Republicans Bravely Don’t Renounce the Birther Bunch

Still triangulating
Wingnuts • Views: 33,581

Top Republicans are covering themselves in glory today, courageously standing up to the Birthers and telling them to knock it off once and for all.

Had you going there, didn’t I?

In reality: Republicans punt on birth certificate, continue embarrassing the country.

Sarah Palin:

Media: admit it, Trump forced the issue. Now, don’t let the WH distract you w/the birth crt from what Bernanke says today. Stay focused, eh?

The Republican National Committee:

Obama’s release of his birth cert. is a nice, but temporary distraction for him from high gas prices & a terrible economy

Mitt Romney:

What President Obama should really be releasing is a jobs plan

Newt Gingrich:

“All I would say is, why did it take so long?” Gingrich said. “The whole thing is strange.”

Politico's Arena has reactions from some of the federal Birther Bill (H.R. 1503) co-sponsers. They basically follow the same pattern, which can probably best be summed up as "blame the victim":

[Link: www.politico.com...]

Rep. Trent Franks
Congressman (R-Ariz.) :

In the earliest days of this controversy, prior to Barack Obama being sworn in as president, I announced on the record that my office had concluded, based on hospital record evidence published in newspaper articles at the time, that Mr. Obama was indeed born in Hawaii.

While I never understood Mr. Obama's decision to allow the issue to go unaddressed and therefore distract the nation as it has for so long, I remain convinced that the president was born in Hawaii. My goal in supporting legislation such as H.R. 1503 is to prevent such controversy and distraction in future elections.

---

Rep. John Carter
Congressman (R-Texas) :

Congressman Carter is glad to see the issue finally resolved, but disappointed that the president took this long to do so. This could and should have been done when the question was first raised.

Idiots, he resolved the issue in 2008.

Gasoline prices are a visceral issue to a lot of Americans, and the less they understand of the nature of our national energy policy and energy industry, the more it comes out as a conditioned, emotional reflex. Trump knows that he can play on that, just as he played on the birther thing.

Yea I was just reading on the Daily Beast about how Obama "caved" and "blinked". These people are hilarious in their utter belief that our President is scared and/or stupid.

Anyone who thinks Obama put out a birth certificate because of Donald Trump or any other bucket head demands has been completely bamboozled. The gut shot he just put into all these whacko nutjobs (read.. majority of the Republican party and their base) just as they reached a fever pitch frenzy was spectacular.

Yea right, Obama's a naive political virgin who got bullied by Donald Trump. Please keep believing it while he scares off every serious presidential contender the Right can muster.

This is a game Obama cannot win

In a statement after Obama spoke, Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus called the issue a distraction — and yet blamed Obama for playing campaign politics by addressing it.

"The president ought to spend his time getting serious about repairing our economy," Priebus said. "Unfortunately his campaign politics and talk about birth certificates is distracting him from our number one priority — our economy."

Not addressing it: a distraction.
Addressing it: also a distraction.

“I think it will take us a little while to examine this and determine if it’s legitimate,” he said about the birth certificate, which was released by the White House along with a letter from the director of Hawaii’s Health Department certifying its legitimacy.

Even if it is authentic, Farah said the real issue is that Obama is still not eligible to be president because his father was Kenyan and his adopted father was Indonesian, making him a potential “dual citizen” of two separate foreign countries. (Farah supplied no evidence to support his contention that Obama ever held “dual citizenship.” Nor did he explain why it would make any difference, given Obama’s birth to an American mother on U.S. soil, which would meet the U.S. Constitution’s requirement that he be a “natural-born citizen.”)

“I know for some people this settles the issue,” Farah said of the birth certificate. “It’s up to us to persuade people that there’s a lot more to this issue than the Hawaiian birth.”

My sister-in-law had dual citizenship at birth because she was born in Okinawa where my fil was stationed with the air force. My in-laws had to renounce the other citizenship because there was potential draft issues, and also, why would she need it?

In other words, hundreds of children born to American military families would have had dual citizenship at birth. Is WND suggesting that none of those kids are eligible?

re: #85 ralphieboy

That is the "Higher Truth" behind the Doctrine of True Birtherism: that Obama is not morally eligible to lead our nation.

From the NRO comments:

Come on folks. The problem is not that Obama wasn't born in the USA, it's that he doesn't seem to have allegiance to what many of us call American principles, or even the American people. That, the the simple fact that many of us who approve of policies to negate the residual effects of slavery and Jim Crow know that Obama, and his family for all generations, were never subjected to it. And finally, there is the problem of Obama's contempt for the question, indirectly indicating contempt for the people.

They spend two freaking years barking and barking about the birth certificate, and now that Obama releases it, it's a distraction.

These people have no shame.

I think it very telling that Obama's SSN is in Arabic numbers.

We should switch over to Roman numerals right now. We can call them Freedom Numbers.

re: #90 EmmmieG

The issue is that he's black and had an African father. They need to just say it.

Only if they're black Democrats.

I had a feeling this smackdown on Birther Nation would come one day. Kind of sad that it came to this but at least maybe now we can move on. But I doubt it.

In the mind of a conspiracy nut, any information that seems to undermine the conspiracy theory is immediately suspect and it shows just how far the conspirators are willing to go in order to conceal the conceal the truth.

SO I get why Obama came out and released the certificate, but I don't think it will convince the Birthers to finally shut up.

I'm not surprised that Gov. Blood Libel is saying the White House is trying to use this as a distraction, even though she has said a number of times that the birth certificate is a legitimate issue and praised Trump for pursuing it.

The RNC should be smacked down hard for allowing their congressional members and state legislators to introduce and actually pass "birther bills," and pander to these kooks in other ways.

Gingrich is a turdball no matter what he does.

As far as Romney is concerned, I actually don't have a problem with what he's said here because he's stayed out of this nuttery.

re: #69 jaunte

I think Elizabeth Kubler-Ross broke them down into denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. The birthers appear to have reached 'bargaining.'

No way. Greater Wingnuttia has been wildly swinging back and forth between denial and anger ever since Nov 2008. (Earlier really-- when I used to check in here during summer of 2008, the denial was so strong I couldn't read the comment threads).

God knows how many years it will take for them to get to bargaining.

"Layers" is easy: Start with a deep foundation layer of Stupid. Coat on a generous layer of racism. Then coat it all with a good stratum of gullibility, and Presto! you've decorated a Birfday Cake.
