The Pure Cognitive Dissonance of Religious Fanatics

The GOP will stop at nothing to control women’s bodies
Politics • Views: 35,511

It’s gone beyond ridiculous, to a tragicomic Theatre of the Fanatically Absurd.

The Republican Party is preparing to shut down the government in order to stop Planned Parenthood from destroying America.

It’s not even about abortion; Planned Parenthood is already prohibited from using federal funds for abortions. The “party of limited government” is preparing to do incalculable harm to the country in order to prevent women from having access to contraception and basic health services.

How does making it difficult to get contraceptives decrease the number of abortions? Well, of course, it won’t. What you’re seeing is an outbreak of pure cognitive dissonance, fueled by the dominance of the GOP by religious fanatics.

I wish you wouldn’t use such offensive terminology. The proper term is “baby shitter”.

I didn’t expect them to drop the mask so completely, and admit that this is not, actually, about the budget.

This is about being anti-woman, and anti-science. About defunding Planned Parenthood, defunding food programs, and defunding the EPA.

Because, apparently, god hates women and humanity and wants us to face the worst aspects of AGW while eighteen year old girls try to raise their third child, drinking dirty water and wondering how they’re going to get the next meal on the table.

I’m prepared to live in a GOP theocracy….it’d serve us right, if voters are going to continue to revel in their ignorance than we just have to go with the flow…sad commentary on contemporary politics

What they don’t want to and cannot admit is this:
their real war is against sex outside of marriage.

Abortion is and always has been a false flag, it’s just most of them never knew that it was. The entire fight is for strict monotheistic morality and controlling people. In the minds of these fanatics, contraception = pre-marital sex, because to them, why in the world would a married couple ever want to use contraception?

All that to some degree, but this is really about revenge against PP for all the abortions they have performed.

If an organization existed that didn’t perform abortions, but did all the same services that PP does from a pro-life perspective, this wouldn’t be an issue except maybe for a couple of hard-core bible bangers and some Catholics.

First a thread on “booger,” now one on “uterus.”

But what else can you do on a day when everybody is gearing up for a shutdown? I still don’t think it will happen. The Republicans cannot let it happen, because it will be all to easy for the Democrats to conflate in the public mind the 2011 budget and the Ryan nightmare budget: “Look, the Tea Party shut down the government because they want to destroy Medicare.”

Even the wimpy Dem spin machine should be able to manage that one.

86 Kragar (Antichrist )  Fri, Apr 8, 2011 11:23:32am

I can see no way that this can possibly be controversial.

Jesus as an openly gay man

The most astounding finding from the newly discovered lead codices is that Jesus Christ was unambiguously and openly gay. He and his disciples formed a same-sex coterie, bound by feelings of love and mutual support. There are recorded instances of same-sex activity – the “beloved disciple” plays a significant role – and there is affirmation of the joys of friendship and of living and loving together.

A whole new complexion is given to that rather puzzling passage where Jesus exhorts his followers to break family ties: “If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.” (Luke 14, 26). It seems clear now that this is less a negative repudiation of family and more a positive exhortation to join in affirmation of a gay lifestyle and love.

There is at least one new parable, that of the two young men. There are clear echoes of the relationship between David and Jonathan, for Jesus speaks of one young man having his soul “knit with the soul” of the other, and loving him “as his own soul”. Intriguing is evidence that the Catholics might be closer to the truth about the status of Mary, the mother of Jesus, than are the Protestants. She has a much bigger role in the life of Jesus than many hitherto expected, with Jesus frequently returning home and making much of her.

I posted this yesterday, but it fits here.
This comment was on Ezra Klien’s blog about PP and what they really do:

“They use that ‘so much more’ to increase their abortion business. They promote promiscuous behaviors and reliance upon contraceptives. Over 50% of the women that come back to them for abortions had relied on contraceptives during the period of conception.”

Seriously.
How can you compromise with people who think like this.
And while no of them com out and say it what really annoys them is birth control because that allows SluttyMcSluts to have sex without paying the consequences since everyone knows sex is only for making babies within a God blessed marriage.

