Tim Blair Phones in Another Smear

When rabid global warming deniers attack
Wingnuts • Views: 36,803

We all know that the right wing is constantly cooking up outrageous outrages about Barack Obama. But there’s also a little cottage industry of wingnut bloggers who perform the same function — directed at me.

Case in point, climate change denier and far right loon Tim Blair, who phones in another attack piece at his Australian blog to say I’m now changing my opinion about Dan Rather. Blair titles his mindless post: LITTLE DAN FOOTBALLS. Get it?

Seven years after CBS and Dan Rather were busted for airing fake memos about George W. Bush’s National Guard service, someone is making excuses: “In the case of the fake memos, CBS News wasn’t pushing something they knew to be false.”

That someone is reborn leftoid Charles Johnson, whose involvement in the case helped bring down Rather. He seems to regret it.

This quote comes from a comment in our thread about Fox News executive Bill Sammon’s promotion of the “Obama’s a socialist” meme, even though he didn’t believe it himself. Someone compared that incident to the Dan Rather/fake memos story, and I replied with the quote you see above — but as usual, the ever-dishonest Blair takes it out of context and distorts what I wrote.

Here’s the comment to which I replied:

That’s a given. “So what if Fox did it, all the ‘liberal’ news stations do it too!” My guess? They’ll point to Memogate as their proof…which, sadly, is a bit hard to argue against.

And here’s my full reply:

It’s different, though, because in case of the fake memos, CBS News wasn’t pushing something they knew to be false.

Notice that I didn’t even mention Dan Rather by name.

But this latest fake attack is even stupider than that, because I never claimed that Dan Rather or CBS News knew the memos were fakes. On the contrary, it’s quite clear, and always has been, that Rather and his producers were fooled by whoever created the fakes, and ran with the story without doing the proper diligence.

You really should try harder, Blair, you ignorant slut.

Subtlety is lost on these guys, Charles. They're too blinded by their "obvious truth" to see little details like that.

"Blair, you ignorant slut."

Now that's just uncalled for, nobody who is "ignorant" could have so purposely spliced your comment so as to give it exactly the opposite meaning it had.

Go team evil!

Fox news eclipsed Dan Rather long ago.

4 Obdicut  Thu, Mar 31, 2011 8:54:01am

Rather was a warning not to believe in things simply because we want them to be true. Rather did, and threw away a long journalistic career to do so. He failed himself and his duty to the public.

This Fox guy is openly celebrating that he was able to deceive the public. Rather goddamn different.

And what's going to happen to the Fox guy?

Nothing. Many of those who were incensed about Rather won't care, ironically for exactly that reason-- because they believe Obama is a socialist simply because they want it to be true.

After the infamous LGF blinking memo, didn't Rather and Mapes continue pushing the memo-is-real meme for several weeks/months?

Let's get a few things straight here.

Just because your computer can cut and paste text does not mean that you can change what other people say or write.

Nuance is not a dirty word. It's actually pretty integral to making logical comparisons.

and

Your theories are the worst kind of popular tripe, your methods are sloppy, and your conclusions are highly questionable! You are a poor scientist, Mr. Blair!

The idea that I "regret taking down Dan Rather" is ludicrous. I didn't expose those fake memos because I wanted to "take down Dan Rather." I have no animus toward Rather and never did. I did it because I care about the truth.

A quality that seems to have completely vanished from the right wing blogs.

OT, but I thought some folks might be interested:

There is a hearing today taking place in Congress re: climate change. It's mostly a dog and pony show promoted by Republicans, but there is one aspect that is shaping up to be quite interesting.

Anthony Watts - probably the most infamous climate change "skeptic" has been running an argument out there that widely cited temperate data are inaccurate do to an "urban heat island effect." Recently, there has been a well-funded and comprehensive attempt to re-evaluate temperature data by a Berkley-affiliated research team. Not long ago, Watts was talking up this research project because he thought it would confirm his arguments. Now that the team has reached preliminary results, he is arguing that their research process is flawed. Arguments persist on both sides of the "debate" about whether that team is partisan (Check out Climate Progress or WUWT for arguments made from either side). Anyway, I thought some folks here might like to see some comments at the hearings from the lead researcher on their preliminary results:

[Link: berkeleyearth.org...]

