Why Sen. Ensign Really Quit: Other Women, At Least One More Staffer

Shocka!
Wingnuts • Views: 33,923

Imagine my surprise.

WHY SEN. ENSIGN REALLY QUIT (Hint: It wasn’t, as his statement claimed, because of concern about his family): N.Y. Times’ Eric Lipton reports the Nevada Republican was going to have to give sworn testimony about his sex scandal to the Senate Ethics Committee on May 4. His resignation takes effect May 3. What a guy!

—“Ensign bolted to avoid more public embarrassment,” by John Bresnahan and Manu Raju: “Ensign told associates that he was ‘100 percent certain’ the Ethics Committee would hold public hearings into the scandal … The ethics panel is still likely to issue a public report laying out its findings.”

Sources tell Playbook that Ensign knew he could face questions about OTHER WOMEN and at least one additional staffer.

But Ensign told associates that he was “100 percent certain” the Ethics Committee would hold public hearings into the scandal, turning a private matter into a media-free-for-all, one of his friends said.

When working as a ‘public servant,’ I don’t think messing around with staffers that are also on the public payroll can remain a ‘private matter.’

So, he bolts from office the day before he’d have to give sworn testimony. What better way to avoid painful and embarrassing sound bites in future political runs?

But now that they say that the congressional investigation will continue regardless, can he unresign? I’m sure that’s what he’s wondering, as he bangs his empty head against a wall.

Sounds like he should be worried about painful and embarrassing smackdowns from his family— the one he claimed he was stepping down to take care of. Yeah, he’s a real gentleman, this one.

Bill Clinton committed a “felony” while I just made a “mistake”. — John Ensign (more or less).

Apparently now we see it’s not a mistake. Instead it’s the plural: mistakes.

John Ensign, asshat:

“Sadly, the effort to redefine marriage against the wishes of a majority of the people is, with help from activist judges, succeeding,” Ensign said. “In order to defend the institution of marriage, uphold the rights of individual states, and maintain the will of the people, I believe we are compelled to amend our country’s constitution.”

“The effort to pass a constitutional amendment reaffirming marriage as being between a man and a woman only is being undertaken strictly as a defense of marriage against the attempt to redefine it and, in the process, weaken it,” Ensign said. “Marriage is an extremely important institution in this country and protecting it is, in my mind, worth the extraordinary step of amending our constitution.”

and

“I came to that conclusion recently, and frankly it’s because of what he put his whole Cabinet through and what he has put the country through,” Ensign said Thursday, becoming the first member of the Nevada delegation to call for Clinton to quit. “He has no credibility left.”

It never makes a stitch of sense, when these scumbags make a run for the exit while bleating that they’re resigning so as to “spend more time with my family” or to avoid “hurting them.” Yet apparently their family never entered into their mind when they were deciding whether or not to drop trou.

Amazing. Saint Reagan got divorced and had a child only 7 months after his divorce. Now how did that happen?

* Ronald Reagan - divorced the mother of two of his children. Married Nancy Davis who bore him a daughter only 7 months after the marriage.
* Bob Dole - divorced the mother of his child, who had nursed him through the long recovery from his war wounds.
* Newt Gingrich - divorced his wife who was dying of cancer.
* Dick Armey - Former House Majority Leader - divorced
* Sen. Phil Gramm of Texas - divorced
* Gov. John Engler of Michigan - divorced
* Former Gov. Pete Wilson of California - divorced
* George Will - divorced
* Sen. Lauch Faircloth - divorced
* Rush Limbaugh - Rush and his current wife Marta have six marriages and four divorces between them.
* Rep. Bob Barr of Georgia - Barr has been married three times. Barr had the audacity to author and push the “Defense of Marriage Act.”
The current joke making the rounds on Capitol Hill is “Bob Barr, WHICH marriage are you defending?”
* Sen. Alfonse D’Amato of New York - divorced
* Sen. John Warner of Virginia - divorced (once married to Liz Taylor)
* Gov. George Allen of Virginia - divorced
* Henry Kissinger - divorced
* Rep. Helen Chenoweth of Idaho - divorced
* Sen. John McCain of Arizona - divorced
* Rep. John Kasich of Ohio - divorced
* Rep. Susan Molinari of New York (2000 Republican National Convention Keynote Speaker) - divorced

I do genealogy. LOTS of oldest babies are precocious and only require seven months to gestate, including Winston Churchill, who despite having been 10 pounds at birth was EARLY and the result of his mother riding in a carriage over rough roads or something. He was EARLY and nobody in the Churchil family will hear otherwise.

