2 | Mostly sane, most of the time. Sat, Apr 30, 2011 10:35:45pm |
And, BTW, I really hate those theories because:
1. Yes, the greatest writer to live could come out of a middle-class family in a small town. Why not?
2. He needed to be MORE than William Shakespeare? Being the greatest writer* isn’t enough? Why aren’t we upset that Isaac Newton didn’t write sonatas or produce art?
*Yeah, yeah, yeah, in English…
3 | William Barnett-Lewis Sat, Apr 30, 2011 10:36:35pm |
Language like that is why I laugh at those who wish someone else was “Shakespeare”; That understanding of the poet & player’s place in society would never occur to those who supposedly wrote his works. The sonnets are full of the same as well.
Birthers but class based instead.

I like these “No Fear” editions for teaching the bard -

Gives the original script plus a reasonable modern language “translation” for lack of a better word. They work well for teaching my 9 year old boy at least though I still have to gloss some of the earthier parts ;)

People think that era’s language is inherently “pure” or something because the KJV Bible comes from then (never mind they intentionally used outdated language, but hey!) so Willy must be prim, proper & high brow!
Yeah Right. There at the Globe. he needed crowds of poor low brow bastards willing to give up a silver penny or two for a laugh or a tear. And that he did so without surrendering the better parts of the language is the real miracle of Shakespeare.

I impose structure later, as a necessity
pictures must be cropped, songs must resolve to the key note, drums gotta be perfect, stories must be edited
But thats like later, that’s haver creativity is done.
step 1) create something solid, without a lot of mystery
2) create some more, save your work, play with what you made and take it in wild directions, experiment and discover
step 3) fix it so the bruises don’t show, make it nice enough to the client so you get paid
That’s been how it is for me since I waw 9 years old, for art, for playing in metal bands, for writing, for whatever

that works for my partner
he’s the GM, he builds the framework and fills it in
I start from “Twas a dark and stormy night” and I just let the horror reveal itself
Probably not efficient, probably isn’t as coherent as if I had a plan, but it’s the only way I can make writing fun enough TO write. Or paint! Paintings start that way too. Scribble nothingness until you latch onto a curve or a thing that looks like a torso
and then you’re off to the races! Some of my best work starts that way.

Case in point, the painting job I’m getting paid to do now. Sat down with the guy today, we went over the materials, his army list, etc, worked on a time table and so on. World Eaters basic colors are red, so we found a good red spray primer and thats going to take care of about 90% of the grunt work off the bat. What I’m working on now is the most efficient way to assemble and do the detail work on the remainder. I find it very relaxing to plan out and follow thru.

She sounded ignorant as usual… maybe I should write a Page about it. From comparing the effects of raising the Federal debt to the Holocaust, to being clueless about the history of polio… a real demonstration of all that is disastrous with her.
She is not a representative from Mars. The idiocy she spews is so dense that it has gravitationally collapsed. From now on, she will be known as the Representative from the Event Horizon of Stupid.

Black hole emits giant jets
The bubble, 1,000 light-years across, is being created by the most powerful pair of jets ever seen from a stellar black hole. The gas-blowing black hole, or microquasar, is located 12 million light-years away, in the outskirts of the spiral galaxy NGC 7793.

58 | freetoken Sun, May 1, 2011 2:57:07am |
re: #54 Kragar (Proud to be Kafir)
Well, yes, but the phenomenon observed is not from the singularity (presumed, by the way, as there is no way to directly detect if black holes actually contain singularities, and that there is reason to believe that if a black hole has angular momentum - and they do - then there is an inner surface below the event horizon… but that is physics digression.) Rather, what we see is from the release of energy as matter spirals down towards the event horizon. Once past the event horizon the only interaction with the outside world is via gravity.
As matter (usually hydrogen gas) spirals towards the event horizon a kind of accretion disk would form, would be very hot and thus be plasma, and would contribute (since the charges are moving) to creating a massive magnetic field that could direct some of charged particles along the poles. I don’t know if other effects like frame dragging might help focus the beams or not… time dependent magnetic fields in curved space-time which is itself rotating blows my mental circuits (especially this early in the morning!)
I will note your alternative in the Page write-up on Bachmann.

