TN GOP Rep. Nicely: Einstein Would Be in Favor of Teaching Creationism

The Republican Party’s total war on science
Wingnuts • Views: 34,135

Tennessee is a very active front (but not the only one by a long shot) in the Republican Party’s all-out war against science. As we noted last week, Republicans in the Tennessee House of Representatives passed an absurd anti-evolution bill deceptively labeled as “academic freedom” — the latest tactic of the creationist right.

And as we’ve seen many times, creationists very often tell outrageous lies to prop up their Dark Ages magical thinking. Here’s GOP state representative Frank Nicely during the debate on this anti-science legislation, telling the House that Albert Einstein, as a “critical thinker,” would have been in favor of teaching creationism.

Youtube Video

Why isn’t the audience laughing?

Brad Johnson notes that Einstein never said this (which is what you should always assume when creationists quote scientists, because they routinely lie). In fact, Rep. Nicely butchered a quote by Francis Bacon.

Nicely falsely attributed his quotation to Einstein, a Jewish humanist and professed agnostic, who never argued that scientific knowledge leads one to Jesus Christ. The statement is actually a mangled paraphrase of the 16th century philosopher Francis Bacon, who argued that “a little philosophy inclineth man’s mind to atheism; but depth in philosophy bringeth men’s minds about to religion.”

The 16th century lives on in the minds of people like Frank Nicely.

It's laughable enough that the wingnuts have altered history and claim that Thomas Jefferson and Ben Franklin were a Christian theocrats, but Einstein?

Albert Einstein said that a little knowledge would turn your head toward atheism, while a broader knowledge would turn your head toward Christianity.

Well, George Washington once said "Medicare and Medicaid are the path to communism and destruction. Lower taxes are the key to prosperity.", so I don't know why we're having a debate over those, either.

"I do not believe in a personal God and I have never denied this but have expressed it clearly. If something is in me which can be called religious then it is the unbounded admiration for the structure of the world so far as our science can reveal it."

The truth of our faith becomes a matter of ridicule among the infidels if any Catholic, not gifted with the necessary scientific learning, presents as dogma what scientific scrutiny shows to be false.

And false attribution aside, Einstein was a theoretical physicist, not a biologist or the like. Even if he had endorsed creationism, it wouldn't mean that much.

Qaddafi Using Internationally Banned Cluster Bombs on Civilians

Loyalists to Muammar Qaddafi are now attacking Misurata, a besieged city in northwest Libya, with cluster bombs and ground-to-ground rockets. Cluster bombs, which hit large areas with highly-explosive munitions in dense succession, have been banned by most of the world because they cannot be fired precisely and put civilians in populated areas at risk. The bombs were visible late Thursday night in what appeared to be 120-millimeter mortar round bursting over the city and spewing "high-explosive bomblets below," reports the New York Times.

He'd probably be a socialist.

"I am convinced there is only one way to eliminate these grave evils [capitalism], namely through the establishment of a socialist economy, accompanied by an educational system which would be oriented toward social goals. In such an economy, the means of production are owned by society itself and are utilized in a planned fashion. A planned economy, which adjusts production to the needs of the community, would distribute the work to be done among all those able to work and would guarantee a livelihood to every man, woman, and child. The education of the individual, in addition to promoting his own innate abilities, would attempt to develop in him a sense of responsibility for his fellow men in place of the glorification of power and success in our present society."

There's no way he'd run as a modern Republican. Too anti-science, anti-thought. And, as jaunte's post suggests, he was rather supportive of socialist ideas. As such, I'm not sure he'd like the current Democrats much, either, but they'd be a much closer fit, relatively (relativity?) speaking.

Well, the interpretation of law is probably always going to be somewhat subjective (Which is probably a good thing, since not all situations are equal), but many people fail to grasp that there are still limits and that the idea is that even as you have your approach to the law guide you as a judge, you still have a structure to stay within. In general, I'd rather have a ruling causing a result I don't like, but which is clearly grounded in the law, than have a ruling with a result I'd favor, but which ignores the clear rule of law in the matter. I realize that a lot of people (Too many) don't really have these same feelings and understandings, much to my dismay.

