Ours used to have the pump get plugged by lint and wouldn’t drain. Trying to move the thing so I could tip it to access the pump was a bitch. Water weighs a ton.

Just got the old desk top hooked up. Of course no wireless, so thank Gaia I have a 30 foot ethernet wire to go outside and around to the room with the router. Addicts always find ways.

One office party few years back, one of my bosses was handing around shots (I blame him, btw). I had 2 or 3. My hubby and I are standing around chatting with some coworkers when I got that wave in my stomach and I knew I was going to embarrass the hellouta myself so I grabbed my husband’s arm and said, “We gotta go” and ran him around the pool and out the front door.

Anyhoo, we make it home and I managed to keep myself together until I get to my own bathroom. The next morning, I woke up, opened my eyes, and was staring at the under side of my toilet on a pillow and blanket. My dear husband couldn’t get me off the floor so he made me comfy. That’s love I tell’s ya.
It was also the last time I drank tequila.

FYI to MM, the pocket books was something he copied from the depression era (iirc) he released the green mile in parts - like 8 of them. Each group of chapters would arrive at the store (in my case a freaking CVS drugstore) you’d see the first issue, buy it (it was tiny) read it and wait for the next release. I’d go there like a month later every day waiting till it finally dropped. Then you’d get the next couple of chapters. All the way through till the last installment. It was amazing!

There are tensional faults, where land moves away from each other. You find these at mid-oceanic rifts, where new ocean crust is created and pushes the old crust sideways and in continental features of the same kind, like the African rift zone. These are spreading features, where plates are moving apart. Lots of low level seismic activity and volcanoes.
There are rotational (strike slip) faults where plates are in relative stasis and are simply grinding against each other rotationally (like the North American plate and the Pacific plate from around central Mexico to around the northern border of California). These result in quakes that have a lot of horizontal movement, bout no volcanoes.
Then there are compressional faults, where ocean crust is sliding under continental crust or where continental crust is being compressed against other continental crust. The best example of the latter is the area around New Madrid, Missouri, which is the triple compression point of a peculiar feature. The bottom half of the North American plate is in relative stasis with the Pacific plate. The northern half of the American plate, however, is still torquing to the southwest relative to the Pacific plate. That strain has got to be released somewhere, and southern Missouri is the spot. Hence the very rare occurrence of a mid-continental pressure valve.
The third kind is a traditional compressional fault. Unlike the New Madrid, these are dead common. Oceanic crustal plates subduct underneath continental plates. They are thinner. They have much less mass. They melt in the upper mantle of the earth, They form plumes of much lighter rocks, which dig holes through the continental plate and bust through the surface as flow basalts or volcanoes. This is what happens all across the north and south areas of the east Pacific (Alaska to Oregon, and southern mexico to Tierra del Fuego), where North and South America are torquing southwest and northeast, respectively, and pretty much along the entire expanse of the Asian plate from Kamchatka to New Guinea. lots of volcanoes, lots of quakes.
The Ring of Fire.
Now in Japan, there are two basic vectors in regard to the Pacific and Asian plates. As mentioned before, the Pacific plate is rotating counter clockwise relative to the Continental plates. So there will always be a strike-slip component to their relative movements. The vast majority of the past damaging quakes in Japan (Kobe, Tokyo in 1923) were strike-slip quakes.
This one however was a compressional, dip-slip quake. As the Pacific plate moves west, the Asian plate (Japan) grinds over it. This pulls down the eastern edge of the Asian plate like a really big spring. It also forms what is known as the Japanese trench, where the water gets really deep because the Pacific plate is being forced under Japan. And it’s not local. This is occurring the entire east coast of Japan. The entire country is being prevented from moving to the east by this compression.
Forces build until the compressional fault ruptures. And when it does, the continental plate says “Aaah” and moves in the direction of the subducting plate. In this case, along a rupture zone of over 400 miles, according to the USGS (!!!) Japan, part of that portion of the Asian plate moved 8 feet east. In the meantime the Asian plate, lifted anywhere from 90 to 120 feet, almost instantly. It SNAPPED UP. Causing the tsunami.
Lessons learned:
If you build cities along coastal boundaries where active subduction is occurring offshore, that city will eventually be destroyed by a tsunami.
If you are running nuke plants in an earthquake zone, triple redundancy is insufficient. Deactivate all of your second generation reactors and upgrade them.