I have a fond story about the new planned parenthood building in Houston. When I first moved to Houston (1978) and I was just Young Steve at the time, I remember seeing them throw up some crappy ass five story bank building along the Gulf Freeway near U of H. There is sat slowly becoming blighted for 30 years. One day two years ago, driving by with my son, we saw a wrecking ball attacking the building. I remarked to son of Big Steve that I had gotten to witness the entire life cycle of that building. However weeks later going by again, I noticed that the facade had been removed but the steel structure remained. Weeks after that, they added more structure as well as more floors….and within six months a new building was born. It was the new Planned Parenthood building. The engineer in me was impressed by their desire to recycle an old building.

Slight error in the subtitle, Charles. This isn’t just about controlling a woman’s body. It’s about controlling women.

It’s not just about abortion or birth control. It’s about sending women back into the home and keeping them ignorant, barefoot, and pregnant.

THIS.

The Republican Party is preparing to shut down the government in order to stop Planned Parenthood from destroying America.

I’ve said it before but I think it’s worth repeating. These people want to “save” America the same way Ethan Edwards wanted to “save” Debbie from the Comanche in The Searchers.

This peculiar aspect of the conservative mindset has not change in over 50 years. It’s the same mindset that tried to save people from Communism by bombing them back to the stone age. If someone like this ever says they want to save you from something… run!

100 Eclectic Cyborg  Fri, Apr 8, 2011 11:32:39am

And here it comes to a head

The GOP knows that if they cave on the budget, their far right base will desert them and their chances at 2012 are ruined.

Therefore, they are looking to go ahead with the shutdown and find anyway possible to blame it on Obama and the Democrats.

And the truly disturbing part about this? It just might work.

OK I figured it out using some online calculator. The force of an object weighing 300 pounds dropped from 1 foot height (i.e. a small jump) equals 4064.6 Newtons or approximately 913.7 lbf (pounds-force). That’s a lot of lard.

Email from the DCCC:

Never in my lifetime have I seen Republicans in Congress so determined to deny women health care and family planning that they were willing to shut down the government just to advance their extreme social agenda.

Right now, the single most important thing we can do together is to hold them accountable.

The DCCC is just $29,281 short of their emergency Rapid Response goal of $100,000 by Midnight Tonight. Will you put us over the top?

Contribute $3 or more right now so we can get hard-hitting ads up to hold Tea Party extremists in Congress accountable for their radical assault on women’s health care and reproductive freedom.

Don’t be fooled by any of their rhetoric. The real reason that the right-wing extremists in Congress orchestrated this outrageous government shutdown is to try and defund Planned Parenthood as part of their ideological assault on women’s health care.

Millions of Americans rely on Planned Parenthood for lifesaving breast and cervical cancer screenings, family planning visits, and basic preventive care.

Every dollar you contribute will help us expose the real agenda of the Tea Party extremists and make sure they are held accountable like never before.

But time is running out. We must raise $100,000 by Midnight Tonight.

Thank you for standing strong.

Rep. Diana DeGette
Co-Chair of the House Pro-Choice Caucus

P.S. These Tea Party extremists in Congress are so determined to deny women health care and family planning services that they shut down the government just to advance their extreme social agenda. Help us raise $29,281 more by midnight tonight to hold them accountable.

Ayep. They punted on the $100 billion promise, and the Dems are balking even at the $60 billion that the Repubs dropped to. So now it’s a matter of hoping that they can build enough bad public sentiment against the Dems in the hopes of forcing them back to the table to accept more extensive cuts. The riders are a big part of it, but the biggest part of all this is saving face with the Tea Partiers.

Nickolaus said she forgot to click “save” in Microsoft Access to save the totals she had entered into the program. The problem? In no version of MS Access ever released do you have to click “save”. It saves data directly to the database as it is entered.

