Amid Public Vitriol, Boehner, Reid Negotiate Budget Deal To Avoid Shutdown
As insight into how there's often a huge mismatch between public kabuki and behind-the-scenes legislative wrangling, a well-placed congressional source tells me that while House Republicans and Senate Democrats ratcheted up the government shutdown rhetoric on Tuesday, top aides to House Speaker John Boehner and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid sat down in Reid's office and continued negotiating a solution -- a meeting the source described as a key development and thaw in the negotiations.
It's the first evidence we've seen all week that a shutdown isn't a foregone conclusion, particularly in light of Paul Kane's scoop that Boehner is reaching out to conservative Democrats to find a compromise.
Republicans downplayed the development, pointing out that discussions between the principals never stopped.

TARP investment in banks repaid with profit
The portion of the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) that went to banks has now turned a profit for the federal government, the Treasury Department announced Wednesday.
After receiving $7.4 billion in TARP repayments Wednesday, the Treasury has now received $251 billion from banks participating in various bailout programs, which is good for a $6 billion profit from the $245 billion originally handed out to banks. The department now estimates that bank investments under TARP will ultimately net taxpayers roughly $20 billion in profit.
Furthermore, the Treasury estimates that all the TARP programs combined — including money doled out to banks, insurance company American International Group (AIG) and domestic auto companies — will result in "little to no cost to taxpayers."

Just like the new found freedom in Egypt...
CAIRO — In post-revolutionary Egypt, where hope and confusion collide in the daily struggle to build a new nation, religion has emerged as a powerful political force, following an uprising that was based on secular ideals. The Muslim Brotherhood, an Islamist group once banned by the state, is at the forefront, transformed into a tacit partner with the military government that many fear will thwart fundamental changes.

It is also clear that the young, educated secular activists who initially propelled the nonideological revolution are no longer the driving political force — at least not at the moment.

AARP lobbied for the new health care law and now it stands to profit, Republican lawmakers charged Wednesday as they called for the IRS to investigate whether the powerful interest group representing older Americans should be stripped of its federal tax exemption.Three veteran GOP representatives released a report that estimates the seniors lobby could make an additional $1 billion over 10 years on health insurance plans whose sales are expected to pick up under the new law. They also questioned seven-figure compensation for some AARP executives.
"Based on the available evidence, substantial questions remain about whether AARP should maintain its tax-exempt status," said the report, released by Reps. Wally Herger of California, Charles Boustany of Louisiana and Dave Reichert of Washington.

The professional whiners are doing their job over Obama's energy speech... but the President proves once again he is not the stereotype that the rabid right wing prefers to portray.
A bit of the speech:
Now, here’s the thing -– we have been down this road before. Remember, it was just three years ago that gas prices topped $4 a gallon. I remember because I was in the middle of a presidential campaign. Working folks certainly remember because it hit a lot of people pretty hard. And because we were at the height of political season, you had all kinds of slogans and gimmicks and outraged politicians -- they were waving their three-point plans for $2 a gallon gas. You remember that -- “drill, baby, drill”
-- and we were going through all that. (Laughter.) And none of it was really going to do anything to solve the problem. There was a lot of hue and cry, a lot of fulminating and hand-wringing, but nothing actually happened. Imagine that in Washington. (Laughter.)The truth is, none of these gimmicks, none of these slogans made a bit of difference. When gas prices finally did fall, it was mostly because the global recession had led to less demand for oil. Companies were producing less; the demand for petroleum went down; prices went down. Now that the economy is recovering, demand is back up. Add the turmoil in the Middle East, and it’s not surprising that oil prices are higher. And every time the price of a barrel of oil on the world market rises by $10, a gallon of gas goes up by about 25 cents.
The point is the ups and downs in gas prices historically have tended to be temporary. But when you look at the long-term trends, there are going to be more ups in gas prices than downs in gas prices. And that’s because you’ve got countries like India and China that are growing at a rapid clip, and as 2 billion more people start consuming more goods -- they want cars just like we’ve got cars; they want to use energy to make their lives a little easier just like we’ve got -- it is absolutely certain that demand will go up a lot faster than supply. It’s just a fact.
There's truth in there that the atavists, revanchists, and paleos just refuse to accept - that they can't accept because it goes against their dogma.

