Civil marriage is a contract between parties in which certain rights and obligations are shared. People don’t need to get married for some of these things, but marriage tends to make them easier and more clear.

the problem is marriage is essentially incorporating with another person, at its base.

And if you UN incorporate, which we call divorce, well, shit tends to end in tears, so the government has to step in

Also, in America, no, people don’t get to do whatever they want with their kids, like say, arbitrarily leaving with or without them, which is another reason government is involved in marriage

Agreed. It (A Marriage License) is a State sanctioned contactual agreement between two individuals, but, What does their sex (or sexual practices) have anything to do with it?

Hell, Why is the State concerned with what they are doing in the bedroom?

Bottom line, they (the State) only need to be concerned that the “contract” is binding on all signatures involved. Nothing more.

I try to get into TV shows but they run about five episodes and then go on hiatus for 3 months. When they come back they come back on a different night. I can’t keep track. I started to follow them on Hulu but then Hulu started messing up the order (or just dropping) of episodes so there is no longer any continuity. I give up on TV. I’m about to give up on Netflix also. They have no content worth watching on streaming and watching by mail nowadays is so annoying. I watch more new movies on Justin.tv than anywhere, and it is free.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia recognizes the principle of freedom upon which the United States was founded, including the freedoms enshrined under the first amendment of the United States Constitution. During the 20th century, dictators, monarchs, and colonialism gave way to democracy through ballot boxes, pressure from citizens, and negotiated settlements to conflicts. However, freedom and liberty remained out of reach for many. In 1959, the Congress promulgated a Joint Resolution authorizing and requesting the President to declare the third week of July as Captive Nations Week and to continue this annual statement “until such time as freedom and independence shall have been achieved for all the captive nations of the world.”

On Africa…

Every year, the American taxpayers spend more than $6.5 billion on African development. We’re able to provide these resources because our history has yielded a free and prosperous nation. In Africa, however, history has been less kind. Colonialism, the slave trade, poverty, and war have each, by turns, devastated the continent. In recent decades, African nations have faced a new deadly threat, and that’s a pandemic disease that claim millions of lives every year.

— President George W. Bush

419 Gus  Wed, Mar 2, 2011 8:34:52pm

Secondly, the United States and India are working together to support democracy around the world. Like America, India overcame colonialism to establish a free and independent nation. President Franklin Roosevelt supported India in its quest for democracy, and now our two nations are helping other nations realize the same dream.

In the last half-century, the nations of the Americas have overcome enormous challenges: colonialism, and communism, and military dictatorship. The progress we have achieved is the result of tremendous sacrifice and leadership. One such leader was the man who built this beautiful capital as the symbol of Brazilian democracy. President Kubitschek was forced into exile when antidemocratic forces seized control in Brazil. His dream, he said, was to live and die in a free country. At the start of this hopeful new century, the dream of this proud patriot inspires citizens not only in this country, but all around the continent.

As the facts have come in, it looks like the killing of two US airmen in Germany was a long nut jihadi:

2 U.S. airmen shot dead at airport in Germany

FRANKFURT, Germany — A man armed with a handgun attacked a bus carrying U.S. Air Force troops at Frankfurt airport Wednesday, killing two airmen and wounding two others before being taken into custody, authorities said.

Boris Rhein, the top security official in the German state of Hesse where the shooting took place, identified the shooter as a 21-year-old from Kosovo. Family members in Kosovo described the suspect as a devout Muslim, who was born and raised in Germany and worked at the airport.

In Washington, President Barack Obama promised to “spare no effort” in investigating the slayings.

“I’m saddened and I’m outraged by this attack,” he said.

The attack came as the bus sat outside the airport’s Terminal 2, according to Frankfurt police spokesman Manfred Fuellhardt. The bus driver and a passenger were killed, while one airman suffered light injuries and a second suffered serious wounds and was in life-threatening condition, he said.

His family was from Kosovo, so I’m guessing that tomorrow the Stalker Blog will have a thread on how those airmen died because we refused to let the Serbs wipe out all Balkan Muslims. The bigots will use an act of terrorism by a lone nut to justify genocide.

[i hope I’m proven wrong on this, but I don’t think I will be]

I heard that on NPR today. The shocking part to me? The chemicals released (in studies on rats) act like ESTROGEN.

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot (I like this new one)

This has been speculated on for a while now. I guess the BPA was an accidental byproduct of the search for the birth control pill. What it does in humans is still unknown at this point.

The scary part is that things like register receipts are coated with the stuff and it is absorbed thru the skin.

We just have to wait for the NIH studies to be completed and try to avoid plastics with the numbers 2&7 (iirc—but not really sure) in the little recycle triangle code. Or just go green.

Fungus turns Amazonian ants into zombies

Researchers combing the rainforests of Brazil have uncovered four new species of fungi that turns ants into zombies.

Although it is not the first time the fungi has been seen affecting ants, the discovery of four distinct species in close proximity highlights the level of biodiversity in the Amazon.

Their study appears online in the journal PLoS One.

The research, led by Assistant Professor David Hughes of the University of Pennsylvannia, identified and described the parasitic fungus Ophiocordyceps unliateralis living on four species of carpenter ant (Camponotini sp.) in the Zona da Mata region of Brazil.

Ants become infected when they come into contact with spores released by the fungus. Within a week the ant enters a zombie-like state.

“This so-called zombie or brain-manipulating fungus alters the behaviours of the ant host, causing it to die in an exposed position, typically clinging onto and biting the adaxial surface of shrub leaves,” the study authors write.

The fungus then grows out of the head of the ant, releasing spores into the air, which rain down onto unsuspecting ants and the forest floor.

