Donald Trump’s Birther Lunacy is Working

The base is nuts
Politics • Views: 20,247

You may think Donald Trump is a self-promoting clown who doesn’t have a chance to win the GOP’s presidential nomination.

But that’s because you’re not a Birther — unlike 42% of the Republican voters in New Hampshire.

Romney leads the first-in-the-nation primary contest in a multitude of scenarios involving difference candidates, often by as much as a 2-1 margin, according to a survey out Tuesday from Public Policy Polling. But when Trump gets into the race, Romney’s edge shrinks to 6 points, 27 percent to 21 percent.

If Trump isn’t included in the survey, Romney draws 32 percent of the vote, with Mike Huckabee a distant second at 15 percent.

The difference is the birthers: The Democratic polling shop found that Trump leads Romney among those who doubt President Barack Obama’s citizenship 22 percent to 21 percent. A previous PPP survey found that 42 percent of New Hampshire GOPers don’t believe Obama was born in America.

It'll be interesting to see what position Romney takes on the birther "issue". Romney is famous for pandering. He seems to regard himself as so righteous, that it's OK for him to change his positions, because it's for a good cause (himself). But he's so famous for pandering, that if he comes out and says there's a legitimate controversy about Obama's birthplace, this could be a "pander too far", and doom his presidential hopes. Romney is probably twisting himself into a pretzel right about now, trying to figure out which position he should take.

Did anyone really think being a birther wouldn't help Trump with the GOP base? He read the numerous polls showing that nearly half of the GOP are birthers and he went with it to gain credibility with them.

This is actually not surprising at all.

Birtherism: It works
Really pathetic that it does but I can't say I am shocked.

Romney has been very quiet as of late. I think he's such and empty suit, flip flopping used car salesman he doesn't want to state an opinion about anything until he has to. I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't run at all.

Doesn't matter . He's rich and white so the GOP base doesn't doubt that he's a real American. To beclown himself is to earn street cred with the base.

It's something I wonder about since Romney is the biggest panderer/flip flopper of the bunch but I think he's also the least stupid of the group too.

The primary system needs to be changed. States should not be allowed to go first more than once, until they've all had a turn.

Right now, the system is set to deliver another nut as the Republican candidate. That might be good for Obama, but in the long run we can't afford to have one of the two major parties so far out on the fringe.

If this is truly self evident with the GOP base then he may as well STFU and STFD because he couldn't possibly win the nomination. The only way he wins is if a bunch of independents participate in open primary states. He has to talk the bases' language even if he does so in code speak and a calm demeanor.

Donald is nothing more than a socialite--right up there with Kim Kardashian. He knows he has absolutely no chance of winning an election (at ANY level of public office) so I think he's trying to be as sensationalist as possible and just ride the gravy train of populism to keep him relevant so he can bask in his continuum of 15 minutes of fame.. I don't want to give him any credit because I think he's an idiot, but I don't think he's naive enough to believe all of the nonsense that spews from his mouth. Once election time comes around people's views align a little bit more with reality.

re: #18 recusancy

Do you think it would change if another state was first?

Only if "first" were rotated.

The candidates would not know what to expect in a state other than New Hampshire or Iowa. Right now those states have a bunch of organizations set up for the candidates to appear before and pander to. Other states would have different organizations. The wingers would have to scramble to get any other state as organized as they are in the current "first" states.

Donald is the fourth of five children of Fred Trump, a real-estate developer based in New York City and self-made millionaire. Donald was strongly influenced by his father in his eventual goals to make a career in real estate development,[8] and upon his graduation from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in 1968, Donald Trump joined his father's company, Elizabeth Trump & Son;[9] taking its helm in 1971 and rechristening it The Trump Organization.[10][11]

Starting with the renovation of the Commodore Hotel into the Grand Hyatt with the Pritzker family, he continued with Trump Tower in New York City and several other residential projects. Trump would later expand into the airline industry (buying the Eastern Shuttle routes),[12] and Atlantic City casino business, including buying the Taj Mahal Casino from the Crosby family, then taking it into bankruptcy. This expansion, both personal and business, led to mounting debt.[13] Much of the news about him in the early 1990s involved his much publicized financial problems, creditor-led bailout, extramarital affair with Marla Maples (whom he later married), and the resulting divorce from his first wife, Ivana Trump.

Very little of the immense quantities of fearmongering that's been pushed by the Right since before Obama got elected has actually come to pass?

