I have had this problem with Mozilla Camino, but I think what is going on is a cookie issue, as my preferences are set to only accept cookies from sites I visit.

If I change my preferences to accept cookies from any site, then the embedded video plays normally.

Yeah, but if you check higher, by 1942, there was enough penicillin in the world to treat ten patients.

So far, Hollywood hasn't been able to ruin any comic book mythos.

Sam Raimi:
Spiderman - yay
Spiderman II - yay
Spiderman III - you have got to be fucking kidding me.

Tim Burton:
BATMAN: - hmm, Michael Keaton? ok, we'll see... NOT COMPLETELY BAD!
(everything after BATMAN): WTF IS THIS SHIT?

Fantastic 4 pre-release buzz:
OH SHIT THERE'S GOING TO BE A SILVER SURFER MOVIE, OMFG
release day: you have got to be fucking kidding me.

X-MEN:
What a great cast! I have minor quabbles but otherwise I hereby dual-wield heavy metal devil horn hand gestures in your direction.
X-MEN II: a sequel that could have sucked but didn't. It was actually pretty good!
X-MEN III: You have got to be fucking kidding me...

Batman Begins:
*remember "Batman: Year One" comics* so perfect!
The Dark Knight:
Best interpretation of Joker imaginable. Two-Face is also great, but dead. Batman himself is wisely not the main character of the film.
Third installment will either be amazing, or unforgivably shitty.

I also like the Iron Man films so far. Of course, the 2nd one wasn't as satisfying as the first, so I'm sure I'll hate the third.

Blah blah, never mind.

Any lizards want to take a crack at his one? Geraldo does have a history of faking news coverage and this doesn't look right....
Geraldo Caught in the Middle of a Fire Fight in Libya

I realize he's pretty old but that's not the kind of running someone under fire would do. Also he gets on the ground in the open, not near one of the many nearby trees. He says, "I was just afraid of getting shot in the back by the rebels as getting shot in the front by Q'Daffy's forces. That means he's running towards the Q'Daffy forces as they fire on him. If you make it to about 3:00 you can see the camera taking cover behind a wall. The rebels are standing in the open firing in the air. The wall would provide no cover from the pro-government forces so if that's who they're hiding from they are on the wrong side of the wall.

Warner Brothers seems better about it to a degree, at least as far as letting the Nolan Brothers exert a great deal of control over the Batman reboot. Paramount doesn't seem to understand that you can't pump out a major motion picture in under a year, or that stars want to do things other than appear in the same film over and over again.

If you create a page for it you can upload the photo to LGF. Go to LGF Pages (big button at top), then click Create A Page in the right column. A window opens with the form to post an LGF Page. Click the button at bottom left that says "Upload Image," then select and upload the image file.

Then click the button to insert the image code into the page editing box. Give it a title and a category and maybe some kind of description, and submit it.

It's the standard HTML uploading process, which is actually a common cause of confusion. You have to first choose the file on your computer, using the system file selector. Then you can click the Upload button. It's a two-step process.

Also if the file is too large you get a "no file selected" error. It's happened to me before.

Yeah, the standard HTML upload form basically sucks. Bad error-handling combined with confusing interface, combined with slightly different implementations across browsers.

It's pretty much the only way to do it, though. There are Flash-based solutions, but relying on Flash has its own problems.

You got to check online for play thru times and replay value. The problem with most straight up shooters is you run them once and you're done.

That's why you get the PC version, then download a shitload of mods. Hell, believe it or not, there's people out there who've figured out how to install mods to the XBox 360, being nothing more than a gaming computer itself. How To Be a Single Male After Age 30 Whether You Want To Be Or Not:

1) possess a modest and adequate (but MERELY adequate) number of dollars
2) be happily child-free, and express (when asked) that you are not even slightly interested in having children, and are in fact rather vehemently opposed to the notion
3) fail to love her parents every bit as much as she loves them

Just NV.

You haven't lived until you played the whole game as a pacifist.