Let me now address the problem of Poor Temperature Station Quality

Many temperature stations in the U.S. are located near buildings, in parking lots, or close to heat sources. Anthony Watts and his team has shown that most of the current stations in the US Historical Climatology Network would be ranked “poor” by NOAA’s own standards, with error uncertainties up to 5 degrees C.

Did such poor station quality exaggerate the estimates of global warming? We’ve studied this issue, and our preliminary answer is no.
The Berkeley Earth analysis shows that over the past 50 years the poor stations in the U.S. network do not show greater warming than do the good stations. Thus, although poor station quality might affect absolute temperature, it does not appear to affect trends, and for global warming estimates, the trend is what is important.

Our key caveat is that our results are preliminary and have not yet been published in a peer reviewed journal. We have begun that process of submitting a paper to the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society, and we are preparing several additional papers for publication elsewhere.

NOAA has already published a similar conclusion – that station quality bias did not affect estimates of global warming – — based on a smaller set of stations, and Anthony Anthony Watts and his team have a paper submitted, which is in late stage peer review, using over 1000 stations, but it has not yet been accepted for publication and I am not at liberty to discuss their conclusions and how they might differ. We have looked only at average temperature changes, and additional data needs to be studied, to look at (forexample) changes in maximum and minimum temperatures.
In fact, in our preliminary analysis the good stations report more warming in the U.S. than the poor stations by 0.009 ± 0.009 degrees per decade, opposite to what might be expected, but also consistent with zero. We are currently checking these results and performing the calculation in several different ways. But we are consistently finding that there is no enhancement of global warming trends due to the inclusion of the poorly ranked US stations.

re: #8 Charles

Rather wouldn't have been canned by CBS had he utilized basic journalistic tools - like fact checking and evaluating the information before running with it. He and his producer ignored warning flags, and even after the flashing memo was produced by you, they still held to their claim that their piece was accurate, which it simply could not be because their evidence was concocted by someone with animus towards Bush and hoped that the story would sway people just days before a national election.

Rather's ignominious end at CBS is the result of his own bad decisions and refusal to face facts - that the memos were BS. Fact that happened to be uncovered by a number of folks who used to consider facts to be paramount.

17 researchok  Thu, Mar 31, 2011 9:08:46am

FOX got busted, a whole ot of people got upset.

Rather than piss on CJ and LGF, they all would have been better served had they brought up the journolist debacle- far more significant than the FOX story (and a matter reported on by CJ).

Instead, Blair, et al, would rather make the issue of journalist bias personal, which only goes to prove just how little they really care about the matter of journalistic integrity.

The Rathergate story is simple and clear.

CBS published the papers as real predicated on the word of a producer and Dan Rather.

CJ digitally examined the documents and presented his findings. They were not what they were represented to be.

CBS stood by the documents after being reassured by the producer they documents were legitimate.

CBS finally had the documents examined by their own experts, who confirmed CJ's analysis. It was only then they knew the documents were faked.

CBS backtracked (whether or not they should have verified the veracity of the documents before going public or immediately after the charges were raised is another matter. The fact remains that as soon as they found the documents to be faked, they pulled back).

Rather and Mapes refused to admit the documents were fakes and went to great lengths to defend themselves, finally resulting in the ludicrous 'fake but accurate' meme.

In any event, Blair could care less. He is constantly embarrassed by CJ and LGF busting his nonsense. For Blair him this is all personal. Accuracy and integrity are not his strong suits.

It is ironic that a proven hack like Blair claims piety even as he misrepresents the CJ role in Rathergate affair.

Deniers don't care.

They're already calling it a whitewash.

What's interesting is that they have formulated their opinions purely on some theoretical speculation that the UHI effect would alter the temperature data analysis. They haven't actually run numbers that show that to be the case. And when people do run the numbers, as was done before by NOAA and now by BEST, and actually show that the "bad" stations show more warming than the "good" stations, they simply won't believe the results.

It's always been a baffling complaint, since the problem is trends. A badly-positioned data collection point might collect higher-than-average data, but if it goes up over time, that's still a meaningful trend.

If I have my thermometer in the warmest room in the house, it's going to show warmer-than-average temperature. But it still is going to show hotter when the whole house is hotter, and colder when the whole house is colder.

