(Their new album Wasting Light is great, by the way. You should get it.)

Foo Fighters are great. That’s why.

I don’t remember live music on the Daily Show.

This a new thing?

Butch Vig, who produced Nevermind, produced this LP (yes it’s available on vinyl as well as CD). In addition, Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic appears on a track called “I Should Have Known,” which Vig thinks has references to Kurt Cobain.

Coincidentally, this is the 20th anniversary year of Nirvana. Hmmmm….

Anyway, check out the article about Vig here.

They should count themselves lucky. Our President Nixon was known to steal whole countries on his trips overseas.
If he were president today, he would already have been to Tehran, where he would have confiscated the nukes, stolen most of the oil, pilfered the palace silverware and left Ahmedinejad pleased and happy to have been of service.

One of the anti-Confederates, a chap from New Jersey, has actually accused Robert E. Lee of running a whorehouse on the side during the War. This blasphemy naturally has put the Lost Causers into a frothing, blue-faced rage. Good thing all those bullets they hoarded can’t be used over the net.

50 Lidane  Tue, Apr 12, 2011 7:12:35pm

From the depths of Freeper-ville and their Civil War comes this nugget of wisdom about New Jersey:

Yes, NJ believes in such rights that one cannot even own weapons there without much paperwork and the threat of confiscation. THAT NJ? Can you carry a pistol in your car without registration? Can you have 100 rifles that aren’t registered in your house and carry them to a shoot? How safe are you in downtown Newark unarmed?

Who the hell needs to have 100 unregistered rifles in their house and why would they carry them all anywhere? That makes no sense.

I don’t have a problem with gun ownership. My family are hunters and sportsmen and law enforcement. I just can’t figure out the logic on display here. WTF?

Freedom only applies to people. The right sort of people.

Got it?

(Actually, I had a really funny conversation with some teens when I explained to them that the 1st ammendment only applies to people over 18. Under 18, your parents can most definitely tell you to shut up, as can the school administrators while you are on school grounds. They were aghast.)

Someone is speaking some truth over there.

To: Idabilly

The south used that principle of coercion to accept government that people didn’t want, forcing bad government on black slaves, and denying that Northern states could ban slavery within their boundary. The principle of the US government is rule of law, whether you want it or not. True, most criminals and traitors will protest that they do not want law that condemns them, but there are legal remedies to bad law, such as petition, pardon, appeal, and election. The southern rebellion was made to overthrow law, for the sake of the institution of human slavery

Why this bothers me so much:

I read something really good once about how you cannot always be both fair and polite. Sometimes, to be fair/just, you have to be impolite.

I really hate it when people are polite and use nice-sounding phrases for ugly things, jettisoning justice to achieve it.

Sometimes, you can be polite at the expense of being accurate. (I was explaining this to my five year old son, in smaller words, as he was pointing out to me that a nearby woman was fat.) I’m against being polite at the expense of being fair.

83 Dark_Falcon  Tue, Apr 12, 2011 7:52:09pm

re: #73 b_sharp

Freedom for them from what? Were they being enslaved by the North?

In their minds, yes. The North was trying to outlaw the system that kept the ruling class of the South in its position of privilege. For the South to concede to limits on slavery within US territory meant (in the Southern mind) that slave state would inevitably be outnumbered by free states, after which slavery would be slowly ground under. That was, indeed, the approach advocated by Abraham Lincoln and it was why the slaveholders hated him. So they decided to secede and maintain their ill-gotten gains.

In that same spirit, Neo-Confederates call all Illinois Republicans RINOs, to which I answer that those Republicans who live in the Land of Lincoln cherish his memory and honor his desire for freedom. I say that that makes us the true heirs to Lincoln, and I say that it is the neo-Confederates who really are RINOs.

re: #85 Stanley Sea

Remember that big prick senator? Can’t remember his famous name. But he raped the 16 yr old maid when he was 19 and on dying day admitted it? And the daughter. Same as before. Absolute low lifes. In power. Gah

Strom Thurmond, that was his name.

I thought it was a dicktastic move too. It just seems like a very dumb insult.

Israeli is to Moroccan, as American is to Kenyan.

Strom Thurmond.

He “admitted” it long before his dying day; he paid her years of support, and put the child through college, she and the daughter came to visit him a few times, he corresponded with her (while of course continuing to support segregation). Everybody in his family knew about it; there’s a theory that maybe he really did love the maid (for some versions of the word “love”) but of course any sort of open relationship was completely out of the question. He didn’t marry until he was well into his 40’s.

The daughter came forward after his death (she was a retired schoolteacher in her 80’s, grandmother of four), and Thurmond’s family issued a very terse statement to the effect of “yes it’s true, we prefer not to discuss it.”
