That's all FOX is these days - and may well have ever been. Every story follows the same formula.
1) Use words associated with story of the moment.
2) Make negative connotations/remarks about Democrats and/or Obama, regardless of whether they have anything to do with the story.
3) The first two steps are all that is necessary to increase hatred and anger in the target audience, but for further reinforcement, when repeating the story, invite random person to talk to who will make further negative inferences about Obama and Democrats. This person should, ideally, not be an expert on the story of the moment, but rather an expert on making negative remarks about liberals. (If you watch most stories, the guest brought on for another perspective is rarely an expert on, say, Japan or nuclear power. He is usually something like another FOX host, or a random radio jock from somewhere in the country. Ordinary people might wonder what credentials this person has with regards to the issue in question. He doesn't have any, but he is very experienced in the actual point of the story, which is why Democrats are bad.)

A group of artists intentionally caused terror and confusion in Washington Square park yesterday — by simulating a terrorist attack.
The group Artists for Israel, aided by Birthright Israel, set up a full-size Israeli bomb shelter in the middle of the park yesterday. They blasted sirens and simulated the boom of rockets hitting earth. Participants were given 15 seconds to run for shelter.
“There were people running,” said Arief Hussain, 34, a hot dog vendor in the park. “I didn’t know what was going on.”
But once the sirens started wailing, the NYPD and the Parks Department teamed up to shut down the event at 1:30, just half an hour after it began. “They didn’t have a permit,” said Detective James Alberici of the 6th Precinct.
Now that's a group of artists I can certainly support.

When They Say Fairness, They Mean Tax Cuts for the Rich
A Senate panel voted Thursday for a major revision in the state tax code that would mean lower bills for about 13 percent of Arizonans – and higher ones, on average, for everyone else.
The legislation, approved on a 4-2 party-line vote with Republicans in the majority, would replace the state’s graduated income tax structure with a single flat rate.
Preliminary estimates put that new figure at 2.13 percent. And that is lower than any of the current rates, which range from about 2.5 percent to 4.5 percent.
But to bring in the same amount of money as the current system, the plan would eliminate all deductions. That includes some big ones, like interest paid on home mortgages and charitable contributions.
And the exemptions from income that now exist for each person living in the home also disappear.
Rep. Steve Court, R-Mesa, who already has shepherded the proposal through the House, said the idea is fairness.
“This changes the way we look at how we tax income,” he said. “It also simplifies the process.”
Court said the idea of eliminating all those exemptions and deductions make sense “so that the government does not incentive how you spend your money and you don’t have a situation where a group of you all making $24,000 a year would all pay a different tax.”
But what Court called a “fair process” drew the ire of Sen. Paula Aboud, D-Tucson.
She pointed out the net effect is going to be a tax shift from those at the top of the income scale to those lower down. Figures crafted by the Joint Legislative Budget Committee conclude the break point is around the $100,000 range, with everyone below that paying something more than they do now.
He predicted that the average tax bill for those below $100,000 will be going up $200 a year. “It’s not going to be any excessive tax increase,” Court said.
Aboud bristled at that conclusion.
“Two hundred dollars to some people is a decider between food, medicine and a whole lot of things in these hard economic times,” she said.
I know we have serious immigration problems, but this is what happens when you just vote to get rid of the Mexicans. How much do you wanna bet that after the TGOP raises taxes on the middle class and lowers taxes on the upper class, they won't get rid of the Mexicans either?

Artillery bombardment is profoundly demoralizing for those on the receiving end, since for the most part they can't hit back. The enemy throws his heavy stuff at you and there's nothing for you to do but hunker down and hope you're still alive when the smoke clears. And you can do everything right and still end up dead if you ended up in the wrong place.

This is a result of the 2005 Hurricane Season, and the storm that interested me the most that year was Tropical Storm Delta, which probably got to Hurricane Strength at the end of its life as a Tropical Cyclone.

I'd say it was OK. And 9/11 is far enough in the past that many people needed a reminder. Artillery bombardment is profoundly demoralizing for those on the receiving end, since for the most part they can't hit back. The enemy throws his heavy stuff at you and there's nothing for you to do but hunker down and hope you're still alive when the smoke clears. And you can do everything right and still end up dead if you ended up in the wrong place.
9/11 was not a decade ago, and I imagine for people who lived in New York then, it seems like less than that.