Now, in light of the ongoing events in Japan, I want to just take a minute to talk about nuclear power. Right now, America gets about one-fifth of our electricity from nuclear energy. And it’s important to recognize that nuclear energy doesn’t emit carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. So those of us who are concerned about climate change, we’ve got to recognize that nuclear power, if it’s safe, can make a significant contribution to the climate change question.
And I’m determined to ensure that it’s safe. So in light of what’s happened in Japan, I’ve requested a comprehensive safety review by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to make sure that all of our existing nuclear energy facilities are safe. And we’re going incorporate those conclusions and lessons from Japan in design and the building of the next generation of plants. But we can’t simply take it off the table.
My administration is leading global discussions towards a new international framework in which all countries who are operating nuclear plants are making sure that they’re not spreading dangerous nuclear materials and technology.
Here again the President shows his detractors are just professional whiners. I've defended the President (for whom I did not vote) over this issue since the beginning, when here at LGF the usual voices would chime in against Obama on how he (supposedly like all leftists) is anti-nuke, when anyone who actually looked at his history would have known differently.
I think the President's speech is a bit too optimistic, but I also realize that's part of his job.
Energy will remain a top topic, though the complexity of the actual matter will make for plenty of fertile ground for the demagogues of the DRILL BABY DRILL crowd.

Arizona solves non-existent problem, creates more.
Despite there being no evidence to support state Senator Nancy Barto's claim that "sex-selection abortions are happening in this country," Governor Jan Brewer signed a controversial bill into law banning race/gender-based abortions.
The new law forces any doctor who performs an abortion to sign an affidavit confirming that the reason for the abortion wasn't the race or gender of the fetus.
The bill also allows the father of the fetus -- as long as he's married to the woman who gets an abortion -- to sue a doctor if he thinks an abortion was performed based on race or sex.
A violation of the law is a class 3 felony.
Opponents of the bill say there's no evidence to suggest that abortions being performed for either of those reasons is a problem in Arizona. They say the new law "is just to further damage the reputations of women who get an abortion."
We sent the bill's author, state Representative Steve Montenegro, and Barto emails asking them to produce any evidence that these types abortions are happening in Arizona.
They never got back to us.
Aside from the law tackling a problem that doesn't actually exist -- wasting legislators' time and taxpayers' money -- it poses several problems.
For starters, lying on a form about why you want an abortion is pretty easy to do, so in reality, this is simply a symbolic jab at women who get abortions. Or, in the words of Senator Kyrsten Sinema,"this legislation spreads myths that are untrue, and the implication that women make decisions based on these motives in our country is offensive."
Not to mention another significant problem -- let's say a woman and her significant other have a falling out after learning they're pregnant. What's to stop a woman's bitter baby-daddy from falsely reporting that his ex is having an abortion based on race or gender out of spite? As hard as it is to prove someone's having an abortion for one of those reasons, it's equally difficult to prove that they're not.

CIA 'gathering intel firsthand' in Libya, source says
The CIA is operating in Libya to help the United States increase its "military and political understanding" of the situation, a U.S. intelligence source said.
"But yes, we are gathering intel firsthand and we are in contact with some opposition entities," the source told CNN.
I'm pretty sure this explains how the Libyan foreign minister showed up in London today. I doubt he got out of the country on his own.

Arizona lawmakers further expand abortion restrictions
The latest measure alters the definition of what kind of abortions must be performed by a doctor. In doing so, it overrules existing practice that allows a certified nurse practitioner to administer RU-486 which chemically induces a woman to miscarry.
But HB 2416 also expands what information must be provided to a woman prior to the procedure for her to give “informed consent.” That includes not only offering her a chance to view the ultrasound that is typically conducted anyway prior to an abortion but also the opportunity to hear the heartbeat of her unborn child.
And doctors who do not comply can not only lose their license but also are subject to suit by the woman, her husband and, in the case of a minor, her parents.
The 18-10 vote comes just one day after Brewer signed into law a measure that makes it a crime for a physician to perform an abortion knowing that the woman is seeking to terminate the pregnancy because of the gender or race of the child, with doctors subject to 3 1/2-year prison terms.
And another proposal awaiting final action would place yet another restriction on who can perform an abortion.
Bryan Howard, chief executive of Planned Parenthood Arizona, said the measures, taken together, are “aimed at decimating the ranks of providers.”

