Top Climate Scientist on Tornadoes: ‘Irresponsible Not to Mention Climate Change’

‘Climate change is present in every single meteorological event’ - Michael Mann
Environment • Views: 40,350

In the opinion of top climate scientist Dr. Kevin Trenberth, it’s “irresponsible not to mention climate change” in the context of the killer tornadoes this week in the South.

It is irresponsible not to mention climate change. … The environment in which all of these storms and the tornadoes are occurring has changed from human influences (global warming). Tornadoes come from thunderstorms in a wind shear environment. This occurs east of the Rockies more than anywhere else in the world. The wind shear is from southerly (SE, S or SW) flow from the Gulf overlaid by westerlies aloft that have come over the Rockies. That wind shear can be converted to rotation. The basic driver of thunderstorms is the instability in the atmosphere: warm moist air at low levels with drier air aloft. With global warming the low level air is warm and moister and there is more energy available to fuel all of these storms and increase the buoyancy of the air so that thunderstorms are strong. There is no clear research on changes in shear related to global warming. On average the low level air is 1 deg F and 4 percent moister than in the 1970s.

The problem is that you’re playing right into the deniers’ hands. When you say “bad weather X is related to global warming” despite an absence of any clear evidence saying so (just hand-wavy arguments, at best), they respond with “Hey, you blame everything on global warming!”

So what we learn is to not just build a “green” house, but a strong one as well. Insurance companies and FEMA need to be be strict about re settling people further away from flood zones, insist on “safe room” or strongroom basements in all housing developments in tornado prone areas, and much more. Building codes need to escalate along with the weather.
Climate change is going to change civilization a great deal. It may well do more to reduce the problem than we as humans do.

It’s not climate, it’s god:

Except that this is just their misunderstanding of how science works. Nothing is ever 100% certain. It is merely accepted as the best explanation of the available data until a better explanation comes along or new data invalidates the current one.

They aren’t saying AGW caused this tornado outbreak. They are saying that AGW will likely result in increased frequency and intensity of storms - like this outbreak. Glossing over that fact doesn’t do anyone a favor.

Khamis has been dead for a while I think. Remember the alleged Kamikaze bombing earlier? We haven’t heard or seen him since. Rumors of his death started around that time.

I found an interesting excerpt from an article in a privately held Egyptian News Paper (Al-Masry Al-Youm). The article was about the Salafis running for election in Egypt.

On Monday, prominent Islamic scholar Youssef al-Qaradawi leveled severe criticism at Egypt’s Salafi movement, describing its thinking as both stagnant and extreme.

Al-Qaradawi, who heads the International Union of Muslim Scholars, blamed the rise of Salafis on the absence of a substantial role for the moderate Islamic institution Al-Azhar.

The radical groups are ripping at each other? I f***ing hate the Salafis.

It has been breathlessly reported in the press that nearly a third of the world’s population will watch Friday’s royal wedding between Prince William and Kate Middleton.

Presumably, the other two-thirds will be too busy dodging shrapnel, or searching for potable water, to watch the adorable couple exchange vows at Westminster Abbey. Hopefully, they’ll DVR it and watch later.

The estimate wild guess is apparently from Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt.

That’s the downside of being the guy with the most flexible vacation schedule in the family…. even if it was going to happen Sunday at 2:30 we still wouldn’t be able to see it and then make our plane flight out in time to be at work on Monday…

So barring some kind of beneficial act of G-d I won’t get to see the last manned spaceflight take off from inside the USA for the foreseeable future.

Glossing over that fact doesn’t do anyone a favor.

weather is not climate. pretending otherwise plays into the hands of deniers who like to point out warm winters and other things that have nothing to do with global warming. also, tornadoes.

Trenberth is a great scientist and a shitty evangelist. This tornado outbreak, per the NOAA, is a random unusual confluence of arctic air and warm gulf air, more related to el nino phenomena than anything else.

global warming is modeled to warm the poles more quickly than the equator. theoretically, that should result in bad flooding but less wind shear.

Trenberth knows this, and does science no favors for pretending otherwise. If we’re going to pretend, we might as well pretend there’s no global warming and save ourselves the trouble.

Nope. The science says that the poles will warm more frequently than the equator as AGW progresses. The science also says that such differentials are better predictors of storm intensity than overall global temps. Lack of such differentials, therefore, should not cause furor about future storm intensities.

If it were otherwise, you would find an increase in very strong hurricanes and very strong tornadoes in the past century correlated with the [quite real] increase in temperatures in the past century.

Should you find such a correlation, i recommend that you apply immediately for large funding, because i think you’d be the first.

