Pastor Hagee’s Rapture Novel Goes Hollywood

Crazed fundamentalist End Times paranoia with special FX
Religion • Views: 34,134

Coming soon to a theater near you: the film adaptation of Pastor John Hagee’s best-selling End Times novel, “Jerusalem Countdown.”

Yes, really.

Featuring Stacy Keach and Lee Majors, who have discovered the elephant’s graveyard of filmmaking.

Youtube Video

Looks like good clean CGI fun — except that the intended audience actually believes this is going to happen in the real world.

Yeah, Hollywood's got the money to make this, meanwhile the big-screen adaptation of World War Z languishes due to lack of funds.

I heard a lot of Islamaphobic dialogue there. Seriously, if one were to have been worried about "the end of the world" we just went through that with the Cold War and the Soviet Union. Anyway, lots of winger pablum with this B-movie.

There was actually a pretty cool RPG in the early 90s called "The End." The basis was that the rapture occurred, God had closed the door to Heaven, and the character's were all the survivors.

32 darthstar  Sun, Mar 27, 2011 7:21:29pm

What's a "a converted Israeli Mossad Agent"? Converted from what?

Synopsis: With the Middle East in turmoil, Israelʼs preeminent Ally is thrust into an impending war— America is now the target as the battle for Jerusalem begins. Adapted from the Best Selling Book by Pastor John Hagee, JERUSALEM COUNTDOWN highlights the reality of an inevitable conflict between Israel and Islam. When nuclear weapons are smuggled into America, Senior FBI Agent, Shane Daughtry (David A.R White) is faced with an impossible task—find them before they are detonated. The clock is ticking and the only people who can help are a washed up arms dealer (Lee Majors), a converted Israeli Mossad Agent (Stacy Keach) and a by- the-book CIA Deputy Director played by Randy Travis. Nuclear holocaust on American soil threatens global stability and the impending destruction of the world is coming to fruition, in this film of international terror and suspense. Also featuring Nick Jameson, Jaci Velasquez, Marco Khan, Carey Scott, and Anna Zielinski.

The prelude to Armageddon has begun…

So you don't think Tara Reid fit the bill as a noted archaeologist/gun toting adventurer?

I had to look that up, and found this review:

...this pondering all stopped once I concluded that director Uwe ("House of the Dead") Boll must have been drunk during the entire filming and editing process. Either that or the German doesn't speak any English at all and was communicating everything to cast and crew using hand signals. It's also possible that the script was in German, although I now am convinced that Tara Reid is fluent in seven different languages and can also communicate with deaf people, so I think she should have been able to translate or at least figure out most of the Latin root words and make an educated guess about the overall meaning.

There was also this incredibly interesting nugget of wisdom from Carnby (or some other character -- who cares?): "Fear is what protects you from the things you don't believe in." Trying to figure that out kept me going for like a couple of hours and the movie is only 90 minutes long.

Wouldn't tbat be more Peter King's interest since he is the one investigating the "Islamization of America." The hilarious thing to me about those who fear Sharia are those who live in areas with very little Muslims. As someone I know pointed out, even if American Muslims wanted to do sharia, it would never happen. Come on, they think we're going to give up our beer and sausages without a fight. 131 freetoken  Sun, Mar 27, 2011 8:03:29pm

The dispensationalists' apocalyptic fantasies arose in the early 20th century, as American Christianity became less and less "Reformed" and more emotionally based. It came along as part of the rise of what we think of today as "fundamentalism" - a movement to reject critical (academic) analysis of the Bible and various doctrines.

Part of it was also anti-Catholicism, but that has faded over the years.

Ultimately it (dispensational apocalypticism) is nothing more than an escapist fantasy, one engaged in by many over the centuries by those who want to escape their situation.

It's just one more nail in the GOP coffin when one realizes that the leading candidates for the GOP nomination believe this stuff.

Since you raise the point, maybe it's not technically "bigotry" but it's damn close. It's actually supremacist. Christians are "perfect" and Jews aren't. In Coulter's mind wishing for them to abandon their religion and adopt her's will save them from eternal damnation and hell fire and is thusly considered a good deed in her warped mind.

Maher likes to think he's "out there" on the spectrum, but he's a run of the mill libertarian/left. Ann is all about freedom too - as long as it's the freedom to do what a republican president tells you, when they tell you to do it.