Japan's Nuclear Rescuers: 'Inevitable Some of Them May Die Within Weeks'

Speaking tearfully through an interpreter by phone, the mother of a 32-year-old worker said: “My son and his colleagues have discussed it at length and they have committed themselves to die if necessary to save the nation.

“He told me they have accepted they will all probably die from radiation sickness in the short term or cancer in the long-term.”

The woman spoke to Fox News on the condition of anonymity because, she said, plant workers had been asked by management not to communicate with the media or share details with family members in order to minimize public panic.

She could not confirm if her son or other workers were already suffering from radiation sickness. But she added: “They have concluded between themselves that it is inevitable some of them may die within weeks or months. They know it is impossible for them not to have been exposed to lethal doses of radiation.”

Eric cantor has no idea how a law is enacted.

“What this bill says is it reiterates again the deadline, and that the Senate should act before the deadline, and that’s what the American people are expecting,” House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) said Wednesday morning at a news conference with other House Republican leaders. “The bill then says if the Senate does not act, then H.R. 1 [the House-passed bill that cuts $61 billion] will be the law of the land. In addition to that, it says that if all else fails, and the Senate brings about a shutdown, then members should not get their pay.”

Sure... if you want to isolate your audience even more. No, you don't make requests like that in a live theatre. The only requests you hear, before a show, known as the "nag" tape, is requests that refer to audio and visual recording (both for copyright purposes and safety) and possibly special announcements in regards to warning that their may be strobe lights used or gunfire during the show etc... but no, you don't ask people to remove their hats.

One would expect adults to think for themselves in that regards.

When the government speaks of "equality" they mean that every person deserves an equal chance at certain basic rights. Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. There are a lot of things included in that, but of the most important are a fair wage to support your family and not to be discriminated against because of gender, religion or skin color.

We are not equal, of course. Some are richer, some are poorer, but if 10 people are applying for a job and those 10 people are equally qualified each of them should have the same chance despite the fact that some may be Jews or Blacks or Asians or something other than white males.

Yeah. The government shouldn't be in the business of taking care of its citizens personal lives. Instead, they should be in the business of taking care of people of other nations by way of wars and "nation building".

Could I ask for clarification?

Walter, did you mean that the worst of mankind's problems are usually directly related to human beings and our behavior,

or

did you mean that people's individual worst problems are usually directly related to their own nature and behavior...

or

both?

They're already calling it a whitewash.

What's interesting is that they have formulated their opinions purely on some theoretical speculation that the UHI effect would alter the temperature data analysis. They haven't actually run numbers that show that to be the case. And when people do run the numbers, as was done before by NOAA and now by BEST, and actually show that the "bad" stations show more warming than the "good" stations, they simply won't believe the results.

Data? I don't need no stinking data!

For you arachnaphobes out there,

Millions of Spiders in Pakistan Encase Entire Trees in Webs

With more than a fifth of the country submerged, millions of spiders climbed into trees to escape the rising floodwaters. The water took so long to recede, the trees became covered in a cocoon of spiderwebs. The result is an eerie, alien panorama, with any vegetation covered in a thick mass of webbing. (You can see images from the region in the gallery linked below.)

However, the unusual phenomenon may be a blessing in disguise. Britain’s department for international development reports that areas where the spiders have scaled the trees have seen far fewer malaria-spreading mosquitos than might be expected, given the prevalence of stagnant, standing water.

"There's a big debate over there," he said. "Fox News can't decide, what do they love more, bombing the Middle East or bashing the president? It's like I was over there and there was an anchor going, they were pleading, can't we do both? Can't we bomb the Middle East and bash the president at the same time? This is not true. Laws have a powerful normative function: "it's not OK to hate black people", "it's not OK to hate Jews" etc.

They also have a generational effect (though I accept that this is not exactly what you're talking about). Hence, attempts to influence the content of school textbooks via legislation.

I must admit, it's not fun to be out on a walk and feel that little piece of invisible string across your face that you can't possibly get off. I've had to do a lot of self-counseling to get over my arachnophobia. Basically that some spiders are quite pretty, their webs are pretty and they do eat ants and beetles (which I hate worse).

I've killed hundreds of black widow spiders. When I was a kid I had a job throwing hay to some horses and sheep, and every couple of weeks I'd dump out their troughs, which were old bathtubs, and scrub out the algae. There were always a bunch of black widows on the bottoms. I got used to them.