Remember, it helps no one to hype global warming when solid evidence is lacking. We have enough trouble convincing the remaining doubters/deniers with the solid evidence we already possess. Making claims unsupported by the existing science only serves to make deniers think there’s some ‘agenda’ behind the scenes.

Well, it is either quit or be on O2 in about 2 yrs according to the Croaker.

Nothing like a quit or die option to convince you to change you ways.

Some people find these types of facts help…

In 20 minutes, your blood pressure and pulse rate decrease, and the body temperature of your hands and feet increase.
Carbon monoxide in cigarette smoke reduces the blood’s ability to carry oxygen.

At 8 hours, the carbon monoxide level in your blood decreases to normal. With the decrease in carbon monoxide, your blood oxygen level increases to normal.

At 24 hours, your risk of having a heart attack decreases.

At 48 hours, nerve endings start to regrow and the ability to smell and taste is enhanced.

Between 2 weeks and 3 months, your circulation improves, walking becomes easier and you don’t cough or wheeze as often. Phlegm production decreases. Within several months, you have significant improvement in lung function.

In 1 to 9 months, coughs, sinus congestion, fatigue and shortness of breath decrease as you continue to see significant improvement in lung function. Cilia, tiny hair-like structures that move mucus out of the lungs, regain normal function.

In 1 year, risk of coronary heart disease and heart attack is reduced to half that of a smoker.

Between 5 and 15 years after quitting, your risk of having a stroke returns to that of a non-smoker.

In 10 years, your risk of lung cancer drops. Additionally, your risk of cancer of the mouth, throat, esophagus, bladder, kidney and pancreas decrease. Even after a decade of not smoking however, your risk of lung cancer remains higher than in people who have never smoked. Your risk of ulcer also decreases.

In 15 years, your risk of coronary heart disease and heart attack in similar to that of people who have never smoked. The risk of death returns to nearly the level of a non-smoker.

Your body is already healthier than it was yesterday. Keep that going, don’t give up the improvements to your health you’ve already made.

We’ll see, my days in Columbus normally consist of running form one event to another till midnight and then collapsing into bed before once more rushing off to repeat the process come morning.

Also I’ll have to turn down the coke zero or similar offers, my drinking habbits are sort of weird in that I never really “got” carbonated drinks and don’t like them. I used to drink lots of gatorade cause I like the taste, and still do drink it or lemonade when I’m dinning out but when I’m at home I tend to get through the day drinking nothing but water with lots of ice in it.

If you put enough ice in water it has a “taste” of sorts and it saves a guy a around 200 calories a day the way I liked to pound down extra strong gatorade…)

that’s cool.

let me know if you think you might have a free evening, i’ll email you my cell#. otherwise, have a great time, and may i randomly say that your drinking habits sound eminently healthy and worth a random upding.

Eh, I prefer letting the rebels who have lost family and friends getting their hands on him. The US estimates that as much as .5% of the country has been killed in the fighting. That’s fairly deadly for a Civil War, though not nearly as bad as our own. Our Civil War was one of the worst demographically, with 1.5-2% of the population dead after it.

Not really, I don’t think. She’s not covering her hair, even when her face is ‘covered’, and the veil isn’t pulled forward. Also, that low neckline would give any traditionalist hives.

By Jewish standards, the veil is fine, since a girl at her wedding doesn’t need to cover her hair, but the neckline and the unlined sleeves would still bother the frum.

haha!

I loved it. I actually got up at 4 a.m. to watch it. I thought it was a lovely wedding. Kate is a breath of fresh air being breathed into that family, they need her.

And to answer someone else - why were women so fascinated by Diana? I think part of it was we watched her transform from a cute but bit frumpy shy girl, to an elegant self-confident woman, and it was an interesting transformation to watch.

I also think some of us felt a bit sorry for her - it seemed obvious to me that when she married Charles, she loved him madly, and he didn’t much care about her except for making the babies. It was a bit sad, watching her come to the realization she had been duped. She was only 19 or so, I think, when they got married. Way to young to know what she was getting into.

re: #168 Aceofwhat?

I really appreciate the snark. But if you really want to get into this lets start with:

nordhaus.econ.yale.edu/hurr_122106a.pdf

The major conclusions are the following: First, there appears to be an increase in
the frequency and intensity of tropical cyclones in the North Atlantic. Second,
there are substantial vulnerabilities to intense hurricanes in the Atlantic coastal
United States. Damages appear to rise with the eighth power of maximum wind
speed. Third, greenhouse warming is likely to lead to stronger hurricanes, but the
evidence on hurricane frequency is unclear. We estimate that the average annual
U.S. hurricane damages will increase by $8 billion at 2005 incomes (0.06 percent of
GDP) due to global warming.

