Wingnut Blog Fail of the Day: Aaron Worthing

‘Something called UTC, probably Asian’
Wingnuts • Views: 32,634

I woke up today feeling masochistic, I guess, because I spent about 15 minutes having a look around the wingnut blogosphere to see what was shaking in the Land of Epistemic Closure.

The Daily Caller has an article accusing Glenn Beck of using the work of numerous right wing loons (such as Andrew Breitbart) without attribution. The loons apparently want to make sure they get credit for inspiring the most batshit insane TV personality in history. And I say, go for it! Take your glory back!

This tale of “content theft” spurred Aaron Worthing, one of the bloggers at Patterico (the wingnut site run by Deputy District Attorney John Patrick Frey of the Hardcore Gang Division, LA County, Compton), to complain bitterly that his groundbreaking work proving climate change to be a hoax had also been stolen, by a writer at the website of hack global warming denier Anthony Watts, “Watt’s Up With That:” Patterico’s Pontifications » Watts Up With Taking Content Without Attribution?

Worthing goes on at length about the timestamps on his post compared to the timestamps on the post at Watts Up, concluding with great magnanimity:

…this is much more about the message in my book than the messenger. The message is that the science is broken. The message is that the chicken-littles keep making predictions that turn out wrong, but it doesn’t lead them to revise their theories. And when you call them on it, the original, laughably bad prediction disappears. The message is that they want to restrict my freedom and trash the economy when they can’t even be sure the problem is real.

That much, in itself, already qualifies as a major fail, just because of its ignorant anti-science density. But the really exceptional fail is buried in the midst of Worthing’s seemingly interminable whine. As he investigated the timestamp on this theft of his genius-level work, he encountered something that evoked a masterpiece of derp:

As for Gavin’s post, it’s listed at 1:20 a.m. in something called UTC (which I guess is one of the Asian time zones) and I am unsure how to translate it into my time.

Paraphrase: “Them damn Chinee furriners — now they’re stealin’ our time! What’s next, our womenfolk?”

(Here, Aaron. Let me Google that for you.)

But seriously. This really is the right wing mindset in a nutshell, emphasis on “nut.” He’s never heard of Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), thinks it must be something “Asian,” and is too lazy to spend 10 seconds Googling it, yet he still feels completely qualified to dismiss the conclusions of the entire world’s climate scientists.

Aaron Worthing, you ARE the fail of the day. And you get all the credit for it.

Obviously if a scientific expert in a field can't explain the subject to a dunce who disagrees with him from get go, the science must be flawed.

We've got it covered already.

The Imperial Dating System of the Imperium of Man, also known as the Imperial Calendar, is fairly complex in nature, and has been structured so as to deal with the vast amount of recorded history that exists in the 41st Millenium and the massive distances between settled human worlds, which can lead to long periods of isolation. Also the vagaries and time-warping effects of the Immaterium can make it almost impossible to keep accurate track of time over long journeys. The Imperium has developed its own method of recording dates, which needs a bit of explanation. Most importantly, the years are always "Anno Domini" (AD) using the numbering system of our own present-day Gregorian Calendar, so the dates themselves are the ones that we are familiar with now. A typical date as Imperial scholars write it would look something like 0123456.M41. This date can be divided up so that each part is explained separately:

0 123 456 M41 = Check Number/Year Fraction/Year/Millennium

27 srjh  Mon, Apr 18, 2011 12:24:45pm

Wingnut standard time:

WST = UTC - 500,000

Or about 50 years behind Coordinated Universal Time.

Newt Gingrich: Kids should be required to study the ‘Creator’ in the Declaration of Independence

In another promise to social conservatives, Gingrich said every state Legislature should require that public school students be taught annually about the Declaration of Independence, particularly its 18th-century invocation of rights endowed by the “Creator.”

“I challenge the ACLU to explain why it is inappropriate to teach that our founding political document says that our rights come from our Creator, and that teachers ought to be able to explain what the word ‘Creator’ means as a matter of historic accuracy and understanding America,” Gingrich said.

re: #42 Kragar (Proud to be Kafir)

What is the founding document of the United States of America?

A: The Constitution.

This has been a history lesson brought to you by Newt Gingrich's craven pandering to the religious right.

The 'united' in the Declaration of independence simply meant they were united on this particular issue. Later in the same document it says:

That these United Colonies are, and of Right ought to be Free and Independent States

The Declaration of Independence did not create the United States. It declared that these states were independent, and united in declaring their independence. It firmly says that they are multiple states. And this is the term 'state' as in 'head of state' as in "What will Newt Gingrich never get to be?"

re: #42 Kragar (Proud to be Kafir)

Newt Gingrich: Kids should be required to study the ‘Creator’ in the Declaration of Independence

That's simple enough: The Founding Fathers believed that all rights came from a higher authority, a Creator, rather than from Earthly monarchs. And that, since we were all born with these inalienable rights, we could not be denied them, as colonists had for so long. It was basically one in a number of middle fingers pointed at King George, who believed that he had the authority to grant or deny rights due to divine right.