And then there was the time I cleared the whole NCR prison with only a tire iron.

I couldn't do a pure pacifist run, but I do plug a lot of skill points into speech, science, and other skills to avoid fights and such. Plus getting some of the best endings.

Speaking of endings, I really need to start up a new game eventually. Still have to work towards the House and Caesar's Legion endings.

I used to try to see how far I could get in Grand Theft Auto without running afoul of the law or doing anything unduly violent.

It's useful that once you've jacked a taxi or ambulance, the game will permit you to take its calls and make pick-ups with it, thereby providing you with a quasi-legal source of income.

Watching the repeat of Friday's Bill Maher show. He joked about Donald Trump and then, after joking about his hotel service's birth certificates, said "I'm only joking. I wouldn't stay at a Trump hotel." Then he said he used to stay at Trump hotels all the time, but that he won't support a "birther hotel"...that little spear could fly a bit.

I play the lotto. I play 20 draws at a time, and check my numbers about every 35 or 50 draws...so I miss a few. When I win (and I will win - whether I have a ticket that day or not is another story) I'm going to do something. More than a few have wound up filing bankruptcy within a year or so, others have been murdered or had attempts on their lives, and one sorry sack I read about ended up losing the majority of it in divorce court.

He bought himself a motorcycle today.

I'd really like to start a website that listed the estimated bills for each episode. Then I'd like to buy commercial time (here's that lotto winning going down the toilet again) after each show to say, "Without Obamacare, this show would have cost you, as the patient, $342,592 dollars."

I want to thank everyone for the positive response to my message #119 on the last thread.

I also wanted to share a strange insight that occurred to me while I was re-reading it just now, one that may be difficult to explain. It had to do with my use of the first person in the narrative,"I happened to be flying," "I saw," etc.
What seemed strange, almost uncanny, was the realization that the confident boy-pilot of 1972 and the gray-haired grandfather of today really are one and the same. That is me in my memory, though so very different and living in a different world. The impression lasted for just a second: Of course the older people among us are the same individuals they were 40 years ago. They are very different in many ways as well though. I suspect that many people who are fortunate enough to live into their 60s have the same kind of feeling when they examine the deeper reaches of living memory.

I admit, I don't watch House anymore for the medical drama portion of it, but more to see where his life is going to go this week. There's no doubt doctors across the country who tune in every night, and by the end of episode, think to themselves "If I pulled that shit, I'd be out of the building with a pink slip by lunch time."

And notice there's never a portion of the episode where House or one of the crew comes in and says that the very expensive test they need to perform has been denied by the insurance company. Or talk about whether or not he's hit his "lifetime limit" and will need to start paying out of pocket for everything down to the cotton swaps they're using on him.

Hell, even last week the patient was a homeless guy. The response when he says that he's not going to let them do anything to him that he'll have to pay for? "I don't think they have a collection agency in the park."

Yeah. That was a trip. A homeless guy who they didn't discharge after they stabilized his symptoms. Before that they had some barely employed bass player. Too late. We've reached the point where people want to be entertained all of the time. It begins soon after the child is born and plopped in front of TV to be "entertained" nearly 24/7.

Looks to me like Paliwood meets Al Capone's Vault.

It's a very curious thing, this passage of time that we're all doing.

What really freaks me out is how well I remember the 1950s and the Eisenhower administration. Recent generations are fortunate compared to their ancestors in that technology has provided a comprehensive and accurate visual record of the past century or so: film, videotape, really good photographs and, now, various digital media.
Pulling up an actual memory of 1959 is not the same as seeing a film of it though. On film, the strangeness jumps out at you, tail-finned cars, odd clothes, unfamiliar signs, things like that. In my memories, they don't jump out even though I can clearly remember what things and people looked like. I suppose this is because in real memory these things are not strange, the present in the memory was the norm. Giant tail-fins and frumpy '47 Buicks do not seem strange in memory because they were not strange at the time. Beyond that, as an adult of advanced years I would probably see things in pictures that I would not have noticed as a child. My fifth grade teacher, a Miss Peake, was a very attractive woman and I had a minor crush on her. I don't remember anything about how she dressed though. It would probably make for a strikingly retro picture. She would now be about 77 years old.

