OC Republican Circulates Racist Email: Obama and His Parents Are Apes

What Tea Party racism?
Wingnuts • Views: 38,051

Once again, a prominent Republican and Tea Party activist has been caught circulating a vicious racist email about the first African American President, this time in Orange County, California: Racist Orange County Republican Email: President Obama and His Parents Are Apes.

This latest sickening example makes the connection between Birtherism and old-school racism utterly explicit.

The Weekly has obtained a copy of an email sent to fellow conservatives this week by Marilyn Davenport, a Southern California Tea Party activist and member of the central committee of the Orange County Republican Party.

Under the words, “Now you know why no birth certificate,” there’s an Obama family portrait showing them as apes. …

Reached by telephone and asked if she thought the email was appropriate, Davenport said, “Oh, come on! Everybody who knows me knows that I am not a racist. It was a joke. I have friends who are black. Besides, I only sent it to a few people—mostly people I didn’t think would be upset by it.”

"Everyone who knows me knows I'm not a racist"

When you find this type of shit funny -- and you sent it to others in your group who you also think it would be funny.. Guess fucking what:

YOU'RE A RACIST.

This is just extremely offensive, how can someone be so dumb that they don't get that. And I'd fucking love to see Marilyn run this by her "black friends" to see what they think of it.

QFT. If you're not a racist, then you don't forward this shit. You circular file it, report it, or you send back an angry response. When you forward it, guess what, you confirm to others that you're a fellow racist!

I can't believe anyone would think it was funny, or cute, not worth being upset about, or appropriate to send to anybody.
Ugh.

Allow me to clear up a few things. First of all, this is totally not racist, because Obama's mom was white, and she is also shown as an ape.

Also, George Bush was routinely portrayed as a chimpanzee, so this is exactly the same thing, except not as bad, because the libs did it first.

//I speak wingnut. This has been a preemptive deflection.

Very much agreed. The Bush/Chimp thing was tasteless and not at all funny. The Obama/ape thing is tasteless, not at all funny, and also taps into deep reservoirs of racist imagery. As did some of the images of Condi, which was seriously disgusting.

I was not making comments on weather I liked it or not I was just trying to properly establish a baseline for what is and isn't racist since after as cliche as it is to say it if we overuse the term it loses its impact.

So yeah, Bush to Monkey comparison =not racist.

SFZ's post was done is a sarcastic manner to show how a false equivalency exists on this issue (at least that was how I read it).

In yours I saw what seemed to be a lumping together of Bush and Condi as if portray of one as a monkey was just as offensive of portraying the other that was.

While all three are deplorable acts, I felt it was important not to loose sight of the fact that the issue isn't just about the dehumanizing aspect of such pictures but also the conotations of why it's especially wrong to portray a person of African American decent as a monkey.

No offense was intended.

As far as I know, this is a she we're talking about, not a he.

Well she has a history.

Michael J. Schroeder, an Orange County resident and former chairman of the California Republican Party, also said he was disgusted.
...
“This is a three strikes situation for Marilyn Davenport,” Schroeder said. “She was a passionate defender of former Newport Beach city councilman Dick Nichols who stated that he was voting against putting in more grass at Corona del Mar’s beach because, he said, there were already ‘too many Mexicans on the beach.’ She was also on the wrong side of the fence with the Los Alamitos mayor and his White House watermelon patch picture. Now, she has managed to top both of those incidents by comparing African Americans to monkeys. She has disgraced herself and needs to resign. If she doesn’t, the Republican Party must remove her.”

Depicting anyone as a chimp is dehumanizing, which is why comparing black people to monkeys became so popular and now is especially offensive. It was also used against the Irish who were often talked about as if they weren't much better than black people, but lucky them, they did eventually get to be white.

Thus the picture up above racist.

//She also had friends go to a Halloween party in black-face.

103 Summer Seale  Sat, Apr 16, 2011 2:34:53pm

I sometimes have a real problem with accusing people of racism for the very reason that there is no accepted method of claiming the reverse. I think more than half the time that people use the line "I have black friends" is because it's all they can say to try to defend themselves on such short notice.

That being said, the guy who published this clearly is a racist, knew it was racist (or should have), and really doesn't have anything to defend that sort of behavior. I also just had an insight as to the possible cause that so many fundamentalists and evangelicals are so opposed to the Theory of Evolution: because they literally think of blacks as inferior and "ape-like" in some weird throwback racist way, and they would rather be dead than be like that (as well as all the reasons they list in a biblical sense).

