Tech Note: Most-Tweeted Articles and LGF Pages

New feature of the day
LGF • Views: 27,576

I’d like to draw your attention to our left sidebar, where you’ll see two new additions to the list of “drop-down” links: “Tweeted Articles,” and “Tweeted Pages.”

These new drop-down lists show you the most-tweeted (in other words, posted on Twitter) LGF front page articles and user-submitted LGF Pages, in the last 7 days. I can already see that LGF Pages have been getting increasingly noticed on Twitter; congrats to the authors, and keep up the great posts!

Also, another tech note that doesn’t affect anything you see on LGF, but does speed up page loading: the “retweet” counters you see at the upper right of each post (next to the blue Twitter button) are now cached at 90-second intervals, instead of making calls on every page load to the bit.ly API — which can take some time. Caching the results makes pages finish loading faster, and is also less demanding on the bit.ly API, which should make them happy.

I’ve even had some non-bots and non-LGF people start to follow me. Wahoo.

Last week I had at least two dozen bots suddenly follow me, with names like Tina_Stephenson, Theresa_Gray, Eugene_Evans, Albert_Owens, etc., all common first/last names separated by underscores, all with 200-500 followers themselves. The bots’ own Twitter feeds consisted of retweets of other people’s posts mixed with random quotes and dumb sayings — all of them with an identical flavor, but not identical quotes.

Something weird going on there, because there was no obvious spamming. I almost suspect someone was testing one of those “persona management” systems.

3 elizajane  Mon, Mar 21, 2011 3:05:53pm

There are persona management systems?

This explains much. I can think of some people who must use the services of such systems. A number of them are potential Republican presidential candidates.

“Which persona would you like to use today, sir?”
“Well, it seems like a kind of Christian-values-anti-interventionist day. Do we have a persona for that?”
“But of course. We will just whisk away that socially-moderate-deficit-hawk persona from yesterday and put it on ice until the next time you need it.”

Bizarre. I wonder if people actually trust those kind of fake ‘people’, though. It’d be an interesting thing to test, academically.

There’s a lot of good classic rock songs that metal bands do, so many of them (well, at least the bands I like in metal) tend to have a big classic rock/blues background so it works well

Pawlenty has a reputation as a “moderate”. The GOP base doesn’t like him that much. Therefore he can’t win unless he does some extra-special effort to appeal to the radical right.

Watch him run to the fringes and try to get the wingnuts on his side in the next couple months.

„Libyan sailors! Leave your ship immediately! Leave your … and return to your family or your home. … forces of violating at United National resolution … the end of … in your country. For your own safety: Leave your ship immediately! Do not attempt to jam [?] transmission.”

I linked to an Al Jazera report earlier that a bombed convoy of a few dozen vehicles found only 4-5 bodies but lots of shredded uniforms without blood. Indicating that the soldiers (or at least the smart ones)took off their uniforms and fled before the attack.
Remember all those human shields at Q’daffy’s compound? We bombed it last night and even the Libyan didn’t report any casualties. I suspect we’re giving people warnings before we bomb them which is very polite of us.

It does seem odd but maybe it’s meant to be an open secret - type thing. We say “no boots on the ground” but I think most people assume that isn’t really true. Just like making statements about not removing Q’Daffy when most people assume is the whole point of the operation.

CNN correspondent Nic Robertson has a bone or two to pick with Fox News, which reported today that he and other journalists were used by the Libyan Ministry of Information as human shields, in a successful bid to block a coming, second attack on a compound in Tripoli, supposedly controlled by Qaddafi.

“[T]his allegation is outrageous and it’s absolutely hypocritical. When you come to somewhere like Libya, you expect lies and deceit from a dictatorship here,” Robertson told Wolf Blitzer. “You don’t expect it from the other journalists.”

just when I was outgrowing plastic models, along came HO cars, then the larger 1/24th stuff…racing!

I completely missed those. The only HO(I think) I had was a ’40s vintage train set. I went from plastic models, skipped a few years and went into small block Chevys.

I did play with RC cars when my grandson got old enough to appreciate them.

I got a ton of the old HO scale model tanks. Probably had a few hundred. I got lucky at a swap meet. It does seem odd but maybe it’s meant to be an open secret - type thing. We say “no boots on the ground” but I think most people assume that isn’t really true. Just like making statements about not removing Q’Daffy when most people assume is the whole point of the operation.

“No boots on the ground” has always meant to me that no dedicated ground combat forces would be sent in. That still leaves a ton of leeway in terms of special forces, support and advisory assets.

It does make sense in a way. The deserting soldiers aren’t very likely to report back to duty and it helps with public relations to keep the death toll as low as possible even for the enemy. Modern warfare ain’t what it used to be.

Something weird going on there, because there was no obvious spamming. I almost suspect someone was testing one of those “persona management” systems.