I've been over at his blog and he claims that he has been "censored" by the monitors at Krugman's blog because they recognized his name and/or were worried about the damaging implications of a comment that he left on the blog.

I've been trying to explain to him that he isn't quite as famous as he thinks - and it is highly unlikely that the reason his post didn't go through was because his name was recognized or because:

When someone makes a subtle point beyond their control, they snip it.

Anyway, I'd appreciate any answers "Yay," or "Nay," as to whether folks here recognize his name.

Reading is typically the best alternative to being "entertained". But I haven't had a TV in years. Cable since the mid 90s and that was just for a short while. Read a lot of books a couple of years ago. It's actually rather difficult for people to quit the TV habit. I remember the first few week of not having a TV around and suddenly hearing my internal voice so to speak. TV has a bad habit of curtailing our ability to think.

I've been trying to explain to him that he isn't quite as famous as he thinks - and it is highly unlikely that the reason his post didn't go through was because his name was recognized or because:

Anyway, I'd appreciate any answers "Yay," or "Nay," as to whether folks here recognize his name.

Thanks.

I don't recognize him, but it sounds like what Deniers and Creationists say. They spout BS repeatedly and when the moderators get sick of repeatedly explaining why its BS and start deleting posts by the Denier, the Denier Troll starts shouting that its being "censored".

Oh but the price of software and hardware! I know. I can't complain too much. Back in the day all it took was a quick trip to the art store to get some paint, illustration board, colored pencils, etc. 100 bucks and you were in like Flint. Now, you have to spend 1000s but there are ways around it. Some day I'll have that super computer with all the fixings but for now this old boat will have to do.

Yeah, it's absolutely amazing what can be accomplished these days with a home PC. I remember reading stories about the computer farm it took just to do the few minutes of CGI in movies in the late 80s and early 90s, then see movies with the same level of sophistication or better done by a guy on his single computer during his spare time.

From what I've read, apparently the real difficulty in creating human "skin" a CGI character has to do with the unique properties of our skin. Such as a sort of "transparency" that the top layer possesses, that a computer right now can't mimic. Or our brain's inability to accept a face that's flawless.

re: #175 Targetpractice, Worst of Both Worlds

I admit, I don't watch House anymore for the medical drama portion of it, but more to see where his life is going to go this week. There's no doubt doctors across the country who tune in every night, and by the end of episode, think to themselves "If I pulled that shit, I'd be out of the building with a pink slip by lunch time."

This reminds me of something I actually witnessed way back in 1980. I was in grad school and worked part-time as a security guard in an ER. We had a doctor who seemed personable enough but who had had a couple of patients storm out on him. We didn't know why because they hadn't stayed around to explain and never bothered to file complaints. Then one night a woman came in who had attempted suicide by taking a bottle of pills. The doc was mad because it was 3AM, he had been sound asleep in the doctor's lounge, and I woke him up to attend to her. He eventually got her fixed up. As she was leaving he walked up to her in the lobby, in front of God and everybody, and said, "Next time why don't you save us all some trouble and use a gun."
She started hitting, cursing, and pushing him. She was a big woman, around 300 pounds, and he was a little guy, maybe 5'4" and 130 pounds soaking wet. She pushed him into a corner and continued to whale away. He looked at me and screamed, "Officer, are you just going to let her do this?!" To tell the truth, I was considering it. Duty is duty though so I got her under control and drug her outside. She didn't resist, which was just as well given her size and temper. Once outside I said, "Look, lady, I know the guy's a jerk but you can't beat people up in here, it's against the law." I told her how to file a complaint and promised that I would give the management an accurate report. She did, I did, and the doctor was indeed fired.

