Randy Newman: I Think It’s Going To Rain Today

Human kindness is overflowing
Music • Views: 28,887
Youtube Video

Broken windows and empty hallways
A pale dead moon in the sky streaked with gray
Human kindness is overflowing
And I think it’s going to rain today

Scarecrows dressed in the latest styles
With frozen smiles to chase love away
Human kindness is overflowing
And I think it’s going to rain today

Lonely, lonely
Tin can at my feet
Think I’ll kick it down the street
That’s the way to treat a friend

Bright before me the signs implore me
To help the needy and show them the way
Human kindness is overflowing
And I think it’s going to rain today

Let it rain, and let the rain wash away insanity.

Where I’m sitting in California there has been a deluge these past few days, thunder and lightening and hail, and the insanity still seems to be going strong.

Good idea. I would love to see that happen. If only it were that easy.

It’s been a lousy Lenten season so far. But then, that’s kind of the point.

Being Jewish I know very little about Lent. I know you give up something until Easter. I hope you do not consider this offensive I hope the rest of your Lenten season goes fast.

Oh, no, not offensive. Lenten season is meant to be contemplative and reconciling your self to God’s will. I usually feel the weight of what might be, or might be better in myself.
Personally, I think you are a peach, Philly!

But back to the topic - this song was written almost 40 years ago. Still one of the greatest lyrics ever written, with a weird unsettling darkness to it. And that bridge section is reminiscent of Aaron Copeland, with those wide open cadences. Amazing.

I had to stay over at my parents’ house last night because the storm was coming in, and getting home seemed impossible. This morning, a fairly big tree near them had come down.

I thought some of those ads were quite ironic, considering that they tended to run contrary to what the topics/discussions were.

His examples?

Dennis Kucinich: Time to impeach Obama over Libya action.

Michael Moore: Obama no better than Bush.

Louis Farrakhan: “Who The Hell Do You Think You Are?”

Andrew Sullivan: Obama now the exact opposite of what I voted for.

The nearest anyone from this list comes to being influential is Moore. And Farrakhan? WTF?

Well, Kucinich is an actual Congressman, so I think that gives him some status.

But all of those are people who would not support any military action, and none of them are real Obama boosters, except maybe Sullivan, who I don’t know much about except that he has a pathological fixation on Sarah Palin’s youngest child.

It’s not even that, I just don’t see it falling off right now. A lot on the far left won’t forgive him, but again, from what I gather even most DKos folks uneasily support this action. Now, the left wing may fall off in the coming days, but it will depend on what happens on the ground in Libya.

Sully’s had some good points now and again, but I’d take his “support” with a grain of a salt. The man was a big Bush booster for awhile, then turned on him when he spoke against gay marriage.

We’ll have to see. Obama can’t count of support from the other side of the aisle like Tony Blair had on Iraq. Sad to say, the current Republican Party in the US has a lot more raw partisanship in it than the UK’s Conservative Party had in it during the last decade.

Is that the meme they’ve chosen to go with? “The Left is abandoning Obama!”? They’ve overplayed that one already, every time he’s gone contrary to one of his campaign promises. Gitmo, Iraq, Bush Tax Cuts, etc.

The president will get support from the majority of the Democrats on the Hill. To be frank, Kucinich and his ilk are a bit of an anomaly much like Ron Paul.

Pelosi Statement Following President Obama’s Remarks on Libya
March 18, 2011

Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today after President Obama delivered remarks on the situation in Libya:

“I commend the President for his leadership and prudence on how our nation will proceed in regards to Libya and work in concert with European and Arab allies to address the crisis.

“The strong action taken by the United Nations and the Arab League should leave no doubt in Qaddafi’s mind that the horrific brutality against his own people will not be tolerated and cannot continue.”

Here’s the Reid statement:

Reid Statement On Libya
March 18, 2011

Washington, DC—Nevada Senator Harry Reid released the following statement today regarding the situation in Libya:

“Like many Americans, I have watched the atrocities perpetrated by Moammar Qaddafi in horror, and that’s why I am pleased with the resolution passed by the United Nations. It was an important step for the international community to take action to prevent Qaddafi from perpetrating further atrocities. And I support the President’s decision to work with our allies to enforce a no-fly zone and take other actions to protect Libyan civilians. Today the President presented Qaddafi with a clear choice and outlined the very serious consequences of ignoring the demands of the people of Libya and the international community.