It's name dropping and almost everyone does it to some degree when trying to win an argument. You'd hope people would be more careful about trying to be at least somewhat accurate, especially with it being so easy to check on the sourcing these days, but apparently that's asking too much.

Granted, using a misattributed quote supposedly from an agnostic, socialist Jewish scientist to try and prop up your pseudo-Christian theological anti-science bill probably indicates a lack of any research whatsoever on the part of the speaker.

50 Mad Prophet Ludwig  Fri, Apr 15, 2011 1:25:16pm

So what would Einstien himself say to this?

Let's allow the man to speak for himself:

The further the spiritual evolution of mankind advances, the more certain it seems to me that the path to genuine religiosity does not lie through the fear of life, and the fear of death, and blind faith, but through striving after rational knowledge.

Einstein would have been deeply angered and saddened by this abuse of his name.

A human being is part of the whole called by us universe, a part limited in time and space. We experience ourselves, our thoughts and feelings as something separate from the rest. A kind of optical delusion of consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from the prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty. The true value of a human being is determined by the measure and the sense in which they have obtained liberation from the self. We shall require a substantially new manner of thinking if humanity is to survive. (Albert Einstein, 1954)

The most beautiful and most profound experience is the sensation of the mystical. It is the sower of all true science. He to whom this emotion is a stranger, who can no longer wonder and stand rapt in awe, is as good as dead. To know that what is impenetrable to us really exists, manifesting itself as the highest wisdom and the most radiant beauty which our dull faculties can comprehend only in their primitive forms - this knowledge, this feeling is at the center of true religiousness.
( Albert Einstein - The Merging of Spirit and Science)

While I know better than to respond...

That's not what I meant at all. What I was saying is that the term "philosophy" is tossed around far too loosely, referring to everything anyone wants to claim, regardless of if it rational, thoughtful, consistent, or based on anything. Any philosophy worth a damn has some actual thought involved and generally should have some level of reality and internal consistency to it, even if it's a flawed line of thinking. Disagreement is allowed, you just generally need something more convincing than "Because I said so".

Time to post this again:

Lorenzago di Cadore, Jul 26, 2007 / 09:52 am (CNA).- The debate between creationism and evolution is an “absurdity” since evolution can coexist with faith, said Pope Benedict XVI this week while vacationing in the mountains of northern Italy.

While there is much scientific proof to support evolution, the theory cannot exclude a role by God, he said according to MSNBC News.

“They are presented as alternatives that exclude each other,” the Pope said. “This clash is an absurdity because on one hand there is much scientific proof in favor of evolution, which appears as a reality that we must see and which enriches our understanding of life and being as such.”

However, evolution does not answer all of the great philosophical questions, he said, including: Where does everything come from?

The Pope’s comments came during a question and answer session with a group of 400 priests, deacons, and seminarians from the region where he is vacationing. In his responses he also spoke about the need to care for the Earth. He urged people to listen to “the voice of the Earth” or risk destroying its very existence.

The theory of evolution is not designed to "answer all of the great philosophical questions, he said, including: Where does everything come from?" so that is a moot point.

There is other science that answers that. Maybe he should read up a bit on that.

As a lapsed Catholic, I have several very serious disagreements with the position of the Church on many issues. When it comes to *most* issues of science, however, I need to give credit where credit is due and say that their positions tend to be fairly reasonable and accepting of the observations we can make of the physical world, rather than just rejecting them because they don't match with how they had decided to interpret the Bible at some point in the past.

I sort of agree... I went through 12 years of catholic school, and I don't remember anyone shoving the religious instruction down my throat in place of the science... both were taught, and they never stepped on each other.

But that statement by the pope still has that weasel factor in it... and suggesting that evolution and the origin of the universe is one in the same, well, that's a bit dishonest, or at least he's lacking some knowledge there.

