Obama Releases ‘Long Form’ Birth Certificate, Right Wing Unrepentant

One of the most disgraceful episodes in American politics
Politics • Views: 44,323

OK, here it is, you racist Birther morons: President Obama’s Long Form Birth Certificate.

The right wing whining will now reach a fever pitch, and World Net Daily will soon come out with “proof” that it’s a forgery.

Without even a trace of irony, Donald Trump is very proud of himself.

And hate-filled bigot Pamela Geller, one of the main proponents of this asinine nonsense, has only this to say: WHAT TOOK SO LONG?

Today Obama announced he would finally release the long of his birth certifcate. As Obama continues to toy and taunt the American people, you have to scratch your head and say, what took so long?

Not a single word about the fact that she was totally, 100% WRONG, with her endless “proofs” that the “short form” was a fake. She just moves right along to the next stupid talking point.

Can you tell how completely disgusted I am that it came to this? The right wing has discredited itself utterly. Good work, idiots.

Since it seems like a lot of the birthers have now moved on to the "Natural born" bit, let's nip that in the bud:

And the constitution itself contains a direct recognition of the subsisting common law principle, in the section which defines the qualification of the President. "No person except a natural born citizen, or a citizen of the United States at the time of the adoption of this constitution, shall be eligible to the office of President," The only standard which then existed, of a natural born citizen, was the rule of the common law, and no different standard has been adopted since. Suppose a person should be elected President who was native born, but of alien parents, could there be any reasonable doubt that he was eligible under the constitution? I think not. The position would be decisive in his favor that by the rule of the common law, in force when the constitution was adopted, he is a citizen.

That's from Lynch v. Clarke, and it was cited by the Supreme Court.

From FB...

Please ignore all claims by the Central Government that Barry's certificate is "real." It's not. I know. You see, I have a political satire jingle to release later in the year, and the lyrics won't make sense if the certificate is now produced. So, it's not real. Not yet. Not till after my jingle, thank you. hehe ;-)

Dunno what to make of it...

I saw the story on Yahoo this morning and the wing-nuts were already in denial calling it a fake and saying it took so long because it was hard to create a good forgery. That along with the usual "what took so long?" nonsense.

I was thinking the same thing. Here we have it up in the news, we have birther laws in various states, we have donald trump out there making an ass of himself (what else is new?). Everyone was getting all worked up and the press was falling for it then boom, he releases the birth certificate and it takes the wind out of everyone's sails (and makes them all look like idiots). Sadly it won't be enough for the real idiots.

Eric Boehlert at Media Matters:
How Fox Teamed Up with Trump For Birtherpalooza

Last week on The O’Reilly Factor, host Bill O’Reilly, who claims to not buy the birther conspiracy, was yet again hosting yet another discussion about the birther conspiracy. On the show, Fox News analyst Andrea Tantaros encouraged Trump’s ascendancy. Not because she necessarily believed it or even thought it was true, but because it was good fodder for the politics of personal destruction [emphasis added]:

"Let the man speak. He's got a bigger megaphone than Romney, Pawlenty, Gingrich, than all of them combined. And you know what; he can drive up Obama's negatives more than any of the other of those GOP candidates."

26 elizajane  Wed, Apr 27, 2011 8:14:31am

Birtherism is so yesterday. Now we're on to, "prove to us that you weren't an affirmative action admit at Harvard, boy!" After all, as Trump says, lots of his rich white friends can't get their kids in there. So how did a black boy from Hawaii (or wherever...) manage it?

I will not deign to link to this but somebody blogging as Ace of Spades has a long post up, linking to many other posts, proving that Obama didn't deserve to be at Harvard, or to graduate magna cum laude, and that his IQ is actually only 116. Which is plenty for a n**** boy.

It's all grossly humiliating for Obama, and for every African American, and the entire Republican party should be ashamed of itself.

Now granted, this is also the same person who refers to the Park 51 Islamic Community Center as a 'Super-Mosque, like a Super-Walmart' (again, her own words).

But this is the trend that is infesting Zionist groups here in the Bay Area. Otherwise liberal and left-leaning Zionists are adopting right-wing talking points as gospel truth.