I sympathize with Israelis and the constant terrorist attacks & threats they live with, but Israel isn't my country, America is. It's NOT OK with me for Israel's supporters to come to NYC and strike fear into the hearts of my already traumatized fellow Americans to drive home a point about their problems.
If on 9/11 terrorists had flown planes into the Sears Tower & the Hancock Center killing thousands of Chicagoans, causing major transportation & financial damage, and forever altering the skyline of your city, I'm pretty sure you'd feel differently about a group pulling a stunt like the one in NYC. Or maybe you wouldn't. Whatever. Regardless, I still think it was a callous, reckless, counterproductive thing to do.

Of course, most social conservatives apparently question the validity of actual data and graphs, so I'm pretty sure they'll not even believe it if they happen to even see it or care about it, because they think for some reason that it goes against their "faith" to listen to scientists or something.
(One caveat: I do not necessarily subscribe to the hypothesis presented in the article which states that produced papers alone qualify as whether or not a country is leading in the sciences. For certain, the contributions of the United States are still far ahead in many scientific areas which China has yet to master or even delve into. However, the decline of the output is surely a bad sign, and I am almost certain that the hysteria against scientists has at least a small part to play in this effect.)

Where the Chinese will likely excel sooner than later is in some of the engineering RDT&E as the sheer quantity of development has led to a great deal of turnover of ideas and items, and trained personnel to address practical issues.

That could be part of it, but I also think that part of it is the result of a culture and an economy where more money is to be made from selling and re-selling stuff that other people make than from researching and developing anything on one's own.

Well, it's a combination of things.
First of all, number of papers doesn't mean anything. The Chinese are still terrible at accuracy in their data and still have terrible problems with academic fraud. Standards are a lot lower there, because if someone who's favored by the government is saying one thing, others tend to want to support it. Mini-Lysenkoism. They don't really have a free and open academic debate. So in one regard, this isn't actually happening, they're not going to overtake us.
In another, however, they are increasing their output, and their society is becoming more, as you point out, Western, including more academically free. I don't know if there's any limit they're going to reach that they can make before they need wholesale cultural and governmental changes. And meanwhile, our support for academic freedom and debate is eroding, as the GOP spends a lot of time attempting to persecute scientists for various things, from stem cell research to climate change. Our culture, in regards to science, has been devaluing it for a long time even as China has begun to value it more.

If we want to believe in "American Exceptionalism", then we should also feel compelled to use our position of leadership in world affairs to exercise pressure on other countires to become more free, just and democratic.
But the opposite has come about: we are now dependent on Chinese capital and Arab oil. We are in no position whatsoever to encourage any social or political progress in these countries.

The reason I mentioned "Going to a Triangle Shirtwaist memorial dressed in H&M" is that there was recently an H&M factory fire where workers jumped to their deaths from the 9th floor when exit doors were locked. Triangle redux.
But the problem is how do you avoid sweatshop clothing? Pretty much everything you find today at all the popular mall stores comes from overseas sweatshop labor. I can't remember the last time I saw an ILGWU tag on an article of clothing. In fact I can't recall that I have ever seen one.

It's very difficult to do so, especially since the same company, like Dell, will have manufacturing units in different parts of the world. Dell has production facilities in India, Brazil, and China. The processors made by Intel are made in China, Costa Rica, Ireland, etc. etc. Figuring out where all the components of a particular build come from is a non-trivial challenge.
I'm not in any way in favor of not buying products from China, anyway. I'm simply pointing out that, of all the possible companies to source their computers from, many earth-first types pick the company with the worst, bar none, environmental record, and manufacturing facilities that are exploitative.

Speaking of all this manufacturing, NHK world is running a special on manufacturing in the quake and tsunami hit Tohoku region, and how interconnected that region is to a great deal of Japanese manufacturers, and how that plays even into multi-national companies.
One of the concerns aired is what will happen if the small Japanese companies can't recover in time, and the larger companies (like auto makers) turn to foreign, and cheaper (read: China) sources.

Man spends 18 years in prison (14 on death row) because 4 prosecutors withhold evidence.
Unbeknownst to Thompson or his attorney, the robber was cut while scuffling with one of his victims, leaving blood on the man's pants. The blood was type B; Thompson's blood type is O. He never got a chance to present this exculpatory evidence because his prosecutors never turned it over, even though they were constitutionally required to do so.The prosecutors decided to try Thompson for the robbery first, hoping to prevent him from taking the stand at his murder trial (since that would allow them to impeach his credibility by mentioning the earlier conviction) and to enhance the likelihood of a death sentence. They succeeded on both counts.
After the concealed evidence came to light, Thompson's robbery conviction was thrown out, and he won a new murder trial, during which he presented 13 pieces of evidence that, like the blood test, had been withheld by prosecutors. The jury acquitted him after deliberating for half an hour.
He won a $14 Million lawsuit which the supreme court vacated this week.
The majority opinion, written by Justice Clarence Thomas, found that the failure of Connick (fun side note: he’s the father of crooner Harry Connick, Jr.) to train his assistants on their obligations to turn over exculpatory evidence isn’t negligent enough to subject the government that employs him to liability. Connick and his assistants themselves (an office with a long history of misconduct) were already protected from any personal liability by absolute prosecutorial immunity, a concept the Supreme Court essentially invented from whole cloth.