“I believe the broad multilateral approach the President laid out will greatly improve the effectiveness of our efforts. The coalition we are working with includes not just our European allies, but also members of the Arab League. Qaddafi has lost legitimacy and it is only a matter of time before he is out of power. Together with our allies, we should work to ensure that Qaddafi’s transition out of power is swift, and that the people of Libya do not suffer any more than they already have.”

Statement by Speaker Boehner on Libya
WASHINGTON, DC (Mar 20)

House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) issued the following statement on the situation in Libya:

“The United States has a moral obligation to stand with those who seek freedom from oppression and self-government for their people. It’s unacceptable and outrageous for Qadhafi to attack his own people, and the violence must stop.

“The President is the commander-in-chief, but the Administration has a responsibility to define for the American people, the Congress, and our troops what the mission in Libya is, better explain what America’s role is in achieving that mission, and make clear how it will be accomplished. Before any further military commitments are made, the Administration must do a better job of communicating to the American people and to Congress about our mission in Libya and how it will be achieved.”

Boxer Statement on United Nations Security Council Resolution Imposing a No-Fly Zone in Libya

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA), a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, today released the following statement after the United Nations Security Council passed Resolution 1973, which authorizes a no-fly zone and other actions to protect civilians in Libya:

“The international community has an obligation to prevent the slaughter of Libyan civilians by Moammar Gaddafi’s forces and a massive humanitarian crisis. It is essential that the Arab League – which called for international action – remains a full and supportive partner in the difficult days ahead.”

The weather has me really bummed out. I think we’re in for a repeat of last year’s terribly cold and rainy summer here. I’m taking no chances with the garden I’m not even going to try any direct planting outdoors. Everything is going to be started indoors and I’m not even going to transplant them out until mid May or so. What a pain in the ass.

Last year the weather was so bad I didn’t get a single ripe tomato out of the garden, I still had heat on in the house the first week of July.
This year I’m leaving up all my winter row covers for most of the summer if need be.

We get tons of light and heat, but I have to use mostly chlorinated water in Israel-style drippers for drought. All our tomatoes and squash croaked dramatically last year. The asparagus bed is already producing more than we eat—it gets watered by the airconditioner condenser. Yesterday we had grilled asparagus 20 minutes and 3 feet from the bed.

Ours was a family gift, and does a good job for its size. I wouldn’t buy the gas version—we just don’t have enough work for it. I spend more time each year on maintenance than on tilling. There is a new line-cord electric version that looks interesting.

We have asparagus coming to it’s third year. Tasted some last year, but I’m still not sure how many one can take and still get a good crop the year after.

Our bed is pushing ten years old, and we’ve already planted its replacement. Now that it’s mature we can start taking now and continue for another couple months—climate determines, I guess. By June, we let it grow, making a 6 ft high shade wall along our screen porch. The June-September photosynthesis seems to be keeping it nourished. (It gets full Alabama sun for half each day.)

I transplanted basil in my “open” window box today. Cleaned out the jalapeno pepper plants to free up space and am settling for herbs essentially. Currently have rosemary, parsley, catnip, and now basil. Plus a little more space to get something else in. Though I’m favoring another basil variety since I like cooking with the different types.

Yeah, we let it go after 1 June, though we might be conservative. Our early Spring gives us a good crop. After the wife freezes what she wants, we foist it on the neighbors. (If you let it sit a few minutes in ordinary Italian salad dressing, it is great to put directly on the grill for about 5 min.)

Spices are probably the best bang for the buck, and no comparison to the dry stuff for cooking. A rosemary plant in some garden corner will keep you for years.

While in India yesterday Mrs Palin suggested China is preparing itself to launch a military offensive.

She questioned why the Far East country was stockpiling ballistic missiles, submarines and ‘new-age, ultramodern aircraft’ seemed unjustified when it did not face an outside threat.

‘What’s with the military buildup?’ She said. ‘China’s military growth can’t just be for defensive purposes.’

Speaking to an audience of business leaders and socialites on a rare foreign trip to India, she added she has not ruled out a Presidential run in 2012 and stressed the importance of shared free-market values.

Why is the GOP always pushing stockpiling ballistic missiles and ‘new-age, ultramodern aircraft’?