At least, that's just a hypothesis I came up with right now, and I think it might be interesting to see it tested out somehow.

re: #12 SanFranciscoZionist

Allow me to clear up a few things. First of all, this is totally not racist, because Obama's mom was white, and she is also shown as an ape.

Also, George Bush was routinely portrayed as a chimpanzee, so this is exactly the same thing, except not as bad, because the libs did it first.

Another of my 'if I were evil' career plans. If I were evil, I would start an agency that provides you with black friends as a cover for your nefarious political dumbness, or just to make you feel good about yourself. It would be like an escort service, except instead of sleeping with you, the black friends would go to your Fourth of July barbecue, or bring their kids to your kid's birthday, or talk to press about what a great dude you are. That way, instead of just saying "I have black friends", these folks could immediately PRODUCE the black friends. There would be different profiles--hipsters, professionals, suburban neighbors--like that--and your black friends would never, ever tell you that something you said was insensitive, or hurt your feelings.

I think I could make a fortune. If I were evil.

Racist Orange County Republican Email: President Obama and His Parents Are Apes

(Update: KCAL and KCBS reported during their respective 10 and 11 p.m. broadcasts that in a telephone interview Davenport blamed the media for this controversy and slammed down the phone.)

As a member of the local Republican central committee, Davenport represents an inland section of Orange County: Fullerton, Brea, La Habre, Placentia and, home of the Richard M. Nixon Presidential Birthplace & Library, Yorba Linda.

Oh yeah, all the attenion on the story and the picture, why don't you idjits focus on the foul mouthed reporters.

On a lighter note, would it be terribly wrong & dehumanizing to say John Boehner totally Looks like an orange M&M?

well, the thing is - he does actually look like an orange M&M. No photoshop needed.

Bush to Monkey comparison =not racist.
Condi/Obama to Monkey comparison = racist.

Why?

re: #168 unrememberable

Because, historically, black people have been and continue to be compared to apes by racists.

Can't you believe you were actually ignorant of that.

I was unaware that historically they were. Can I ask for some references?

However, I don't feel that your post really answers my question: if insulting blacks in the past by comparing them to apes was considered racism, then why is insulting GWB by comparing him to an ape not considered racism?

If requesting clarifications of claims whose basis I do not understand is trollish, then color me guilty as charged.

The Ape in American Bigotry, From Thomas Jefferson to 2009

"The effort to dehumanize black people by characterizing them as apes is central to our national history. Thomas Jefferson made the connection in his notorious book “Notes on the State of Virginia,” in which he asserted fantastically that male orangutans were sexually drawn to Negro women.

By defining Negroes not as human beings but as beasts, the nation rationalized subjugation and cruelty — and justified laws that stripped them of basic human rights. The case for segregation itself rested heavily on the assertion that animal origins made Negroes feebleminded, smelly and intolerably offensive to white sensibilities."

I'd color you stupid for apparently not knowing that GWB is white, not black.

Thinking out loud here: we Jews are routinely depicted in the Muslim press as pigs and monkeys. Is that racist? I suppose. But if someone would depict GWB as a pig, would I, as a Jew, be able to say: that's not racist, that's different.

If portraying a member of group A as an animal is racist, then how would portraying member of group B as animal not racist?

In all of the above cases, whether the target is GWB, blacks or Jews, the point of the cartoon is to de-humanize and ridicule the target. I don't see how any case is any more or less racist than any other case.

History matters. The depiction of Blacks as apes and Jews as pigs is a long-standing attempt to justify deplorable behavior towards them. These same people were guilty of actual injury, not just insult. Real blood was spilled, not just ink.

(Also, just for your own defense, the Librarian is an APE, not a MONKEY, unless you want to find those long fingers wrapped around your neck. And remember to return your books. Apologies to all those of you who don't read this series.)

I stopped bothering with the "education" and just go into full on bitch mode. At least I'll get some entertainment out of it.

re: #168 unrememberable

Why?

Because comparing Black People to monkey's/apes is a well known meme among white supremacists but there's no similar meme among black ones comparing whites to monkeys.

Also there's always the ancient rule of "I'm X and I'm doing it to other Xs" in this case I'm a white person so it becomes more difficult to argue that I'm trying to make a racist statement by comparing another white person to a monkey.

When a white person compares a black person to one however...