There are two towns that are largish that suffered near total destruction.
One of those in Minamisanriku, in Miyagi Prefecture. Some of the early videos were of that area, but not the Sendai airport area videos that most people viewed. There are very many missing persons in the Minamisanriku area.
Up the coast another largish town that was greatly destroyed is Kesennume. There, a wide spread fire destroyed many houses.
Many smaller towns were totally destroyed by tsunamis also.

I don’t know what the death toll will eventually be, but it’s pretty clear that nearly all coastal areas from Aomori (which is at the very northern tip of Honshu) all the way down to Ibaraki prefecture (just north of Tokyo) have lots of damage. And even Hokkaido and Chiba have some damage. That’s over 200 miles of damage.

60yo rescued from sea off Japan’s coast
A Japanese Self-Defence Force destroyer has rescued a 60-year-old man from the sea some 15 kilometres off Fukushima prefecture after a massive tsunami swept coastal regions following a magnitude 8.9 earthquake on Friday.
The man, identified as Hiromitsu Shinkawa from the city of Minamisoma, was spotted floating in sea on a piece of roof after being swept along with his house, the defence ministry said.
The deadly wall of seawater surged as far as two kilometres inland, leaving random debris, vehicles and the ruins of wood houses jutting from the mud.
The rescued man is conscious and in good condition, ministry officials said, adding he was transported to a hospital by helicopter.
“I ran away after learning that the tsunami was coming,” Mr Shinkawa told rescuers, according to Jiji Press.
“But I turned back to pick up something at home when I was washed away. I was rescued while I was hanging to the roof from my house.”

NE Honshu is rather sparsely populated compared to the Kansai region (Osaka, Kobe, Kyoto). I’ve never been up there, but from what I know of it makes it sound like the equivalent of the Maine costal areas here in the US - mostly hamlets based around fishing. Sendai is the last major city going north until one hits Sapporo on Hokkaido.
The thing about Japan is that people have to crowd into the river valleys at the mouths of rivers as the country side is too hilly/mountainous and even agriculture is pretty much abandoned up in the North. So most people end up living, farming, fishing on the coast.

Yep. Looks like the concrete building were the most resistant. Although one still wouldn’t want to be inside one unless you’re at a sufficient height. Such as the one in this photo which shows that the building itself survived but everything in the interior was washed away.

Many years ago I visited Minsk, in Belarus.
There was this enormous pit with gently sloping sides in the middle of which was an Obelisk.
On it was recorded the fate of the Jews of that region, how they were herded up and how many were shot and killed in that huge, football field sized pit.
What was interesting (I was told) was that Obelisk was unique in that it was one of only a few which recoded the death of Jews as opposed to ‘Soviet citizens’.
There was and remains lots of darkness in Eastern Europe.

Americans have been blessed in being removed from those dark events. Fro them, the war is an academic curiosity.
For Europeans, the war is in many ways still very real and still very formative.
A few years ago I was in Munich on business. At around midnight there was a commotion in the street. I looked out my window and saw skinheads marching, shouting ‘Ouslander raus!’ (foreigners out!).
I went down to the lobby of the hotel and with all the other foreign guests watched these drunken miscreants and dysfunctional losers with great amusement.
The night concierge, an older gent, was extremely upset at the marchers- and us who were making light of what was occurring. He kept saying, ‘You don’t understand! This is how it starts! We lived this!”
That was one of the most sobering soliloquies I have ever heard.

I recall being told how many towns in Russia were completely obliterated in the war- towns that were barely on the map and small villages that were on no maps.

And Kesennume was similar size. It’s tsunamis were not quite as high, but there was a lot of fire damage there.
The tsunami at Minamisanrikucho, according to some estimates, could have been as high as 30 meters at peak. The bay is wide mouthed, and then the city is built in a river valley so the water could have piled up even more.

The hiring process was postponed for months because the D.O.J. rejected the original scores provided by the Dayton Civil Service Board, which administers the test.Under the previous requirements, candidates had to get a 66% on part one of the exam and a 72% on part two.
The D.O.J. approved new scoring policy only requires potential police officers to get a 58% and a 63%. That’s the equivalent of an ‘F’ and a ‘D’.
“It becomes a safety issue for the people of our community,” said Dayton Fraternal Order of Police President, Randy Beane. “It becomes a safety issue to have an incompetent officer next to you in a life and death situation.”
“The NAACP does not support individuals failing a test and then having the opportunity to be gainfully employed,” agreed Dayton NAACP President Derrick Foward.

