The Far Right Refocuses on States

The Republican Party’s total war on women’s rights goes local
Politics • Views: 41,014

They failed to get their agenda through Congress, so the atavist religious right is now refocusing their efforts on local politics. And Kansas is ground zero for the state-level effort to destroy Planned Parenthood.

Budgets winding their way through the Legislature would redirect about $300,000 in federal family planning funds from Planned Parenthood to state and local health clinics.

The move is similar to one in Washington that almost led to a government shutdown early this month, when Republicans wanted to shut off federal funding to Planned Parenthood in the belief that it provided indirect support for abortions. …

“We have the prospect of being the first state in the nation to enact that kind of law,” said Peter Brownlie, president of Planned Parenthood of Kansas and Mid-Missouri.

Gov. Sam Brownback, a Republican, proposed eliminating the Planned Parenthood funding in his proposed budget for fiscal 2012, which begins July 1. …

The money that goes to Planned Parenthood is sent to clinics in Wichita and Hays. They are among nine health clinics run by the organization in Kansas and mid-Missouri.

The money pays for family-planning services for low-income women. It also helps pay for contraception, pap smears and cancer screenings, among other things. It’s against federal law to use the money for abortions.

"We oppose the taking of innocent human life," said Kathy Ostrowski, state legislative director of Kansans for Life.

"The use of mandated taxes to support it is especially indefensible when more families than ever before are seeking to adopt children," Ostrowski said.

Where, oh where will they ever find children to adopt?

Thank you for your interest in adoption through the Kansas foster care system! Currently, 850 Kansas children in foster care are waiting for their forever family through adoption. Most Kansas kids are adopted by relatives, non-relative kin, and foster parents. The remainder are children for whom adoptive families need to be found. Children needing adoption are from all age groups, races and ethnicities, and socioeconomic backgrounds. However, the majority are age eight and older and there is a particular need for adoptive families for teens and African American children. Some are part of a sibling group that wants to be adopted together. Others have special needs.

Maybe somebody should remind these legislators that most of these unborn fetuses will grow up to be Democrats.

Oh yeah, but they won't be able to vote.

An assault on women reproductive rights, plus an increased push by Evangelicals to adopt, especially from 3rd world countries where they can circumvent child protection laws, nothing like indoctrination of the young to fill those seats.

“We expect adoptions will continue to rise as new movements within the Christian community raise awareness and aid for the global orphan crisis,” Bethany CEO Bill Blacquiere said.

One result has been the creation of “rainbow congregations” across the country, like the congregation Moore helps pastor in Louisville, Highview Baptist. An active adoption ministry has brought 140 adopted children into the congregation in the past five years. These children don’t recognize the flags of their home countries, Moore proudly noted at a 2010 conference, but they can all sing “Jesus Loves Me.”

Yeah, that's a real selling point. Erase their home identity and make sure they can recite dogma.

Back to the states though... This part was inevitable.

The GOP is doubling down on the Obama hates Vhristians thme, and a large number oc Christians, in the most powerful and religiously Christian major nation in the world actually believe they are a persecuted minority.

This is the wages of allowing two generations of homeschooling.

Only mushrooms grow in the dark.

We are very likely to devolve into educated states and medival states as a result.

Let's be clear please, not at all a slam on educated Christians or anyone of faith. But it is most certainly a bit of horror at the way things are headed in terms of rolling back the clock and mixing Christianity with a notion of whiteness, woman hatred and hatred of science.

I didn't mind as I tend to not give a shit about him, but then my wife opened a twitter account for her job, so I decided to block him because I didn't want him pissing in her work pool...and I was tired of having his tongue up my ass.

That said, I still don't use twitter very often. A smaller internet footprint is much better, in my opinion.

As soon as the Republicans realize they've been had by someone who is simply trying to keep his name in the press so he can drive up his reality TV value to NBC, they'll turn him into the biggest liberal plot to undermine the good natured tea party and the GOP since Abe Lincoln.

Today CNN took the Birther Meme to the woodshed:

CNN investigation: Obama born in U.S.