Well, if Syria was successfully overthrown, that would really give the Iranian government major heartburn. They really are starting to feel the effects of sanctions, but there are still to many countries willing to meet their needs.
The Green movement and others would prefer regime change the way Egypt did it or is try to do it.
Lebanon would be a US Allie now. Period.

Gaddafi (that's my spelling and I'm sticking with it) is not as much a fool as he seems. He's used the advantage of interior lines to strike first at Zawiyah, then strike East. He's adapted quickly to the U.S. intervention, and now dresses up his soldiers in civilian clothes and puts them in civilian trucks.
They've still got their commo gear, their training, and their mortars and MGs. That's enough, against ragtag opposition, to win a ground war if the U.S. abstains from all action against "civilians". And if we do shoot up one of his divisions as it's storming Rahts Auss or wherever, there'll be a terrible toll of 22 year old, fit young civilians, each recently the owner of an AK47, a brace of grenades, and so forth.
Every war is a turd sandwich. That fare may be the best on the menu, but it still stinks. We may find we have to intervene more heavily. Weighing in, and then punting, is hardly an option.

[G-man]This sounds like a job for the military industrial complex![/G-man]
*sigh*
What I don't like about all this is that more weapons are getting out into the world. Into hands that have no accountability, and we have no say about who they are used on in the future.
I really hope this all works out for the best. Because the worst case scenario is this turns out like Afghanistan v1.0. We train them and arm them, they win, turn into an extremist state and use those techniques and weapons against us.
re: #163 justaminute
The Green movement and others would prefer regime change the way Egypt did it or is try to do it.
As would I. Unfortunately I doubt Iranian state security forces will show the same kind of restraint that the Egyptian military did. Maybe they can do it without our help though, if these democratic revolutions elsewhere help them muster enough public support.

Hey all! How are you?
I just made an awesome dinner that came out better than I had hoped, so I thought I would share the recipe.
Grilled marinated flank steak with a brandy mushroom sauce over wild rice
You will need:
1 lb flank steak (more is fine :) )
chili powder
paprika
nutmeg
cinnamon
salt
pepper
1 lime
1/2 onion
about 6 oz brandy
minced garlic, 5 -7 cloves
1/2 red sweet bell pepper
olive oil
margarine (or butter if not kosher)
1/4 cup beef bullion
1/2 lb mushrooms
1 grill pan
1 small pan suitable for making a rue
1 sauce pot (coverable)
1 large pot suitable for cooking spaghetti
rice, noodles or kasha to serve over.
Step one:
Rinse off your flank steak, pat dry, lay on a plate. Sprinkle lightly with salt and pepper. Coat liberally with a mixture of chili powder and paprika. Sprinkle on some nutmeg and cinnamon.
Step two: In a large ziplock bag place 1 tbsp olive oil, 2 oz. brandy, the minced garlic, the juice of that lime and about 2 oz of beef bullion. Emulsify the mixture in the bag. Place the flank steak into the bag and make certain it is liberally coated in the marinade.
Step three:
In the large pot bring several quarts of water to about 120 degrees. This is about the temperature of hot water from most sinks. Place the ziplock bag with the meat and marinade into the water and let sit (without external heat) for 1-2 hours.
This step is the magical kitchen chemistry part. You will have all sorts of interactions between the fats in the meat and the marinade.
Step four:
In your sauce pot, place the half onion with a little olive oil. caramelize for 1/2 hour. Thickly cut the mushrooms and add them to the pot with a few oz of brandy after that half hour. Cover.
Step five:
When you are thinking it is time to start the rice or the noodles or the kasha, I used wild rice for this, start boiling the water for it in another pot, pull out your grill pan. Start your rice.
Prepare a rue in your small sauce pan. Use 2 tbsp margarine or butter an one heaping tbsp flour. Stir vigorously with whisk until dark blonde over medium heat. This will take appox 5 minutes.
Heat your grill pan while you are doing the rue. When your grill pan is searing hot, put the flank steak on.
Step Six: Add the left over marinade to your rue. Whisk in thoroughly and add about 2 oz brandy as well as the 1/4 cup beef bullion. When mixed and heated for about 2 minutes, fold this into the mushroom and onions. recover the sauce pot.
Step seven: By now your flank steak should be ready to flip. Add the red pepper to the grill pan.
Step eight: Fold any drippings from the steak into the sauce. Let stand, deal with your side of noodles or rice.
Step nine: Thinly slice the steak at an angle.
When plating, put the rice down first, then a layer of the mushroom brandy sauce, then several slices of steak with the peppers on top.

