Tech Note: Image Uploading for Comments

Poor man’s image hosting
LGF • Views: 32,854

The tech note for today is a new feature in the comment posting form: there’s now a button labeled “Upload Image.” It opens a popup window in which you can upload an image file from your computer to LGF, using the standard HTML two-step file uploading form. You then get a permanent link to that image hosted on our massive nitrogen-cooled server farm far beneath Denver International Airport.

(Actually, it’s just one server and space is not unlimited, which is why the maximum file size for user images is 200K. But the physical dimensions are unlimited, because when it’s posted in a comment it becomes an auto-scaling Javascript popup.)

After doing the two-step uploading dance, you’ll see another screen with the name of the uploaded image, and a box containing the image’s permanent URL (pre-selected, in case you want to copy it to the clipboard).

There’s also a line in which you can enter a description for the image. If you leave this blank, the code that will be inserted into the comment posting form will simply be the image’s URL, which is automatically converted to a popup image link when you post the comment.

If you enter a description, it becomes the text of a link to the popup image, and some additional HTML code is inserted into your comment.

Note that the image itself doesn’t appear in your comment — instead there’s a clearly identified link that opens a Javascript popup lightbox-style image. You can see the effect before posting your comment by using our beloved Preview button.

It should be fairly simple to figure out, so give it a try. This is a close relative of the image uploading script from our LGF Pages posting form, so it will be somewhat familiar to those registered users who’ve posted LGF Pages containing images.

The fine print: we reserve the right to remove images that are offensive, or that violate copyrights.

Wow, pawlenty is just...another Republican like all the rest :)

When Will Steger was 15 years old, he and his brother piloted an old motorboat down the Mississippi River from Minnesota to New Orleans. At 17, he journeyed to the Arctic. At 41, he became the first man in history to travel unsupported to the North Pole and come back alive. He's traveled across Antarctica by sled (another first), hopped freights, and found his purpose at a mountain monastery.

But there's just one challenge the Arctic explorer couldn't complete: Keeping Tim Pawlenty honest on global warming.

After working closely with Steger for two years to combat climate change, the former Minnesota governor and current GOP presidential contender abruptly reversed himself on the issue in 2008, just as his name was being floated as a possible presidential running mate for Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.). Steger and Pawlenty haven't spoken since. Today, the politician who once cut a radio ad with Janet Napolitano calling for a federal cap on greenhouse gas emissions calls his work on climate change "stupid" and says the science is uncertain at best.

"I'm baffled by that—did he actually say that?" says Steger, when asked about Pawlenty's recent statements. "I'm baffled by that. But I think he's getting information from the wrong source and it's really too bad for our children. It's reckless."

On the updates about Libya, here is the Berber Belt that is giving Qaddafi so much grief. Also, for the past 2-3 hours, I've seen Twitter rumors that street fighting is occuring again in Az Zawiyah and Zuwarah. These are coastal towns West of Tripoli. If true, it shows a) Qaddafi losing control of Tripolitania, and b) if this somehow works, Qaddafi may have one hell of a time getting supplies. They are on the only major coastal road.

Pope: Humanity Isn't Random Product Of Evolution
VATICAN CITY April 23, 2011, 06:33 pm ET

Pope Benedict XVI marked the holiest night of the year for Christians by stressing that humanity isn't a random product of evolution.

Benedict emphasized the Biblical account of creation in his Easter Vigil homily Saturday, saying it was wrong to think at some point "in some tiny corner of the cosmos there evolved randomly some species of living being capable of reasoning and of trying to find rationality within creation, or to bring rationality into it."

"If man were merely a random product of evolution in some place on the margins of the universe, then his life would make no sense or might even be a chance of nature," he said. "But no, reason is there at the beginning: creative, divine reason."

Church teaching holds that Roman Catholicism and evolutionary theory are not necessarily at odds: A Christian can, for example, accept the theory of evolution to help explain developments, but is taught to believe that God, not random chance, is the origin of the world. The Vatican, however, warns against creationism, or the overly literal interpretation of the Biblical account of creation.

Sounds like that's what they're pressing. "Yeah, you can believe that evolution works, but you still have to believe that God set the path that that evolution was going to follow."

Like I've always said, "intelligent design" is little more than creationism in a lab coat. A way for creationists to claim that they support science, then claim that science is wrong when it says that nature and not God is responsible for different creatures coming to be.