[Link: www.dailykos.com…]

There is a save in MS Access. I just checked it. The data is entered in to the DB as entered but, AFAIK that DB resides in memory. Saving commits changes to disk. If it’s connected to a MS SQL server or something, then the save would mean nothing except to maybe save a copy locally.

The “save” icon is if you make structural changes to the tables or the data format, but if you enter something into a table it gets saved automatically.

This is actual total bullshit. Access automatically saves if you move the insertion point to another record. 2:41 p.m. ET - The $100,000 to $400,000 life insurance death benefit for those killed in the line of duty will not be paid during a government shutdown, a defense official said Friday. About 100-150 claims are processed a month, generally quickly, to help meet expenses in days after the death. The official, who briefed reporters about the potential shutdown impact at the Pentagon on the condition the official’s name not be used, said it could lead to families having trouble meeting death expenses, the CNN Pentagon Unit reported. The official also said the money would be paid when the shutdown is completed.

There is a save function, but try to reproduce the behavior described in the DKos article. Can you enter data, close the program, and lose the data? It’s not working that way here. It seems like no matter what I do, the data is still there. I even tried a hard shutdown, and the data is still there. What gives?

It really depends if she was using a simply written Access application or some custom piece of Access software where the programmer is handling commits the database themselves.

If you simply create an Access table, and let Access design a data entry screen around that table, Access will also automatically include code that will write data directly to the table, almost in realtime, the actions you are describing above.

But if a programmer wants to control the data themselves, they can set up buffers and cursors where the data is stored (in memory so to speak), issue hard commits when the programmer wants the data to be flushed to the table and set up roll back points, so the data does not get written to the table and the table reverts back to a certain condition at a certain set point.

So, the answer to this question is more dependent on how Access was being used… a down and dirty data entry tool or as a full blow programmer designed application where the programmer coded in how the data is moved, from entry to a hard flush to the disk.

FYI.

Exactly….the data could have been entered on a front end form, designed by the programmer, so that non-access users could easily input data. That would also have a save function.

re: #222 Walter L. Newton

FYI.

So in other words, she’d need to be running a specially modified version of Access in order to get the results she said she did?

Well that sort of thing should be fairly easy to check shouldn’t it…?

I hope so. The Republicans are never going to get their wish to abolish planned parenthood and the EPA. If they go through with a shutdown it’s going to be very difficult to back down.

How do you negotiate with a suicidal hostage taker? That’s what these folks are, you know.

They have been told, and agree, that taking their demands will cause hundreds of thousands of jobs to be lost, that it will have a major negative hit to the economy, yet they still want their demands filled. If not filled they’re willing to destroy everyone anyway by ‘shutting it down’. “I get my way or we all die.”

They may or not be evil. They are, however, insane. And I have decided that I will work to defeat and destroy them.

This far. No further.

I was wondering why there wasn’t an outcry about those, but perhaps it was exactly for that reason that compromise could be reached. The Planned Parenthood thing has raised such a stink that it’s made it hard for either side to “back down.”

No James… Access is a database programming platform, with Visual Basic as the language behind the scenes. It has the ability to work in a full range of complexities, from very simple to a highly organized database management tool and language.

On the simply end, you create a table, tell Access to create a data entry form around the form, and there you have it, a screen (form) to add/deleted/modify data in a table. And Access will automatically take care of the data flow, including always saving data etc.

On the complex end, you can design and control everything that is happening in Access using the Visual Basic language and the form and report designer tools. You can control WHEN data is save, when data is deleted, when data is modified, when data is rolled back to a earlier version… in short, Access can be used (and it is) a professional database management programming platform.

Nothing special, nothing modified, the off the shelf Access does this.. I have worked for numerous middle sized firms, as an Access programmer, where the whole business is run on custom designed Access applications.