Back in Japan:

Gov't eyes use of huge sheet to contain radioactive substances

The government has asked Tokyo Electric Power Co., operator of the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, to study the possibility of containing radioactive substances from four damaged reactors by wrapping their entire containment buildings with a huge amount of sheeting, government sources said Sunday.

The proposal calls for building framed structures around the 45-meter-high containment buildings and then wrapping them with the sheeting, the sources said.

If all of the four buildings were wrapped in this manner, it would cost about 80 billion yen and take up to two months, the sources said.

But atomic energy experts are skeptical about the feasibility of the plan, proposed by a general construction firm, saying the step would have only limited effects in blocking the release of radioactive substances into the environment.

Osaka University professor emeritus Keiji Miyazaki said that there is the risk that such sheeting would be torn apart by heat emanating from nuclear reactors. [...]

Ritsumeikan University professor emeritus Ikuro Anzai said if sheeting-based containment were technically possible [...] added that there is the risk that radiation levels would go up inside the sheeting, thus hampering various restoration work, including the work to spray water onto the reactors.

A source close to the government criticized its latest move, saying, ''Politicians and the TEPCO management adopted the proposal from the major construction company which does not have deep knowledge about nuclear power plants.''

''This step is essentially lip service to give the public a sense of ease by hiding the image of the decrepit nuclear plant,'' the source said.

At least this proposal is getting the criticism it deserves.

In Japanese politics, the nation's construction industry are among the most powerful of the lobbies, especially when it comes to domestic spending.

I've also been told, by a friend who works for a small construction company, that many construction companies are the laundry service for the Japanese mob's money.

True. Interestingly, since the show ended its male young leads have had more success than their female counterparts. Though some of that is attributable to Mischa Barton's serious personal problems. She actually has talent and the way she's wasted it saddens me. But Ben McKenzie actually has a better role now than he did on The OC. Officer Ben Sherman has a much greater range of emotions and opportunities for an actor to use his talents than Ryan Atwood did during the first 3 seasons of the OC. It was only in the final season that the show really allowed McKinzie's character to grow and change/

The ER could be nerve-wracking at times but it was an authentic chance to do people some real, immediate good. I worked with a young doctor who happens now, 30 years later, to be my family doctor. Just the other day, he had an intern with him when I went in for something or other. Possibly to show primitive it used to be, he regaled her with a story about how he and I had manhandled an unconscious heart attack victim out of the cab of his friend's pickup and carried him bodily into the ER. The guy survived.

my dad went into arrest as my mom flew into the ER...CPR saved him for another 30yrs....my ER nurse ex wife saved a guys life sitting atop of him on a cart while he was transported from the ER to surgery, two floors up....time is life

That often happens. American audiences tend not to like tragic endings. That's why the adaptations of The Pledge and Insomnia didn't do very well. People here are raised on the "good guys" being flawed but ultimately winning. The idea of them dying or losing is not well received here.

My favorite ER story is the day I had to take The Princess, then 4, into the in her Royal Blue Princess Dress because she had a bead stuck up her nose. It was shiny gold.

She blew it out before they got to us, but not before she had made everyone's day.

My sister did the same thing at around the same age. Sadly for her, it didn't dislodge itself before the doctor got around to seeing her...

Gov't eyes use of huge sheet to contain radioactive substances

At least this proposal is getting the criticism it deserves.

In Japanese politics, the nation's construction industry are among the most powerful of the lobbies, especially when it comes to domestic spending.

I've also been told, by a friend who works for a small construction company, that many construction companies are the laundry service for the Japanese mob's money.

Yeah, my mother likes to needle her from time to time about that incident, especially the part about how she had to hold her down while the doctor used a small hook to pull it out.

You have to remember that soldiers are taught, from the moment that they handle a rifle, to aim for center mass. Same with cops and others in uniform trusted with firearms. re: #330 albusteve

which means nothing to me

Interesting note--this is the passage which provides the modern Hebrew word for 'electricity'.