Except, some years ago, we had this one giant argiope that decided that the porch of my house looked like a super frame for a web. Right across the front. We would dismantle the web in the morning, and the spider would come back while we were at work, and rebuild it. This went on for weeks. I lived in terror of leaving the house in a hurry and walking into the spider.

OK, yeah. That makes me shiver even considering the concept. I'm pretty sure I'd live huddled as a ball on the floor in some very clean corner.

How lazy non-reporting about Obama's iPad became a Drudge/right-wing outrageous outrage meme

Joe Adalian took to Twitter yesterday to vent his frustration over one example of the modern distorted news cycle. In this case, it all started with a simple, innocent item about President Obama's iPad. By the time it was over, it had morphed into a made-up story about Obama cutting in line to grab an iPad -- and it had become an Internet meme thanks to NBC's Bay Area station, KNTV, which made a sloppy (and totally irrelevant) crack about Obama... which Fox News and the Drudge Report then ran with.

A blow-by-blow of how it went down, via Joe's Tweets

You can always tell when a story has been linked to by Drudge, because the reader comments are always 500% wingnuttier than average.

Main reason I will NEVER visit Japan. Ever.

If it's bitey stingy neurotoxic unkillable critters you fear, you'd best stay far away from Australia.

Normally found in the southern hemisphere in Tasmania and coastal and highland areas of Australia, the 36 species of funnel-web vary in sizes from 1.5 to 4.5 centimetres. Considered one of the most poisonous spiders in the world, their venom is enough to kill children and make the adults severely ill. The funnel-web spiders have derived their name from the fact that they build funnel shaped burrows.

Sydney funnel-web spiders and the northern tree funnel-web spiders are the only Australian funnel-web spiders to have inflicted deadly bites to humans. Sydney funnel-web spiders are mostly terrestrial spiders that favour moist sand and clays. The spiders are known to be very aggressive when provoked - they are attracted to water and survive up to twenty-four hours under water.

Kentucky Fried Spiders

From Bizarre Foods Part 2

Fried spider is a regional delicacy in Cambodia. In the Cambodian town of Skuon, locals eat fried spiders as an everyday snack. Spiders are also available elsewhere in Cambodia — in Phnom Penh for instance — but Skuon, a market town on the highway 75 kilometres (47 mi) from the capital, is the centre of their popularity. The spiders are bred in holes in the ground in villages north of Skuon, or foraged for in nearby forestland, and fried in oil. It is not clear how this practice started, but some have suggested that the population might have started eating spiders out of desperation during the years of Khmer Rouge rule, when food was in short supply.

Spiders are amazing. However, they scare the living shit out of me. I like the big argiopes that live hereabouts because they're strictly outdoor spiders, and I do not run the risk of one being in my house, or, God forbid, BEING ON ME.

4th biggest animal in my house was a big female wolf spider that lived in the basement. Didn't back down from me, or the cats. Have a picture around somewhere of it while it was carrying an eggcase. Was probably making a good living on the field crickets.

Outside bricks and window frames of the house were home to lots of jumping spiders (teeny to 3/4" in body length). They were a hoot to watch. One night a small one was in the house on my computer screen - chasing the cursor.

Watching spiders is neat. I must have a thing for observing predators at that scale since I think dragonflies, tiger beetles, ant lions, and praying mantis(es?) are all pretty cool as well.

re: #339 prononymous

I had a mantis shrimp named thumper for several years. He (she?) was an incredibly fascinating critter, and frighteningly intelligent. He hitched a ride into my reef tank on a piece of live rock, and took me a few weeks to devise a trap to catch him. So, I set up a little 20 gallon tank just for him, where he lived on a diet of shrimp and snails.

It's a bit of a spooky feeling to walk past a tank with a mantis shrimp in it, only to realize that it is tracking you with it's little eyes, watching you as you walk past his tank. After a couple of months, he learned what it meant when I would open my fridge (visible from the tank) to pull out a frozen shrimp to feed him. Every time I opened my fridge, he would start darting around the tank excitedly. He knew it was feeding time.