I’m not prepared to presume this was done in error, not only because of her past conduct but also because of how she handled the whole matter:

.According to 3 observers who attended the county vote canvass, the issue of 14,315 additional votes from Brookfield never came up in the room.
While it was hidden from the people in the room, others involved in the process, Charlie Sykes, a representative of the Wisconsin Policy Research Institute, National Review, and conservative bloggers had the story hours before it was announced.
· Kathy Nickolaus has a long history of questionable practices in vote counting. The issue of Nicklaus keeping records on her personal computer was central to the audit conducted on her last fall. Was the “human error” she is apologizing for her own personal error made on her personal computer? She has been repeatedly warned about the danger of that process and criticized for keeping information “secret” from even others with in her own office in the past.

I’m not accusing her of malfeasance, but it seems like a strong possibility.

Abortion Riders Prove Effective Wedge For Democrats in Government Shutdown Fight

A growing number of pro-life Republicans and conservative activists are publicly pressuring Boehner to drop the issue. Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK), known as one of the toughest social conservatives in Congress, told MSNBC’s Dylan Ratigan on April 6 that they were unrealistic demands.

“My recommendation to my friends in the House is, you know, it’s highly unlikely many riders are going to get passed with a Democrat president and Democrat Senate, so why don’t you take the spending and let’s get on to the budget,” he said.

How does cutting spending make a private company hire more people?

If there is no increase in demand for their products, nothing will make companies hire more people. This is why tax cuts for the rich won’t create jobs either. But hey the modern GOP exists to do four things: cut taxes for rich people, gut the social safety net for everyone else, regulate what people (especially women) should do with their private parts, and stoke the fears of older white Americans about changing demographics. And you can’t expect them to abandon their core principles and reasons for existence.

This is the part that I hope people are slowly waking up to. Money held more and more by one small fraction of society will slow, and eventually, kill the economy.

A woman getting food stamps spends that money in the domestic economy and it immediately starts traveling around. it is one of the best possible uses of government money.

And yet people call it an ‘entitlement’ and then everyone becomes convinced it’s all very expensive and insupportable.

Do you honestly think the work they would normally be doing during this time will do itself? They will have to pay back pay, and pay overtime to catch up on the backlog. Meanwhile, these employees will not be paid (retroactively) until the government is back up and running. So, not only will this increase the cost of government, but it will interrupt services for millions of people, and the pay for hundreds of thousands for an indefinite period of time.

Shutting the government down increases the cost of government, because the work these agencies do has to be done, late or not. Do you understand this?

Just for the record, there is no guarantee those furloughed will get paid retroactively. It happened last time, there’s no promise for this time. Equally worth noting is that contractors working for the government did NOT get paid for the furlough time last time.

The only people getting promises of payment are those being made to work anyway. Work now, pay when the money’s in.

Navy Federal to Advance Direct Deposit Pay for Active Duty Military Members

Navy Federal Credit Union, the world’s largest credit union, announced its plans today for supporting its members in the event of a possible government shutdown as of midnight April 8.

“We’re hopeful that Congress and the White House will come to an agreement to avoid a shutdown,” said Cutler Dawson, Navy Federal President and CEO. “At the same time, we want to support our members—especially our active duty military members—through this potentially challenging time. We want to ensure, to the extent possible, that our military families do not suffer financially in the wake of a political impasse.” Dawson went on to list steps Navy Federal is taking.

One major initiative is to cover the April 15 payroll for those active duty members who have their direct deposit of pay at Navy Federal. “By covering the mid-month pay, come April 15 our active duty members will not see a difference in their direct deposit amount, as if there were no shutdown,” added Dawson.

Nah, CNN anchors have been hammering that all day, actually. Gotta give them a little credit.

Democrats staying on message? LOL forever. Not gonna happen. Ever.

Thank the Flying Spaghetti Monster that Obama had a hell of a ground game that even ran circles around the vaunted Clinton machine. I hope he has just as good of a game in 2012. I hope they’re smart enough to not leave anything to chance.

I don’t think they will. But good Lord the Democrats couldn’t stay on message if it was glued and nailed to them. And the worst part is they wouldn’t even have to lie they could just tell the truth about the modern GOP. Just those four things need to be repeated over and over again.

The DNC is so notorious for lacking cohesion and discipline. It’s sad, really. So many times in my life I have seen them fail to take obvious political opportunities and run with them. It’s so frustrating to watch.