Man Charged With Trying To Sell Military Spy Plane On EBay
A foreign national was indicted yesterday for allegedly illegally importing an unmanned spy plane into the U.S., and then trying to resell it on eBay.According to a press release from the Department of Homeland Security's Immigration and Customs Enforcement service, Henson Chua of the Philippines was indicted and charged by a grand jury in Tampa with violating the Arms Export Control Act and smuggling. Chua is accused of importing an RQ-11B "Raven" Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) from the Philippines into the U.S., which is listed on the U.S. Munitions List as a defensive item, "without having first obtained from the U.S. Department of State a license or written authorization." He then "aided and abetted the attempted export" of the same UAV.
U.S. arms code prohibits people from buying and selling defense equipment without permission from the government, primarily to prevent people from selling U.S.-manufactured equipment to foreign governments. But Chua managed to reverse the process.

Thais to destroy potatoes with traces of radiation
Thai authorities say they will destroy a shipment of sweet potatoes from Japan because they were found to have traces of radiation.
The Thai Food and Drug Administration says the sweet potatoes had radiation levels well below the that which the World Health Organization considers hazardous. The tubers were found to have Iodine-131 levels of 15.25 Becquerel per kilogram. The hazardous threshold is 100 Becquerel per kilogram.
The agency said Tuesday the shipment would be destroyed as a precaution.
Naturally occurring radiation can be found in almost everything in the world and the agency didn't say what normal levels of radiation in sweet potatoes would be nor whether any random tuber tested in Bangkok might have similar traces of radiation.
Simply a stunt. Besides being already a very low level of radiation, I131 has a short half life (8 days.) Sweet potatoes can be kept for weeks at a cool temp. Within a month, because of natural decay, the amount of radiation would be almost nothing.
Yet they destroy the food anyway.

No, it's not. There is a scientific consensus that AGW is occurring. This has been extensively covered by Charles here on LGF.
It would be bizarre indeed if AGW is not occurring, given the two simple facts:
1) CO2 in atmosphere increases the temperature of that atmosphere over time
2) We are putting out huge amounts of CO2 into the atmosphere.

Be more specific. What part of AGW do you not believe is a fact? A non-exhaustive list of options might be:
A) "I don't believe that CO2 in the atmosphere has a (measurable) warming effect."
B) "I don't believe that human-caused CO2 emissions significantly affect the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere."
C) "I don't believe that the warming effect of human-emitted CO2 is sufficient to measurably affect average temperatures."
You may have something else. But you can't just say "I don't believe in AGW" and expect that no-one is going to call you out on it.

Yes, but even though it's a small amount, it has a profound effect. This part really is scientific fact, demonstrable with a simple greenhouse. As the CO2 concentration rises-- even by a relatively small portion-- the atmosphere increases in heat. So that part of your objection is disproved by physics.

UN chief chastises Israel at 'crucial time' in peace process
United Nations chief Ban Ki-moon urged Israel yesterday to refrain from provocative actions at a "crucial time" in the Israeli-Palestinian peace process, as a September deadline set for a peace deal fast approaches.
“The target dates for reaching an Israeli-Palestinian agreement on permanent status issues and completing the Palestinian Authority's two-year state-building program are fast-approaching," said Mr. Ban, speaking at a regional UN meeting in Latin America, where support for Palestinian sovereignty runs high. "Yet, the Israeli-Palestinian negotiations remain at a worrying standstill.”
Specifically, the UN secretary-general called on Israel to halt settlement construction in the West Bank, calling its occupation "politically unsustainable." He also urged Israel to ease the blockade on Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip, which Israel has defended as crucial to preventing weapons from flowing into the hands of militants.

German weekly says Gazan may have intel
Israel is holding a Palestinian engineer from Gaza because of his alleged ties to Hamas and possible knowledge of Gilad Shalit, Dir Spiegel reported.
Last week an Israeli court partly removed a gag order concerning Dirar Abu Sisi, 42, who allegedly was abducted while in the Ukraine and brought back to Israel.
The German weekly said Western intelligence circles said Ukrainian agents kidnapped Abu Sisi on a train in Kiev in February and later handed him over to Israeli officials.
One informant told the weekly Israel believes Abu Sisi is a high ranking Hamas official who knows a number of secrets.
"If Mossad goes to such an expense and interrogates the man for six weeks, then he must know something Israel absolutely wants to hear," an unnamed source told the German weekly. If Abu Sisi was just an "irritant," he would have simply been killed, the source said.