The right wingers are settling on their talking points. The hard core loons will continue ranting that the BC is a fake, while the majority will simply declare themselves the victors for "forcing" Obama to show his certificate.

That's right. They're spinning an utterly humiliating, degrading defeat that makes them look like deranged racists ... as a victory.

I really, really wish there was someone in the actual media, as opposed to the comedo-journos at Comedy Central, with the balls to staple this lie to the foreheard of anyone who tries to declare this a "victory".

Instapundit's spin...

The White House may think it’s sprung a trap, but I think they waited too long. By now — as the polls from earlier this week showing how many independents thought Obama wasn’t born here, and which probably prompted the release decision, indicate — the damage is done. Even if people change their minds on the issue, for many the residual suspicion will remain: The thought that regardless of where he was born, there’s something shady about him.

Plus, from the comments: “Media: admit it, Trump forced the issue. Now, don’t let the WH distract you w/the birth crt from what Bernanke says today. Stay focused.” It’s more about the gas prices and the milk. Media spin won’t change those.

I think the peak was this week when Michael Steele said he didn't have a problem with birthers being in the party. Two years ago Obama could have slapped down WND and Pam Gellar with this release. Big deal. By waiting, he induced Trump, a large element of Fox News and, most importantly, a big part of the party base to join the pending train wreck with them. People who see politics as some kind of 'sport' just don't get that. They see everything as 'my side vs the other side'. I don't want to 'beat the other side'. I just want someone non-crazy, non-stupid, non-evil running things. That's all. I'm an Obama supporter from '08 but I'd be happy with an Eisenhower-type Republican in the White House. (Of course, some would argue we have that now.)

Then there are those who see party loyalty as their meal ticket. Patronage has pushed a whole generation of people into marching lock-step with ideological positions they don't agre with for fear of losing their jobs.

If that doesn't make you gag enough, try Rinced Prius:

“As I’ve repeatedly stated, this issue is a distraction. ... The President ought to spend his time getting serious about repairing our economy, working with Republicans and focusing on the long term sustainability of Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security. Unfortunately his campaign politics and talk about birth certificates is distracting him from our number one priority – our economy.”

HIS campaign politics? My God, these people have some nerve. Also Eric Cantor:

"The White House shouldn’t engage political sideshows, particularly at a time when the challenges facing our country are so immense."

Excuse me while I puke.

That is the most maddening thing about it. The supposed adults, GOP, are just playing partisan BS with this. They themselves should be called to take for not decisively calling out birtherism for what it is, a 'distraction.' But when Obama releases the long form (which looks like and says the same thing as the certified copy), he's spending too much time and energy on unimportant things.

(well, actually his lawyers did, since he's already spent $2m defending it, Obama didn't lift a finger).

Insanity, the rabbit hole goes ever deeper.

Saw this awesome comment at another blog:

the birthers and tea party members know something you don't. That Obama was not born in the us as a matter of fact. they all traveled back in time to that exact date and saw his birth in Kenya. They did that with a time machine that Spock MaCoy and Captain Kirk encountered on Stardate 3134.0:. I know this machine is real since I saw it on Star Trek The City on the Edge of Forever.

If two yiddin during the 1960's (spock and Kirk) could travel back in time why not the birthers of today?

However, the birthers are afraid that people would think they are crazy. And would not believe them that they time traveled and saw the actual birth.

Therefore, they need to come up with some other reason to convince the public of the truth.

Finally I a birthers has told the real truth of how we know thruth of Obama kenya birth.
PS I also went back in time and know know Rabbi Yossi the Galilean was correct there where 50 plagues on the sea.

OK, this whole thing has now started to make me feel more than just vaguely ill. I don't want to see an election between a Democrat and a Racist Fuck. What good does that do democracy in this country? In a time where our cup of real, serious issues runneth over, why are we having crypto-racist discussions about origin and birth? Ron Paul is going to determine the substantive debate by promising to abolish the Fed and return to the gold standard. What the hell is going on!

As a person in another country, it seems to me that a good portion of the US citizenry is not handling the country's change in status well. They long for the days when the US was 'the indispensable nation'. Those days are long gone and won't becoming back.

Other nations are catching up in both wealth and technical know how. The US itself has made the classic mistake of changing its source of wealth creation from manufacturing to finance, a change that has always resulted in a loss of power.