It comes under the category that you shouldn't express every belief that pops into your head. But that's Coulter's schtick, I guess.

189 HappyBenghazi  Sun, Mar 27, 2011 8:23:15pm

I think Coulter must be a really miserable person. I mean you have to be to if you think the way to riches is to make offensive statements about people because you don't like their politics. That's on a personal level. If this movie is a hit piece on Islam or Judaism, that would be bad.

I don't mean that support should be rejected. Support is support even if they are doing it because of some other motive.

Christian fundamentalism has run amok within the Republican party though. That they see Israel as a way to hasten the apocalypse is something that we (Americans) should confront. Right along with all the other fundamentalist BS.

Just because Palestinians openly hate Jews doesn't mean that we have to be ok with Republicans secretly hating Jews. It could lead to bad things like encouraging Israel to make a militarily bad decision, hoping to spark an end-times type conflict. True friends tell each other the truth, even if the truth is "I think this is a bad idea".

Friz Freleng's cartoons always felt hokey to me. By far my least favorite. Chuck Jones and Tex Avery...now there are gods of the cartoon world.

It's interesting to speculate on what might have happened had Tex Avery not left Warner Brothers.

From the movie trailer: "We're talking about the destruction of the United States of America".

Yes, we are. We're talking about the Christian right wanting to scare Americans into participating in the willful destruction of America as we know it, and replacing it with with some God-awful Christian theocracy that could very well end up making sharia look like child's play.

Yea... but I just got up, I have my usual overnight shift coming up, still do that every Sat./Sun. nights. And then during the week I have to cover about 10-15 more hours doing days or evenings... even after a year, I'm still low man on the seniority list, so I have to fill in those schedule holes. Other employees get to "suggest" what hours they would like to work, depending on their seniority, I don't get to suggest shit.

But it's a job. (by the way, a job I got myself, no fucking handout from the state or federal government).

Oh, I agree that B definitely applies. But these guys hate non-christians so much that if they believe they can achieve the apocalypse AND hurt Muslims and Jews in the process I doubt they'd pass up the chance.

Hmm... I'm neither Jewish nor Israeli, but if I were either I imagine that I would find the fundamentalist Christian view of my homeland as the stopwatch for their personal apocalyptic fantasies to be both hurtful and offensive.

Some examples of evangelical denominations are: Assemblies of God, Southern Baptists, Independent Baptists, Black Protestants, African Methodist Episcopal, African Methodist Episcopal Zion; Church of Christ, Churches of God in Christ, Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod, National Baptist Church, National Progressive Baptist Church, Nondenominational, Pentecostal denominations, and the Presbyterian Church in America. 1 Many theologians would also include as evangelicals the conservative members and reform movements within such mainline denominations as the Episcopal Church, USA, the Presbyterian Church (USA), and the United Methodist Church.

But lets just group them all as evangelical nutters, its simpler that way.

And do you know how many of the congregants in these assemblies are Democrats and minorities, the same people who were partially responsible for electing President Obama? These church going evangelical Democrats believe in the second coming, the rapture, creationism and the whole boat... yet we mock these doctrines.

Granted, many conservative evangelicals make a more public face about their beliefs, tending to weave them into a world view that spans their social and political ideologies, but bottom line, when you mock the doctrines, the thoughts, the scriptures, you're not just mocking the conservatives.

But of course, that doesn't matter, not if someone needs to make a point.... when someone is intent on making a point, everyone be damned, step on any toes you want to accomplish your goal.

CuriousLurker... you see, these doctrines and ideologies have been around as long as this country has, in one theological form or another. These ideologies are similar to the thoughts about religion and state that were an active part of the debate before 1776.

And guess what, the founding fathers put this document together, and this document has been added to and strengthened over the years, and it has managed to keep a relativity decent separation between the various theologies and the state. And honestly, you need to go look back in our last 200 years of history and read up on some of the many evangelical and millennial movements that we have had.

The thing is, it's not about the religion of some particular political group. People of all political groups can have superstitious/stupid/hateful/etc ideas.

The point is that I support the right of everyone to believe whatever they like and to practice their religion in any way they see fit as long as it doesn't impact my own freedom. But when you put your beliefs out into the open and try to convince others that you are right, start making it a litmus test for office, or codify it in new laws and education policy - then I will definitely confront that.