So naturally what Donald trump said was:

Trump claims Obama birth certificate 'missing'

Real estate mogul Donald Trump's latest claim about President Obama's birth certificate is that it's missing.

"Well I've been told very recently, Anderson, that the birth certificate is missing," Trump told CNN's Anderson Cooper Monday. "I've been told that it's not there or it doesn't exist. And if that's the case it's a big problem."

When asked from whom he received the information, Trump said he didn't want to say and that he feels bad about the situation.

"I'd love for him to produce his birth certificate so that you can fight one-on-one," Trump said in an interview set to air Monday. "If you look at what he's doing to fuel prices, you can do a great fight one-on-one, you don't need this issue."

CNN's Gary Tuchman also interviewed the former director of the Hawaii Department of Health, who said she has seen the original birth certificate in the vault at the Department of Health.

In 2008, the Obama campaign released an official document called a "certification of live birth" which indicates he was born in Hawaii. This document, which is a computerized abstract of his birth information that the State of Hawaii issues to individuals requesting their birth records, satisfies proof-of-birth requirements for various federal matters, including obtaining a passport. Several news organizations as well as the Annenberg Fact Check Project viewed the document first-hand and verified that it contained the official raised seal as well as a signature stamp of the state registrar.

There is a certain sort that can not possibly accept a black man who is vastly smarter and more successful than they are. It shines too much of a light on their own failures when those they hate are just obviously better.

Trump is simply pandering to this. That is what is so gross about it. Of course Trump knows better. He just doesn't care.

2005:

MORE HANDS-ON. No students are enrolled yet, but Trump University President Michael Sexton expects publicity from today's announcement to draw enough students in time for the start of classes later this week.

Trump University won't have any textbooks, either. No lectures, no grades -- not even teachers, most of the time. Students will be divided up into cohorts of 6 to 12 and can choose to complete the courses in either one or two weeks.

They'll log on at trumpuniversity.com to get their assignments –- entrepreneurship students will be asked to assume the role of a venture capitalist and analyze a business plan –- and submit their work to classmates for a peer review. Three such assignments, and the course is complete. "People have learned the hard way that...trying to replicate the classroom experience isn't particularly effective," says Sexton, a venture capitalist by trade.

2010:

Turns out the mogul's self-named university is a less-than-collegiate.

In a letter obtained by the New York Daily News, state educrats railed on Trump for using the term "university" to describe his online school, calling its use of the name misleading and even illegal.

Protesters waited for Congressman Paul Ryan outside a listening session at Gateway Technical College in Kenosha, many of them were seniors holding preprinted signs that read ‘Hands Off My Medicare.’

If you have time, it would also be good to tie in the current storms ravaging the US - all the weather forecasters say "La Nina", but I would think it must be influenced by changing ocean temps...

That would be very difficult to do. The causal links for a severe thunderstorm are so numerous that attribution to anything other than the immediate conditions (real time surface and mid-troposphere temps, humidity, etc) is really, really tough. It's a problem thats been looked at before, and still is, i.e., trying to find trends in tornadoes.

I learned here in the Mid WEst during the 80's that an El Nino weather pattern meant stronger storms. The El Nino this year, with warmer atmosphere = more severe weather.

Perhaps it is just me as an outsider, but I think it is time for normal thoughtful people with a conscience to leave these backwards states behind. Move to states where lunatic xenophobic mysogynists are a fringe group rather than a political force. It is only a matter of time before the abortion issue is thrown back to the states in my opinion. I say leave these neanderthals to themselves in the backwaters of the country and move on. Once they see their tax base evaporate, property values decline and employers leaving because they can't find educated workers, they will be seen for exactly what they are. The "real" America.

But Snooki isn't exactly a tea partier. She says she's an independent, because she doesn't know enough to take a side. "I only know politics about, like, you know, tanning and being a Guidette," she says. "To be honest with you, the only reason why I voted for your father was because he was really cute." She also discusses her role models—Kendra Wilkinson and Tori Spelling—and the difference between the show's locations. "In Jersey, there's Guidos everywhere," she explains. "In Miami, it was kind of different, because it's more like Spanish-oriented, and there really wasn't a lot of Guidos there."