In fairness to Nancy, she had nothing to do with Reagan’s divorce. Jane Wyman got bored.

Rush Limbaugh - Rush and his current wife Marta have six marriages and four divorces between them.

His current wife’s name is Kathryn. I’m not sure how that alters the statistics.

One can see why they feel the institution requires some defense. What that has to do with gay people is still a mystery.

The Fellowship, aka “the Family,” is one of the most sinister organizations in the United States. It probably matches the conspiracy industry’s “all-powerful secret society” trope more closely than any other real world group. They literally believe they have a different set of rules, based on instant forgiveness for powerful men.

Journalist Jeff Sharlet did intensive research in the Fellowship’s archives, before they were closed to the public. He also spent a month in 2002 living in a Fellowship house near Washington, and wrote a magazine article describing his experiences. In his 2008 book about the Family, he criticized their theology as an “elite fundamentalism” that fetishizes political power and wealth, consistently opposes labor movements in the U.S. and abroad, and teaches that laissez-faire economic policy is “God’s will.” He criticized their theology of instant forgiveness for powerful men as providing a convenient excuse for elites who commit misdeeds or crimes, allowing them to avoid accepting responsibility or accountability for their actions.

For the most part I am discomforted by hearing about the sexual escapades of others and feel that as long as they are doing their jobs well that their bedroom habits are none of my business. It really should be left between them and their partners and/or families. However, when they make their job the monitoring of other people’s sexuality and activities with finger wagging, demonizing, and freedom compromising laws, all bets are off.

Fuck ‘em and let them rot in the stink of their hypocrisy.

Reading about the C street place now. Why are they getting free cleaning from college-aged interns who are not paid? Interns are supposed to be learning valuable life skills, not vacuuming hallways.

Do they report this? Should they have to report it as a gift or pay taxes?

(Sorry if I seem touchy, but as the chief cleaner in this house, I am fully aware how much work actually goes into keeping a place clean, and it irritates me when people act as those they are someone special and shouldn’t have to pick up and do their share. Most of the people on the list are not fundamentalists, but they do align with fundamentalist causes and values in many cases. Ensign, the only Pentecostal in the Congress, is an exception. He is a full-blown holy roller.

Fundamentalists, in turn, definitely stigmatize divorce. 30 years ago, I was engaged to a really beautiful young teacher here in West Texas. It was my fault I didn’t marry her, and I regret that deeply, but opposition from her parents’ was also a factor, a big one. Her parents were fundamentalists. Her father was a well-known fundy theologian and writer in fact. They opposed the marriage because I was divorced. They accepted that the divorce was not my fault, and they believed I was justified in seeking it. Nevertheless, they insisted that it disqualified me from a further marriage as long as my first wife was still alive.
My ex-fiancee went on to marry a faithful church-going type who did not have this stigma. Ironically, they are now divorced. Sure enough, her now-aged parents insist that she cannot re-marry, even though she is 57 years old now.

I’m not sure they opposed the divorce, just as they did not disapprove of mine in and of itself. They do accept adultery as valid grounds and her old man was apparently something of an alley cat. It is just re-marriage that they oppose. They believe it is de facto adultery.

Her parents’ attitude is an example of something I’ve noticed over and over from Fundamentalists: They love to use their version of the literal word to justify what is otherwise an obvious injustice. In my case, my wife had committed adultery with my brother, run away with him (taking my daughter with them), and had not told anyone where they were for two weeks. Yet, according to fundamentalists I was required to keep my vows to the traitorous bitch and never remarry lest I be committing adultery too.
An example from history: It was barbarically cruel to kill a confused old woman for trying to cast spells, but the Bible said witches should not be suffered to live, so off to the stake she went.
The Hamitic curse so beloved of racists is probably the biggest example of a Bible-based unjustice, one that persists to this day in certain circles.

Well, the FDA is a big part of the problem. The food rules require a lot of the chemicals and preservatives that we eat way too much of. Even with Mrs Obama’s efforts I don;t think we’ll see common sense food policy in this country anytime soon.

Buying hydroponics equipment is a really great way yo have your door kicked down by the police…

I suppose the guy should be grateful, though.

In Prince George County, Maryland (or an awful lot of Virgina, etc), they would have shot all of his pets immediately and then had an accidental discharge into his chest with an MP-5 submachine gun when he complained about his butchered pets.

