It’s Back to Nature with ‘Home Grown Funnies’

One of R. Crumb’s most popular weird masterpieces

R. Crumb’s “Home Grown Funnies” was first published in 1971, and has had at least 20 printings since then. It’s a solo work with Crumb’s unusual imagination on full display, featuring The Snoid From Sheboygan and a bizarre extended piece, “Whiteman Meets Bigfoot.”

I know this copy is from one of the earlier runs, but I’m not sure exactly which; the inside front cover says “Printing Number 8 7 6.” Anyone know how to interpret that?

The back cover contains a short story about “The Desperate Character” and his mad rage against the powers that be.

wlewisiii answered the “Printing Number” question:

When you have a series of numbers like that, the lowest present is the current printing. That is done to simplify changing the print run for the next one because all they have to do is remove (as in scratch off) one number rather than change the whole plate. This only dates from the rise of offset press printing.

So the Lizard Collection copy is from the 6th printing.