Last week Mr. Dinnerjacket was interviewed by a female Iranian reporter. Her head scarf slipped off halfway through the interview and stayed off for the rest of the interview. This might not seem like very much to you but it was a very big deal. Some think that their going to start laying off the Muslim issues to satisfy the young. They have shut out alot of the Mullahs in the past 2 months. They might consider it a win if they get to keep all the oil money and the power as well as pacifying the young.

Convolutions and deconvolutions are sort of ubiquitous tools. If you think about it, any integral transform is a convolution - while you are at it, in QM, you simply can't escape them.

I kept wondering why McCain's folks seemed to be trying to keep a lid on her; I thought they were making a mistake. They weren''t.
She's a perfectly attractive woman, by the normal-human standard used for politicians. But so are a lot people I actually like.

We had two hellacious thunderstorms yesterday. A house down the street from me was hit by lightening and caught fire last night. I think part of their roof is gone; no clue what sort of damage they had inside.
Belle Chase was hit by a spike of a tornado, F0 or F1, yesterday. Nasty system.

I started at a local social club bar doing some paid shifts a couple of weeks back after a couple of years of tending my own clubs bar voluntarily.
I got a call this afternoon from their secretary informing me that his superiors have told him to let me go. To his credit he wanted to keep me on - i couldn't get any specific reason and up to sunday (the last day i worked) feedback had been "positive".
I was the only man they had hired to work bar there in some years - and I just don't think my face fitted with their more regular (i.e heavy) drinkers.

Absolutely. The plus of a pressure cooker is that you can really retain a lot of the flavors of the veggies or mushrooms you put in and you have a ready made brazing miracle. The downside is that the high pressure will make your veggies mushy if you are not very careful.
The pressure cooker was invented believe it or not for Napoleon's armies so that food could be made more quickly for the troops.

Good to see Obama acting so swift on Libya. Where was he with Iran?
Libya is right across from Italy, a NATO nation. Italy is isolated, bordering Tunisia on its coast road to the West, Egypt to the East, and as far as roads go, that's about it.
Libya is small, it's pretty much all desert, and it's alone. With any luck, we can do this and not get our fingers burned too badly.
Iran, by contrast, is big. It's far, far better armed and trained. The U.S. has no regional allies to speak of, and logistics into the region are difficult. The terrain and climate in Iran are far less favorable to air operations.
Imagine trying to stop the Revolutionary Guards from putting some rebel town in Iran to the sword. With what? Cruise missiles? The notion that our military can do anything with nothing and be done before breakfast is cockeyed.
Obama was in the reality zone, facing facts. Much as we might wish Iranians who want their own freedom luck, we cannot help them short of a major, boots-on-the-ground, bloody war. That, we're not going to embark on for humanitarian reasons.
The people of Iran should know this before they decide whether to take their chances in open rebellion or not.
In Libya, the odds are stacked as heavily in our favor as they can possibly be. And yet, as we watch the news, it seems that this might not be a cakewalk.

I don't remember where I got it, some book probably, but it is quite nice.
1/4 cup olive oil
1/4 cup honey
1/4 cup chopped fresh mint and parsley
1/4 cup fresh lemon juice
2 teaspoons grated lemon peel
2 large cloves of garlic, minced
2 teaspoons peeled, grated fresh ginger
1 teaspoon ground cumin
1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper
Salt and pepper to taste
Covers about 4 thighs and legs.

Ah, you mean the "F1" key.
In Linux operating systems, usually there's online documentation in the form of "man pages" (manual pages) which are accessed through the command "man [command name]".
So if, for example, you want to see all the options for the 'mount' command, you'd type:
man mount
The package manager for Fedora is called 'yum'.
man yum
Other commonly used commands include 'find', 'touch', 'top', 'ifup', 'gzip', 'kill', 'killall', 'umount', and several other equally potentially embarrassing examples.
Probably thousands of times over the years, people have sat at a terminal typing "man [whatever]" and giggling like Beavis & Butthead the whole time.