This isn't about democrats vs republicans, as much as some might want to see it that way.

I think the most important thing to do is to champion the separation of church and state and defend it against people who make outrageous claims about it. Some of the best advocates and supporters of church and state seperation are religious people themselves sometimes.

The actions of Republicans has been to introduce a lot of religious laws about creationism, anti-abortion, etc. That's the "fruit" of their labors. So if I am to judge people by their fruit, I judge them rotten.

You had stated the following:
Do you honestly think a republican, or democrat, could step up right now and say "I'm an atheist/agnostic" and expect to still have a chance at getting elected?

Honestly, I justed wanted to know whether in the USA today, is it really true that no one could get re elected if they said they were atheist or agnostic.

If the feeling is that its true, I would be surprised, I still believed it to be a fringe majority that would vote based on extreme religious beliefs.

I didn't understand the nature of your question the first time, sorry.

I do believe that it would be hard or impossible for an avowed atheist to be elected to office, either as a Republican or Democrat. Though, IMO, more so for a Republican currently. I believe that Rep. Stark only came out because his solidified position meant it wouldn't hurt him too much. But in the past there were plenty of examples of politicians losing support because they are atheists or suspected atheists. Howard Dean lost some support when he didn't express a religious belief correctly and people suspected him of atheism - and that was just the suspicion, despite his objections.

That is a sad state of affairs.
The Christian right are a loud voice thats for sure, well funded too.

I have always believed that the supreme court would understand the intent of the first amendment, and as loud as the Christian right scream it wouldn't have helped them. Time will tell I guess, I would agree that they are more powerful within the right wing of politics.

as an atheist, i find it difficult to imagine running for office and standing up for the atheist's creed that it's our duty and challenge to live a moral and compassionate life in a meaningless, cruel, and uncaring universe

in a political climate where to stand up for the compassion, humility, and charity of jesus is liable to get you labelled anti-christian and a liberal communist fascist, an atheist doesn't stand a chance

Atheism is accelerating rather quickly in the USA. That being said with regards to politics it's not a matter of atheism or secularism. Although typically an atheist has a good eye for atheism. But what I mean is that what should concern most atheists are the same things that concern people of faith. So an atheist won't stand on the podium talking atheism but about the economy, education, defense, social issues, etc.

I also think there are different levels of faith.

Childhood faith, g-d is like Santa Claus. And is presented as such to children (God, the Father & Jesus as the Good Shepherd). As I matured, I realized that that such literal explanations didn't fit reality and searched for something that worked for me.

I think there are still a lot of adults who think they have to believe in the childhood version in order to please --what I don't know, god, or the pastor or their parents.

I have also found that the RC Church is big enough for all versions--mostly. Which is something I wouldn't have believed as a young adult. I was most hostile towards religion and specifically the Church. I'm not so hostile anymore, but they still don't get my money.

Isn't "In God We Trust" just another way of talking about the social contract inherent in the use of money.

It's easier to to convey the concept in simple terms, than write a whole scholarly paper on each dollar bill.

Evidence is mounting that the whole process of dealing with the Fuk-1 problem is, well, Fuk'd:

TEPCO president fell sick amid troubles at its nuke plant

Masataka Shimizu, president of Tokyo Electric Power Co., which operates the crisis-hit Fukushima nuclear plant, fell sick March 16 and took some days off from the liaison office between the government and the utility firm, TEPCO officials said Sunday.

While Shimizu was away from the office set up at the firm's headquarters, he collected information and issued instructions from a different room of the headquarters building to address the troubles at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power station hit by the March 11 quake and subsequent tsunami, the officials said. He has already recovered and come back to work at the liaison office, they said.

A TEPCO spokesperson declined to elaborate on his health condition, but said he did not fall over or need to be hooked up to an intravenous drip.

Shimizu has not appeared in public since attending a press conference on March 13, two days after the catastrophe that wreaked havoc on northeastern and eastern Japan.

For those who don't remember, shortly after it became apparent that Fuk-1 was in real trouble the Japanese PM got pissed at TEPCO for so poorly handling information flow that the PM himself set up office at TEPCO to coordinate with the TEPCO head.