I have two cats, Mila and Milo. The little boos were adopted from an agency out of Santa Clara county called C.A.R.E., or Companion Animal Rescue Effort. Mila had been plucked by C.A.R.E. staff off of a cart of kittens being prepared for euthanasia by the ASPCA, and Milo was rescued by firefighters (and later turned over to C.A.R.E.) when the house he was living in caught fire. I was told that his mom didn't survive. To this day he is very frightened of flames, so in my house, all I have are flashlights in case of power loss.

Here's a shot of two of them cuddling.

They also keep track of my internet stats here. Then they say "well I'm not a stalker you're a stalker". Uh, no. They're seriously stalkers.

OK, just to see if this works better -- now the slideshow feature is limited to each comment, instead of flipping through all the images on the page. (This happens in new comments - previously posted comments will still be part of a page-wide slideshow. Reload the page to refresh the Javascript code.)

You can create a slideshow within a comment just by posting multiple images in one comment - they'll all have the same unique identifier that lets the slideshow see that they're part of the same "gallery."

re: #188 albusteve

it's the internet...Charles is the only one to be concerned about

When I was in college and still doing a lot of BBSing, I'd raw telnet from my college to the UW, and then a friend of mine gave me a password to just dial out using the UW's own modems, so I could hang out on the BBSes where my friends and bandmates were. That way, no long distance charges!

But anyway, these were BBSes in White Center, near Seattle, which was a really shitty area of Puget Sound when I was growing up. And there were a lot of hooligan nerd types, the sorts of guys who fancy themselves phreakers and prankster types. And I was arguing with them about computer crime, about politics and calling them idiots, as I do, and I made them extremely angry, as I did, and these guys weren't dumb, they actually knew who I was and where I lived!

And I didn't care, of course. They were nerds! They escalated to a bunch of prank phone calls, some dumb online threats, and I dunno, I think one of them sent me something in the mail, I don't remember. But that's all that became of it, my mother was pissed because some of the pranks woke her up. The worst thing that happened is my mother called me up at college, wondering who the hell was calling her 5am for me from home. They couldn't call me at college because they were afraid of the college's switchboard operator, who you had to speak to before calling a dorm. I think they eventually just got bored and stopped.

and that was in 1997, Clinton was in office. Everything old is new again! Every day brings such tears of joy to these old fisherman's eyes, we really just never grow up, it's all the same predictable behavior, ad infinitum. I just smile, it's like Groundhog day :)

honest queston: where do you draw the "offensive" line with pictures of war?

what do you mean by offensive

I always figured offensiveness was more about the context in which pictures of war are used, the pictures themselves aren't the problem

But if you take a bunch of violent war photography and then use it to stir up fury with easily led people...

The 46 Year-Long Republican War On Medicare continues

- Ronald Reagan: Before he was president, Reagan actually lead a campaign against the creation of Medicare. He ominously warned: “[I]f you don’t [stop Medicare] and I don’t do it, one of these days you and I are going to spend our sunset years telling our children and our children’s children what it once was like in America when men were free.”

Loyalists to Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi killed eight rebel fighters in a rare attack earlier this week in an opposition-held region near the Egyptian border, a medical official and an opposition spokesman told CNN Saturday.

The regime loyalists, riding in a convoy of nine vehicles, attacked an oil pumping station in the Libyan desert on Thursday, about 300 kilometers (186 miles) southwest of Tobruk, said Dr. Rida Benfayed, a physician who claimed he treated a rebel fighter injured in the attack.

Tobruk is a rebel stronghold one hour east of the Egyptian border, and site of a key oil exporting facility where the rebels shipped out their first consignment of oil earlier this month.

Benfayed said the gunmen opened fire on a team of nine rebel military guards manning the pumping station. The regime loyalists set a tire on fire to burn the remains of a senior rebel guard, the doctor said.

The only guard who survived was shot twice in the leg but managed to escape and drive himself to Tobruk where he's in stable condition at a hospital.

Welcome to the LGF Home for Recovering Wingnuts. Please tell us your story.

//

I've always been a socon.
For myself and how I live.
And part of that, for me, is having the gov't stay out of the way as much as possible, so that I'm free to live as conservatively as I wish, and others are free to live however the heck they want.

Which means, of course, I think it's just as silly for a city to tell McDonald's what sort of toys it can put into its Happy Means, as I think it is for the gov't to be involved in marriage. I find some liberals are happy with certain types of government interference, but not other types. Ditto conservatives. I don't want any of it.