But rather than facing these facts and dealing with them, they are looking for scapegoats, and Obama is the biggest at the moment.

Until the US deals with its problems rather than long for days not returning, it's going to have problems with its political process.

Tuberville link

Texas Tech coach Tommy Tuberville appeared on conservative commentator Sean Hannity’s television show Tuesday, taking part in a panel discussion about President Obama’s Easter Sunday pastor, the controversy over his birth location and who might run against him in 2012.

Tuberville suggested that the president has a good chance to be unseated by whoever opposes him.

Asked by Hannity if there is anyone he likes for president, Tuberville said, “It really doesn’t make any difference. If the economy doesn’t get better, if the price of gas is six or seven dollars a gallon, if we’re still in wars, anybody’s going to run and win. Bottom line, we can’t keep going the direction we’re going.”

Tuberville was the day’s celebrity guest on “The Great American Panel” segment, joining in with former Maryland Gov. Robert Ehrlich and FOX News legal analyst Tamara Holder in a discussion moderated by Hannity.

I see your point. Agreed, there is a great deal of "transference" in the political debate here. Many are unwilling to face the real issues, so are happy to be distracted by being spoon-fed Birther nonsense. But sound and productive political debate pre-date the emergence of the US as a superpower. It is my conviction that the political system itself needs overhauling in order to be accessible by ordinary citizens. When the electoral system was established, only land owning white males could vote, and the country was a barely contiguous, intermittently settled frontier nation. If certain folks did not believe that the Constitution was a holy document and the Founding Fathers inspired by the Divine Spirit, reform could be possible. As it is, the old system is perpetuated by those who benefit the most at the expense of those who cannot hope to change it. Goes hand-in-hand with denying women reproductive rights and claiming the President is an alien black African sekrit mooslim.

Much of the hatred that the far right has for liberals is racially based. Liberals are perceived to be people who favor policies that take money away from hard working white Americans and gives it to less deserving black and brown not real Americans. Even the disdain for liberals has a racial history. Black conservatives are OK only because they are perceived as not wanting to take away anything from white people to give to black people who they often do not show any real affinity or connection to.

I, personally, feel that this action by Obama was a mistake. It's not going to change the minds of anyone who has already convinced themselves (Or at least claims as such) that he's not qualified to serve, it doesn't change anything for the people that already were keeping their head out of their ass, and anyone that had been vulnerable to a seed of doubt being planted will probably still retain it.

If anything, I'm afraid this might make things worse. It sort of undermines the whole previous reason for it not being released because he couldn't, since now he has. It will be taken as a sign of weakness, that he gave in and released it. Clearly, the birthers will say, this only proves there's something even bigger he's trying to keep from getting out. And then you have those on the right who have been quoted above making absolutely ridiculous remarks on how Obama shouldn't be 'playing politics right now' and should 'focus on his job'.

I just see very little upside to this action and a lot of potential downsides. At the very least, it gives a symbolic victory to the rabid racists and far right wackos that will only encourage this sort of stupidity in the future. And no, I don't trust the American people to see how crazy things are and turn against them. It hasn't happened yet, so I see no reason that would change due to this.

Here’s Joseph Farah:

We look forward to reviewing it like so many other Americans do at this late date. But it is important to remember there are still dozens of other questions concerning this question of eligibility that need to be resolved to assure what has become a very skeptical public concerning Barack Obama’s parentage, his adoption, his citizenship status throughout his life and why he continues to cultivate a culture of secrecy around his life.

Farah is also not willing to concede that the long-form birth certificate is genuine. He writes: “The news media and the political establishment were quick to rush to judgment regarding Obama’s eligibility in 2008, without any basis. It would be a big mistake for everyone to jump to a conclusion now based on the release of this document, which raises as many questions than it answers.”

re: #234 Simply Sarah

Agreed. I have no faith in this country's ability to see through bullshit anymore. We are in decline because we are just too willfully ignorant and divided. I don't know if the birthers won anything, but I know Obama didn't either. Racists are never satisfied and he should know better. If anything the MSM will run with blaming him for the controversy in the first place. The majority of the country has very little ability to see through rightwing lies and the MSM has no interest in calling them on their lies about anything. Like I said, I don't know why Obama at this point wants a second term. He has his place in history and he should go back home to Chicago and enjoy the rest of this life. He is too smart and apparently too black to govern a country that is this stuck on stupid and racism. Or maybe I'm just being selfish because I'm tired of worrying about him and his family and being pissed off about how he's being treated. I know a lot of other people who feel the same way.