The opposite end of the spectrum is that if you work too well, not much of anything ever goes wrong, or at least if it does, it doesn't stay wrong for long. You become transparent, and that can make it very difficult to 'appear' useful. Instead of thinking, "wow, Nerdy McNeckbeard's recovery was so effective that we barely noticed when the $importantThing failed", they think, "well, it was just a minor little glitch - why are we paying this guy?"
Then they outsource it to India and everyone bitches about how shitty it is.

A bit off current topics but I just finished a 500mile road trip towing a small pickup behind a motor home.Trying to cut down on fuel consumption I held the speed down to 55. Along the way a good number of 18 wheelers would pass. For years when one would pass I would flick the headlights to let the driver know he was safe to pull in front. In the past the driver would in turn blink his tail lights as a thank you. Only one driver did so. Any commercial drivers on board and if so is the blinking of headlights and a thank you no longer recognized?

It's been going up for days. Pretty clearly the water being poured into the reactors is flushing out through the outlet.
It may not be the worst outcome, as it is better to wash into the sea than to be airborne and breathed/consumed by people.

With radiation, dose is important.
Just going outside into the sun you get some. Eating a banana, you get some. Live in Denver, you get a lot more.
Only when the dose goes high enough to be visible against this background exposure that's just part of life is there any reason to get excited. Right now, that iodine dose is less consequential than five minutes in the sun.

Good for you!
By the way, do you know of any compact florescent or LED light bulbs that are not made in China. My father is willing to use advanced bulbs but is unwilling to buy those made in China. It's not bigotry, but he sees buying most Chinese goods as aiding a strategic rival.

I'll admit to seeing it as much worse than a strategic rival, considering their actions and history. The centerpiece of my liberalism is Human Rights. China is in the bottom 5. And that's only the start.

The talk about made in China brought to mind a Pre WW2 story about Made In Japan vrs Made in U.S.A. The story was that to overcome the stigma of Made in Japan, there was a town in Japan Usa so things there were labeled Made in USA. How true I have no idea.

Yeah, I like them and Palermo's. You know the funny thing about pizza is it's something you always like form your childhood but what you like on it changes. As a kid, you're mostly cheese or pepperoni, and then as you get older starts to change. I love mixtures of meat and vegetables on mine now. My dad though is gross and likes anchioves.

2 cups of flour
2 tsp baking powder
1 tsp salt
2/3 cup milk
1/4 cup oil (I use olive.)
mix till it leaves the sides of the bowl and then kneed 10 times. Roll out and put it on a greased pan.
Add toppings as preferred. Bake for 20-25 minutes at 425 degrees F.
Cheaper, better and only a little slower than any frozen pizza.

No kidding.
I still don't know what to make of the IAEA announcement today about the high levels of Cesium 137 detected outside the 30km evacuation zone. They were reporting results from about 40km away from Daiichi.
There's high and then there's high. Cesium 137 is a beta emitter. Not lethal at low levels:
[Link: en.wikipedia.org...]
But for a short time, its breakdown is a gamma emitter of barium. Nasty but short lived.

You say that as if Snot Hot Pockets are somehow bad.
Here's what's disgusting: people who voluntarily eat something they call "pizza" that happens on a crust as thick as a king-size mattress, possibly with things that are all fine and good on their own, but have no place on a pizza. Obvious examples include pineapple, jalapeños, and even friggin' gherkin pickles, for pete's sake. Blasphemous.

Speaking of anchovies
Bagna Cauda
* 3/4 cup olive oil
* 6 tablespoons (3/4 stick) unsalted butter, room temperature
* 12 anchovy fillets
* 6 large garlic cloves, chopped
* Assorted fresh vegetables, cut into bite-size pieces
* 1 1-pound loaf crusty Italian or French bread, cut into 2-inch sections
Heat oil on low heat, add butter, anchovies and garlic when the oil begins to boil. stir until anchovies have broken up completely. Serve like a fondue.