In 2009, Hughes led a team of researchers studying zombie-ants in Indonesia. They found the infected ants consistently attached to leaves 25 centimetres above the ground in an environment with 95 per cent humidity - perfect conditions for the fungus to grow.

In the current study, Hughes and colleagues found each species of fungus was different in size and shape, and adapted to live only in one particular species.

Two of the species of fungus have also adapted to grow secondary spores, doubling their chances of finding a new host.

Quoth the Wiki:

Fraud charge
On September 24, 2009, Quaid and his wife were arrested in Texas for allegedly defrauding an innkeeper, burglary, and conspiracy in California. The arrest stemmed from an earlier incident in which the Quaids had allegedly left a Santa Barbara, California hotel with a balance due of approximately $10,000. Even though they had later paid the entire bill, the two were still arrested on September 24 and released on bail later that evening. The Quaids made arrangements to appear in court in Santa Barbara but failed to do so. On October 29, the Santa Barbara District Attorney’s Office requested bench warrants for their arrest and extradition from Texas.[11] Although subsequent arrest warrants were quashed, after the Quaids failed to appear at court on April 12 and 13, 2010, $40,000 in bail was forfeited and arrest warrants for the couple were issued again on April 14, 2010.[12][13]
The Quaids appeared in court with their attorney Robert Sanger on April 26, 2010 after missing several other court appearances. The Quaids were briefly detained in custody on April 26, 2010 and released after processing. On April 28, 2010, Sanger resolved the case with Senior Deputy District Attorney Arnis Tolks. The case was dismissed against Randy Quaid for lack of evidence. Evi Quaid pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor count of defrauding an innkeeper. She was granted probation for three years. She will also be required to serve 240 hours of community service.[14][15]
[edit]Burglary charge
On September 18, 2010, in Santa Barbara, California, Randy Quaid and his wife faced burglary charges. They were reported as living in a guest house without permission. They claimed that they had owned the property since the 1990s although a representative of the property owner had called the sheriff’s department and produced documents that showed the house as being sold to the current owner in 2007. The previous owner had purchased the property from the Quaids several years earlier. The Quaids are being accused of more than $5,000 worth of damage that is claimed they caused to the guest house.[16]
They were booked for felony residential burglary under section 459 of the California Penal Code (459PC), and misdemeanor entering a non-commercial building without consent (602.5 PC). Evi Quaid was also booked for misdemeanor resisting arrest (148PC). Their bail was set at $50,000 each. On September 19, 2010 they posted bail and were released.[17] TMZ reported that the Quaids claim that the home was wrongfully transferred to a third party by the use of the forged signature of a dead woman named Ronda Quaid in 1992.[18] On October 18, 2010, bench warrants for the Quaids were issued following their failure to appear for a hearing on the burglary charges.[19]
[edit]Refugee status
On October 22, 2010, Randy and Evi Quaid sought protection under the Canadian Immigration and Refugee Protection Act, after being arrested at the US-Canadian border in Vancouver B.C.[20] They have since applied for refugee status on the grounds that they fear for their lives in the United States as numerous actors have died under mysterious circumstances committed by the “Hollywood star whackers”.
[21] They were granted bail on the condition of $10,000 bond pending further Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada hearings.[22] However, due to their inability to deposit the required bond with the court for several days, they remained in custody of the Canada Border Services Agency.[23] They were released on October 27 after the discovery that Evi Quaid is a “prima facie Canadian citizen”.[24][25][26]

We have a lot of plumbing made with it:

Know which products are likely to contain phthalates but do not carry a list of ingredients. Poly-vinyl chloride (PVC) is primarily used in piping and comprises the largest single use of phthalates, especially DEHP. Foamed PVC is usually found in flooring and contains benzylbutylphthalate (BBzP). Other common uses of phthalates include adhesives, caulk, fishing lures, paint, perfumes and pesticides.

Randy and Evi Quaid allowed to stay in Canada

Yeah, that…His wife Evi was granted Canadian citizenship because her dad was a citizen, allowing her to sponsor Randy as a legal immigrant.

Have fun with all that, Canada…you bought a boatload of larceny and crazy with this ;-P

I know. I just get pissed when it seems the idea of any risk is unacceptable.
20/20 hindsight seems to give people a moral highground that IMHO doesn’t exist.

NIH should have been on this a long time ago.

Well, you’ve got potential risk, and then you have actual, quantifiable impacts.

You might think three eyed fish are cute. I don’t.

We have a lot of plumbing made with it:

Not all PVCs have the plasticizers in question…PVC plumbing and siding, for example, AFAIK.

I have to ask —if the plastics were a pre-cursor to testosterone production and not estrogen production, would everyone be as concerned?

As humans are involved, we can’t get it right all the time. We have to take the information we have, weigh the risks as we know them and make a decision.

then the marketing people, lawyers and politicians take that data and do what they do with it.

A few 3-eye fish might be the result and we have to live with that perhaps if it means saving human lives.

Drunk driving or drunk flying is only fun on a computer simulator. The though of either getting killed in accident, killing others, or getting stopped by the cops and having your life turned on its head has been a great detractor. When people invite me over to parties I always ask the same thing, “is it OK if I sleep over?” I refuse to drive after having several drinks.

Never. I barely drank until I was 28/30. And then I was walking, taking a bus or calling a cab. I can count on my hand the times I’ve driven drunk. The one time I did when I was totally wasted I felt guilty for almost a week. I’ve been driven around by drunks people though and that’s a creepy feeling too. I never allow open containers in my car.

And the thing is, as you know, Randy and Charlie get treated with kid gloves. You know what would happen to us if we displayed this kind of behavior? None of them have ever done time. For the rest of us, we’d have done time.