If you live in Washington and work in Oregon, you are taxed on the portion that you earned in Oregon. (And, since Washington has a sales tax, that means you effectively pay both.)

re: #244 EmmmieG

Are you old enough to remember the great tax wars of the 80's?

Oregon tried to pass a law that if either half of a couple earned any money at all in Oregon, the couple's entire income was taxable. (As opposed to the portion earned in Oregon.)

Thus began the great tax wars. It wasn't pretty.

I'm technically old enough I think, but I never payed attention until HS >>

That sounds terrible and messed up tho' and fascinating :D

Maybe it varies by state... we also didn't collect sales tax from most of our customers (out of state people).

I'd imagine it varies by state.

Also, if you live in Washington and work in Oregon, you are paying Washington's vehicle tax, which is value based. Oregon's is a flat fee and not all that much.

In Vancouver, cops sit at the freeway entrances and write down the license plate numbers, looking for Oregon plates that routinely get off at the same exit.

Off topic, but I was curious and looked up the policies of Marine Le Pen in France. I saw one thing that struck out at me was the fact she wants to be closer to Russia that the US and the rest of Europe.

Why am I not surprised? We all know the Front National is anti-democratic. Hell, her family probably thinks the wrong side won WWII.

For good English language articles, from France, about Marine and the FN, start with this article in France 24, and then use their search function to look up further articles.

Without question, this has been Marine Le Pen’s best year yet. Since being elected to replace her father, Jean-Marie Le Pen, as the head of the far-right National Front in January, she has led the party to strong gains in local elections and consistently found herself at the top of opinion polls ahead of next year’s presidential vote.

Bit anticlimactic.

I like the Subgenius's reasoning better.

An important SubGenius event occurred on July 5, 1998: X-Day. The Church had been predicting that on this day the world would be destroyed by invading alien armies known as the X-ists (which is short for "Men from Planet X"). Only the members of the Church of the SubGenius were expected to be saved from this SubGenius version of the apocalypse, by being carried away in the spaceships of the Sex-Goddesses. When the promised cataclysm failed to manifest, Rev. Stang was tarred and feathered by his fellow SubGenius. Some claim the "tar" was actually honey and that Stang himself bought the feathers.) Nevertheless, Stang was permitted to retain his position as Church administrator, and although that day and each subsequent July 5 has passed without evidence of an alien invasion, the faithful membership still gather for the "Rupture" at an outdoor campground to herald this SubGenius holiday. The X-Day celebration took place at Brushwood Folklore Center until 2010; as of 2011 it has moved to Wisteria in Pomeroy, Ohio.

[20] Reverend Ivan Stang has given many excuses for the failure of the Rupture to happen, such as claiming that "Bob" betrayed all SubGenii, that the scriptures were accidentally read upside down (hence the real year of the Rupture will be 8661), or that due to calendrical error or sabotage it is not yet really 1998.

The right is a problem.

I don't know what Europe will do. Deep, deep crap over there.

And Schengen may end up in the trash.

And that's for starters.

Most of Europe is in better economic shape than we are. They can adjust taxes to meet required needs. We've got wingnuts, who thinks it's okay to collect 60% of required money to recover costs.

I was listening to Rush today, who was babbling about American Exceptionalism. I was thinking, "When was this? The post WWII world? When our our industrial base was was the biggest in the world because it wasn't externally shattered by the war?"

And he was bloviating on the "class war" and blah blah blah and how raising taxes on the rich would kill job creation. And then I found this fact:

Top Marginal Income Tax Rate:

1955 91% of income over 400,000

[ For 1954-1963, the highest tax rate was subject to a maximum effective rate limitation equal to 87% of statutory "taxable income."]

How was it possible for us to establish this American Exceptionalism while waging this class war against the rich?

And yet most Americans seem to buy into this bullshit.

We appear to be idiots.

I think it's simple. People as a whole are more willing to embrace an abstract idea rather than reality. Heard a statistic tonight but 1% of wage earners have 53% of the wealth while the rest of the population have 47% of the wealth. It really is things lhat make me question capitalism. That's not to say there's not things I don't like about capitalism. Quite the contrary actually but that disturbs me.