Wait. The fact that someone purchased hydroponics equipment is now enough to qualify as probable cause? What the hell?

Not really, but it has been abused as such. One manufacturer had their entire customer list (years and years of sales) taken by law enforcement. Of course the theory is hardly baseless, as hydroponic equipment is used by pot growers.

Of course gun registrations are not used to pursue possible armed robbers… Buying a cargo van really does not attract Immigration authorities…

On a lighter note, I can’t even imagine trying to tell my daughter who she should marry. She would give me “the look,” (so heartbreakingly like her mother’s) and say something like, “That remind me, daddy, have you been tested for dementia yet?”

A few months ago I researched the possibility of legally growing weed for registered medical marijuana patients. It didn’t take me very long to figure out the medical marijuana scene in Portland is really sketchy and having your information stored on a government computer seems like a quick way to end up in jail.

I regularly buy parts for my business at hydro shops, they know lighting and fluid movement. I also have my algae on a 12/12 lighting cycle. Two indicators for a grow op. I wouldn’t be surprised at all to have my door kicked in. Of course all they will only ever find is less than an oz plus a lawsuit.

Right. It’s certainly something that could reasonably indicate further inquiry, but by itself it shouldn’t be sufficient (This is assuming there wasn’t more that they were going on).

Yes. The Fourth Amendment has been effectively eviscerated over the last 25 years, and anything the police want, they get when it comes to getting a warrant or especially when it comes to beating the shit out of you and then charging you with resisting arrest after the fact. (The police in this case ‘seized her house and prevented her or her son from entering it when she demanded a search warrant)

I was working at a nice gold refinery in a bad, bad neighborhood. I hear a helicopter in constant orbit over us. I go out to look and as I round a corner of our building I see several cops with guns pointed right at me. They tell me to approach them, as we are on opposite sides of a locked iron gate. I do as instructed and I have to then tell them about the gun I have on and that I work there. Right that second another guy who was in charge of the place comes strolling out wondering where I went…

Some smart and careful LAPD cops disarmed me without harm and asked me to open the gate. Except I did not have the key in my pocket. The other guy did. Whew! As it turns out a backhoe had cut our phone lines a few blocks away and triggered the red alert by our alarm company. The cops rolled up on a locked secure facility worried we had been taken over. Their professionalism kept me alive that day.

In the end we gave them a tour, and they eventually used our place to watch a crack house across Jefferson Bl. Which they eventually took down. A few months later the Rodney King riots broke out and that neighborhood had many, many fires.

Yep.

I know there are good, dedicated and conscientious officers out there. I also know that the justice system has nothing to really do with justice. It is about getting a result. When you meet an officer, you are dealing with a person who can kill you and whose word counts ten times the weight of yours. I recall a community organizer in Chicago was training residents to deal with the police like they would a dangerous, wild animal. In other words, speak slowly and carefully and make no sudden movements.

Basically, do not talk to the police unless you called them to begin with. They are not there to be your friend, and they will fuck you up if you give them any excuse. Say nothing, do nothing.

You were really fucking lucky.

This poor bastard in Long Beach never had a chance. He was playing with a sprinkler nozzle last December and he was shot to pieces by two officers who were concealed in bushes nearby after they were called by a neighbor who thought the guy had a gun.

He had a damned sprinkler.

The Long Beach police spokesman admitted the two officers did not identify themselves or demand that he drop the object, and it seems the guy had no idea that the police were even there at all. They opened fire with a shotgun and a semi auto pistol.

Police officials said the object was actually a pistol-grip water nozzle, and when it was pointed directly at an officer, the officers opened fire, killing Zerby at the scene.”

I can see how that tragedy unfolded. Yes I was lucky. Yes I had a real gun concealed. No, I was not drunk. No I did not point a gun shaped object at the police. Damn shame neither the neighbor nor the cops saw it for what it was.

Witnesses at the scene all agreed that the officers never identified themselves. The department spokesmen said they were in a position of concealment and opened fire when he turned towards them It does not appear that the guy even knew they were there, since they were hidden and did not identify themselves.

Perfect Timing - Rebel hits a Kadafi tank with rpg7 in Misurata

Considering the last tank “attack” video I saw was throwing rorck, shooting small arms and getting run over, I think the rebels are getting better.

Nice shot. Looks like he hit the treads at the back. That tank ain’t going nowhere for a while.

