Steely Dan: Godwhacker

In the beginning we could hang with the Dude
Music • Views: 35,651

Today’s musical interlude: the in-house video feed and live stereo board mix from Steely Dan’s 2003 concert at the Pine Knob Amphitheater in Clarkston, Michigan. (I’ve played this stage many times myself with various artists; it’s a great venue with excellent technical facilities.)

The song is “Godwhacker” from Everything Must Go.

De Mistura spoke in a somber tone as he described how three U.N. staff members and four Nepalese guards were killed Friday when the protesters stormed their compound in the normally peaceful city of Mazar-i-Sharif. He placed direct blame on those who burned a copy of the Muslim holy book in Gainesville, Florida, last month, stoking anti-foreign sentiment that already was on the rise after nearly a decade of war in Afghanistan.

Another death threat from an unhinged freak?

Mackinac Center Received Bomb Threats and Death Threats Over FOIA Request

The Mackinac Center for Public Policy received numerous death threats and bomb threats in the aftermath of national publicity about a Freedom of Information Act request it sent to three public universities.

The messages were left on the Center's voice mail Thursday night and early Friday morning, but it is unclear at this point if one or two women were responsible for the threats.

Mackinac Center President Joseph Lehman said the Mackinac Center has contacted law enforcement about the threats.

...In one message, a female voice said: “Scotty Walker is dead. So are you. We know where you live.” The woman then recited the Mackinac Center’s address and said, “We are coming up to destroy you.”

In another message, a female who left her name said: “You are on Main Street. You are the first place to be bombed.”

In another message, a female voice said: “We are going to destroy everybody. We are going to destroy all of you. All of you die. Midland, Michigan. Get ready. We are going to destroy all of you.”

Charlie Sheen takes stage in Detroit: 'I'm a giant and leaky bag of mayhem'

10:05 — More comments from people leaving early: “I was expecting a comedy show.” “It’s just like hanging out at his house.”

10:03 — The show is now an unmitigated disaster. People are leaving early. Attendee Chris Acchione, who came all the way from Toronto for the show, says, “He’s making a fool of himself. Is there a bigger loser in the world?”

9:50 — The show appears to be almost over. More padding.

9:43 — Sheen tells the audience, “You paid your hard-earned money without knowing what this show was about.” He asks if people have any questions. A girl from the audience asks for his best pornstar story. Sheen doesn’t want to tell that one. He’s starts telling a story about getting his car stolen — he says the story involves crack — but nobody wants to hear it.

9:40 — Sheen says he’s going to “Tell some stories about crack. I figured Detroit was a good place to tell some crack stories. Show of hands who here has tried crack? I don’t do crack anymore, but this is a good f—ing night to do some crack.” The audience boos.

9:35 — The show started late and has become a padded and disjointed mess. Currently onstage, an old lame movie starring Johnny Depp is playing. (I think the film is called RPG?) People are booing. Sheen stops the video and says, “Okay, so RPG was a bomb. Tonight is an experiment.” This is a disaster.

9:23 — We are watching video of Charlie Sheen playing Call of Duty.

9:20 — People start booing. Sheen yells, “I already got your money, dude!”

9:18 – “Nothing terrifies a troll more than its own reflection,” Sheen continues, before shifting gears into politics. “In a recent poll, they told me I’d bring down that whore Palin. I don’t have time for that nonsense.” [Read about the poll he's referring to here.]

9:15 — Nobody understands a word Sheen is saying. “”Is anybody else as confused by this s— as I am?” he finally asks. There are roars from the crowd. “I wrote every word!”

Sold Out? Not So Much
Charlie Sheen tweeted two weeks ago that the first two concerts from his Violent Torpedo of Truth tour sold out, reportedly in 18 minutes, but five days before the first show in Detroit, that doesn’t seem to be the case. Not only are tickets are still available on Ticketmaster, but the secondary ticket market, which includes online ticket exchanges like Stubhub.com and TicketNetwork.com, has been inundated with unwanted tickets often going for less than face value.