Kind of like watching Cinderella find out he had only married her because she fit the shoe. He had a shoe, needed a fit, she would do, and he had already given away his heart to someone else and she didn’t know it.

The question they are actually considering is whether they should move to an oldest-child system instead of an oldest-son system.

Prince Charles is the oldest son and has only sons, so it would affect possibly the children of Prince William.

allow me to paraphrase. actually, paraphrasing is for the birds. i’ll quote.

We find that changes in local sea surface temperature are inadequate for characterizing even the sign of changes in potential intensity, but that long-term changes in potential intensity are closely related to the regional structure of warming; regions that warm more than the tropical average are characterized by increased potential intensity, and vice versa. We use this relationship to reconstruct changes in potential intensity over the twentieth century from observational reconstructions of sea surface temperature. We find that, even though tropical Atlantic sea surface temperatures are currently at a historical high, Atlantic potential intensity probably peaked in the 1930s and 1950s, and recent values are near the historical average. Our results indicate that—per unit local sea surface temperature change—the response of tropical cyclone activity to natural climate variations, which tend to involve localized changes in sea surface temperature, may be larger than the response to the more uniform patterns of greenhouse-gas-induced warming.

Much ado about nothing makes people think we’re about nothing.

Charles was mad about Camilla, for a long time. However, for some reason either he could not get approval to marry her or she got tired of waiting, so she married someone else, and Charles eventually had to find someone young enough to have the required heir and spare. Thus, Diana. Now Charles finally married Camilla - and that’s who he should have married in the first place, IMO.

re: #238 prononymous

remember, the frequency of storms in the north atlantic is a bullshit measurement. are storms increasing in frequency across the globe?

The anomalously strong hurricane activity in the
Atlantic sector during the recent years led to a
controversy about the impact of global warming on
hurricane activity in the Atlantic sector. Here we show
that the temperature difference between the tropical North
Atlantic and the tropical Indian and Pacific Oceans (IndoPacific) is a key parameter in controlling the vertical wind
shear over the Atlantic, an important quantity for hurricane
activity
. The stronger warming of the tropical North Atlantic
relative to that of the Indo-Pacific during the most recent
years drove reduced vertical wind shear over the Atlantic
and is thus responsible for the strong hurricane activity
observed. In 2006, however, the temperature difference
between the tropical North Atlantic and the tropical Indian
and Pacific Oceans is much reduced, which explains
the relatively weak hurricane season.

i’m telling ya…temperature differentials = storm intensity. i used to not believe in AGW, and i read a lot during my conversion.

global warming will flood us, but it will also reduce temperature differentials. we have enough bad things to lay at the feet of AGW. respectable climate scientists do us a disfavor by pretending that storm intensity is predictably one of the bad things.

Whether the characteristics of tropical cyclones have changed or will change in a warming climate — and if so, how — has been the subject of considerable investigation, often with conflicting results. Large amplitude fluctuations in the frequency and intensity of tropical cyclones greatly complicate both the detection of long-term trends and their attribution to rising levels of atmospheric greenhouse gases. Trend detection is further impeded by substantial limitations in the availability and quality of global historical records of tropical cyclones. Therefore, it remains uncertain whether past changes in tropical cyclone activity have exceeded the variability expected from natural causes. However, future projections based on theory and high-resolution dynamical models consistently indicate that greenhouse warming will cause the globally averaged intensity of tropical cyclones to shift towards stronger storms, with intensity increases of 2–11% by 2100. Existing modelling studies also consistently project decreases in the globally averaged frequency of tropical cyclones, by 6–34%. Balanced against this, higher resolution modelling studies typically project substantial increases in the frequency of the most intense cyclones, and increases of the order of 20% in the precipitation rate within 100 km of the storm centre. For all cyclone parameters, projected changes for individual basins show large variations between different modelling studies.

Sorry for my slow responses. I’m getting a bit busy here and might have to dig into this later.

While I don’t disagree with the good Doctor on his comments re: climate change and tornadoes, and this chart on CNN seems to back him up:

[Link: www.cnn.com…]

(go down on the left side and expand the Tornadoes by Month chart)

I would add a word of caution here. I’m a firm believer that GHGs are causing increasing intensity in all weather events, but it’s hard to model a single day’s events in a single state. I intuitively agree with him, but we have no solid proof.