For your perusal, one of my biggest meteorite fragments, about 3 pounds, an "L" chondrite, for the Sahara... you can see the black fusion crush on some parts of the surface, and the stress fractures from impact...
(This works on IE, but seems to choke up on Safari, don't know why. I use Safari, but I had to test the link on IE because it kept crashing Safari on me).

It's difficult to tell the difference between links and pages at this point. I don't think there's anything wrong with posting in both places. Links auto convert to pages but not the other way round, so far as I can tell.

I think I could endure one surgery I particularly want for both vanity and medical reasons, but geez.

The banks have mostly repaid their obligations (several because they couldn't wait to get out from under the reg/obligations), but the portions dealing with homeowner assistance are going to cost the govt significantly. When first proposed, it was expected to help 2-3 million. It's helped maybe 600,000 and the real estate market continues to be suffering all kinds of problems as various local markets are continuing to readjust to lower market conditions.

And nobody really knowing who the fuck he is. The truth is we know these people because we watch politics everyday. Most Americans don't know who Michelle Bachmann is. That's why the waiting is so strange. They have media recognition like Obama did between 2005-2006, but the American people aren't familiar with them at all. Obama got started early because he knew most Americans, even most black Americans didn't really know him. Hell they couldn't even say his name. And some of these candidates who are known haven't been in office or had real jobs for years. Their resumes are blank slates for the last 3-4 years. Seriously, TV pundit and author of self aggrandizing books are not traditional qualifications for president.

Plus Obama will have $ 1 billion dollars to spend and that won't include any outside groups that will be in full force as a result of Citizens United. I would think so. I mean, just look at Huntsman again -- the Ambassador to China can't exactly sign on to a political party or movement that is isolationist and filled with incoherent populist fail like the teabaggers. And he can't go around saying stupid shit about birth certificates and nuking Iran into a parking lot. He's actually held accountable for things he says on a international stage. Why would he sign on to the current GOP freakshow?
Better to let them destroy each other and hope that Obama gets a second term. That way, all the current crop of candidates will be discredited as losers and he can make a clean run without all that tea party/birther shit dragging him down.

But the problem is how do you avoid sweatshop clothing? Pretty much everything you find today at all the popular mall stores comes from overseas sweatshop labor. I can't remember the last time I saw an ILGWU tag on an article of clothing. In fact I can't recall that I have ever seen one.
We discussed that at the lecture I went to last Sunday about the Triangle Fire.
One resource I do like to share with people is Fair Indigo, a catalog clothing company that does clothing from fair-trade companies, including some in the United States. The clothes look like actual clothes a person might wear (some sweat-free companies seem to think a person can live entirely in turquoise crinkle-cotton), and the prices are competitive.
It was started by a group of clothing execs from Lands End, and it's kind of a cool resource.

Yes it was. Obama asked outside groups not to get involved in the 2008 campaign. They aren't doing that for 2012 though. I'm not saying Obama will win in a walk, he can't just phone it in and the GOP base will be rabid. He's got negatives like anyone who's been president will have, but he is also better off than Clinton and Reagan at this point and he's not weak enough for the GOP to show up at the party late.

Pawlenty and Mitt have already committed to the current GOP fail. They're doomed to run now in spite of all the teabagger freakshow that's going on. They either run now while people are paying attention to them, or they forget about ever trying to become POTUS.
Huntsman, OTOH, got the hell out of dodge back in 2009 and decided to put his time to better use in China. He's playing the long game, I think. He has his own personal wealth. He's got executive experience a Governor of Utah. He's been bolstering his foreign policy cred these last few years, and he could emerge after the 2012 election as a voice of moderation and reason, acting like a statesman, and prepping a serious run in 2016.

This makes me wonder. I wonder if any of the recently silent GOP politicians are just waiting for the party to implode so a real leader, presumably themselves, could step up afterwards and take things in a new direction.
Some woman who writes for the Wall Street Journal basically said just that in a piece a while ago. Her idea for the party at this point is, tap some schmo to go up against Obama, hope he doesn't win, and wait to pick a real winner in the next election.

It seems like that's what is going on. Instead of fighting your own party and getting ejected as a RINO, just let them come to realize how stupid they are being on their own.
Unfortunately, while it may work as a strategy, I think that it is a little cowardly. Speak out against evil and stupidity when you see it, don't just sit back and hope it goes away.