It didn't take long for the good will to fade, though, as audience members at the Fox Theatre began yelling at the former "Two and a Half Men" star for refunds and walking out in droves.

Sheen quipped after an audience member booed: "I've already got your money, dude."

Ooo that Charlie Sheen. He's one class act!

Rugby star stalks and kills daughter's rapists

A famous former rugby player has been arrested in South Africa after allegedly butchering at least three people to death with an axe.

A newspaper claimed the unnamed 34-year-old sportsman had launched a murderous rampage in revenge after his daughter was gang-raped and infected with HIV.

Afrikaans daily Beeld reported that one of the star's alleged victims had been decapitated during a string of brutal attacks which happened last week near Durban in South Africa's eastern KwaZulu-Natal province.

It is believed the man's head was found at least a mile away from his body in a separate suburb of the Indian Ocean city.

Anyone still desperate for work?

Japan Plant Offers 'Jumpers' $5K a Day for Hazard Duty

How on earth do the operators of Japan's nuclear plant convince workers to risk their lives exposing themselves to huge doses of radiation? Money helps, apparently. TEPCO officials are advertising for so-called "jumpers" to carry out dangerous jobs for up to $5,000 a day, reports Reuters. They're called jumpers because they jump in to a contaminated area, complete a task, then race out. For many, it's not worth it.

"Ordinarily I'd consider that a dream job, but my wife was in tears and stopped me, so I declined," one would-be contract worker told a Japanese newspaper.

Missing workers found dead at Japan nuclear plant

Two missing Fukushima nuclear plant workers were found dead on Sunday as more highly radioactive water spilled into the sea and authorities struggled to seal the leak.

Japan's Kyodo news agency quoted the Tokyo Electric Power Co., which owns the plant, as saying the workers had been found. No other information of the discovery was given. The workers had been missing since a hydrogen explosion at the plant.

Hello, I'm ok. It is my understanding that a Muslim considers the word of Allah to be so holy, that even the actual, printed words in a book are to be considered as holy. So, it is a desecration when a Koran is burned.

And I think when it's done in Gaza, it's done to scare the Christians and remind them to keep their heads down.

Well, the quote I heard recounted to me was "You live by the cross, you will die by the cross."
This happened to an oil industry colleague of a woman I met in Scotland. He was executed in Saudi Arabia for proselytizing.

Ay, gottenyu.

So far the show is pretty lame.

Elton's monologue was pretty good.

The KY thing was stupid.

then why, pray tell, do we allow our citizens to legally burn the Koran?

Because freedom of speech has to mean freedom of speech against religion.

I hope it's just one distressed woman who can't control herself with the phone instead of a group of radicals who mean to do real violence.

I'm betting on the former, but I hope the appropriate authorities are checking to make sure it's not the latter.

This is a press release (cached version) of his statement about his actions.

He is outside the boundaries of free speech, and there are boundaries.

He totally wants to start a race war. But if he didn't do it, I'm pretty sure the people who fired up those mobs would find or invent something else.

Doesn't let Jones off the hook any, morally speaking.

Apparently, yes.

I found a lot of other hits as well, mostly in Pakistan and Saudi, but this was the only one from a source I felt could be linked to. Free Republic, for example, is NOT a source I feel comfortable citing.

Here's one from the NY Post:

Malawi Muslims burning Bibles

LILONGWE, Malawi -- Muslims in southern Malawi have been burning Bibles to protest their distribution in Islamic schools by Gideon's International, a Muslim Association of Malawi official said yesterday.

The Bibles "annoyed some parents and other leaders, who have resorted to burning the holy books . . . in protest," said Sheik Imran Sharif.

He said the burning of bibles was carried out by a few Muslim fanatics, and the association has ordered them to stop.

I don't know. If the violence occurred domestically, there might be a debate about it.

He did it specifically to incite deadly violence. It was the goal. He was pretty blatant about it.