Note also that the numbers on the chart may be affected by the significant increase in radar technology in ID’ing tornadoes. This is certainly food for thought, but not conclusive at this point.

However, like my friend Bruce Sterling, who addressed this subject in his novel Heavy Weather”, I think this will eventually be proven.

Sorry for my slow responses. I’m getting a bit busy here and might have to dig into this later.

No worries. But this is exactly the type of study that drives me crazy. How in the name of Zeus can the next degree of warming increase the models’ predicted intensity when the last degree of warming did no such thing?

I can make a model that does the same thing. Trouble is, it won’t square with the past 100 years. Neither will the model in this article.

And even if it does turn out that, despite what we think we understand (temperature differentials are more strongly correlated with storm intensity than temperature averages) and storm intensities actually do increase, say, 10% over the next century…so what? Are we seriously going to win anyone over by saying that “storms will increase in intensity by 10%, quick, save your children?

No one who is serious about convincing others of the need to confront AGW would put that in their “top reasons AGW is worth counteracting”. So let’s not give anyone a reason to think we’re not serious. We need to belabor the point that the basic greenhouse effect is rock-solid science and stop seizing on random weather events to prove our point, lest AGW deniers seize on random weather events to prove their point.

The fact that we can both cite credible studies on either side of this discussion is its own proof that this is a non-starter. And credible scientists, as i said above, are often shitty evangelists, or they’d pick up what i’m layin’ down.

Michele Bachmann wants gun owners on 2012 front lines

In a well-received video greeting, Rep. Michele Bachmann urged gun owners Friday to be as engaged in 2012 as they were during the midterm elections that gave Republicans control of the House.

“The right to keep and bear arms has to be protected because the Second Amendment is the final guarantor of all our constitutional rights,” the Minnesota Republican said in a pre-record message for thousands of activists at the National Rifle Association’s annual meeting. “In 18 months, we’ll face one of the most important elections of our time. In 2012, we have the opportunity to repeal the current president and elect a Constitutional conservative who will protect our Second Amendment rights.”

Yeah, because all the screaming that Obama was going to seize all the guns as soon as he was sworn in certainly came to pass.

We had some of the strangest weather I have ever heard of today in Lubbock; not especially dangerous, just strange.
At 5PM it was 101 degrees at my house, the wind was from the southwest at 40mph with gusts to 60, and visibliity was reduced to half a mile by airborne dust. I don’t know of any precedent for this and neither do the old timers around here. Extreme heat and extreme winds are not unusual but both at the same time, to this degree, is really unheard of.

My grandmother grew up working for every penny she ever had. Raised six kids by herself, working her fingers to the bone day in and day out. To her, clothes aren’t a commodity, they’re an investment. If you buy a shirt today and get mud on it tomorrow, that’s money down the drain.

She also absolutely refuses to borrow anything she doesn’t think she’ll be able to pay back. I can recall birthdays and Christmases in the past where she’s asked my folks how much a gift cost, just so she could reimburse them.

The bombing never shocks me so much as the number of attempts on the man’s life that failed either due to little things. Like the 20 July plot, which failed because he was shielded primarily by the thick table leg between him and the bomb meant to turn him into meat paste.

Yeah, after the 20 July plot, Hitler basically let Himmler and the SS loose to track down, arrest, torture, and execute anyone even remotely connected to the plot. One of the few that got to go out with any dignity was Rommel, whose branding as a traitor would throw the Wehrmacht into turmoil. He gave him two choices: commit suicide via cyanide and be buried a hero or be tried before the Volksgerichtshof, which would have meant the arrest and possible execution of his own family. He chose suicide and got buried with honors.

In some ways, his death isn’t surprising given how he was treated by those in charge. When he had a well-supplied and motivated Army, he was practically unbeatable, a true master of armored warfare. But he basically got abandoned in North Africa when Hitler got a hard-on for first invading Russia, and then Britain. And when the war become about defending Europe, he got overruled time and again when it came to deciding how the defensive set-up would be determined. It’s debatable to this day how involved he was in the 20 July plot, but it’s generally agreed he at least knew what was going on. That Hitler saw that as reason enough to force him to commit suicide is just disgusting.

Hitler was a sick man. Clearly stating the obvious here. It could be argued though that Rommel brought it upon himself. Blinding obedience only to be murdered at the hands of the man you followed. Nazi Germany was such a highly archaic system. It was almost like a 20th Century Roman empire of sorts. Primal. Vicious. Playing on human emotions, hatred, racism, bigotry, primitive, etc. The odd part is that it all happened in the mid-20th century and at first the 3rd Reich literally got positive “press reviews” and treated simply as an international oddity.

