Time Lapse Video: The Mountain (and the Milky Way)

Our galaxy viewed through a Sahara sandstorm
Arts • Views: 35,903

This incredible high definition time-lapse film by Terje Sorgjerd was shot on Spain’s highest mountain, El Teide, and has some of the most stunning views of the Milky Way galaxy I’ve seen.

Youtube Video

This was filmed between 4th and 11th April 2011. I had the pleasure of visiting El Teide. Spain’s highest mountain @(3715m) is one of the best places in the world to photograph the stars and is also the location of Teide Observatories, considered to be one of the world’s best observatories.

The goal was to capture the beautiful Milky Way galaxy along with one of the most amazing mountains I know El Teide. I have to say this was one of the most exhausting trips I have done. There was a lot of hiking at high altitudes and probably less than 10 hours of sleep in total for the whole week. Having been here 10-11 times before I had a long list of must-see locations I wanted to capture for this movie, but I am still not 100% used to carrying around so much gear required for time-lapse movies.

A large sandstorm hit the Sahara Desert on the 9th April and at approx 3am in the night the sandstorm hit me, making it nearly impossible to see the sky with my own eyes.

Interestingly enough my camera was set for a 5 hour sequence of the milky way during this time and I was sure my whole scene was ruined. To my surprise, my camera had managed to capture the sandstorm which was backlit by Grand Canary Island making it look like golden clouds. The Milky Way was shining through the clouds, making the stars sparkle in an interesting way. So if you ever wondered how the Milky Way would look through a Sahara sandstorm, look at 00:32.

Note that my comment at #1 does not call for indiscriminate attacks on Palestinians, it calls for the (eventual) destruction of Hamas and no more.

I honestly have better things to think about than Hamas

More concerned about oh you know, human life on earth being upended by AGW, and food shortages causing worldwide chaos

as long as there is strife in that region, there will always be those people. They'll be called Hamas, or something else. get rid of them, and a more powerful version will take its place.

Makes me homesick since you can't get a true clear sky here due to sky pollution. The piano is a nice touch too. Glad I am going home for Easter weekend.

Just watching a Rick Steve's Spain episode yesterday, a documentary on Galilea/Cassini right before I saw this. Mindblowing, and makes me want some paella and sherry.

Rick Steves' Europe is a good travel series. The Spanish episodes are very good. I like the one where he is in southern Spain at the Sherry Festival.

I love watching the clouds in time-lapse. I especially liked the fog moving in and out of the trees.

Also interesting.... They have a thread about the NY Tea party....

MC’d by David Webb. Speakers included, Andrew Sullivan, Charles Payne, Andrew Wilkow, Mike Church, Janks Morton, William “Bill” Shea, Jr., Martin Gillespie, and AnnaMarie McEvoy. And, special musical guest, John King!

It was a nippy Friday in April, but there was a pretty nice turnout.

LOL@ Tea Party!

Sullivan makes no mention of the Tea Party appearance on his blog. Might not be him but he does appear of Fox News a lot lately. Napolitano loves him and Fox Nation has been linking to articles about him lately.

The Universe is elegant and beautiful.

re: #1 Dark_Falcon

Hamas has been doing things like that for years on end. They've refused to release Gilad Shalit since they captured him almost 5 years ago. They, and other terror groups in Gaza, murder pro-Palestinian activists because they aren't sufficiently Islamic enough. They attack at every opportunity - whether by kassam, mortar, or any means at their disposal.

But they're hardly alone.

The investigation into the murder of the Fogel family, including 3 kids (one an infant) has led to 2 Palestinian teens arrested - and they're connected to the PFLP, a PLO affiliate and offshoot from Fatah. While their families deny any involvement and claim that Israel tortured/coerced the teens into confessing, the families aren't exactly paragons of virtue as they have been involved in the PFLP and acts of terrorism, including against Itamar, where the Fogels lived years ago.

re: #36 Fat Bastard Vegetarian

I think since Hamas released the videos almost a year ago, everyone is working on the assumption that he's still alive b/c Hamas sees him as an ongoing bargaining chip to secure the release of hundreds of terrorists from jail.

I can't even begin to image the nightmare he is living. Any clue on where he's being held? I would guess he's probably in Iran or Syria. I doubt they can have a secure enough location for him in Gaza.

You won't get this, but she wanted to go to Powell's after Voodoo, so I had to do the long walk up Burnside in a light rain and wind while carrying a bright pink box, flat, which is an arm-buster.

agh, voodoo to Powells, that's a hell of a walk! I always walked up and down Burnside a lot because my old health care offices for my job were right there, always hung out at Powells, Puya Puya, Henrys, Marathon Tavern., and of course the mighty MCMENAMINS RINGLERS where I would put back two pints of ale at lunch and then go sit in a room where idiots repeat nonsense at me and call it a "training"

Mexican microbrewers struggle to get ahead

Reporting from Mexico City—
It sounds like a movie where high jinks ensue: A teetotaling Mexican hotel worker travels to England, befriends a whisky-drinking Irishman and scrubs toilets in a pub while learning to brew killer beer.

Such is the odd path Jose Morales has taken since a sweltering day five years ago when he found himself wondering how to make a beverage he doesn't even drink. The daydreaming has led Morales, then a hotel warehouse manager, to an unlikely new calling as a beer maker.

Morales, 36, is among a burst of Mexican brewers who are testing recipes and investing in imported equipment in hopes of finding the same formula for success that microbreweries north of the border have found.

Mostly self-taught, the Mexican brewers have launched an array of offerings, from Belgian-style wheat beers and imperial stouts to an ale aged in tequila barrels. They want to translate a hobby into commercial success in a country that is increasingly quick to embrace foreign trends, from smartphones to designer coffee.

Oh man, that was a huge tingle up my leg.