I think the screaming "fire" in a crowded theatre test applies.

Yes, but we can't silence an American to appease foreigners. It would be a public display of weakness and capitulation.

I think it's too close to a slippery slope, although the intent to incite violence is probably legally relevant.

More than that, we can't compromise the First Amendment out of fear of violence. If we establish that you can't burn a Koran because Afghanis will riot, does that mean you CAN burn a Bible...until a significant number of Christians somewhere riot? If I kill enough people in response to Stormfront's site, can I get them shut down?

(Not planning to, BTW.)

We can't establish a system whereby you can exempt your group from being the legal target of hate speech by killing a bunch of people. It's not fair to the Jains.

No, I didn't mean to imply that. But I don't think it's basic freedom of speech issues because It happened internationally for one. Secondly, you have President Karzai who's been pissed at us for quite awhile and vice versa. It's a bad situation there, worse than I think most people realize.

I don't think that is an apples to apples comparison. She didn't intentionally write that book in order to incite violence.

remember the kid that was held captive for so many years til discovered and rescued from the freak that knapped him?...he was under guard walking through an airport when the kids dad stepped up and put a bullet in his head, killing him?...he was cut loose, no charges...the murder was caught live on tape

This isn't exactly accurate.

This is the kid who was molested. [Link: www.jodyplauche.com...]

1. The case took place in Baton Rouge--Ryan Airport at the time (Metro now)...and it took place on Friday, March 16th, 1984 around 9:30pm.

2. I am the boy--and my mother and father have NEVER been divorced...as a matter of fact they are still married to this day. At the time they were seperated, but the kidnapper was not my mother's boyfriend! He was my Karate teacher and it was not until after the shooting that his lawyers claimed that my mother and him were boyfriend and girlfriend.

3. As for my mother being in on it...NO WAY! She is the one who called the police and then my father...in that order. There were many hours of taped phone conversations with the kidnapper saying we were in New York when we were really in California.

4. We were tracked down by a collect phone call. My mother asked for "time and charges" and when the operator came back on...she gave the address and the motel room # we were staying at...The Soama Motel in Anehiem, CA--room 38.

5. The sexual abuse was not a rumor--it was a proven scientific fact! I was taken to the hospital and given a rape kit which found spermatazoa on the rectal slide. The sexual abuse had taken place for almost a year "before" the kidnapping. As a matter of fact--the kidnapper lost his sex drive and only molested me a few times over the 10 days I was gone. I have the hospital report--I will post it on my website.

6. My dad did lose it...but that was after finding out details of the abuse. And he shot and killed him in the Baton Rouge airport..in front of TV camera's...ironically enough---he found out the time of the kidnappers arrival from the same news station!

7. He was not found "Not Guilty"! He plead "No contest" to manslaughter and was sentenced to hard time..suspended to 5 years probation and 300 hours of community service.

If anyone has anymore questions about the case...email me and I will answer any question! My website is: [Link: www.jodyplauche.com...]

Slavery is immoral. That's another issue altogether.

This isn't just an American issue, it's an international one. I don't know what that means, really because we would deal with it here differently. If someone ended up killing others here because of what Jones did, he, too, can be held liable for incitement.

Sure, slavery is immoral. Jones thinks Islam is immoral. I agree with Mrs. Stowe, and disagree with him, but rights is rights.

I think what we're reaching for here is the distinction between the right to say something even though others may commit violence over it, and actually inciting same violence.

It's also they way to tyranny. So I agree with you: No legal action can or should be taken against Terry Jones. But every news outlet from Fox News to Mother Jones should denounce him as the hateful bigot he is and he should be shunned as much as the law allows.

Hate law is sticky. Remember the bruhaha in San Diego at the UC campus when there was a noose hanging in the library at a time of racial instability? The student was suspended.

I don't think we get to say anything or do anything we want and not suffer some sort of consequences. What those consequences are in this case, I don't know.