Ah, I remember the Swiftboat stuff well. To this day, I'm still conflicted over the '04 election, as I know in retrospect that Bush was a piss-poor president, but at the time I was convinced that we need a "strong" leader to prosecute the "War on Terror," regardless of how badly he was fraking over the domestic scene.

Ah.

I saw the video earlier of that awful beating at a McDonald's in Baltimore, and wondered what it was all about; that wasn't clear from the video. The woman being beaten was a transgendered woman.

The beating was terrible, and none of the McDonald's employees seemed to be helping the woman. In fact, one was recording it on his cell phone, which is where the video came from. He also warns the girls doing the beating that they need to leave 'cause the cops are on the way. He's apparently no longer employed. Duh, ya think?

The only real lunacy I can claim is that I used to be a True Believer in JFK assassination conspiracy, and while I wasn't completely convinced, I also believed it was entirely plausible that the Majestic-12 documents were real, as was Bob Lazar's story. Importantly, I really wanted it to be true.

Partly, I was looking for any way to discredit Obama. Even if I didn't believe what I was reading. Starting to read Corsi and actually buying into birtherism are two different things of course. Hey, but that's life just like believing in the JFK stuff. David Horowitz used to be a fire breathing Communist. At least I can say I was never a fire breathing anything.

What's the difference between those guys and any other mercenary? Is it just because of Iraq, and the fact that that comment came from the Then-Hated-Enemy-Of-LGF, Markos Moulitsas? How much of that was blog rivalry? I wasn't here for that stuff. I wasn't reading Kos either, because Kos was boring as hell, whiny as hell. I was running my own blog. I've never shed tears, nor lost sleep over the deaths themselves. I understand that they're mercs, that they're doing the security bit for what they see as easy cash. But they're still human, and desecrating their corpses like that was just utterly sickening. Looking at it and uttering "Screw Them" is, to me personally, no different than the dipshits on the Right who got a good deal of glee out of the Abu Ghraib pictures, who have no problem with torture or rendition of POWs in this war because they're all "terrorists," even the guys who have since been cut loose. It's that dehumanization, whether it be of mercs or POWs, that makes me sick to my stomach.

I never did MMOs, because I never liked playing video games with other people unless it was directly competitive. I liked solitary gaming, more calming. The instant there were other people in the world chatting, it stopped being a game to me. felt like an obligation. I loved single player RPGs. I could write a thesis on single player RPGs.

I spent years playing first person shooters, occasionally went to tournaments, Quake, HL, Unreal, Shogo, made mods and levels and character animations. but never played an MMO.

I liked Earthdawn a whole lot. Much more fun than it's Shadowrun inspiration for me, though I did like how they tied the two together with that dragon. CoC was good for one shots too. I've never been a GURPS system fan but I've stolen more from their sourcebooks than from anyone other than GDW.

But Traveller was the first RPG I bought in 1976 after seeing Star Wars (a week before it exploded on the cover of Time). I come back to it like that proverbial moth... Gah, if only I could run the Spinward Main...

I cut off ties with anyone who repeated the Swiftboat shit. (and later I realized I'd done the right thing, some of those people are birthers now) The desecrated bodies just seemed to me to be What Happens In War. Civilians were killed, servicemen were killed. Why are these mercenaries the thing that keeps coming up? The mercenaries elected to be there for a lottery like payday. The civilians sure didn't.

My heart goes out to the people who lived there, who were killed. not the cowboys who came in looking for excitement.

I also consider mercenaries, and the industry of such, to be a form of war profiteering, so I guess that is the core of why I lack sympathy. I consider it a step backwards into barbarism and animal behavior. And I feel I was correct, after all the stuff coming out with Blackwater, KBR, etc

I consider the simple existence of mercenaries to be evil, and to be avoided at all costs. it brings us closer to barbarism and inhumanity. it's anti-civilization.

Occasionally war is the proverbial necessary evil. See 1939 to 1945 for one example there of. That's as may be, but if we must fight then we must have a something mutually contradictory - a fully professional conscript army. Only a military that has all fighting for the same cause - from some poor bastard in Brooklyn to George HW Bush - can there be moral legitimacy. Mercenaries are inherently outside of those bounds.

I go to the oldest Episcopalian church in Madison. This was for most of it's time the church of the elite. There is an expensive, exquisite, stained glass window in our church that was dedicated in 1949. Dedicated to the giver's son. Who died over Europe as a bomber pilot in 1943.