GOLD!!!1
Isn’t gold heavy?
Doesn’t it sometimes come in boxes?
Maybe that’s why they can pay black mothers 9 thousand dollars more than their present wages, and pay their son’s tuition at private schools.
How did those sneaky Muslims get all that gold that rightfully should be in the hands of Glenn Beck’s followers.

///

Simple:

They used the money they got from the oil we were forced to buy from Muslims after the liberals refused to expand Alaska oil drilling like Sarah Palin wanted. DRILL, BABY, DRILL!!!11

A Russian friend tells me that when she was a little girl in the Soviet Union, she read a lot of children’s books from the U.S. to improve her English, and everyone was always eating peanut butter sandwiches. When they moved to the United States, she and her sister prevailed on their mother to buy a jar of peanut butter. They hated it.

You may have to grow up with it—although I’ve had African friends tell me they love it, so maybe growing up with peanuts is sufficient.

So what should one do with it?

Make a small pile on it with your plate. Take a big spoon of lomi salmon and put it in the middle of the pile of poi. Spoon it up getting lomi and poi and eat together.

The salty fishy flavor is balanced out with the tangy starchiness of the poi. They work together, especially if you’re eating some fish and papaya.

Just don’t eat it plain. It’s like eating a baked potato plain, nobody would ever thing of doing it.

People have strong feelings about condiments. Anyone remember when Malkin was freaking out about the Obama’s tuna sandwiches? The gherkins and the Grey Poupon?

Probably me too. I don’t want to wait.

Only so much money in the entertainment budget. We saw Battle: LA last week so it will be a few more weeks before we go to another one.

They just found two people alive in the rubble after all these days.

So cool.

Their families must be beside themselves with relief.

I’m always torn when I hear these stories. On the one hand, it’s so wonderful that help finally came. Then I imagine being down there, alive, and not knowing if they would find you, and I get all sad and claustrophobic.

Do you ever go into the fridge and the French mustard has been pushed over?

Only if the brown German mustard was nearby…

I have an overnight shift tonight, and then off until Friday. I’ll probably head downhill during the week and see it.

My wife cannot understand why I have 4 different kinds of mustards.

“This is for roast beef, this is for turkey, this is for hot dogs, this if for pastrami.”

Whats so far about that?

I go with 2-3 kinds of mustards…Grey Poupon (or the store-brand equivalent dijon) for ham, turkey, and roast beef sandwiches, spicy brown for hot dogs and brats (and White Castles), and a good yellow for everything else.

If there’s none close to you, check the local grocery to see if they have the frozen heat-and-eat White Castles…it’s not quite the same as getting them fresh, but it’ll do in a pinch.

That’s what I was fixing to say…I’d kill to try an In-N-Out burger, but alas, we don’t have them out here in TN. We do have Five Guys, which is very good (especially the fries…OMGWTFBBQ!!!), but I’ve heard they compare well to In-N-Out.

And of course, we have San Diego’s contribution to fast food, Jack In the Box (love the bacon cheddar potato wedges and the eggrolls *drool*).

Yea….. they go back and forth as the best burgers of the year. In N’ Out has terrible fries in my opinion…… McDondald’s makes the best.

Bacon Ultimate Cheeseburger! and 50 cent tacos …….. Jack In the Box is headquartered here. Ray Kroc was from here too, he owned the Padres. Rubios also…. but they make a crap fish taco.

JITB’s burge are meh to me, but I did like the ciabatta burgers…liked the bread and special sauce they used, but they got rid of the single ciabatta burger I liked. Like their fish sandwich, onion rings, and shakes, though…

I’ve heard tell of Five Guys.

Five Guys is great….fresh, made to order, and pretty damn tasty. The fries are the bomb…fresh-cut (they keep huge bags of potatoes grown for them stacked out on the restaurant floor), fried in peanut oil, made fresh, and they give you plenty. I like mine with the Cajun seasoning they have…really fucking good.

My usual Five Guys order is a double hamburger with A-1 and grilled onions and a regular Cajun fry (a regular fry is enough for 2 people)…damn tasty.

It’s authentic for sure….and tasty….. but the adobada is illegal here on the spit unless it’s fully cooked which kind of defeats the purpose.

A great Newman tune, and a mention of Aaron Copland. Thanks, Charles, for a really pleasant Monday morning find!