I just noticed this in the left column:
Twitter Finishes Massive Infrastructure Migration

The overhaul amounted to Twitter’s “most significant engineering challenge” and is expected to have a significantly positive impact, ensuring that the company can “stay abreast of our capacity needs; give users and developers greater reliability; and, allow for new product offerings,” the blog posting reads.

If the infrastructure upgrade meets its expectations, it will be a major improvement for Twitter, whose system infrastructure has routinely struggled to keep up with the site’s meteoric user growth.

So maybe they are merely “stress-testing” their new stuff.

I would think they would do what they did in Afghanistan back in 2001/2002 with the Northern Alliance: have a B-52 circling over head loaded with GPS-aimed bombs and a couple of guys on the ground who pick the spots on the map. I also came upon a singer named “Little Boots” today in all this hyperlinking. Geeessshhhh… when I start stumbling on all this stuff, I suddenly realize how far behind in the music scene I’ve become.

I’m still sitting at my keyboard playing with Rick Wakeman riffs, and then today I find all these “instruments” hardware and software based, creating sequences by using grids, circles and all sorts of visual geometry combined with synth like tones.

Picked up an app called “Soundgrid” for my Touch. A 16x16 grid, place notes on them, link up to 8 grids together, you got a song, visually constructed… not a keyboard… grids, flashing and pulsing lights and a beat… neat.

Well, you just mentioned the biggest reason I would think of shelling out for a Ipad. There are so many musical instrument apps available that turns it into everything from a Hammond organ, Moog synth, guitar and so on, you can have a whole collection of some of the best instruments in the world, all on something the size of a large magazine.

We all get older, sad as it is. But it isn’t too bad as long as we don’t become ossified along with the age. Music is a great way to stay mentally flexible.

We should set up an LGF band. Someone start with a short riff, pass it to someone else who can add something to it and then pass it on. There must be 20 or so regulars who can add something to it.

All talking heads and commentators are all over Obama and Libya- “What is the end game?” as if we have all the answer stoday.

From what has been said by Pres. Obama, his generals and the allies, it seems our end game is a timely exit after the “Shock And Huh?” air campaign is done. We let the allies play the end game along with the UN, we just provide air support, drones and keep our major focus on Afghanistan and getting out of Iraq.

Looks like a sufficient end game to me. re: #146 SanFranciscoZionist

Frankly, if there is ever a point when the IDF turns it’s anti-aircraft guns on unarmed protesters to the point that you need vans to clean up the bodies, I would support a similar action. I doubt anyone in the IDF is crazy enough to do it, even if the Israeli government ever gets crazy enough to order, which they aren’t.

Operation cast lead killed anywhere from 1000 to 1500 people over a twenty two day period. Many of them armed combatants. In contrast I’ve heard reports of up to 8,000 dead since 2/17, the vast majority of whom were unarmed protesters. I expect that number to rise.

That’s not the point though. The point is supposed to be that you scare people to death, because you’ve already given them the idea that Obama really hates Israel—a talking point that began before he was actually in office.

If I’m interpreting this correctly he was told to make statements supporting action in Libya. His mysterious friend “Bert” (his true self) thinks that it’s a plot to destabilize Europe so the Islamists and leftists can start overthrowing European governments.
I’m just guessing, he’s hard to interpret.

Fox got the memo that Republicans mostly support the action in Libya (in higher than Democrats, no less) and is pivoting away from the more-extreme wingnut positions. Hopefully, this will isolate and purge a few of the worst of the loons. I know I keep wishing for that, but I still have hope.

I get that, and Gaffey is a hack whose logic presupposes a unified pan arab operation backed up by an actively anti-Israel rest of the world. He’s off playing with toy soldiers in the corner of the room rather than joining in the debate. But his piece has a nugget of wisdom in it, namely the question “what does resolution 1973 mean for Israel?”

I think it’s a non-trivial question. Certainly the scenario he lays out is bunk, but if Israel ever does something like cast lead again, then the Arab league is going to bring up res. 1973 in a heartbeat.

CNN Correspondent Goes Ballistic Over Fox News Libya/Human Shield Report (VIDEO)

[Link: tpmdc.talkingpointsmemo.com…]

Interesting.

That’s interesting. Robertson can go ballistic, sitting in Tripoli going to a bombing site. How the heck does he know what the Brits have told Jennifer Griffin and what is going on in the attack from those in charge?

I used to have some respect for him, but now he sounds like a pathetic whiner that might not realize he was used. Where does the truth lie…he’s being handled by Gaddaffi’s people and she’s getting info from the Brits doing the bombing. Go figure.

Not to say I trust anything we are told from govt., but seriously, trusting Gaddaffi w/ his hideous, murderous track record?

re: #215 thefarmer

From the article:

Fox claims their own correspondent, Steve Harrigan, declined to accept the invitation from the Libyans for fear of being used as a propaganda tool, and perhaps a human shield. But Robertson claims Fox did indeed send an employee on the trip — not a regular news guy — and that Harrigan has been asleep on the job since hostilities began.