But that statement by the pope still has that weasel factor in it... and suggesting that evolution and the origin of the universe is one in the same, well, that's a bit dishonest, or at least he's lacking some knowledge there.

He didn't do that. In fact, his point was that evolution is perfectly true while not addressing the concept of the origin of the universe.

Otherwise, how could he be saying evolution was true?

Think about it, Walter.

Fucking magnets, how do they work?
And I don’t wanna talk to a scientist
Y’all motherfuckers lying, and getting me pissed.

- Insane Clown Posse, Miracles (2009)

“Fucking Magnets, How Do They Work? is a lyrical reference to the 2009 single Miracles by the Insane Clown Posse, an American hip hop duo from Detroit, Michigan. The song describes the wonders of the universe and an appreciation for nature’s beauty, while angrily eschewing science. Among the most quotable lines can be heard at 1:52, “fucking magnets, how do they work,” which instantly became a popular catchphrase on the web.

Well, I think at least the latter is true, for sure, since he is most certainly not a scientist. How much is that and how much is him feeling a need to inject the Church into it? Well, I wish I knew. I know that what I've heard from actual Vatican scientists has tended to be encouraging, at least.

He didn't do that. In fact, his point was that evolution is perfectly true while not addressing the concept of the origin of the universe.

Otherwise, how could he be saying evolution was true?

Think about it, Walter.

Well, he may have be talking about the origin of the universe or he may have been talking about the genesis of life, but both of those are, indeed, outside the scope of evolution theory.

77 Obdicut  Fri, Apr 15, 2011 1:57:49pm

See, this is what the pope said:

“They are presented as alternatives that exclude each other,” the Pope said. “This clash is an absurdity because on one hand there is much scientific proof in favor of evolution, which appears as a reality that we must see and which enriches our understanding of life and being as such.”

However, evolution does not answer all of the great philosophical questions, he said, including: Where does everything come from?

This is absolutely true. Creationists present evolution and belief in god as alternatives that exclude each other. They don't. It is absurd because there is proof of evolution, and that absolutely has to be accepted, even by religious people.

And evolution does not answer the great philosophical questions.

High-energy physics does attempt to answer the questions of the origin of the universe. If he's wrong about anything, it's positing that as a philosophical question.

The Tea Party rally is being organized by AFP-Wisconsin, as you probably know.

Americans for Prosperity (AFP) is a group fronting special interests started by oil billionaire David Koch and Richard Fink (a member of the board of directors of Koch Industries). AFP has been accused of funding astroturf operations but also has been fueling the "Tea Party" efforts. [1] AFP's messages are in sync with those of other groups funded by the Koch Family Foundations and the Koch's other special interest groups that work against progressive or Democratic initiatives and protections for workers and the environment.

from the link:

He described the 13 years of sexual abuse to which he had subjected one nephew from the age of five as no more than "a little piece of intimacy".

"How did it begin?" he said.

"As with all families. When they came to visit, the nephews slept with me. It began as a game with the boys. It was never a question of rape."

"I don't have the impression at all that I am a paedophile," he said. "It was really just a small relationship. I did not have the feeling that my nephew was against it, quite the contrary. It was not brutal sex."

According to the former Roman Catholic bishop, the boy he abused over 13 years eventually told his family and he stopped.

Yes she did, and then you then chose to conflate instigating and disruption with violence, damage, and Islamist murder. In other words you played to your strength, the ability to appear deliberately ignorant when it suits you. You're still doing it. Just give it up, it's pathetic and you the only person you appear to be fooling is yourself.

re: #199 Killgore Trout

oops, maybe not....

