MCGOVERN: Over the past several years, it has become clear that the Fox News channel is wildly biased. They continue to employ a talk show host who called President Obama a racist. They continue to employ several prospective Republican Presidential candidates as “analysts,” giving them hours and hours of free air time. And their parent company has donated millions to GOP-linked groups. My amendment would prohibit federal funds – taxpayer dollars – from being used for advertising on the partisan, political platform of Fox News.
excellent.

Why hasn't it occurred to any good ol' boy Republican that it is offensive for a foreigner - Rupert Murdoch - to be so determinative in US politics? Didn't the Founding Fathers have a - ummm - thing about being controlled by the British?
9 | Gus Thu, Mar 17, 2011 1:56:54pm |
Rep. Rich Nugent (R-Fla.) argued that those watching the House debate on Thursday were likely watching it on C-SPAN, which doesn’t receive federal funding.
“A lot of us like NPR,” he said, later adding: “We’re not trying to harm NPR. We’re actually trying to liberate them from federal tax dollars.”
10 | eastsider Thu, Mar 17, 2011 1:57:56pm |
While I admire the attempt at "equivalence," this is really missing the point. What we need to do is not have a pissing contest to see who can defund more of the other sides' pet projects and political bases.* We need to have everyone take a huge, deep, breath, and realize that defunding a program worth $X00 Million dollars does nothing in the face of a deficit of $X00 billion dollars and a longterm debt of $X Trillion dollars. They're attacking the wrong order of magnitude, and doing it for what are transparently political purposes, and it is really insulting to watch.
*That said, the targeting of NPR, teachers, and unions as political bases with no regard for their societal benefit is personally revolting. I understand for Macchiavelli, but when the "ends" are increased political power, and the "means" are destroying valued institutions, I get a little pissed off.

Flashback, 2007:
The Nevada State Democratic Party is pulling out of a controversial presidential debate scheduled for Aug. 14 in Reno and co-hosted by Fox News, according to a letter released late Friday from state party chairman Tom Collins and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev).The letter said Nevada Democrats had entered into the agreement with Fox, despite strong opposition from Democratic activist groups such as MoveOn.org, as a way of finding "new ways to talk to new people."
But Collins and Reid wrote that comments on Thursday by FOX News Chairman and CEO Roger Ailes, when he jokingly compared Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, the junior senator from Illinois, to Osama bin Laden, "went too far," and prompted Nevada Democrats to end the partnership.
"We cannot, as good Democrats, put our party in a position to defend such comments," the letter said. "In light of his comments, we have concluded that it is not possible to hold a presidential debate that will focus on our candidates and are therefore cancelling our August debate. We take no pleasure in this, but it is the only course of action."
Fox is the Scream Machine for the Right Wing. They shouldn't be treated as a legitimate news entity.

As part of the purgatory that this week of FOX exposure is for me (seriously, holy shit - this is a VA hospital guys, why would you put on the least patriotic, most seditious form of mass media in the Western world all day every day? Do you really hate your own nation that much?), I find myself really quite surprised by the ad content on FOX.
I believe that you can tell a lot about the market segment you belong to by what ads come on during the programs you watch. Marketing is a highly advanced science - if you're seeing a lot of ads for something in particular, you're watching the same stuff that people who buy that thing watch. This disturbs me, frankly, given that every time I watch the tennis I see a ton of Flomax and Cialis ads. At any rate, the ad content on FOX is not quite what I expected. There's surprisingly little in the way of politics - I guess the political advertising occurs during normal programming. There's also very little in the way of commonplace stuff like pharmaceuticals, insurance, and the like. But what there is a ton of are money ads. Gold, gold, gold. "I've heard that a lot of people are investing. How does someone like me buy gold?" Gold, and small-time investment firms. Not the big ones, with nationally recognised names, but ones that have websites that consist of the name of the guy on the ad, and who's also President, CEO, and probably receptionist. Lots and lots and lots of those ads. In other words, places where frightened people will send their money.
A lot of people say FOX are Republican shills, pushing a party line. I'm pretty sure they're not. I'm pretty sure they're just the most blatant form of targeted marketing - find a market segment that is highly emotional, gullible, and easy to frighten. Pander to them by reaffirming their opinions and frightening them some more, and then market stuff to them. It just so happens that the most susceptible market segment in the US is modern American Conservatives, or cultists.
(I did also note, however, that tonight! on the O'Reilly Factor, Bill will tell YOU what you need to know about Japan. And he'll do this by interviewing Lou Dobbs, Glenn Beck and Ann Coulter. No kidding. I cannot imagine a single intelligent or pertinent thing that any of the four of them would have to say about Japan, if they can even find it on a map. However, I would expect that tomorrow, the cultist party line on why everything going on in Japan is Obama's fault will be set. Expect a fresh wave of Obama-hate with a Japanese flavour tomorrow.)

A 1997 study by the Brookhaven National Laboratory on Long Island described a worst-case disaster from uncovered spent fuel in a reactor cooling pool. It estimated 100 quick deaths would occur within a range of 500 miles and 138,000 eventual deaths.[snip]That section of the Brookhaven study focused on boiling water reactors — the kind at the heart of the Japanese crisis.
The threat is considered so severe that at the start of the crisis Friday, immediately after the shattering earthquake, Fukushima plant officials focused their attention on a damaged storage pool for spent nuclear fuel at the No. 2 reactor at Daiichi, said a nuclear executive who requested anonymity because his company is not involved in the emergency response at the reactors and is wary of antagonizing other companies in the industry.
The damage prompted the plant’s management to divert much of the attention and pumping capacity to that pool, the executive added. The shutdown of the other reactors then proceeded badly, and problems began to cascade.
[Link: www.nytimes.com...]
Italics and bolding are mine. Someone please correct me if I'm misreading, but this seems to be indicating that the Unit 2 spent fuel pool was seriously damaged initially by the quake, before the tsunami and subsequent events.

Relatives really are a riot :D It's easier when you realize you don't have to argue with them, and in fact, arguing with them actually is what they want.
None of this is logic or facts that they've been sucked in by, it's pure repetition and all those deeply held and totally insane suspicions confirmed. But it's their identity, right? They're really buoyed by everything Fox News says, it makes them feel good and it means they don't have to think.
So they're all flush with their REPUBLICAN!!! IDENTITY!! and then some schmoe like us who's a little too smart to get their identity from a cable news program, a PAC, or some ex-shock jock talker who saw a market opportunity, we try and argue, and it doesn't work. They WANT that battle. They want to frustrate the smart guy (aka THE LIBURULLZZZZ) for no other reason than they want to. Isn't that how the morons in high school always acted? They don't need a reason, they're just dumb and destructive people. Well, now they're all grown up, and still dumb!
Their rules are different, they're not interested in facts, or political compromise, or really in learning anything, the extremist narrative is in their head, facts are immaterial. And certainly if they're family people, they're too busy with their family to go research, or look anything up, so that reinforces the ignorance as well.