So why should we choose one of these idiots over someone with a track record of actually doing what he says he'll do (given the opportunity) for a bunch of clowns who haven't delivered on any of their promises?

Exactly this. It would be hilarious that Trump is running if it wasn't for the fact he is actually considered a viable candidate. In response to that reality I will do my best to make sure he never attains the office. From talking about it on blogs/forums and volunteering for good causes to voting as I feel appropriate. Darth, you are sadly naive. While it's a well known fact that the Birther movement is at its base racist, Trump is a *celebrity*. He will be able to say "I'm just asking a question! Why won't Obama answer it?" to put The Controversy (as in the classic Teach The Controversy!) to rest. This is classic bullshit in modern politics. I don't think the Democrats mind one bit. Birtherism (and the associated "Obama's a Muslim" meme) alienates:

-African Americans (whose citizenship has questioned and denied time and again).
-Hispanics (who are often the children of first generation immigrants, married to first generation, or first generation parents of natural born citzens. They know the same smear will be run against them or their children if they have the audacity to run for president).
-Asians, Arabs, Africans and other immigrants communities (ditto)
-Muslims (try telling them that saying Obama's a Muslim is in no way a smear).
-Independents and moderates who might be tempted to cross over tp the GOP.

I could go with the "sacrifice" Ryan's plan demands of the 95% of us if the top 5% was also asked to "sacrifice" even a little bit.

Also, he doesn't have an aneurysm every time you mention John Kerry. Or sunspots.

Or some remote snow station in Oregon. I loved TFK for the humor factor. He really *was* the Gabby Johnson ("Thank you for that authentic frontier gibberish") of LGF.

But he was also just as crazy as a shit-house mouse.

And, as we say in Texas whenever we talk trash about someone, no matter how well deserved, "Bless his heart!"

The fact that Obama's birth certificate is still an issue in 2011 is goddamn pathetic. Has it never dawned on any of these shit for brains GOP primary voters that Barack Obama would have undergone background checks when he got into the Senate so he could get his security clearances?

The very idea that we could still be talking about that nonsense in the next election cycle is nauseating. I hope this bites the GOP in the ass hard, and that Obama gets re-elected, just to make all the birther heads explode at once.

I don't know. I only know he's Walker's man, and I'm pulling for Walker.

My suburb had school board elections today, and I was uncharacteristically not voting. Low money reserves and a desire not to miss work were the reasons, though not having kids at school played the key role.

Why can't men just accept their baldness with dignity? Why do they have to battle their baldness with money?

My dad and his millionaire brother both inherited the male pattern baldness gene, but while my dad gracefully accepted his bald head, my uncle had hair transplants, hair plugs, and now, at 82 years old, wears a really cheesy toupee.

214 Dark_Falcon  Tue, Apr 5, 2011 7:32:18pm

David Frum on Paul Ryan:

Paul Ryan, House Budget Committee Chairman and realist, has taken the great leap. He has publicly proposed a budget resolution for Fiscal Year 2012 that directly takes on Medicare and Medicaid, the two great drivers of the impending American debt crisis.

Ryan’s become the first elected federal official with any position of responsibility who’s decided to break the cone of silence surrounding the ugly and simple truth—you cannot put the United States back on a sound fiscal track unless you admit that the government has made promises that it cannot keep.

Some have already criticized the Ryan Plan: it doesn’t address tax increases; it hits the elderly; it breaks promises we have made to those who pay the payroll tax; it’s unrealistic.

Shortly after Ryan released his budget plan, the President and Republican leaders met at the White House. Ostensibly the meeting was about the seventh Continuing Resolution for FY11 appropriations. The meeting though really foreshadows the larger questions that will surround the FY12 budget and the upcoming attempt by Congress to raise the federal debt limit.

And, no deal emerged from that meeting. Indeed, only snide remarks and political posturing made news. But, sorrowfully, no one expected much more.

We have talked before about the difficult challenge House Speaker Boehner has before him—trying to get Republicans of “form” to agree with Republicans of substance. So far, the Michelle Bachmanns of the world have garnered most of the momentum—that is, from the Republicans for political advantage and “form.” Now Ryan has spoken for Republicans of substance—that is, Republicans for serious fiscal reform.

I bolded the last paragraph of that excerpt because I feel its important. Paul Ryan is a serious policy thinker, he's not a mindless DERPer. Regardless of whether you like his budget proposal, we should all wish for leaders like him to prevail internally within the GOP.