Interesting comment section from an article on Time.com What's behind the surge of Abortion Bills.
"From the data freeper actually didn't link to, including all their caveats.

.Abortion statistics and other data is intended to improve the accessibility of abortion statistics. It is under continuing development. The reader should be aware that abortion statistics are often hard to obtain, and those statistics that are available are frequently inaccurate.

For U.S. states, abortion ratios and percentages are based on abortion figures from different sources with different completeness; the mixed figures are not reliable time series.

Few pro-life organizations conduct their own statistical research, but such groups that make estimates of abortion numbers may also be inclined to accept higher figures as worst-case scenarios.

re: #517 Kragar (Proud to be Kafir)
Yeah, one wonders about these people. More from TN:
Sen. Bo Watson said Wednesday his bill letting teachers discuss “weaknesses” in “controversial” scientific theories in the classroom is not an attack on evolution, but critics denounce as a backdoor effort to undercut teaching of it in Tennessee public schools.
[...]
Speaking to reporters later, Watson, who was a biology major in college, said “evolution doesn’t explain everything. Currently evolution is the most legitimate scientific process that we have to explain how the world works around us. But there are competing ideas” such as creationism and intelligent design.
He said ideas don’t necessarily equate to scientific theory and may fall more into areas such as philosophy or religion.
“They may not meet the scientific standard, but if they come up in a science class ... and it’s not listed in the state’s curriculum, a teacher should not be off-putting and say that’s not in the curriculum — if you want to talk about intelligent design you should go down the hall to the religious studies class. Teachers should be able to say, look, there are people who view that as a competing idea.”
[...]
Some serious cognitive dissonance going on there.

You know, way back when, the RC had people put to death in attempts to nullify science--and eventually, THEY LOST THAT BATTLE.
don't people ever learn from history?

Some people learn their "history" from people like David Barton.
On a much better note than all the troubles and stupidity of the day...
Less than 12 hrs to the first pitches of opening day!

They're not allowed on my block.
Chief of police lives on the corner, 2 patrollmen on the block, 4 highway patrollmen in the 4 block neighborhood.
criminals are also stupid. Don't be like them.
LOCK YOUR CAR, LOCK YOUR HOUSE.

It doesn't matter where you live, criminals travel.
LOCK YOUR CAR, LOCK YOUR HOUSE.

Was worth the read. You should link that in the Pages.

Sad:
Up to 1,000 bodies left untouched near troubled nuke plant
Radiation fears have prevented authorities from collecting as many as 1,000 bodies of victims of the March 11 earthquake and tsunami from within the 20-kilometer-radius evacuation zone around the stricken Fukushima nuclear plant, police sources said Thursday. One of the sources said bodies had been ''exposed to high levels of radiation after death.'' The view was supported by the detection Sunday of elevated levels of radiation on a body found in Okuma, Fukushima Prefecture, about 5 km from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station.
The authorities are now considering how to collect the bodies, given fears that police officers, doctors and bereaved families may be exposed to radiation in retrieving the radiation-exposed bodies or at morgues, according to the sources.

La de da. So something pretty stupid on "House" last night. This time they took in some homeless guy with no insurance or anything and they kept running a billion tests on him even after he was first stabilized. I tells ya. That show is getting on my nerves. Fantasy land.
I see your point, but we're talking about House here--this is the man who once ruined an entire MRI machine by putting a corpse with a bullet in his head into it--having shot said corpse so it would have a bullet it in his head.
House is about House, not medicine.

They're attacking Charles for his DoJ post earlier today.
There seems to be a serious inability, with some people, to understand that 'the DoJ did nothing improper in dropping the case' does not mean 'it has been determined in a court of law that no crime was committed'.

By the way, do you know of any compact florescent or LED light bulbs that are not made in China. My father is willing to use advanced bulbs but is unwilling to buy those made in China. It's not bigotry, but he sees buying most Chinese goods as aiding a strategic rival.
Interesting. I also don't like buying Chinese goods, because I suspect them of having been made in labor camps.

Sorry for not seeing this earlier.
For now a big standout is Bridgelux. They are a Cali company that just opened a new manufacturing plant in the USA. They are going to try and keep the manufacturing in the US, if possible. There is an interview with the CEO in the following video where he expresses similar thoughts as your father.