I looked, and I saw a windstorm coming out of the north—an immense cloud with flashing lightning and surrounded by brilliant light. The center of the fire looked like glowing metal, and in the fire was what looked like four living creatures. In appearance their form was human, but each of them had four faces and four wings. Their legs were straight; their feet were like those of a calf and gleamed like burnished bronze. Under their wings on their four sides they had human hands. All four of them had faces and wings, and the wings of one touched the wings of another. Each one went straight ahead; they did not turn as they moved.

Their faces looked like this: Each of the four had the face of a human being, and on the right side each had the face of a lion, and on the left the face of an ox; each also had the face of an eagle. Such were their faces. They each had two wings spreading out upward, each wing touching that of the creature on either side; and each had two other wings covering its body. Each one went straight ahead. Wherever the spirit would go, they would go, without turning as they went. The appearance of the living creatures was like burning coals of fire or like torches. Fire moved back and forth among the creatures; it was bright, and lightning flashed out of it. The creatures sped back and forth like flashes of lightning.

As I looked at the living creatures, I saw a wheel on the ground beside each creature with its four faces. This was the appearance and structure of the wheels: They sparkled like topaz, and all four looked alike. Each appeared to be made like a wheel intersecting a wheel. As they moved, they would go in any one of the four directions the creatures faced; the wheels did not change direction as the creatures went. Their rims were high and awesome, and all four rims were full of eyes all around.

When the living creatures moved, the wheels beside them moved; and when the living creatures rose from the ground, the wheels also rose. Wherever the spirit would go, they would go, and the wheels would rise along with them, because the spirit of the living creatures was in the wheels. When the creatures moved, they also moved; when the creatures stood still, they also stood still; and when the creatures rose from the ground, the wheels rose along with them, because the spirit of the living creatures was in the wheels.

Spread out above the heads of the living creatures was what looked something like a vault, sparkling like crystal, and awesome. Under the vault their wings were stretched out one toward the other, and each had two wings covering its body. When the creatures moved, I heard the sound of their wings, like the roar of rushing waters, like the voice of the Almighty, like the tumult of an army. When they stood still, they lowered their wings.

Then there came a voice from above the vault over their heads as they stood with lowered wings. Above the vault over their heads was what looked like a throne of lapis lazuli, and high above on the throne was a figure like that of a man. I saw that from what appeared to be his waist up he looked like glowing metal, as if full of fire, and that from there down he looked like fire; and brilliant light surrounded him. Like the appearance of a rainbow in the clouds on a rainy day, so was the radiance around him.

One of the most overplayed tropes, really. Either humanity has made it to the stars and we're seen as an "upstart race" that's not far removed from its savage past. Or we're put "on trial" for such savagery and have to prove we can overcome it or be destroyed.

Yeah, but even then, the human head is not exactly a large target. Especially not if you're aiming at a moving one. And even harder to a soldier that's been trained to take care of targets quickly, instead of slow, precision shots.

True. Best best is a M110 Designated Marksman's Rifle. 7.62mm instead of 5.56mm, great optics, and the same ambidextrous fire controls as an M-16 (I'm left handed).

One of the most overplayed tropes, really. Either humanity has made it to the stars and we're seen as an "upstart race" that's not far removed from its savage past. Or we're put "on trial" for such savagery and have to prove we can overcome it or be destroyed.

Yeah, but we invent villains that are more agressive and warlike than us, as if this were possible for a species to be and still achieve space flight.

re: #355 EmmmieG

I've always thought that it would make a great sci fi series that the universe has its eyes on a very dangerous, unstable, war-like species that must be kept to its planet at all costs.

Us.

When we try to deny it, they show us video of people being hacked to death with machetes in Africa, or gassed in WWII, or...pretty much the whole campaign against kulaks in Soviet Russia, and ask us to explain.

We can't. Not really.

The Doctor has a better vision of us.