Japan’s nuclear safety agency said on Sunday there was no problem with the cooling process at Tohoku Electric Power Co’s (9506.T) Onagawa nuclear power plant and that a rise in radiation levels there was due to radiation leakage at another plant in a neighbouring prefecture.
The agency said a report from Tohoku Electric shows that cooling systems at all three reactors at the Onagawa complex, which were automatically shut after a massive earthquake and tsunami on Friday, are functioning properly.
That would probably mean more radiation coming from the Fukushima reactor complex.

That’s exactly what the Roi was saying. If they’re unable to circulate the water so that it cools down then reheats, it will simply continue to heat and create steam that will have to be released, or explode.
I’m guessing this was an emergency maneuver just for the reason you say - to give them some time to figure alternatives or get the regular system working again.

Newspaper is assuming that employment tests can be graded with letter grades, like school tests. Not really so.
What I’d like to know - is the difference between a 66% and a 63% one question missed, or ten questions missed?

This one exchanges heat with another system (or more) to generate steam for power, or simply to help keep the reactor cool. The secondary systems’ water is not radioactive and essentially similar to water systems for industrial purposes. The main issue appears that the quake and wave disabled the secondary systems - thus preventing them from taking heat out of the primary system which remained intact. You can shut down the reaction process with the rods, but there is still a lot of latent heat in the pile that you’d want to bleed off.

Written employment tests supposedly predict performance. And they often do, and do it fairly well.
What’s MISSING from many employment tests is a test that measures a person’s fitness for a particular type of job - here, our best tests includes a portion of the test that measures personality aspects for particular things, such as ability to work well with people vs. ability to work well alone, etc. There’s no right or wrong answer on those tests, it simply measures people’s various traits that allow them to work best in certain situations over others. And a person who scores lower than another person on the written portion may very well have a better set of traits for a particular job than a person who scores higher on the written portion. The two things have to be taken together as a whole picture.
Now those things wouldn’t apply necessarily to police officers, but there are traits that would and I’m willing to bet this test doesn’t have that sort of thing built into it.

The lowered test scores might end up being a bad thing.

The Reuters story appears to take for granted the researchers’ claim that they discovered Atlantean “memorial cities” in Spain a couple of years ago, and that this led them to the antediluvian Big Apple itself. Hmmmph. I wouldn’t doubt that there are ruins under some mud flats in Spain but connecting this with the alleged continent of Atlantis is pure fancy.
Speaking of historical woo-woo, the History Channel ran a program yesterday on Pre-Columbian “discoverers” of America. (This excluded the local natives, who presumably knew it was here all along.)
The show itself was a couple of hours long, between HC’s famously long commercial marathons, and covered the subject pretty thoroughly. It went from the probable (Polynesians) to the definite (Vikings) but then used the latter as a springboard into deep woo, the Lost Tribes of Israel.
Oddly, the only thing about which they expressed any real skepticism was the Mormon claim that Lehi voyaged from Oman to the west coast of America in the 7th century BC.

I would not disagree. I am not saying that the story of Lehi’s voyage is credible at all, just that it is no more incredible than various other “Lost Tribe” stories featured in the HC program, stories they chose to take seriously. I do think this is odd.

The Japanese people have been so concerned with building earthquake prepared buildings and had those buildings verify the smart engineering put into them many times over the years, they must have been extremely confident they could weather the worst that sitting on a subduction zone could throw at them.
How disheartening it must be to have their efforts survive the quake only to have the tsunami toss them about like matchsticks. They must be more shocked by the loss of life than we are.

Falcon, the FAMILY released the photos while the government was waffling over it. Usually they arentl released after attacks but its time to stop playing around. They feel very strongly that while we normally don’t trot the bodies out like this, the situation calls for it. Not unsuerprisingly, Youtube and Facebook took them down within 3 hours due to demands from various Palestinian groups. Besides passing out candy and praising the “heroics”, there’s a lot of loud protesting abou plans to build *within certain settlment blocks. Personally I think 1000 units in Itamar might be more appropriate)and insistance that Palestinians NEVER kill children (tell that to the Hatuels, the Mandels, the Ashers, etc, etc., etc. The funeral ended about 3 hours ago. 30,000 people showed up and everyone else sort of glued themselves to the radio. It was broadcast live (well, the eulogies, anyway).
