Hateblogger Pamela Geller Testifying for Alaskan ‘Anti-Sharia’ Idiocy

Deranged bigot invited to testify before Alaskan House
Wingnuts • Views: 37,756

“I ♥ Muslims.”Republicans in Alaska, as in many other states, are pushing ridiculous fear-mongering “anti-sharia” legislation instead of doing the real work of the government. Today in Alaska, Rep. Carl Gatto is holding a hearing to promote this absurd nonsense, and he’s calling as a witness none other than one of the most deranged bloggers on the Internet — Pamela “Shrieking Harpy” Geller, leader of the anti-Muslim hate group SIOA: Geller in Alaska, DC, NY, California, Texas — SIOA in Action! - Atlas Shrugs.

Here’s the web page for this disgusting waste of time: Sponsor Statement: HB 88 - Use Of Foreign Law — 27th AK Legislature House Majority. Write to Carl Gatto and tell him that Pamela Geller is a whacked out Birther and confirmed bigot who runs a hate group and associates with fascists and neo-Nazis, and who has absolutely no business testifying before any American legislature. Here’s Gatto’s contact information.

And here’s what I mean by “fascists and neo-Nazis.” Both Geller and her hateful crony Robert Spencer are open supporters of Britain’s far right English Defence League — and here we see members of the English Defence League at a photo shoot:

Notice the flags of the Ulster Volunteer Force — a Northern Irish paramilitary terrorist group that carried out numerous bombings against Catholic civilians.

These are Pamela Geller’s and Robert Spencer’s “anti-sharia” allies.

OMG! They've built the only Mosque in all of Alaska less than a year ago. CREEPING SHARIA!

5 HappyWarrior  Wed, Mar 30, 2011 10:28:11am

There's no threat of Sharia Law coming to the US period. And the people who fear it most are the same people who think separation of church and state is a bad thing or live in areas with very few Muslims. The fear of Sharia law is the same as those who feared a Catholic president would make us abide by the laws of Rome over the laws of the Constittuion. It's the same bullshit but a different flavor of it.

EXACTLY.

I had to explain to my Republican relatives that the threat of Sharia ever taking over America was non-existent, given the fact that we'd have to throw away our entire system of government to do it. I pointed out that we went to war with each other over far less than that. They dropped the argument after that.

Back on planet earth:

SPLC Testifies About Rising Anti-Muslim Sentiment

So the hearings that began today in the Senate, conducted by Sen. Dick Durbin, are a welcome development. Durbin, chair of the Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights and Human Rights, announced last week that he would hold hearings “in response to the spike in anti-Muslim bigotry in the last year including Quran burnings, restrictions on mosque construction, hate crimes, hate speech and other forms of discrimination.”

SPLC President Richard Cohen today submitted testimony at Durbin’s invitation.

Although FBI hate crime statistics for 2010 won’t be released until next fall, it appears from our monitoring of news reports that those statistics will almost certainly show a spike in hate crimes against Muslims, the second such spike since 9/11.

We’ve compiled a list of 156 hate crimes and bias incidents since 9/11. About a third of those occurred within a year of the attacks of 2001. But they quickly declined and leveled off after President George W. Bush delivered a series of speeches in which he assured Americans that Muslims were not our enemies.

Now, these incidents are rising again. About one-fifth of the 156 incidents we recorded have occurred since May 2010.

That’s only one indicator of the toxic atmosphere. Another is the appearance in numerous state legislatures of bills to ban the use of Islamic Shariah law in our courts

Is it so ridiculous? Take this example from Pennsylvania two weeks ago:

Judge rejects Amish request to deal privately with alleged Ponzi schemer

In court filings, they focused less on any financial fraud Beachy might have perpetrated than on his decision to draw them into a judicial proceeding. Resolving financial disputes through the courts is contrary to their faith, they said, and more than 2,000 of them urged the court to let them resolve the matter among themselves. Amid the backlash, Beachy had a change of heart and asked the court to let him withdraw his bankruptcy filing.

On Friday, a judge rejected that request.

Citing the separation of church and state, federal bankruptcy judge Russ Kendig said it would be unconstitutional for the court to dismiss the case and cede control of the matter to a religious group.

“The debtor in this case is clearly asking this court to delegate its function to a religious body,” Kendig wrote. “Any such delegation is forbidden by the Establishment Clause,” the judge wrote, referring to part of the First Amendment.

So long as the ban on religious courts is applied against all religions, and not just against Islam, I don't see a problem. Depending on the wording, it may well end up being a victory, not for Islamophobes, but for secularism and humanism, and end up biting the fundamentalists pushing for it in the end anyway. And if it is worded specifically against Muslims, then the Supreme Court won't let it stand. NBD.

The law does nothing. The law prohibits "a court, arbitrator, mediator, administrative agency, or enforcement authority from applying a law, rule, or provision of an agreement that violates an individual's right under the Constitution of the State of Alaska or the United States Constitution"

It's like a law criminalizing crime. Of course it's not allowable for an individual's rights to be violated.

The courts already religious courts certain latitudes and there has been no real detrimental effect.

Further, parties have to agree to using a religious court. Those courts are not automatically used.

I fail to see the difference between Sharia Law for Muslims, and Biblical Law for Christians and Jews. Every religion has some extremists who wish that the law of their religion (Sharia Law for some, Biblical Law for others) were the law of the land. Of course, we should be concerned about these extremists, e.g. someone who would harm a doctor who provides abortions. But I see no justification for singling out Sharia Law. Ironically, the right-wing people who want to single out Sharia Law tend to be opposed to the alternative to religious law: the separation of religion and state.

70 Tigger2005  Wed, Mar 30, 2011 5:04:32pm

Those pictures are just like the pictures and videos Islamic terrorists take of themselves. Exactly like them. Can they not see the irony? Of course not, because they're racist morons.

They're exactly like what they claim to hate.

But it's not surprising. They think English culture is better not because it's a democracy, not because of the Magna Carta and secularism, not because of IDEAS...they think English culture is better because of skin color. As long as they are white and the "enemy" is a darker shade, they can be exactly like the worst Muslim terrorists and they'll still be good people in their own eyes.