It was treated as a “success story” in the early years, as Hitler was getting people working again, the factories running, and putting Germany back on the map. Of course, like the Roman Empire, the Third Reich was only going to survive through war production and continued conquest. So much of the production was aimed at rebuilding the armed forces, rebuilding that the rest of the world was willing to turn a blind eye to due to the fact that Germany was becoming prosperous as a result.

re: #477 Targetpractice, Worst of Both Worlds

Rommel was superlative tactically and operationally. As a strategist, he was not good. His decision to keep pursuing the British into Egypt after Gazala was folly. He should have halted and returned his air support to allow the invasion of Malta to proceed. Had Germany and Italy conquered Malta, Rommel’s strength was have been greatly increased by unimpeded sea lanes.

Global society still had this odd fascination with dictators in the mid-20th century. Even Castro was lauded during his early years. Even by a few conservatives if I remember correctly.

True enough, like any famous general, he’s not without his flaws. See also: Montgomery, Bernard.

Pretty amazing to think that “the war still goes on” in the same region. The fire has erupted in North Africa. I’m really glad though that Egypt is seemingly under control now though. Including pledges to honor treaties with Israel. Still some instances of police brutality but that’s almost universal.

Looking back, it still amazes me how folks in the 50s thought that replacing Batista with Castro would lead to a prosperous and free Cuba. But we as a country have always seemed to have a fascination with “freedom fighters”…provided they’re not opposing us.

Yep. Or the underdog. Even if we don’t study it closely. All that counts is that he or she it the underdog. 50 years later Castro is finally relinquishing his power. But that was after he spent decades oppressing anyone who opposed him and having qualities similar to American rightists such as his oppression of Cuban homosexuals all the while the cool left wing Americans were supporting him. Yep. It’s almost designed to be confusing.

Careful, Gus. You’re going to put your “PROGRESSIVE!!!11” credentials in jeopardy.

And to be frank. Castro’s Cuba and his treatment of gays was far worse then anything American rightists ever accomplished post Stonewall which was the defining moment historically. Before that this assessment would be questionable.

Oh noz! I’m used to it. Che Guevera was an asshole too. Both he and Castro hated modern music — i.e. rock music. Which they so as a capitalist mechanism and all that jazz. Their hatred of the Beatles is infamous.

A lot of people on the left are always harping about the Council of Foreign Relations. They’re actually pretty cool.

LOL I just clicked a search on Twitter for #LGF. The lunatics are still Tweeting their craziness! So bizarre. I’ve never seen anything like this. The stalkers have bigger psychological problems then I first thought. I guess it’s cool thought that they’re doing something with their lives. Never thought about stalking people myself but I suppose that could be a legitimate hobby.

i iz tired. good night, good people-

Dang, I was tied up too long. I do have some comments about your last post. Should you desire to continue that conversation, post in this thread and we can pick it up.

I will say that I think you are too worried about the danger of overstating the AGW case. Deniers have been outright lying about the anti-AGW case for a long time and it seems to be working. Though, imo, we should stick to the well supported claims, even if it is just to be honest with ourselves.

Yea … I’m ready to move.

I’ve always lived below people in apartments, it’s only been a problem once, when a really dumb parent let their kid bounce a basketball indoors

I always wear headphones anyhow! I never notice ambient noise, I barely can hear the phone

Friday was such a nice day that people were walking about as if pleasantly stunned. Perhaps we should blame climate change. Saturday was unremarkable. No doubt that is climate change too.

If you think I am being dishonest or needlessly prickly, take it up with Feynman. If you don’t get the reference, it’s from a lecture on probability.

You don’t get to draw a circle around the results which interest you and then thoughtfully reflect on the fact that *all these things are in the circle* hmmm…

I nominate this “top scientist” for the 2011 Texas Sharpshooter award.

Scoff all you like, but I am not funded by anybody for my opinion.

re: #498 haakondahl

Way to miss the point.

Energy from the sun drives the weather we see on this planet. So it’s not drawing a bulls-eye around only the results that prove a particular point. It’s drawing a bulls-eye around all weather on planet earth since all weather is affected by the heat energy present in the system.

In that sense yes, your nice Friday is affected by climate change. So was your unremarkable Sunday. Had less energy been present in the system different results may have happened, but didn’t. Climate change models predict a higher probability of extreme weather as well (not just tornadoes and hurricanes). But higher probability doesn’t mean that on any particular day you will be faced worse than normal weather.

Of course, being familiar with probability I’m sure you were aware of that. Why you choose to twist that around is anyone’s guess.