Just messing around with some numbers I looked up:

1. 2011-2012 US Budget = $3,500,000,000,000
2. Number of US Income Tax Filers for 2011 = 145,000,000
3. Gross National Income 2011 (estimated) = $9,780,000,000,000
4. Percent of budget paid by individual Income tax = 45%
5. Total Payroll taxes (SS and medicare) = 36%
6. Employee portion of payroll taxes = 40%
7. Employee portion of overall payroll tax (36% x 40%) = 14.5%
8. Individual paid portion of budget (14.5% + 45%) = 59.5%
9. Individual paid portion of budget in $ = $2,082,500,000,000

Therefore the average tax burden for each filer = $14,362

Newt Gingrich: Kids should be required to study the ‘Creator’ in the Declaration of Independence

OK, I could do a lesson on that. It would involve the various religious beliefs held by the different founders, the complexities in particular of Jefferson's relationship with Christianity, and the previous sources that do not refer to a Creator--George Mason's preamble to the Virginia constitution, a clear influence on Jefferson's production, read, "That all men are born equally free and independent, and have certain inherent natural Rights, of which they can not by any compact, deprive or divest their posterity".

re: #78 marjoriemoon

Ahh seems like a common ailment of the wingnuts.

It seems to me that this phenomenon is remarkably useful for extremists of all stripes. I mean, look at (1) AGW deniers, (2) creationists, and (3) birthers: In all three cases, there is a tendency to find some unexplained detail and try to make the entire idea hinge upon that detail.

1. Climategate basically boils down to commented-out code, and personal emails. It doesn't impact the conclusions at all, but that doesn't seem to matter.
2. Creationists love to focus in on some organ, like the eye, and claim it is irreducibly complex, regardless of how many times the mechanism behind the development of that organ is explained.
3. Birthers love to focus on the "long form", never mind that it not only doesn't exist, but is irrelevant given that his mother is an American, and thus, the location of his birth is also.

I think in their minds they are hacking away at the very foundation of the idea with which they disagree. To anyone who isn't crazy, they are just getting hung up on stupid details they don't understand. It's weird to watch.

I'm sure they're also tracking every Lizard who pays them a visit.

One trip to diary of dumbass was enough for me. OCD coupled with paranoid delusions isn't nearly as entertaining as one might think.

This comment on Fark sums it all up for me:

"Obama is so weak, he can't even get 50% support against a REPUBLICAN. And those guys are f*cking retarded!"

Does HotAir not get that they are basically making fun of the GOP?

They also seem to not notice than even at 49%, he still has a 15% lead over his closest competition.

Probably not. I think Allahpundit is kind of mocking his readers but Ed Morrisey shamelessly spins dishonest bullshit all day long.

Maybe the GOP's complete departure from reason will save us all, like some kind of electoral self-correcting mechanism. If they are too dumb to realize that the tactic they are currently employing is suicidal, then how could they ever change course?

Fark Thread: Rasmussen survey: Obama 49%, Trump 34%. Hot Air: OBAMA CAN'T CLEAR 50% EVEN AGAINST TRUMP
Tagged "dumbass"

Obama could walk on the water of the White House swimming pool, and Hot Air would run the headline "Obama Can't Swim!"

re: #89 Fozzie Bear

I never thought the GOP's capacity for self-delusion would extend to misinterpreting polls to such an extent. There have to be some smart people in the GOP who see the writing on the wall, that this is all backfiring. Why aren't they being heard from? Is it just the echo-chamber effect, drowning out attempts to self-correct?

This is all so weird. It gives the appearance of people who don't want to win, but want to look like they are trying. It's like a political version of "The Producers" or something.

What is stopping any real electable officials from joining in. Assuming that the very far right votes to be spread out among the Palin/Trump types. I would think that would clear the way for a more normal Republican like Cristie or the Chinese Ambassador.
Or is more then %50 of the GOP Birther now?

Yes, actually. Recent polls have shown this to be the case.

In hypothetical match-ups, the only candidate who currently even matches Obama is Huckabee.

Of course, it's still early and there's plenty of things that can change.

Does me too, but I think that's due mostly to two things on his part: Name recognition and lack of any real criticism outside of the blogs and pundits. Most folks really aren't paying attention right now because there's no real field, just a bunch of hypothetical candidates and a handful going "I'm thinking about possibly running."

Cantor has stood up to Trump but I think that he did that because that is easy. And Trump can always say that he is the establishment defense.
The most critical people are far less critical of the people that they consider on the same side as them. And more tolerate of them even when they disagree with them.
(I found the same thing when listening to Kirk Cameron saying that Mormons and Catholics are not being Christian and don't call them selves Christian. But he won't exclude their numbers when talking about a poll showing how many Christians are in the world. Nor is this a well known stance of his.)

99 Fozzie Bear  Mon, Apr 18, 2011 1:51:45pm

I just feel like Huckabee has exactly the kind of "aw shucks" personal likability that the American electorate can never get enough of. There are a lot of independents that vote based on who they like personally, and don't know a damn thing about the policy or process. Huckabee is the kind of guy who can get their votes, even if his policies are nutso.

Hopefully, the primaries will chew him up, and we won't have to worry about it.

I've said it before, but I have to say it again; you Americans have the most interesting politics. Our talking heads are no more interesting than the remains of the decapitated chicken after the body has run off into the bushes.

Late to the thread, but can you imagine if the logs listed "Zulu Time" instead of "UTC"?

I can imagine that in Worthing's terminal state of ignorance he would associate it with Zulu warriors throwing spears at God-fearing white people, and make a free-association with Obama in the White House.