It may be true that the mainstream coverage is the main concern and reason for this, since the legitimate organizations have been busy trying to be "neutral" and haven't been nearly strong enough in condemning this, while Fox & friends have been their normal selves. If it results in flushing it out with the next news cycle, it may indeed be successful. I just fear that it will only add to the focus (Or the goalposts will just effortlessly glide elsewhere).

283 Sheila Broflovski  Wed, Apr 27, 2011 10:24:24am

OK I think I have found the distinction between "natural born" and "native born."

"Native born" = born within the borders of the U.S. This also includes any U.S. military bases abroad.

"Natural born" = born abroad to one parent who is a U.S. citizen, who has spent 7 consecutive years in the U.S.

2 of my children and 13 of my grandchildren are "Natural born." U.S. embassies can be very pissy about the documents that they require in order to register a "Natural born" citizen. Birth certificates of "Natural born" citizens are issued by the U.S. Dept. of State who then take the foreign birth certificate and keep it.

284 Winny Spencer  Wed, Apr 27, 2011 10:24:30am

Obama gets the net, at least, his campaign sure does. When this crazy smear was confined to the internet he wasn't too worried, I bet, because Organising for America types are all over the internet. The DNC owned the internet during the 2008 cycle. But the GOP has hamfistedly tried to make up that internet ground (even with the massive Fail of their website). Obama realises that there's a segment of voters out there who are increasingly hearing nothing but crazy from Fox et al and the GOP for all their failings will be using the internet more in 2012. I understand where you are coming from and the term that I have been trying to use is that these people are willfully ignorant. They are not people who simply don't know something by chance (we are all ignorant about lots of things) they are people who have chosen to not know something. They are ignorant by choice. They respond to new knowledge and facts like most people would respond to a grizzly bear in their backyard: fight or flight. Facts literally threaten them. It would be nice if we could just point and laugh, but their ability to influence people who should know better and dominate our attempts at adult conversation with their childishness is no laughing matter. There is a significant portion of the country that is both bigoted and lacking in critical thinking skills and I quite frankly am in despair over it. I though having an truly smart president whether or not I or anyone else agreed with him all of the time would help a little but, but it seems as if it's actually made if worse. It's not his fault at all, but he hasn't had any help in elevating our discourse. We are either too far gone or not far enough along.

304 onyx  Wed, Apr 27, 2011 10:48:55am

I take the President at his word that the image he released is actually a faithful representation of a certified copy of his birth certificate. Of course, none of us have actually seen and held a certified copy of his birth certificate, let alone the birth certificate itself. Perhaps the simplest thing would be for the State of Hawaii to mail the physical certificate to Real American #1, who will check it over and make sure it "checks out beautifully". He will then mail it to Real American #2, and so on. (You can leave me off the list to save time, since as I've said, Obama's word is good enough for me.) Assuming a day for verification and two days for the mail (and assuming no new Real Americans show up in the meantime), Hawaii will get the certificate back in less than three million years. Frankly, this is such a simple plan that the fact that Obama hasn't enacted it already is extremely suspicious.

Talking of "representation", this reminds me of a discussion with some Egyptian lawyers years ago who were looking at the software contract for some IBM mainframe system software that their client was installing.

They aren't actually the same documents, and I have both of them in front of me. My "birth certificate", a two-sided document, was issued by the hospital, and my "certificate of live birth" was issued by the Board of Health in the state where I was born. I believe obtained the second document to get my first passport (a long time ago). The two documents contain different (but not conflicting) information. It's actually interesting to examine your documents if you have both of them.

For example, my birth certificate is signed by the Attending Physician and the hospital Administrator. My certificate of live birth is signed by the Attending Physician and the Registrar of that State's Board of Health. My BC includes the actual day of the week I was born, while the other document does not.