But that brings up another question for me. Think of the image of 'warrior races' in sci fi. Everyone in the society always appears to be perfectly on board with the fighting ethos, and you're never shown the endless misery these people must cause to their own species and everyone else's. Oh, Star Trek tried, kind of.

We are a 'warrior race'. And most of us who aren't Nazis or Attila the Hun aren't so happy about it.

there was a great version of that on the old superman tv show of the 50s. superman asks the aliens why they haven't contacted man before. the aliens say that the first time they came we were at war (film clips from world war one). they waited twenty years and came back, but we were still at war (film clips of world war two)

Such civilizations are usually included in scifi as a contrast on "emotional" humans, as well as a means of tackling major scientific problems by simply having a character who's smarter than the rest of the cast.

Generally, to show that "humans are the norm," we find out that such species were once warlike in the past and only seem unemotional due to the fact that they have emotions far stronger but have to keep them under check.

Yeah, Gene tried that for the first two seasons of The Next Generation, arguing that by the time of the series, humanity had put away a lot of its problems and become more "civilized."

That and his pushing on the studio that one of the Trek movies deal with time travel and the JFK assassination is what led him to being made an "executive consultant," and putting the series in charge of guys like Rick Berman and Brannon Braga.

For years I've been trying to locate a sci-fi story that I'm becoming less and less sure that I've actually read. I seem to believe I found it in OMNI or the short-lived Twilight Zone Magazine.

The story goes something like this:

An astronaut is on a solo mission on the moon, doing astronaut stuff and looking forward to coming home. While he's up there, the political situation back on Earth rapidly deteriorates and from his vantage point the astronaut can see the nuclear explosions happening all over Earth's land masses.

Eventually, the astronaut comes to realize that he, alone on the moon, might actually be the last living human. So he turns on his radio and begins broadcasting out to the stars every bit of information he can think of, in a desperate attempt to convey to some hypothetical SETI program that humans once existed. The last thing he says before his oxygen runs out is a knock-knock joke.

I'd really like to read this again.

I wouldn't put it that way. It is a perfectly sensible move for a company funding a movie, game, etc to want to make as much money as they can on their investment. One of the common ways to do that is to try to make your potential audience as broad as possible.

Most modern rounds pack their own oxidizer, though whether the bullet would actually work is still a matter of debate. And there's also the matter of whether the gun will operate correctly in the absence of 1g of gravity.

True that. We were giving them away back then. Old Garands still turn up from time to time, with more than one being found in Iraq. I saw a photo of one such find late last year. As an American rifle used in battle by our Armed Force, it was treated with reverence in the photo, or at least that is how it seemed to me. I believe it was used subsequently by the soldiers who found it till they had to leave it there upon their return home as a target shooter. They wanted to know how the rifle their grandfathers had used shot and handled.

I saw that. I think it BS, especially for the Garands. Since the Garand cannot hold more than 8 rounds, nor can it accept a detachable magazine, it is no species of "assault weapon". I'd also argue for the carbines being imported, though in their case I can at least see a counter argument. But I see no problem with that import, and I think that if those guns are not destroyed, a future Republican president should allow them in.

The thing about the carbine is that it's small and can take a folding stock and 30 round mag. So even though I don't think their importation or sale should be restricted (beyond the normal forms and Instant Checks of course), I can see how it could be used as a crime gun.

I've shot the carbine a few times...too light, but spot on regarding the rifle...I'd love to own one and if I hadn't get sick I would have

In the jungle you usually can't see out to a click. Plenty of marines chose the carbine in the Pacific because it was effective at the most commonly engaged distance, was lighter, and held much more ammo. Also, unlike the Garand it can fire rifle grenades without having to lock the action. You don't have to fire it until empty to load the grenade launching cartridge, and can immediately pick it up and start firing semi-auto again after you've fired the grenade without having to remove the adaptor.

You can also hand a .30 carbine to an eight year old and expect effective covering fire. I have the luxury of owning both, but if I had to pick one it'd probably be the carbine.