Weiner, who has been on a bit of a comedic kick lately, mocked himself heartily: he started his speech, "I want to keep my remarks brief, because I'm double parked outside and the last thing I need is a ticket," referring to his owing $2,180 in unpaid Washington DC parking tickets. He joked about his last name (his great-grandfather, who "changed" his last name, was "Harold Shmuck"), and recommended that John Boehner "embrace" his funny-sounding name as well. He talked about his belief in "mandatory gay marriage," and had this yuck about Michelle Bachmann: "Michelle Bachmann...she's probably not here. She's campaigning in Iowa, and organizing in that important caucus state, because she's running for president. [pause] That's all I have for that joke."

They absolutely can. When my wife opens the fridge, he doesn't respond, at all. She has never fed him. (She's terrified to put her hand anywhere near the tank after seeing what he can do to a snail) The interesting thing is, he never made any attempt to attack my hand. He kept a wide berth when I cleaned the tank, but he would watch my hand like a hawk the whole time I was in there. Feeding was done by sticking his shrimp on the end of a skewer and holding it just outside the entrance to one of his many burrows. He would just reach out and grab it. As for his snail treats, well, he would just relentlessly smash the crap out of them until the shell was in little pieces.

They definitely are a huge problem in a reef tank. (well, they don't bother the corals, but anything that moves on its own, they will kill) But, in a tank by themselves (or with only sessile invertebrates) they are every bit as cool as any of the corals, imo.

That Rather still thinks the way he does indicates to me that he isn't very good journalist material. Certainly not worthy of having any kind of major public forum. Neither are most other "journalists" out there at the moment, IMO.

But did he or CBS forge or know the documents were forged? It's possible. But if that is the case it has never been proven and would be illogical to think that was a statement of fact. They could just be gullible dimwits.

Dan Rather, by the way, is not all there, and hasn't been for quite some time. I'm surprised more people don't mention the way he slurs his words and sometimes appears disoriented. He may have some kind of medical condition, possibly dementia or Alzheimer's.

Well, I admit that I haven't seen much at all of Rather in years (Even before the whole debacle, I didn't really follow CBS for news). If he is, indeed, suffering from the onset of something like that, it would certainly go a very long way towards explaining all of this.

He makes the point over and over that Israel is the only country in the Middle East where Arabs, who make up 20% of the population, enjoy full rights. It was an Arab judge who recently presided over a sexual harassment case brought against the former president of Israel. Good point.

But ... creationists who honestly believe creationism have to be brought up in a culture of such denial, from childhood. As for anthropogenic climate change deniers, that's a somewhat different case. There is an enormous spectrum of those, because there is a wide spectrum of things that some people deny. At one end of the spectrum (e.g. conspiracy theorists, or people who deny laws of physics), they are exactly like creationists. At the other (e.g. professionals who favour a longer timescale for warming than the consensus timescale because they disagree about the relative importance of some of the phenomena involved), they are simply scientists doing their job.

No way.

And here's why: the key fact about those documents was that the forgery was laughably obvious. Nobody plants documents that are obvious fakes. All it would have taken for the plot to be exposed was one person who knew the difference between typewritten text and computer printed fonts. With a presidential election on the line, nobody is stupid enough to try something like that.

It's one of the major media fails of all time that nobody in the whole editorial chain at CBS News smelled something fishy. But it's incompetence, not a Karl Rove conspiracy.

There was a conspiracy on somebody's part -- probably Bill Burkett. But it was a very very lame conspiracy.

Here's the post Tim Blair thinks proves I'm a liar when I say CBS News didn't know the documents were false:

[Link: littlegreenfootballs.com...]

The post is about producer Mary Mapes. Tim quotes these words:

Rather’s producer, Mary Mapes, knew all along that the premise of the report was false.

And he insinuates that this shows Mapes deliberately promoted documents she knew were fake.

But that's not at all what the quote is really about. The article I posted about, by Bernard Goldberg, points out that the investigation showed that Mary Mapes was informed by several people prior to the 60 Minutes broadcast that GW Bush had volunteered for Vietnam.

Neither my post nor the article I linked makes any claim that Mapes knew the documents were frauds. But I did ask that question:

It does raise an interesting question, though: since Mapes was apparently willing to cover up what she knew about Bush volunteering for Vietnam, did she also know all along that the documents were frauds? Most people have assumed that Mapes and CBS were tricked into airing the memos — but what if it was deliberate?