In case anyone missed Paleo-Pat's latest essay, it's a full on persecution-of-Christian themed piece (titled "When Dictators Fall, Who Rises?") aimed at making excuses for dictators, that ends with:

If one-man, one-vote democracy across the Maghreb and Middle East is almost certain to strengthen the Muslim Brotherhood and to liberate Islamists to persecute Christians, why are we for it?

When did this idol of modernity called democracy, in which none of our fathers believed, become a golden calf we all must fall down and worship?

And as usual nuts over at Townhall come out, which I guess is the whole purpose of running Buchanan's essays over there.

351 freetoken  Wed, Apr 27, 2011 2:59:36am

Yes, what Paleo-Pat means is that "one-man one-vote" means the end of Christians.

Really.

Maybe if we give certain people just, say, 3/5th of a vote each then our Christian civilization could survive, no?

They sell APPS that let US track each OTHERS' location. Which is way worse.

WASHINGTON -- The law firm King & Spalding stunned many observers Monday by abruptly withdrawing from representing the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) -- barely a week after coming under fire for signing on to defend the law on behalf of House Republicans. But the real shockwaves may have taken place within the firm, where, according to one insider, employees were at each other's throats over its decision to take on the case.

There's a lot more bravery in the legal profession than a lot of people realize

you cannot let the bigots win

“Management was divided, people were threatening to quit,” the source said. In addition, it was unclear if members of the firm’s Diversity Committee had been consulted ahead of time about taking on the case.

Real bravery is putting your livelihood on the line.

Arpaio deputies faulted in ID-theft case
[Link: www.azcentral.com...]

Maricopa County sheriff's deputies violated the constitutional rights of two Hispanic men when they stopped and detained the men as part of a 2009 identity-theft investigation at a landscaping company, according to a federal judge's ruling Monday.

U.S. District Judge David G. Campbell ruled that Sheriff Joe Arpaio's deputies had no reason to stop Julian and Julio Mora before dawn on Feb. 11, 2009, nor any reason to make a warrantless arrest when deputies detained the Moras for nearly three hours.

The only reason the arresting deputies had to detain the men, according to Campbell's ruling, was because Julian Mora told deputies that he worked at Handyman Maintenance Inc., where sheriff's deputies were searching for suspected identity thieves.

Solorza was arrested in 2009 after he showed up at a San Mateo County home on a child's bike and wearing a clown suit, wig, and pirate hat.

I've seen this movie, they might want to check his basement.

At least 6 Americans killed in 'gunfight,' Afghan official says

Kabul, Afghanistan (CNN) -- At least six American service members died in a "gunfight" Wednesday at an airport in the Afghan capital, an Afghan military official told CNN.

"A 50-year-old man opened fire at armed U.S. military soldiers inside the airport after an argument between them turned serious," said Col. Baha Dur, chief of the public relations for the Afghan National Army at Kabul military airport.

The Afghan Defense Ministry said the incident, which occurred inside the Afghan national army base, stems from an argument between an Afghan pilot and an international colleague.

"Gunfire was opened and people were killed and injured," a ministry spokesman said in a statement.

NATO said the confrontation took place at 10:25 a.m. at North Kabul International Airport, where a quick reaction force responded to a "small arms fire incident."

It confirmed the deaths of six International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) troops, but it did not disclose their nationalities.

The North Kabul International Airport is home to NATO Air Training Command Afghanistan.

An ISAF spokesman said the incident was "still ongoing."

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the incident, saying a man named Azizullah was responsible.

"One suicide attacker ... managed to attack an Afghan military unit and has managed to kill many Afghan and international soldiers," said Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid.

The Taliban said the man killed nine foreigners and five Afghans before being killed by the Afghan army.

NATO denied the Taliban claim.

$100,000 settlement ends lawsuit spurred by drug raid in Middletown
[Link: www.pennlive.com...]

A woman who claimed she was abused and defamed during a May 2008 drug raid in Middletown has reached a $100,000 settlement of a federal lawsuit in the case, her lawyer said today.