As a writer myself, I learned one important lesson from Shakespeare: Asses in seats.
He did not set out to become ‘the greatest writer in the English language.’™ He just wanted asses in seats.
He got asses in seats by writing stories that audiences like, characters they cared about or hated and imparting lessons about the great human dilemmas. He did that well enough that we still read him hals a millennium later.
But all he wanted was asses in seats.

Head in the sand over prosecutorial misconduct:
The Supreme Court has sent a disturbing message that it just doesn’t realize there is a serious problem infecting our criminal justice system.
[Link: www.law.com…]
The U.S. Supreme Court is oblivious to a serious problem in the American legal system: prosecutorial misconduct. Study after study has demonstrated serious prosecutorial misconduct at both the federal and state levels. For example, early this month, the Northern California Innocence Project at Santa Clara University School of Law released a study in which it documented 102 California cases, and 31 from Los Angeles County, in which prosecutors engaged in misconduct. Egregious prosecutorial misconduct has occurred in high-publicity cases, such as the prosecution of the Duke University lacrosse players and the conviction of the now late Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens.Unfortunately, the Supreme Court has not gotten the message. Twice in the past three years the Court has considered lawsuits by innocent individuals who were convicted and spent years in prison because of prosecutorial misconduct. In both instances, the Court held that the victims could not recover. Together, these cases send a disturbing message that the Court is shielding prosecutors from liability. The result is no compensation for wronged individuals and a lack of adequate deterrence of prosecutorial misconduct.

You’ll be amazed and appalled at the depravity of some of those fatalities. And they left the babalities in, and they’r egenius, they all have different comedic babalities. The amount of AAA work they put in that game is stunning. They’re handing the Japanese their asses on a skewer. Justin Wong and other tournament players have abandoned Japanes games like SF and such, te new MK is now their competitive game.
There was at least one fatality (hint, it’s enviro dependent, only works in the lava level) that SERIOUSLY grossed me out. I hope your kids are old enough to handle Kano being bisected crotch first
The industry is abuzz about the new MK, it’s completely flipped SRK (fighting game community) and it’s the talk of the devs in the bay area

The Reliable Magic Sniffing Dog
[Link: blog.simplejustice.us…]
At Volokh Conspiracy, Orin Kerr points to two new decisions on dog hits that reflect a monumental clash. The first, from the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals, is United States v. Ludwig, and it’s a stunner.
[I]t surely goes without saying that a drug dog’s alert establishes probable cause only if that dog is reliable. See id. at 1283. But none of this means we mount a full-scale statistical inquisition into each dog’s history. Instead, courts typically rely on the dog’s certification as proof of its reliability…Of course, if a credentialing organization proved to be a sham, its certification would no longer serve as proof of reliability. But the judicial task, we hold, is so limited: to assessing the reliability of the credentialing organization, not individual dogs. And in this case there is no suggestion that the California Narcotic Canine Association, the organization that credentialed the drug dog in this case, is all smoke and mirrors.
So the cops set up a “credentialing organization” to credential their own dogs and, shockingly, certify that they’re reliable. Imagine that. Forget Daubert. Forget even Frye, since the only folks whose general acceptance is needed are the same folks relying on the dog hits.

Genetic Music Project
[Link: www.geneticmusicproject.com…]
Since all genetic information can only come in the language of four nucleotides (A Adenosine C Cytosine G Guanine T Thymidine) it is fairly easily conveyed in musical form. Another way of thinking about it is that each and every one of us and all life on this planet is made of music.Back in 2008 my friend Liz Wade and I sent away to 23andme.com to get our genetic code read and from there we used the code to create music. Take Heroin Addiction for example: Liz simply assigned A, C and G to those notes, and assigned T to a F sharp. She then repeated the “opening” 10 nucleotides sequence several times. But that is just one way to do it. To be true to the music inherent in the sequences the only consistency that has to be maintained is that—as long as you’re within the same genetic marker—the nucleotides always have to be the same note, whether you assign A to A or A to G sharp.