Now we find out that the head of TEPCO decided to call in sick... but still issue orders from his secret bunker elsewhere.

I've tried to rationalize it sometimes. In God We Trust means that mankind trusts God or a moral standard which is still a human construct. So when I read In God We Trust I just see it as In Man We Trust. The average American doesn't look into the Bible for guiding their every move. And the government generally looks at the USC.

How is this fair?

Wow. According to what you wrote we're already in rapture. ;)

re: #382 Gus 802

I've tried to rationalize it sometimes. In God We Trust means that mankind trusts God or a moral standard which is still a human construct. So when I read In God We Trust I just see it as In Man We Trust. The average American doesn't look into the Bible for guiding their every move. And the government generally looks at the USC.

In "Man we Trust" I think would cause problems. You know how people are --what about women, children, black-eyed peas? We have to have a word for the "higher standard" we like to use to guide ourselves.

the "Constitution" isn't a bad idea, but it is still constructed by man.

For me the word "G-d" has just become a euphemism for "higher power" call it nature or whatever.

Maybe that is the point. Those that believe in the Rapture seem to have a concept of G-d as the benevolent slave-owner. Thus, only those who still live like slaves would be saved.

Well, to be fair, a desire for others to be converted isn't bigotry. It's simply saying you think you are more right than they are.

You know, I have a lot of evangelical friends who really would be thrilled to pieces if I found Jesus, and I'm OK with that. We have a working understanding about it.

However, there are good and bad ways of talking about this, and Ann didn't find a good one.

Also, I imagine she'd be eternally pissed off if anyone ever tried to convert her to anything, even very indirectly.

Had to come back in long enough to comment on this since I didn't see it earlier.

You're absolutely right, SFZ, on all counts (as usual). If the part about thinking "you are more right than they are" remained just a thought—or even a diplomatically worded discussion—there probably would never have been any major religious conflicts.

And with that, I'll reiterate & emphasize my longstanding profile quote and take my scaly backside off to visit Mr. Sandman:

The world is divided into people who think they are right.

I agree with this. Without religion people would just find something else to rationalize all this stuff. I think, for example, most of these anti-gay folks would still be anti-gay without religion - they just twist some part of their religion around to match their bigotry and without it they'd find something else.

Some animals are more equal than others. . .

It starts with the evil of objectifying humans. Once something starts separating people into those that count and those that don't, they stop being Christians IMHO.

They also stop being people of reason.

People become objects, and we see all the problems we discuss here very day.

One doesn't have to belong to an organized religion or believe in ANYTHING to see people as people. And IMHO, that is where freedom is possible.

402 freetoken  Sun, Mar 27, 2011 11:44:10pm

My take on all of this:

In 1883 Wellhausen published is famous work on the Documentary Hypothesis.

In 1859 Darwin published the Origin of Species.

In 1830 Lyell published his first version of Principles of Geology.

Lyell, Darwin, and Wellhausen destroyed the worldview of a very many people.

The resultant backlash, which includes the movements to put In God We Trust on every piece of money, are the desperate attempts on the part of some to avoid the obvious.

People would rationalize their bigotry with or without religion. It's happened before with former atheistic regimes and even on Youtube. Bigotry is not predicated on belief or non-belief. Neither is sexism, greed, gluttony, classism, etc. Religion, if one were to find it as a cause of human suffering, is still a creation of human beings. Take away the religion and you still have human nature which created religion in the first place. What we wind up with is just a secular version of that very same human nature -- and standards -- that created the religious standards to begin with. So in the end we wind up with a secular form of religiousness.

I still don't see the charisma but I still resign myself to respect him. Most everyone that did see the charisma have resigned themselves to the reality of the office. Speaking of the blindly religious:

'Graves uncovered in Jaffa pagan, not Jewish'

The ancient bones uncovered in digs next to the hotly-contested Andromeda Hill site in Jaffa are the remains of pagans and not Jews, the Antiquities Authority announced on Sunday.

The haredi organization “Atra Kadisha” on Sunday refuted the findings and vowed to hold a funeral for the bones on Monday in Jaffa.

The site has been the location of heated protests over the past year by haredi demonstrators who have clashed with police over what they say is the desecration of Jewish graves being carried out by the archaeological digs at the site. [...] The digs uncovered a wide variety of graves, and among many of them were found large numbers of pig bones. The burial of pig remains within human graves was a common practice among ancient pagans in what is today Israel.

