It’s Back to Nature with ‘Home Grown Funnies’

One of R. Crumb’s most popular weird masterpieces
Arts • Views: 40,453

R. Crumb’s “Home Grown Funnies” was first published in 1971, and has had at least 20 printings since then. It’s a solo work with Crumb’s unusual imagination on full display, featuring The Snoid From Sheboygan and a bizarre extended piece, “Whiteman Meets Bigfoot.”

I know this copy is from one of the earlier runs, but I’m not sure exactly which; the inside front cover says “Printing Number 8 7 6.” Anyone know how to interpret that?

The back cover contains a short story about “The Desperate Character” and his mad rage against the powers that be.

UPDATE at 4/30/11 5:47:55 pm

wlewisiii answered the “Printing Number” question:

When you have a series of numbers like that, the lowest present is the current printing. That is done to simplify changing the print run for the next one because all they have to do is remove (as in scratch off) one number rather than change the whole plate. This only dates from the rise of offset press printing.

So the Lizard Collection copy is from the 6th printing.

If they were in the order '6 7 8' I'd say it was the sixth edition, however, I don't know about this.

Or sixth printing, rather.

Actually, it is Cheboygan that is in Michigan. Sheboygan is still safely in Wisconsin.

Agree. It's a strange numbering system compared to the normal printing sequence (" 1 2 3 4 ...")

Somewhat along the lines of the back cover...

One of the ultimate fantasies of the creationist/isolationist crowd - Abiotic Oil - is getting pushed more and more as oil prices go up.

The latest, courtesy of Forbes (a source which to me is just above AmericanStinker):

Deep Oil From Diamonds? Maybe, Says A New Report

The writer himself stays a bit skeptical, good for him, but he is going down the path of "TEACH THE CONTROVERSY"...

I expect this to continue.

If you are even slightly interested in comic art and somehow haven't seen Terry Zwigoff's documentary "Crumb", you are missing out.

I can also highly recommend The Book of Genesis Illustrated by R. Crumb. Some Crumb fans were disappointed that it wasn't his typical savage satire. I recommend it because it showcases his extraordinary talent for drawing.

LOL, Scotland:

Police in Glasgow moved in to clear Kelvingrove Park after a "street party" to coincide with the royal wedding resulted in "completely unacceptable levels" of drunkenness.

My new band name.

Which one?

Police in Glasgow

Kengrove Park

Wedding Resulted

Completely Unacceptable Levels

Completely Unacceptable Levels of Drunkenness

?

That last one seems more appropriate as the title for a composition, rather than a band name. Adrian Belew has a piece called (in an obvious ode to Salvadore Dali) "Joan Miro's Procession Through The Insides Of A Purple Antelope Across A Sea Of Tuna Fish".

I agree that Gaddafi and ought not tro elicir any pity.

But his grandkids and the other kids in the region who have no hope of escaping their prison is heartbreaking.

I know people in the region, I have been there a few times. They don't deserve the hand they have been dealt.

They are the biggest victims of Arab tyranny of all. They have been taught to hate, to reject freedoms and are subjugated in every sense of the word.

It has been recently discovered that thermophilic bacteria, in the sea bottom and in cooling magma, produce methane and hydrocarbon gases,[3][4] but studies indicate they are not produced in commercially significant quantities (i.e. in extracted hydrocarbon gases, the median abiogenic hydrocarbon content is 0.02%).[5]

Exactly- and as you know, Islam is not to be blame for the behavior of these beats.

The waters get muddied because Islam has been co opted by these tyrants- that is to say they have deliberately politicized the religion so that many people fail to distinguish between the religion and the politics.

When the state pays the clerics, it isn't surprising to those clerics tow the party line.

Further, by deliberately politicizing and blurring the lines, the tyrants blame criticism directed at them as religiously oriented and thus further alienation is developed and maintained.

12-15 of us get very well blithered on acid and go to the county fair...lots of light and sound and stimulation...people lost, hysterical laughter, weird stuff at every turn...so we all pile up and ride the Ferris wheel, it goes round once and I'm comfortable looking out over the sea of activity below, when suddenly all power goes out...total darkness across the entire fair grounds and I wondered...my GOD what have I DONE?...heh...then we heard voices yelling NO, DON'T JUMP...laughter...WHERE ARE YOU?...DOWN HERE!...etc...what a riot

Really excellent story!

Nato strike 'kills Saif al-Arab Gaddafi', Libya says

Colonel Gaddafi himself was in the large residential villa which was hit by the strike, the spokesman added, but was unharmed.

His son Saif al-Arab was killed, as well as three of his grandsons.

Journalists say the building was extensively damaged and one unexploded bomb remains at the site.

Saif al-Arab was the youngest of Col Gaddafi's six sons, with a lower profile than his brother Saif al-Islam.

Apparently, three grandchildren were also killed.

I always experience a bit of confusion when I hear news like this - I hate hearing about anyone getting killed, not a time to rejoice, IMO. On the other hand, sometimes people find themselves in a position where they will either kill, or be killed (or they are close to someone like that). It's an awful thing, any way you look at it. On the other hand, I would not shed tears if Qaddafi were out of the picture one way or another.

Anytime an innocent is killed in a war that war becomes immoral. All wars are immoral.

That does not mean the war is unjust.

Does the immorality fall on those who have no intention of killing innocents, or on the person who is hiding behind them?

It actually doesn't matter, I guess. I do hate hearing when it happens. Qaddafi needs to make some better choices for himself AND his family, though.