Nothing exactly new, the fact that academical economics has been hardly able to account for anything going on in real-world economics (i.e. has a hard time as a “science”) just becomes apparent in times of economical crisis. For a methodological approach to this problem, see for instance Donald N. McCloskey: “The Rhetoric of Economics” (Journal of Economic Literature, Vol. XXI (June 1983), pp. 481-517) and Daniel M. Hausman: “Economic Methodology in a Nutshell” (The Journal of Economic Perspectives, Vol. 3, No. 2. (Spring, 1989), pp. 115-127). Also very instructive are the seminal articles by Alan Musgrave: “‘Unreal Assumptions’ in Economic Theory: The F-Twist Untwisted” (Kyklos, Vol. 34 – 1981 – Fasc. 3 , 377-387) and Milton Friedman: “Essays in Positive Economics Part I - The Methodology of Positive Economics” (University of Chicago Press (1953), 1970, pp. 3-43).

See, I find that all kind of funny. I’m less qualified to talk about modern academic economic thought, but, in many ways, I find a lot of current economic policy (And just about everything coming out of most politicians) to basically ignore even the most integral, low level concepts of microeconomics (I’m talking first month of Micro 101 here), never mind the less clear and more complicated macro issues. If we can’t get that much right, I’m not sure there’s much hope of getting any sort of broader monitary or regulatory policy right.

Instapundit….
SUCKER: Obama takes bait, embiggens Donald Trump. You don’t punish Donald Trump by giving him attention. A more experienced politician would know that. Nor is building Trump up good for Obama — Trump has actually hurt him more than all the others combined. Because, you know, Trump has actually been willing to criticize him without being afraid of the Big Media retribution.

Heh. The wingnuts are so easily manipulated that Obama might be able to keep Trump at the top of the primary polls just by talking about him. What a luxury to be able to pick your opponent.

I just watched Obama’s speech from last night. The best laugh at Trump’s expense was when Obama was still setting up the joke by saying he recognized Trump’s qualifications and experience.
The best laugh of the night, though, was when he said, “Michelle Bachmann’s running for president, which is kind of weird, as I hear she was born in Canada….That’s how it starts, Michelle.”

Texas Gov. Rick Perry laments lack of federal aid for wildfires
Irony…
What’s obnoxious is that we really do need that money and help.
There are a lot of counties being devastated by wildfires that don’t have the infrastructure to fight them. They’re sparsely populated and tend to rely on volunteer firefighters instead of the trained ones you’d find in larger cities. I’ve seen video footage shot by volunteer fire marshals of wildfires that they’ve had to just stand and watch because they don’t have the resources to effectively do anything about them.

Not quite.
Black hole emits giant jets
My resolve collapses…I just need to keep off social issues here and it’ll be OK, maybe.
This is one of these parsing science situations. The singularity itself, if there is one, is hidden behind an event horizon. Black holes are the ultimate lock-the-door-and-throw-away-the-key jails.
But just outside the jailhouse, there’s a riot. Any time any matter draws near, it goes into frenzied spinning convulsions. Some of it gets thrown wide, some goes at the event horizon. And fades…away.
So we can see all sorts of action around a singularity. But all we can fathom of what’s in it is mass, charge, and spin.

Exactly. I guess that means I just like him more as a song writer than a singer. Nothing wrong with that I suppose.
This version (yes, its from Shrek too) still stings for me. But that’s ok.

Well, I’m not sure how that harms debate? Not like some websites where poorly ranked comments are hidden automatically. Do you really care if a comment ends up in Top 10/ Bottom 10?

Palin to speak at Central Calif. community college
LEMOORE, Calif. (AP) - Sarah Palin is returning to Central California’s agricultural region to speak at a community college, a year after secrecy over her contract to visit another school in the region drew intense criticism and scrutiny.
This time, West Hills College officials say their foundation paid the Washington Speakers Bureau $115,000 to land Palin.

Up until 3-4 days ago, Tunisia was completely uninvolved, aside from housing refugees. Looking at the strength of the Tunisian military, I don’t think they could actually go in to do anything if they needed too. They only have 84 main battle tanks and 48 light battle tanks, for example.