So now, because I asked a pretty obvious question before any facts were known about the origin of the documents, I'm supposed to be "lying" when I say CBS didn't know they were frauds.

re: #429 Charles

I'd have been very surprised if Mapes or anyone else at CBS had known that the documents were modern forgeries. Of course, I was also surprised that a lot of people on the Left went after that issue so hard, as if whether Bush fulfilled his service well or on the sly long ago really mattered to the person he is now.

Sometimes the campaign seemed to belong more to the 60s and 70s than it did to the modern age; the Swiftboating of Kerry wasn't as clear-cut as the Rather documents, but it, too, was a strange and savagely fraudulent affair.

Well, I'd be a bit careful about reading too far into that. While I've certainly seen a far greater amount of blatant falsehoods circulating about Obama, I think the disparity may be somewhat inflated due to the population of Snopes leaning to the left (Or, at least, not being radicals), which may make them a bit more active in picking out things targetting Obama. Sure, they enjoy regulating them, but don't say that horrible, horrible word in front of delicate little Congressional pages:

Democrat chastized for saying 'uterus' on House floor

During last week's discussion about a bill that would prohibit governments from deducting union dues from a worker's paycheck, state Rep. Scott Randolph, D-Orlando, used his time during floor debate to argue that Republicans are against regulations -- except when it comes to the little guys, or serves their specific interests.

At one point Randolph suggested that his wife "incorporate her uterus" to stop Republicans from pushing measures that would restrict abortions. Republicans, after all, wouldn't want to further regulate a Florida business.

"It's not like I used slang," said Randolph, who actually got the line from his wife. He said Republicans voiced concern about young pages hearing the word uterus.

"I think it's a sad commentary about what we think about sex education in the state," he said.

Ashkelon is a beautiful city on the Mediterranean Coast. Remember when Israel uprooted thousands of Jews from Gaza amidst all kinds of promises that Gaza would finally be pacified? Gaza now has missiles that could reach Tel Aviv.

Sure, they enjoy regulating them, but don't say that horrible, horrible word in front of delicate little Congressional pages:

Democrat chastized for saying 'uterus' on House floor

Oh my stars and garters! *faints*

There's a vas deferens between a uterus and a Republican.

I'm basically staring at my screen dumbfounded at that. What the hell. Are they all 4 years old?

Um...I believe House Pages are normally high school juniors? At least in the U.S. House they are. I think sixteen or seventeen is old enough to hear the word 'uterus' in conversation.

They seem rather sheltered. Otherwise you wonder how their security doesn't have to pull them, comatose, from every public restroom they have ever used.

I'd give them (the politicians) an age of about 14. Maybe 15 and home schooled by creationist parents who at worst used the phrase 'baby bump'.

I think 4 or 5 is old enough to hear uterus, penis, vagina, anus and all those other nasty words describing body parts other than arms legs and heads.

Well, me too, but I don't want to stress out the Florida Lege too much. They seem kind of delicate.

It's a great line, too.

I just wonder what happens when their daughters start to hit puberty. That must be really double extra awkward. I can see it now: "Mom/Dad! I'm bleedi-" "We don't talk about that in this house."

"But, but, am I going to die?"
"Yes, you are going to die. Now go to your room and pray that you don't. Thank Jesus if you live."

re: #426 ShiksaGrrrl

Charles:

I have been a follower of your blog since the very day of 911 under the name of Shiksa Grrrl and was quite an avid poster and loved LGF but left it or about 2006 after having becoming quite tired with the increasingly rabid right wing.
As a supporter of Israel, although a Gentile, like yourself but not a practicing Christian, I thought you and I shared a similar mind-set but felt i must have been wrong and left LGF for several years.
I have only just stumbled upon the news of what happened with your views, your blog and many on the right and I am glad to see that I was right about you all along and now have come back to LGF and look forward to more centrist type views.

Although I identified myself as a Conservative after 911, I too became disenchanted with them just like yourself. I commend you for having stood by your principles, even at a time it must have been extremely difficult to have done so, with former friends you could not longer communicate with.

Welcome back.

I agree a whole lot with what 'Shiksagrrl', said Charles...
You're a good dude.

Rachel Maddow seems to be one of the most thoughtful people I have ever seen on the Tube.
OT but she is good.

It's a good thing the Right "brought down" Dan Rather. Now the big bad MSM™ can't be blamed as the demon it once was. Oh wait....