Deana Perry claimed in her suit that borough police and officers of the Dauphin County Drug Task Force rifled through nude photos of her they found during the raid and propped one on a window sill for passers-by to see.

Also, Perry claimed her rights were violated and she was defamed when an officer slapped a bumper sticker on her home that read "Say No To Drugs: Busted - Middletown Police Department." Drug possession charges against Perry were dropped after her husband admitted that drugs found in the home were his.
....
The borough's lawyer, David MacMain, said the settlement involved no admission of wrongdoing by the borough or the drug task force. The decision to settle was a financial call made by the insurers, he said.

yep... and it is also a testament to Sony's disaster planning... NIL Network security is not that hard. The problem usually ends up being management not allowing what needs to be done due to costs that they think are not worth it.

That is a common story...

For what it's worth, I think Sony's going to take a huge hit here because of the delay in announcing the problem. I mean sure, a week down was making users angry. Then to discover it was down because Sony had put it down due to being hacked, and had waited that long to tell?

I'm guessing that of the ~77 million users, over half had used a credit card at least once.

Worse, however, is that it's not just credit cards. The files also had usernames, passwords, real names, addresses, and anything else in the "personal" and "registration" databases.

How many people do you know who use the same username/password combination? How often is date of birth the security question? (Those were rhetorical questions. The answer to both is "lots".)

Sony's going to be very interesting for a while.

Good Morning from SoCal,
I have missed my usual time at LGF. Been busy. Virus attack.
I wanted to share a tech tip-Mcafee Gold Support for their Virusscan Enterprise is awesome. One station caught a fake alert virus that had thwarted up to the second virus definitions, beat a command level scan twice. Mcafee was allowed into the computer via remote connection, grabbed a sample of the virus and sent me a custom made fix that I'll try later today.

I could just wipe this drive but I'm impressed with the "never say die" attitude at gold support. Plus I'm learning a lot as I work with them on the fix.

Look out for vstaskmgr.exe

They tell me it's a system killer that hijacks profiles and shuts down task manager. Comes from popups that can only be beat by closing the browser. Hitting the red x in the popup launches the attack.

That's one possibility, but this overshadows a far more important news event from the WH today - that they're reshuffling the DoD and CIA posts. Panetta is moving to the Pentagon, and Gen. Petraeus is going to the CIA as Defense Secretary Gates will be stepping down. That's on top of the end of the term of the JCS.

Huh. I didn't think there was a legal route for him to obtain a copy.

What's going to be really funny is the division of the birthers now.

Some of them, the slightly sane, will be griping about how he should have done this long ago-- as though there was actually any reason for him to do so, as if there was actually any doubt. There was none, they were always fucking morons for doubting it. This certificate proves what Obama has always said; what he had previously released was accurate and true and everyone should have been satisfied with it.

More of them, I'm guessing, are going to claim it's a fraud.

How embarrassing for the GOP.

I was thinking something along the lines of "Screw you guys, I'm going home (pointing back to the White House)". I probably wouldn't be nearly as diplomatic as the President (and his presser) would be on the subject. I would lay into the GOP and the idiocy over his citizenship pretty harshly. I'd let the GOP leadership have it about their cowardice to stand up against the birthers and the idiocy that they're cultivating. Then again, I'd also state that the reason the GOP leadership isn't doing that is because they'd be alienating their base.

But that's just me.

Don't know if it has been posted here, but Obama has released his "Long-form" birth certificate. Picture is on the link.

After years of speculation and conspiracy theories, the White House has released President Obama’s “long form” birth certificate, clearly stating that he was born in Honolulu, Hawaii on August 4, 1961. View the document below. Obama is expected to address the matter at 9:45 a.m. ET.

Trump is "very proud" that he managed to "force" the President to release his birth certificate and now we can focus on more substantive issues - like getting his college records.

But then again, I think the President is going to relish the opportunity to lay into these idiots spreading the birther nonsense - and especially into Trump (whether he's a stalking horse or not) - by noting that while Obama can release his birth certificate, nothing can release the stench of having his name on a casino operation that has had to declare bankruptcy 3 separate times.

Heh. No. It helps the GOP possibly regain the sanity of the party. If they actually seize the opportunity.