The Antiquities Authority also mentioned on Sunday that digs that took place at Andromeda from 1993 to 1994 revealed graves from between the Persian and Byzantine periods. Most of the graves were dug into the sandstone and among them was discovered a jar containing a fetus dating to the 1800-2000 BCE, a find that the Antiquities Authority says definitively proves that there was a pagan population that lived in the area.

Last June, five police officers were injured during a protest staged by hundreds of haredim against the digs at Andromeda Hill. The police were hurt when they were hit by rocks thrown by the protesters.

The Central Rabbinical Congress of the USA and Canada announced on Sunday that it would hold protests in New York against the Andromeda hill digs and construction work on the luxury project. [...]

So, the evidence shows that these were pagan burial sites. Yet the hyper-religious don't care and are just going to go along with their preconceptions.

Religious identity is a hard thing to give up.

More evidence of how fuk'd up the emergency work at fuk-1: On NHK they are interviewing some gov agency guy who has stayed 5 days at the plant as work is ongoing, and he is describing the work conditions. He says the workers were given just two meals a day - emergency rice rations and some can food. They were given just one blanket each (remember, it has been near freezing at nights). They had to sleep in a conference room which itself was slightly radioactive, so they were putting down lead on the floor...

High-level radiation detected in trench outside Fukushima reactor building

High levels of radiation exceeding 1,000 millisieverts per hour were found in water in a trench outside the No. 2 reactor's turbine building at the troubled nuclear power plant in Fukushima on Sunday afternoon, Tokyo Electric Power Co. said Monday.

One end of the tunnel-like trench is located about 55 meters from the shore, with the surface of the water staying about 1 meter below its ground-level hole. But no trace has been confirmed of the contaminated water having flowed into the sea, an official of the company said.

Similarly high levels of radioactivity have been found in a pool of water in the basement of the turbine building for the No. 2 reactor at the Fukushima Daiichi complex, raising concerns that radioactive substances may have seeped into the environment, including the sea nearby.

The level of radiation at a similar trench for the No. 1 reactor was 0.4 millisievert per hour, the utility company said, adding that radiation could not be measured at a similar location for the No. 3 unit due to difficulty getting there.

In other words, the water that normally would be sealed inside the reactor holding the fuel rods has seeped outside the buildings.

Good morning from cold and sunny NYC.

Here's this morning's Krugman:

[Link: www.nytimes.com...]

it's about Professor Cronon at the University of Wisconsin. Sample:

So what was the G.O.P.’s response? A demand for copies of all e-mails sent to or from Mr. Cronon’s university mail account containing any of a wide range of terms, including the word “Republican” and the names of a number of Republican politicians.

If this action strikes you as no big deal, you’re missing the point. The hard right — which these days is more or less synonymous with the Republican Party — has a modus operandi when it comes to scholars expressing views it dislikes: never mind the substance, go for the smear. And that demand for copies of e-mails is obviously motivated by no more than a hope that it will provide something, anything, that can be used to subject Mr. Cronon to the usual treatment.

The Cronon affair, then, is one more indicator of just how reflexively vindictive, how un-American, one of our two great political parties has become.

The demand for Mr. Cronon’s correspondence has obvious parallels with the ongoing smear campaign against climate science and climate scientists, which has lately relied heavily on supposedly damaging quotations found in e-mail records.

Anonymous targets American Israel PAC: Operation Palestine

Sunday those claiming to represent the Internet hacktivist group known as "Anonymous" launched a cyber attack against The American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC). The attack is aimed at the website, aipac.org, and conducted via a modified LOIC (Low Orbit Ion Cannon) used to execute DDoS attacks. A distributed denial-of-service attack (DDoS attack) is an attempt to make a computer resource unavailable to its intended users.

According to the announcement from Anonymous:

America's Pro-Israel Lobby (AIPAC) is known for being one of the most powerful lobbies, keeping politicians in their pockets. During 2009, the U.S. provided Israel with at least 8.2 million per day in military aid and $0 in military aid to the Palestinians.

We are having none of it.

The notice goes on to give "attack instructions" on the installation and utilization of the LOIC (low orbit ion cannon).

