Poll: 48% of Iowa Republicans Are Birthers

The base is totally nuts
Wingnuts • Views: 28,434

The latest survey from Public Policy Polling shows that nearly half of the Republican voters in Iowa are Birthers — and another 26% “aren’t sure” whether President Obama was born in the US.

And this is also reflected in the national numbers, in poll after poll. The Republican base has gone completely looney tunes — the majority now believe a scurrilous racist myth about the first African American president.

This is why, when I see arguments that Donald Trump’s previous liberal stances will hurt his chances with the GOP base, I have to laugh. Trump is leading the pack, or close to the top in most of the polls, because he’s giving the Republican voter exactly what he/she wants. His past positions are simply irrelevant to this crowd.

I’ve asked before but I don’t know who it reflects more poorly on: The Iowa Republican rank and file for believing this tripe or the people like Trump who know better that sell it to them.

Trump’s actually trolling the country, I believe

Trump loves being the center of attention, check out what all his properties look like! The most tasteless lunacy imaginable. He has no intention of running seriously for president IMO

The observation about Trump’s past positions is very astute. As long as he’s beating the birther drum, his shift to the right on many other issues will be a secondary consideration and something he can explain away, now that he has “come to Jesus.”

I don’t remember the blog, but I was highly entertained by a comment about a possible Trump/Palin 2012 campaign slogan: “You’re fired!” “I quit!”

I’d rate Trump’s seriousness around Alan Keyes’ when he ran. Trump will recede into a pinprick in the face of a real campaign.

it’s great media, it’s a great story! And everybody wins. Trump gets his publicity, the media gets their intrigue. The GOP loses because their candidates are being eclipsed by this Jerry Springer-esque schtick.

Who in the base will vote for trump? Which God Fearing little old lady baptist or tea-party guy is going to take him seriously?

Trump and the media. In collusion.

Actually, a poll just out from PPP shows Trump not resonating that well in Iowa despite his fanatical birtherism. They’re all longing for Huck to enter the race:

The reason behind Trump’s posture on the birth cert., besides blatant pandering, may be the one he just gave to George Stephanopoulos: He’ll release his tax records when Obama releases his birth certificate. Long form.

It’s only primary (caucus) voters that were polled, so these are the highly-motivated zealots that are being sampled here. Ron Paul came in 3rd in favorability, after Huckabee and Palin.

I don’t know — being pretty much tied for second place isn’t doing that poorly. He’s doing a lot better than Romney nationally.

Huckabee has done his share of pandering to the Birther base, too. And he has better credentials as a raving theocratic fanatic, which is also popular with the right wing base.

I remember the crap that kids my generation would parrot about Clinton. Like the most hilarious one was that he had sold the country’s nuclear secrets to the Chinese. My ten year old brother has told me about some of the crap his classmates and friends parrot about Obama. Was really glad to hear from him that he stood up to that nonsense. I don’t share my political views in front of his friends though I did make it known that I voted for Obama. And had to point out the absurdness of making a big deal out of his first name since as I recall Barack and my own first name have similar meanings just in different languages. Tried a little humor too, pointing out that John McCain’s middle name is one sometimes seen in girls.

Donald Trump wants to build a $100-million ballroom in the White House

I called up the White House about a year ago,” the boisterous billionaire told ABC News’ George Stephanopoulos. “And I saw that they were having lots of functions for people like the president of China … and I said, ‘Listen, every time I see a function, you put an old broken canvas tent that they probably pay some guy, some local guy a fortune for.’ I said, ‘I will build you, free of charge,’ to a very high official at the White House, ‘one of the great ballrooms of the world,’ ” Trump said.

The official was David Axelrod, who confirmed with ABC that the proposed ballroom would be a lot like the gaudy white-and-gold spectacle at Trump’s 118-room, 65,000-square-foot-plus Palm Beach, Fla., estate, Mar-A-Lago.

Trump says such a room would cost “maybe $100 million. Anywhere from $50 to $100 million.”

freeper trump thread - i can haz kookoo 4 kokopuffs?

I never paid too much attention to Donald Trump. I knew he made millions by going bankrupt and had a splashy divorce. Then he had a reality TV show that I never saw.

Now I can’t believe the more he says the more I like him

Donald is giving the GOP the enema it so richly deserves.

Ross Perot II

Pretending to run to the right of the GOP potential candidates, and pretending to be concerned about a birth cert (that even Ann Coulter says is a non-issue) is designed to do two things:

1. Turn the primary race into a food fight, drawing candidates into loaded arguments that can be used against them later; and

2. Aping his fellow hyper-self-promoting-wheeler-dealer-turned-election-scoundrel-arrogant-unstable-untrustworthy-creep…Perot, Mister Trump will run as an indy in order to take conservative votes away from actual candidates.

Oh I am sure that if FR had been around then, there would have been many, many freepers who would have painted Reagan as a left-wing RINO…I have no doubt.

Karl Rove’s treasonous and Liberal ways paved the way for Barack Obama. In fact, the way Rove and the GOP are acting now…especially regarding OBama Eligibility….they are helping Obama win a second term

When you barely beat Al Gore and John Kerry in elections….you are no genius. You can get a monkey to do that

Trump against the debt ceiling….I guess that will be used as the reason for the GOP to cave in to Obama on this

The wussiness of the GOP will get Obama re-elected. Heck, the GOP, and the Liberal FReeper posters hating on Trump…probably want Obama nominated as the GOP candidate

I am more concerned with GOP and GOP Media (Beck, Coulter, Breitbart) giving cover to Obama on the Eligibility issue than Trump changing from Liberal to Conservative. Be more wary of those who are turning liberal (Beck, Coulter, etc)…than those seeing the light

True, although Perot is a fungus, at least he was a vet.

Trump doesn’t know a major from a sergeant major, and never spent a day in uniform. (Just like his secret pal, Obama, eh?)

If Bush would have been even a moderately good president, we’d never have a Chicago neighborhood level Communist for president today.

Republican agenda at work….
Rep. John Davis’ bill would cap the sales tax on boats costing over $250,000

Given all the pressing needs of the state, it’s good to know that our state lawmakers have time this session for an especially down-on-their-luck group. Not nursing home residents, not schoolkids, not state employees or the disabled. Nope, it’s yacht owners.

Yes, today a House committee discussed giving a tax break to wealthy yacht-buyers. Under House Bill 2187, by Rep. John Davis, a Houston Republican, the tax on sales of boats over $250,000 would be capped at $15,625. For a $20 million yacht, this would work out to a tax reduction of 99 percent. Those buying smaller, cheaper boats would continue to pay the current 6.25 percent sales tax.

TX Seniors Face Dire Cuts to Long-Term Care

Many Texas seniors will be hit hard if the state Senate Finance Committee can’t find a way this week to restore funding to long-term care programs.

Under the budget already passed by the House, seniors now getting in-home care could be forced into nursing homes, says Trey Berndt, AARP of Texas’ associate state director for advocacy. At the same time, he says, nursing homes could be forced to reduce their quality of care - or shut their doors entirely.