I’ve been without a car payment for the last 4 years. I’m running that thing into the ground before I get another one!

A ‘73 Land Rover never gets run into the ground—mine will outlive me, though it will morph to LPG, biodeisel or electric drive someday.

Yep, he seems like a real douchebag now. Or maybe I just wasn’t paying enough attention back then.

Hard to say whether he changed or his real self shows more now. Nobody needs to talk about the Fed to run for governor.

re: #138 wlewisiii

I was a tanker on active duty. That was suicide.

No infantry support, going too fast to overwatch watch, commander buttoned up and in an urban environment. If that’s the quality of Mo’s remaining troops, the rebels are winning.

Thanks for the informed opinion. I think it’s a relatively new phenomenon that the rebels can hit anything even at close range. I watched a video a few weeks ago of a rebel shooting an rpg at a tank in the open an he missed at about 40 yards. I think a little bit of coaching and supervision is helping the rebels a lot.

Here’s a sample of this Teahadist decrying the accusations of tea party racism with… racism:

“Barack Hussein Obama. Mmm mmm hmm. And Ben Jealous of the NAACP. John Conyers, Maxine Waters, Charlie Rangel, and all the other criminals in the Congressional Black Caucus. And Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, and all the nigra race pimps out there. On behalf of the Tea Party we are sick and tired of being called racist when our mission is to educate legal American voters on the most conservative candidates to consider voting for. That’s it. We are good Americans, we are moral Americans. We are religious and non. We are taxpayers, we are civil to our neighbors, and we are law-abiding citizens. We love this country and we are willing to fight for what’s right. Not political correctness, not for the Republicans, not for the Democrats, and especially not for the liberals. The Tea Party is tired of Blacks, nigras, Muslims, and Hispanics, especially the illegals, calling us racist for trying to save the America that we love.”

Breitbart. He was out for revenge against Jealous when he did the Sherrod smear. “It’s really the NAACP that are the racists, not the tea party”.

Well, this comes as no surprise, but it does give me a little satisfaction all the same.

Palin’s Fox fueled fifteen minutes of fame are almost up.

Sarah Palin’s Fox News airtime decline can be traced back to one incident, blood libel. According to New York Magazine, Roger Ailes told Sarah Palin not to post the blood libel video, but Palin went rogue and bit the hand that feeds her. After this she was a lot less visible on Fox, and now a few months later, she has been replaced by Donald Trump.

That vid offended a lot of people, and supporters of Israel especially. And many FNC viewers are supporters of Israel. So what Palin did was threaten Fox’s viewer base if they didn’t distance themselves from her.

Who’s writing a book about her? I suppose the question should be, Who’s not writing a book about her? Publishers are probably rushing to production while people still care enough to spend the twenty bucks or so on a book about the self-absorbed one.

Man it’s getting a bit exciting up here in the mountains this afternoon. One of the country sheriff cars TURNED AROUND IN MY DRIVEWAY and has now parked itself at the intersection 25 feet below my house.

I’m not sure why? There hasn’t been any major drug dealing at that intersection since May 1955. I know we have a herd of 8 deer that’s been grazing on the side of our mountain here… but I think that’s still legal.

I wonder… could someone in the neighborhood have complained about me walking out to the end of my driveway, going to get the mail, in my burgundy Nick and Nora pajamas? I don’t think that’s illegal… but maybe I’m suppose to change my wardrobe occasionally? Maybe I’ll step out in my speedos?

Maybe not?

I do genealogy. LOTS of oldest babies are precocious and only require seven months to gestate, including Winston Churchill, who despite having been 10 pounds at birth was EARLY and the result of his mother riding in a carriage over rough roads or something. He was EARLY and nobody in the Churchil family will hear otherwise.

In fairness to Nancy, she had nothing to do with Reagan’s divorce. Jane Wyman got bored.

I couldn’t stand Nancy Reagan, but she never got bored. Her passion for Ronald was obvious, and it lasted a lifetime.

They were both, to my mind, rather shallow, self-absorbed, not terribly bright people, but they loved one another.

For the cooks on a budget: Ramen Hacks: 30+ Easy Ways to Upgrade Your Instant Noodles
I suggest throwing away the flavor packets altogether. It’s just msg and salt. A little seasoning, a little very and a condiment or two is all you need.

This kind of defeats the purpose of buying and eating ramen. One package=one meal for less than a dollar. Some of these ideas raise the price of the bowl of food to well over $2 or $3 dollars.