The birth certificate also contains left/right footprints, as well as the left/right thumbprints of my mother. It doesn't bear the signatures of either of my parents. Both documents list my mother's maiden name, even though my parents were married. The "certificate of live birth" contains my mother's signature but not my father's.

I also noticed that, although I was born on May 10, the "certificate of live birth" was received by the State's Board of Health on May 19, but was not filed until June 7.

The wingnutters are ranting about "natural born" being somehow different and more better than "native born" and requires BOTH parents to be U.S. citizens of a child born on U.S. soil. I think this is pure bullshit, whose ass did they pull this meme from?

Googling the the two terms just brought up a bunch of wingnut sites echoing each other.

As I understand it there are only two ways to become an American citizen. You need to be born here (or on a military or embassy property that is considered US soil) or be naturalilzed. There is no such thing as native born. They are pulling that phrase out of their collective asses.

In my current state of exuberance, I almost overlooked the fact that committed (also in a mental institution sense) birthers will still claim that Obama isn't natural born because his father was a foreign citizen at the time of Obama's birth.

Just ask them which part of the constitution or any supreme court cases that make that a true statement.

They (Obama/white house) shouldn't have done this. It's a non-issue 5 ways to Sunday. Nobody else in the history of the U.S. has ever been required to do this, so Obama shouldn't have had to, either.

But instead of ignoring the trolls, they have now fed them, thus ensuring this idiotic controversy will continue to survive.

Now for the real question; how did this unnamed source know the certificate wasn't in the file? Did he break in?

The GOP will probably try to pretend they weren't birther curious, and firing up the wayback machine to present a nice montage of Palin, Bachmann, even Huckabee, as well as other congressmen and Senators making comments giving credence to the birther would be a nice reminder of what they used to be/still are.

350 S'latch  Wed, Apr 27, 2011 6:48:05pm

Previously, speculation about why Barack Obama was not releasing the long form of his birth certificate led to a theory that the Obama administration liked the “birther debate” because it put Republicans in a difficult position. When people like Speaker Boehner were asked if the birther theory is crazy, they would risk losing their base if they said “yes” but risk discrediting themselves if they said “no.” So, the birther debate forced people like Boehner to discredit themselves. I cannot think of another reason why they might have held on to this for so long. Also, it worked well. And, they probably should have kept doing it.

351 S'latch  Wed, Apr 27, 2011 7:09:56pm

On the other hand, we probably should all take a deep breath and wait until Donald Trump has a chance to examine this purported birth certificate to see if it is real and to confirm that it checks out.

352 samgak  Wed, Apr 27, 2011 10:58:29pm

That NRO link is correct about the "layers" resulting from automatic processing of the image after a scan (and NOT being the result of fakery), but there is no OCR-generated text in the document. It's all bitmaps. Mentioning OCR is just introducing confusion.

What I find deeply disturbing is that for over 2+ years this whole Birther business has churned on and on, and the Obama administration didn't shut it down until "The Donald" pushed the issue. So what happens, the megalomaniac gets his way and Obama feels that he has t show his long form birth certificate and Donald gets the credit. I am not sure which is worse, legitimizing Donald Trump as a possible candidate, or wondering why the Obama administration didn't just show them the long form birth certificate to begin with, which just makes team Obama look like they are playing political games to make the right look stupid. Sadly, it seems to me that they did more damage to themselves.

The issue was put to bed a long time ago. He showed his birth certificate in 2008. Why are you ignoring that?

We are the folks who put him into office. Like it or not, delaying showing his birth certificate, didn't look like he was being on the up and up.

372 Obdicut  Fri, Apr 29, 2011 9:39:47am

re: #371 perrie

Liar is not much of a personal attack. It's more of a description of your actual actions: such as claiming he delayed releasing his birth certificate. His birth certificate has been available since 2008.

Yes, I know birthers like you became fixiated on the long form for some damn reason or another. It was rather deranged.

Give one, simply one, any actual reasonable reason to believe Obama wasn't born in Hawaii. Just one reason to think it. Anything that makes the remotest piece of sense, please. Something that a 'reasonable' person would give.

Why would an American woman travel to Kenya to have a child and then hurriedly create a conspiracy to make it appear as though she hadn't done so?

If the goal was to have him be a US citizen, why wouldn't she just stay in Hawaii?

Please make sure you keep that in mind.