I'm doubting that will work. I'm seeing the failure of the right wing to respond to this with anything approaching rationality, dignity, or sense, as I read the righty blogs.

He spent millions of dollars fighting the release of certain documents!! Why???????????? U liberals are so twisted amd naive and blind that if america ever gets destroyed it will be because of u.

for anyone who cares, this is NOT a Birth Certificate. A Birth Certificate must be signed by the doctor delivering the baby. What I do not understand is that if Dunham hadn’t lived the prescribed time in the US prior to his birth, & the father is not a US citizen, then how is it BO is a natural born citizen?
Bcs from what I understand, that is how Chester Arthur got outed here after all these years for.
Just bcs the mother was a US citizen does NOT make BO a natural born citizen. I was to understand BOTH of his parents needed to be that AND live in the US for a certain prescribed time before the birth of the child.
It was never really an issue to me that he wasn’t born in HI.

A) Now release everything else, because even though it was obviously pointless to release this and we should be embarrassed at demanding it, we're not.

B) It's a fraud.

C) The issue was never the birth certificate, it's that his father was foreign and so he's not a natural born citizen, because of random things various people said that I'm interpreting as I prefer to.

It's legal here in this country. I don't think provinces get to tinker with them. Oddly enough, I don't keep track of French news even though I live here since almost a year. I still only mostly read American/British news sites.

One must consider that our government has people who every single day create documents that allow agents to be someone whom they are not and that these docs are good enough that highly trained counter intelligence people in foreign governments are not able to detect them as false.

So what are the chances that this birth certificate is not the real thing?

I have no idea, but it is a valid question considering what is at stake.

What’s Zero’s father’s nationality? Isn’t that the important thing??

How many versions of his REAL birth certificate have we seen now...three or four? And it still does not make him a “natural born citizen” because if his father was Obama Sr., he was never a citizen of the USA. This should be the point of discussion questioning his eligibility for POTUS.

No. The question now is (if this thing is legit) why is someone born to a Kenyan father a natural born citizen?

571 Obdicut  Wed, Apr 27, 2011 7:13:54am

If the birthers bothered to read wikipedia, they'd see they were wrong about natural born citizenship, but they won't, of course.

Maybe Obama should print out the wiki article, or just the court judgement, and read it to them.

And the constitution itself contains a direct recognition of the subsisting common law principle, in the section which defines the qualification of the President. "No person except a natural born citizen, or a citizen of the United States at the time of the adoption of this constitution, shall be eligible to the office of President," &c . The only standard which then existed, of a natural born citizen, was the rule of the common law, and no different standard has been adopted since. Suppose a person should be elected President who was native born, but of alien parents, could there be any reasonable doubt that he was eligible under the constitution? I think not. The position would be decisive in his favor that by the rule of the common law, in force when the constitution was adopted, he is a citizen.

That's from Lynch v. Clarke, and it was cited by the Supreme Court.

Here's a good hoosier story:

Speedway man gets his long-awaited face transplant
[Link: www.indystar.com...]

"He's very excited he's a pioneer," said his sister, Morgan Hunter, in a video posted on the transplant hospital's website. "He likes that."

Of course, it's not a role he sought. But fate and a heroic act, when the fresh-faced 21-year-old had just finished an Army stint, led him to make medical history earlier this month when he became only the second person in the U.S. to receive a full-face transplant at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston.

The recent death of an anonymous male donor made the transplant possible for Hunter, whose face had been severely disfigured by 10,000 volts of electricity in a 2001 accident when he saved a female passenger from a live wire after their pickup truck hit a utility pole.
....
However, it's been a long and difficult road. Within the past 10 years, he had 47 skin graft and other operations on his burned face. He also lost his left leg below the knee, and now wears a prosthesis, and lost two fingers on his right hand.

The most telling thing about Obama's birth cert is that he was content to waste millions of $ to stop its release, for no reason.

Wrong. He was more than content for others to spend millions on trying to find something that should never have been at issue to begin with. Hawaii was forced to deal with idiots snooping around hoping to dig up dirt that simply wasn't there.