I have a little bit of hope now that Debbie Shultz will be in charge at the DNC. That woman knows how to deliver a good message and stay on it. I was very pleased by her choice. I also hope they put Elizabeth Warren out on TV a lot too. I know she’s busy at the new CPA, but she knows how to speak to middle and working class Americans.

I know you are being snarky, but that’s actually probably true. Putting people who hate government in charge of it doesn’t make a lot of sense to me. I wouldn’t put a person who hates animals in charge of an animal shelter.

House votes to repeal regs on Internet access

House Republicans have passed a bill to repeal federal rules barring Internet service providers from blocking or setting different prices for some uses of their networks, saying the government should keep its hands off the Internet.

Ok, that’s enough work for one day. We just lost power at the office with 20 minutes to go, and only 5-8 minutes of UPS power. So, i’m shutting down before the backup power supply craps out. See you all around the bend.

GOP Freshman Allen West Slams Republicans For Exploiting Troops in Shutdown Fight

“The House Majority has now placed the funding for the Department of Defense and the funding for the troops down as a bargaining chip,” West said. “In the last 100 days, the House Majority could have passed at any point in time a separate stand alone Appropriations for the Department of Defense and the funding for our men and women in uniform.”

I’m disgusted by this thing I’m voting for.

Ours can last on battery for 12 hours (that is, if the generators for some reason don’t take over)

re: #332 Charles

GOP Teabagger now on CNN, insisting that Planned Parenthood does use federal funds for abortion.

This is apparently all over the right wing sites and Fox News — they’re actually putting out a BLATANT LIE, because all these people know damned well that PP is forbidden by law from doing this.

Actually, they don’t think they’re lying. They’re using the “money is fungible” reasoning. Clumsily stated, it means that if two of us give you money, then even though one of us put strings on how their money can be used it doesn’t matter. Because you can use the ‘strings’ money to pay one thing it frees the other money to buy things prohibited by the first.

That this is stupid is obvious. It implies I put strings on the money I give you it ‘taints’ ALL the money I give you with the same restrictions.

But that is how they think it isn’t lying. They give money to PP, PP does provide abortions, therefore PP is using their money to provide abortions.

Gotcha… that in itself is stupid. I’ve come across some legacy software and applications in my days, but anyone that is still running any application on 95 or 3.1 may as well be running a Vic-20 (nothing against a Vic-20, I cut my programming teeth on a Vic-20).

That’s absurd.

Commodore Pets, Vector Graphics, and then one day we added KayPros. Yeah, I was a CP/M baby.

Ever showed up for a meeting that involved three different organizations, thinking your own role was minor…

And by gosh, everyone sure was supportive with their head nods and smiles - “We sure are behind you in this!”.

I was that guy today…. excuse me as I pull the dagger from my back and reschedule my weekend.

*shuffles off, grumbling to himself as he looks for the blankie….*

377 Achilles Tang  Fri, Apr 8, 2011 2:07:10pm

I had a brief conversation with a Republican friend about this today. He does not realize that Planned Parenthood is not about abortion, nor that tax money does not pay for it.

The reason is that the Republican leadership does not mention any of this, or lie directly, and I believe there are many good people, like this person, who are simply under the wrong impression as to what this is about.

I found the conversation uncomfortable, he is my senior by a couple of decades, and changed the subject. Politics is a no win discussion when sitting on a couple of buckets in a barn.

LOL, yeah it’s a pretty sizeable battery array, but there’s a bunch of computers hooked up to it. It’s really just designed to give us enough time to save what we were doing and shut down. It works for that purpose, but yeah, it’s not like you can do a whole lot in that time.

Unfortunately, due to her incompetence, an investigation is absolutely necessary. If there isn’t a thorough accounting of how this happened, people are going to flip out.

How in the hell you mess up at least three different elections and keep your job is beyond me.

Baffles me. I think of all the people I’ve known who’ve lost jobs over so very much less.