Kaus has identified himself as neoliberal.[citation needed] He tends to support liberal ends, including social equality (the topic of The End of Equality and universal access to health care), but frequently attacks traditional liberal means of reaching those ends. Most notably, he was an influential proponent of welfare reform in the 1980s, and is a fierce critic of both labor unions (particularly automotive workers' unions and teachers' unions) and immigration reform (he supports the new Arizona anti-illegal-immigration law, calling to wait to see the law's practical effects before overturning it).[21] [22]

Kaus' constant criticisms of traditional liberalism have prompted some liberals[23] (including his Bloggingheads sparring partner Robert Wright) to see him as a right-winger. He has been criticized for his persistent defense of his friend Ann Coulter from many liberal critics

The overall record of American fisheries management since the mid-1990s is one of improvement, not of decline. Perhaps the most spectacular recovery is that of bottom fish in New England, especially haddock and redfish; their abundance has grown sixfold from 1994 to 2007. Few if any fish species in the United States are now being harvested at too high a rate, and only 24 percent remain below their desired abundance.

Much of the success is a result of the Magnuson Fishery Conservation and Management Act, which was signed into law 35 years ago this week. It banned foreign fishing within 200 miles of the United States shoreline and established a system of management councils to regulate federal fisheries. In the past 15 years, those councils, along with federal and state agencies, nonprofit organizations and commercial and sport fishing groups, have helped assure the sustainability of the nation’s fishing stocks.

Came across three. One was a suicide (19 years old) and another was a 17 year old that was laying on the tracks and didn't get up according to the engineer so that's probably another suicide. 3 days later on that same line it hit a 15 year old who was pinned and later medevaced out. Rand’s Rant Against Green Bulbs

The Senate Energy and Natural Resources (ENR) Committee got a dose of libertarian wackiness at a recent mark-up hearing that was strikingly reminiscent of the bizarre tirades that Glenn Beck doled out daily on his now defunct television show....

According to an account in Energy & Environment Daily, Paul launched into a sermon about Ayn Rand’s 1937 novel Anthem, which depicts a dark future where the concept of individuality has fallen prey to the evils of collectivism and socialism.

Paul described a scene from the novel in which the protagonist, called Equality 7-2521, discovers the incandescent light bulb. Paul recounts that Equality 7-2521 naively thinks that electricity and the brilliance of electric light would be an advantage for society. But when he takes the light bulb to the society’s elders, they crush it “beneath the boot heel of the collective.”

Paul then instructed his fellow senators that in the novel, “the collective has no place, basically, for individual choice,” and adds, “Now, I’m not suggesting that this collective is against electricity, per say, or individualism … but I am suggesting that we’re against choice.”

How long will it be before Paul is bringing blackboards into the Senate ENR hearing room and is drawing diagrams purporting to show that Senators Murkowski and Bingaman are agents of a Middle Eastern caliphate plotting to stop America from using its coal?

[Link: www.salon.com...]

this is what rand paul thinks of a women's choice.

In a mind-boggling display of foot stamping during an energy hearing, Paul asked deputy assistant energy secretary for efficiency Kathleen Hogan if she was "pro-choice," leading the visibly puzzled Hogan to reply she's pro-choice on light bulbs. Rand then launched into full cri de coeur mode, comparing the choice of abortion to being "anti-choice on every other consumer item, including light bulbs, refrigerators, toilets. You can't go around your house without being told what to buy. You restrict my purchases. You don't care about my choices."

women wanting to chose what to do with their bodies is somehow comparable to rand paul's toilet options.

First he made the outlandish claim.
Then when called on it, said his comments weren't meant to be factual.
Afterward, said he "misspoke", and he shifted blame to a nameless press aide.
Finally, today, quietly removed the statement from the official record.

Notice something missing here out of all this?

Heh...Hoyer and Co. force Republicans to vote down their own budget

The RSC is a very large bloc of conservative Republican House members. They introduced a 10-year plan for America that makes the already far-reaching House budget look fairly moderate. It was supposed to be a symbolic vote -- one that allowed conservative members to go on the record in support of slashing $9 trillion in spending knowing full well it would never be adopted as the official position of the House and the Republican Party. Hoyer figured them out.