Yes, but that's a full-auto weapon and thus a very different animal. It also has an undeniable history as a crime gun. I would be OK with allowing a number to be imported and sold to civilians, but it would take an act of Congress. And while I'd support that act of Congress, said Thompsons would need to be registered with the ATF (I support that, given the public danger posed by a full-auto weapon).

This was long before the official development of the M2. He was so sad they didn't let him take it home after the war ended.

Yeah I know. It seemed kind of crazy to me too but apparently it worked. Remember that the .30 carbine is a small bullet and the magazines load double-stack, so the spring isn't traveling as far as one might imagine. I imagine that it was a pretty tight wind though since it was supplying 11 rounds per second on average.

Maybe. But the M1 is much more reliable than the Tiger was. it's also faster than most of the tanks it might fight and its turret traverses faster.

Yeah. It's not like we're going to relive WWII anytime soon. It is kind of unfortunate to see it being used for mine sweeping duty though. I still wouldn't want to get hit with a 500 pounder below me even in an M1.

The M1 was designed to fight a delaying war against Soviet armor in the Fulda Gap, not a prolonged stand-up war that requires movement over more than a few miles. The gas turbine's there for speed, not endurance, hence why you have to have a wagon train of fuel trucks following any advance of the beasts to keep them topped off.

The Skyraider's big claim to fame was being a bomb truck that could stay on station for extended periods. The A-10's a dedicated tank killer than can use its GAU-8 to open them like tin cans, light them up with Maverick missiles, or drop JDAMs down atop their heads. Not to mention that it can fly home with more holes through it than a screen door and without hydraulics to control it.

For AK-47s? Perhaps but they'll be using up a lot ammo. I think it's ideal for the GWOT. Cheap, easy to fly and maintain. A proven platform and like the A-10 built like a tank. Too late I suppose. Maybe a modern version.

Yeah, but the A-10 won't get a chance to use its Avenger in Libya. The Air Force won't let A-10s go low enough to use it. They don't want to lose a pilot, since that would cause political damage (or at least it is thought that it would).

Then why the frak would they deploy it there? What point is there to deploying a plane that was basically built around it's gun when you won't let the pilots fly low enough to put it to good use? That's like deploying B-52s, but not letting them drop any bombs.

The point is to say they're there. The West wants Gaddafi gone, but is not willing to take risks to do so. In the US and UK, war weariness is much of the reason. Much of the public doesn't want to hear about yet another military mission, and they don't want any more soldiers to die. Thus if we suffer losses, the politicians are afraid support for the action will crater.

It's insanely overbuilt and least likely to let its pilot come to harm. The administration is really dreading the idea of US casualties in Libya, they pitching for a perfect game.

To be expected, really. Obama's afraid of being seen as a "hypocrite" if he pushes for more than just lip-service to seeing Gaddafi removed from power, but the half-hearted measures in place are doing little more than draining money and morale. He wants to replay Clinton's "success" in Kosovo, but doesn't want to open himself to the same charges of going to war over "false pretenses."

I can understand that. He's in a different circumstance than Clinton, in any case. Clinton was in his second half of his second term, with a hostile Congress. Since he could not run again, and could not accomplish anything domestically, he turned to foreign affairs to build his legacy.

Obama, by contrast, must face the voters next year. Thus he doesn't not want to run any risks or give Republicans any angles with which to mount an effective negative campaign. He's not playing to win as much as playing to 'not lose'.

Also in play is the fact that no one is willing to arm the rebels because of concern about where those arms might end up. If an anti-tank missile given to the rebels ended up being used by Al Qaeda, there would be Hell to pay politically.

It's also the question of "What Next?" We train the rebels, shove a bunch of weapons in their hands, then come election time next year, we're looking at a new Iran sitting where Libya used to be. I hate to be a buzzkill, but America doesn't exactly have the most stellar track record when it comes to supporting rebellions against governments we dislike.