Rendell writes 3 or 4 different kinds of novels: some are police (Inspector Wexford) some are like Patricia Highsmith but creepier. I don't really know how to classify her. She also writes under the name Barbara Vine but I tend to like those less.
I'd recommend The veiled one, Going Wrong, Talking to Strange Men, The Face of Trespass, The Killing Doll--- her older ones are much better, I think. Good psychological crime stuff.

It will be interesting to see how GOP candidates will handle this. They must know that pandering to the Tea Party base in the debate/primary/caucus season will be bad for them come the fall. Watching them try to walk the tightrope of saying enough to placate the base without saying stuff that is autumn poison will be fascinating.

That's where candidacies by Bachmann and Palin can really hurt the GOP. They will push everyone further to the crazy end of the spectrum in ways that can hurt them later.

re: #131 freetoken

re: #131 freetoken

The dispensationalists' apocalyptic fantasies arose in the early 20th century, as American Christianity became less and less "Reformed" and more emotionally based. It came along as part of the rise of what we think of today as "fundamentalism" - a movement to reject critical (academic) analysis of the Bible and various doctrines.

Part of it was also anti-Catholicism, but that has faded over the years.

Very true, and I would also add that there are many of them who think the Roman Empire will be revived. I don't like the Catholic bashing (I'm not one). I can disagree with points of doctrine, but there are many aspects of a liturgical church (e.g., Catholic, Episcopalian) that I can appreciate, having been raised in a more "informal" environment, and having a love of the arts (my username is an indication of my favorite artist). My criticism of the Catholic Church is that its hierarchy historically "interpreted" the Scriptures for its members and reading/inerpreting the Bible for yourself was discouraged, if not forbidden. The printing press changed all that because it made the printed word available to everyone (everyone who could read, that is).

That said, I don't believe that "critical" analysis of the Bible is merely "academic." It doesn't require a college degree to engage the mind and employ critical thinking.

more on the new PPP pol...
More from our Republican poll

-Romney's health care plan. This is the killer. 61% of GOP primary voters say they wouldn't vote for someone who supported a bill at the state level mandating that people have health insurance.
...
One other note from our Republican primary poll- GOP voters think that the ACORN threat has gone down significantly. In November of 2009 we found 52% of Republicans thought ACORN had stolen the election for Barack Obama in 2008. Now only 25% think the organization will steal the election for him again next year, while 43% think it will not and 32% aren't sure yet.

Now 25% may seem like a high percentage to think that an organization no longer in existence will manage to steal a Presidential election but it's less than half the number who thought that two years ago.

[Grabs bottle of whisky.]

Donald Trump and Fox have gone Full Metal Wingnut on Birtherism.

DONALD TRUMP: They asked John McCain for his birth certificate. They've asked others for their birth certificate. They asked Bush for his birth certificate, by the way. I just found out over the weekend. And they would ask me for my birth certificate and by the way, it's sitting on the top of my desk. They give you a certificate of live birth, which anybody can get, just walk into the hospital, and you get a certificate of live birth. It's not even signed by people. Now, this guy either has a birth certificate or he doesn't. And I didn't think this was such a big deal, but I will tell you, it's turning out to be a very big deal because people now are calling me from all over saying, please don't give up on this issue. If you weren't born in this country, you cannot be president.

CARLSON: Do you think he was born in this country?

TRUMP: I am really concerned. And I will tell you, when this all started a week ago, I assumed, hey, look, you have no doctors that remember. You have no nurses - this is the President of the United States - that remember. That ad that was placed in the Houston paper, that was placed in the paper days after he was born. So he could have come into the country, and they did it for social reasons they put it in! They did it for whatever reason. There are a lot of reasons you could have put an ad in. But he could have been born outside of this country. Why can't he produce a birth certificate and by the way, there is one story that his family doesn't even know what hospital he was born in!

Personally I find the whole idea, that you need to be an academic or a theologian to read the bible with a critical eye, ridiculous. Critical thinking is something that should be applied by everybody to nearly everything they interact with.

I'm an atheist, but I have read the bible, among other religious texts, quite a lot. Yet there are people of faith that have never even cracked their own religion's holy book. What a sad, sad state of affairs IMO.