...snip...

Only 15 Democrats declined to switch their votes from "no" to "present." The plan failed by 16 votes.

Republicans came close to fucking themselves over on that one. Heh.

I wish I could believe that. But Fox/Talk radio push the Obama hatred agenda, and if a candidate will not go after Obama on a deeply personal level, I dont know if he can make it in todays republican party.

That experiment has already been run. You get booed by your own supporters.

Part of his rant was when he said it's a "sad thing" that such a large demographic (the Black vote) voted for Obama based on race. In essence, calling Black people racist. 98% of registered Blacks voted for Obama and nationally, Blacks contributed 13% of the entire vote. That is up from 11% in years prior. That's 2% who never voted before. That is no where near the majority.

Besides if it was all about being Black, why hasn't Jesse Jackson gotten any traction all these years?. He's ran for Pres before.

But the Black vote is powerful and 13% is nothing to sneeze at, or 11%. Without it, Obama wouldn't have won. The final numbers were Obama 53% and McCain 46%

All other things being equal, I don't know. I mean, you can get on perfectly fine without Ayn Rand later in life. Many people get on fine without religion as well, but I tend to see it as a potentially better experience than Rand.

I don't feel it's wrong anyway to vote for a person because he's Black. I mean, in the sense that people do that all the time. Handsome and/or pretty very often influence choice. Crist was the type of Republican we could all wish for, but the Tea Party won that nomination and could have been shown the door, probably, if not for a self serving "nice" guy like Meek standing for his own principles, not to mention those who voted for him, likely not even knowing that he would never win.

Really? All about being nice? He was a Senator and a Congressman going back to 1995. That's a longer track record than just "being nice."

I'm not getting into this argument. I've had my fill for the day.

I think he was a congressman, not a senator, and nobody had heard of him until the Democrats decided he was the strongest candidate they had.

That may be a real conundrum. No Democrat running. So the principle is that party comes first and someone has to run even though it means the asshole Tea Part candidate becomes guaranteed to win.

I suppose that in a nutshell is American politics. Screw the consequences and long live the principles.

Kendrick's politics were no different than Bill Nelson, Wasserman-Schultz, Obama, Clinton or any other liberal. If that upsets you, than that's a different story. "He is a fine public servant" to me means, he is a fine liberal much like many of the other Democrats I respect.

re: #468 Aceofwhat?

i am far more sensitive to the ethnicity which was enslaved and treated so very poorly for so very long. people are free to vote however they want, but i would have some disdain for, say, Hispanics or Asians voting along purely racial lines. on the other hand, i understand when/if the black community feels that they need to vote in such a fashion.

i live in a fairly diverse area. i can tell you that the republican stance on immigration, the dream act, and the increase in birtherism has turned off a lot of immigrants of all colors. they feel very american and their children are american. they feel rejected by the repubican party. if the president's americanism is questioned based on his parentage and his brown skin, what does that say for them and theirs. their votes are not on racial lines. it is based on self interest.

Well you're sitting here talking like you freakin know something that you don't. He was a state senator, not a U.S. senator.

i don't disagree with that at all. i am only saying that if immigrants of a certain color tend only to vote for immigrants of the same ethnicity, i have a problem with that.

that is as opposed to the earlier question of blacks voting for blacks, which i find perfectly acceptable given our very recent history of very poor treatment of anyone appearing to be of African descent.

One party, unfortunately has been for certain races through the times, it hasn't changed in one iota in my mind.

i don't see it as so black and white *rimshot*

for example, not providing vouchers to poor, often minority-heavy districts just seems inane to me.

You get upset easily it seems. Nobody knows a state senator unless, maybe, it's their own. State senator does not trump state governor and he has no strength other than being, perhaps, a nice guy with no chance in hell of beating the white guy.

His candidacy was a spoiler, pure and simple. One could argue that so was Crist, since he should have switched to Democrat, instead of Independent, but that wasn't on the cards either, so Tea Party it is.