Well, Jamie Lee Curtis went grey without complaint. Of course, being an actress she also used the fact that she did did to get magazine articles, but actors and actresses will do a lot to get attention. She claimed she was retiring from acting, but those mags got her a role in the comedy You Again late last year. So talking about growing old gracefully landed her a movie role that paid her more for 2 1/2 month's work than most of us will see in 5 years. Nice work if you can get it.

Republicans for serious fiscal reform

all this talk from republicans about getting serious about balancing the budget is so much horseshit until they start acting like adults and accept that we need to raise revenue to pay for the things we have all agreed that we need

if they think they are fooling people with their proposals to balance the budget on the backs of working people, the elderly, and children just so that they can preserve those precious tax cuts for those making over $250k/yr, they have another thing coming

It could be serious if the wingnuts survive this. It'll embolden other states.

I don't think it has any affect at all. The only issue is whether the vote was held in accordance with their open meetings law. Worse-case scenario for Walker is he passes it again and avoids the whole argument.

re: #246 Dark_Falcon

That works when applied to the SAG (which Reagan served as its president), less so when applied to government workers.

Dark I spent some time today marching with my Mom and Dad to help support my mom who might be finding her job as an IT tech at a high school suddenly becoming considered a "part time" position (with a large pay cut) because there aren't enough (850 last time I checked) students attending her high school.

So your argument that collective bargaining among government employees has allowed said employees too much power is sort of falling on deaf ears....

And how do teachers protect them themselves from being fired at the whim of an administrator that doesn't like them. Also, how do we defend the teaching of evolution if teachers are under threat of parents?

Your partisanship is showing through. And what makes you think the Republicans will stop at Teachers Unions? They will go after Labor outright. And because of their support for Democrats, I guarantee you won't do anything, speaking up or otherwise.

There's also a County Executive race (Walker's seat before he became governor); the Democrat (Abele) is smushing the Republican (Stone), 61%-39%.

I must say I had to plug my nose to vote for Abele. The election is only for one year though. If he can't cut it he will be easily replaced.

Federal law protects the right to form a union. Nor has Governor Walker done anything to 'go after' private sector unions.

As for how people protect themselves against a boss who doesn't like you?

I decline to answer.

It can serve a social organization, and may organize politically (I've got no problem with union's engaging in political activity if the funds used were solicited freely given for that purpose).

That's nice Dark, but a Union isn't a country club, it exists primarily to help the people who make it up get a fair shake together at work.

If you take away a union's right to collectively bargain on many issues (and tie the ones that it still can bargain together on to the inflation rate so that they can't rise above it...) well Dark what would you get out of being a member of that Union?

Big voter turnout in Wisconsin/Dane county:

Voters have packed the polls throughout Dane County, with turnout that could reach 70 percent in Madison, said city clerk Maribeth Witzel-Behl.

By 4 p.m. Tuesday, turnout numbers in Madison and the rest of the county already exceeded typical spring turnout of 20 percent to 25 percent. In the city, 35 percent of voters had cast ballots. In the rest of the county, 31 percent had voted.

Typically, the 4 p.m. turnout doubles by day's end, Witzel-Behl said. If that pattern holds, Madison will see 70 percent turnout. Karen Peters, deputy clerk for Dane County, said she expected about 45 percent turnout in the county.[Link: host.madison.com...]

What budget follies? Seems like a ridiculous talking point. The Republicans are more interested in attacking Planned Parenthood, AARP and PBS than they are in actually balancing the budget. The only person you should be pissed at is yourself for supporting such ignorant fools.

You already know this, two million federal employees (excluding postal workers and uniformed military), just like the teachers in WI cannot bargain for wages. Washington, D.C. is, in the purest sense, a "right to work zone." These Federal employees are not compelled to join a union, nor to pay union dues.

And they haven't since Jimmy Carter took those "rights" away. And yet the unions survive just fine.

David Frum on Paul Ryan:

I bolded the last paragraph of that excerpt because I feel its important. Paul Ryan is a serious policy thinker, he's not a mindless DERPer. Regardless of whether you like his budget proposal, we should all wish for leaders like him to prevail internally within the GOP.

I don't care how much of a "serious" thinker the guys like Frum or Broder or Sullivan think Ryan is...unless he asks for the rich to "sacrifice" as much as the rest of us he is full of just more Republican BS.

Donald Trump is a self-promoting clown who doesn’t have a chance of being elected president.

Although Donald Trump has a small chance of winning the GOP’s presidential nomination, I am confident that some other self-promoting clown will defeat him in the primary.