I, uh, am not sure they're reading those numbers properly. The old poll was asking *if* they had stolen the election, while this one is asking about if they will do it again this next election. "Only" 25% saying that they will do so just means that some number feel that the 'threat' from ACORN has been neutralized enough to prevent a repeat, while a quarter *still* think that ACORN not just intends to rig the election in favor of Obama, but will succeed. I'm not really sure how you can take anything even remotely positive from those numbers.

When you are selling yourself as the "can do, practical guy who has run successful businesses" (my paraphrase), then examining the truth of that narrative is fair.

Trump's business history is one of boom and bust: borrow a shitload of money and see if you can use it to make a pile. If he does, everyone wins, and if doesn't, he folds up shop, files BK and stiffs the lenders. And that's all well and good: the rules permit that. But does any of that sound like it qualifies him to be President? It isn't like that model is adaptable to the US Government, unless we expect to embark upon a workout where we try to stiff the holders of US Government debt. (Who are largely you, me and millions of other people with pension funds, 401k funds, and money market mutual funds.)

That was probably one of the best sub-related movies made. Definitely recalled the terror experienced by submariners during WWII - and even though the focus was on the Nazi U-boat crew, such was the life for all submariners during the war. The constant worry about being caught by enemy destroyers, depth charges, mines, aircraft, and just when you think they'll make it back to port safely, getting hit as they come ashore.

Pretty much every other sub movie pales in comparison, except for perhaps Red October, and from a completely different genre, Operation Petticoat.

Ammo factory blast in Yemen kills at least 121

(CNN) -- At least 121 people were killed and 45 injured in an explosion at an ammunition factory in southern Yemen on Monday, medical sources said.

The death toll was expected to rise, said the sources, who asked that they not be identified because they are not authorized to speak to the news media. Two of them work at Republican Hospital in Abyan.

Most of the dead and injured were locals who had been ransacking the factory after it was taken over Sunday by militants, security officials said.

The explosion took place in Abyan Province, they said.

You don't need to be a scholar to read the Bible critically, but too many people read it UNcritically, with no background, and an eye to finding only what they want to see.

re: #605 garhighway

For some further insight into the Trump Method, including all its variations of chicanery and obfuscation (not to mention the expected hyper-self-serving greed factor), the story of his role in the demise of the USFL is worth a close look. ESPN featured a documentary called "Who Killed the USFL?" as part of their SUPERB documentary series, 30 for 30 (as an aside, I've seen a dozen of the films so far, and I have been incredibly impressed by the content and execution of every one -- I highly recommend the series), and it's a surprising story of a league that actually had a chance of surviving, but for the actions of one arrogant individual.

ESPN's page, including video excerpts, is worth a look:

30 for 30 -- Who Killed the USFL?

It's a fascinating tale.

Ayers also established, as I have contended from the beginning, that he is not the author of Audacity of Hope. Although Obama claims unique authorship of this book too, it was, as Ayers suggests, a disingenuous feint to the center written by committee.

That's from the cashill piece.

re: #492 garhighway

As foreign enemies loom not so large, domestic politics gets nastier. But this is somewhat different from climate science. State University faculty aren't supposed to use their position as a platform for lobbying their own state legislature. In fact, this is generally illegal.

Of course, casual use of email isn't "using your position as a platform".

By contrast, when it comes to climate science, there is no shadow of an excuse. It is not illegal to use state resources as a climate scientist to discover and disseminate information about climate change. Even if the news is bad, and even if you're disseminating it to an audience that may draw political conclusions.

It isn't even illegal to make mistakes about climate science, though as the investigations draw to a close, it seems that any mistakes committed have been tiny flaws in basically accurate work.

I just want to say, that as a Jew, I'm glad the Jerusalem Countdown was made, complete with CGI and the bionic man. Its storyline promises to provide comedy writers, most of whom are Jewish, rich material for at least six months.

I am also, as a Jew, thankful for Miral, a movie about a female Palestinian terrorist that looks like Frida Pinto and discovers the benefits of Dead Sea mud when getting a facial, only to be angered when her PLO boyfriend dies choking on said mud after he licks it off her face.

Never, as a Jew, have I felt more flattered by storytellers on the left and right. Now, all I need is a sequel to Schindler's list, and I'll be in a state of permanent euphoria.
