Unbelievable amount of water.
Unbelievable force.
Incredible and awful.

At about 35 seconds in, there are what appear to be people on bikes and in cars driving on a road in the background that looks like it’s just about to be inundated. Gah.

All the energy in a wave going 200Kms/hr has to go somewhere when it’s forced to slow down.

18 lawhawk  Sun, Mar 13, 2011 3:36:06pm

That’s captivating and mesmerizing video, but sad all at once knowing that many people were dying at that very moment. It’s amazing to watch the water just surge with tremendous ease over the sea wall built to protect the city from this very scenario - but at the same time, note relatively little damage to structures and bridges before the tsunami roared through. That, despite being so close to the epicenter of the quake.

I would be interested to see if there’s video shot before this one - showing the harbor draining as the water is pulled offshore before the tsunami hits and figure that we’ll see some of those before long (just as we saw similar video from Thailand and Indonesia from the SE Asian quake in 2004.

Well, crap. As if Japan doesn’t have enough problems right now.

Volcano in southern Japan erupts

The Japanese weather agency has reported that a volcano in southern Japan began spewing ash and rock even as the country struggled to recover Sunday from the catastrophic earthquake and tsunami.
[…]
Sunday’s eruption, which was the biggest volcanic activity in Shinmoedake in 52 years, caused widespread destruction and panic. The blast could be heard for miles, and shattered windows four miles away, the BBC reported. Hundreds of people fled the area as the volcano spewed debris, including hot ash and rocks, more than 6,000 feet in the air, according to BBC reports.

There will be memorial cities somewhere, with clever hints and cryptic indications of the once great society and it’s amazing machines. And along with these clues, some cyber archeologist will be able to assert from the digital remnants of the internet that they may have found the lost civilizations of earth.

Do the stalkers stalk because they got banned here? Or is it because they feel LGF betrayed them when CJ publicly broke with the right?

I’m guessing it’s some combo of the two; either way, not healthy for anyone.

In a way, it probably makes plenty of sense. It’s a backup generator that is supposed to pump water into the coolant systems. Where else place the generators except next to the pumps that are drawing that water into the system?

Figure that the thinking about the backup generators and their placement is going to change in a major way - bulked up and protected against tsunami - raised above high water marks and then some, etc.

87 The Yankee  Sun, Mar 13, 2011 5:03:20pm

One way of thinking about the reactor failure is that the actual reactor never failed. The back up systems seems to be what failed.

The reactors make the electric that fuels the cooling pumps normally. When the quake happened they wanted to stopped the reaction and use diesel and batteries to keep the pumps going and keep the reactor cool. They are what seemed to have failed.

If they kept the reactor working as normal they wouldn’t be in this situation. Least that is what is what the fact seem to lead to.

I am sure when this all cools down there will be a more thorough investigation.

That went well. With the wind blowing in the kitchen window the smell was manageable. Cleaning the filter went about twice as fast since I didn’t have to run away choking on the stench. I scrubbed the sides of the tank which got it cloudy. The turtles will be happy in a couple of hours once the filtration clears it up.

I handle the fear raised by this sort of thing with bad humor.

So the thought that went through my mind as I watched was Jack Nicholson as The Joker saying, “This town needs an enema.”

I guess it’s better than curling up in a fetal ball.

I definitely come from a family that handles stress with humor.

For some reason, that hit me the wrong way. Put me in a real bad mood.

Do the stalkers stalk because they got banned here? Or is it because they feel LGF betrayed them when CJ publicly broke with the right?

I’m guessing it’s some combo of the two; either way, not healthy for anyone.

It’s both. They feel that Charles “threw away the best of LGF and turned into a left-wing stooge”. Of course, that position is 120 degrees out of sync with reality.

I’d say LGF is closer to the center than it ever was in the Bad Old Days…when a large percentage of your commenters are to the right of Attilla the Hun, any move away from that is a leftward move.

In the case of LGF, not necessarily a bad thing… ;-P

See, the way it is to me, anyhow, is that the goals are the same - fundamental rights of those you mention, taking care of those in need, proper education in all aspects, including science of course, and etc., it’s how we get there that’s the issue. That’s how it’s seemed to me.
