Top Secret Helicopter Revealed in Bin Laden Raid

A modified stealth Blackhawk?
US News • Views: 31,460

If you were wondering why the Navy SEAL team reportedly destroyed one of their helicopters when it malfunctioned during the Osama bin Laden operation, this could be the answer: Top Secret Stealth Helicopter Program Revealed in Osama Bin Laden Raid: Experts.

Before an elite team of U.S. Navy SEALs executed a daring raid that took down Osama bin Laden, the commandos were able to silently sneak up on their elusive target thanks to what aviation analysts said were top secret, never-before-seen stealth-modified helicopters.

In the course of the operation that cost the al Qaeda leader his life, one of the two Blackhawk helicopters that carried the SEALs into bin Laden’s Pakistani compound grazed one of the compound’s wall and was forced to make a hard landing. With the chopper inoperable, at the end of the mission the SEALs destroyed it with explosives.

But photos of what survived the explosion — the tail section of the craft with curious modifications — has sent military analysts buzzing about a stealth helicopter program that was only rumored to exist. From a modified tail boom to a noise reducing covering on the rear rotors and a special high-tech material similar to that used in stealth fighters, former Department of Defense official and vice president of the Lexington Institute Dan Goure said the bird is like nothing he’s ever seen before.

“This is a first,” he said. “You wouldn’t know that it was coming right at you. And that’s what’s important, because these are coming in fast and low, and if they aren’t sounding like they’re coming right at you, you might not even react until it’s too late… That was clearly part of the success.”

That big dome on the tail rotor is new. Even the MH-60g doesn't have that mod:

It was worth exposing the helicopter technology, to take out Bin Laden, if that was the cost.

3 PhillyPretzel  Wed, May 4, 2011 6:25:03pm

I do not know much about aircraft but what little I have seen of it indicates it maybe a modified Blackhawk.

I hope the debris is not helpful to our strategic opposition out there. Kinda sucks about the crash and loss of the aircraft. Maybe we can get the pieces back for cash.

Whatever the design, I'm glad it worked in getting the SEALS in and the remaining craft getting them out.

China got it. That's gonna be an issue.

I fully admit that I see China as an adversary.

The physical construction of the airframe isn't germane. They blew the damn thing up to destroy the electronics and crypto it carried. Nothing more. nothing less.

What of the surface coatings? Might be some tech there. I hope not.

I hear they're pretty good at blowing stuff up.

More here: Aviation Geeks Scramble to ID bin Laden Raid’s Mystery Copter

Based on Naylor’s reporting, it appears that a handful of special Blackhawks — probably no more than four — indeed originated from the MH-X program, but plans for a large, permanent unit to fly these birds was cancelled “within the last two years.” Instead, Army Special Forces aviators took turns training on the stealth copters in Nevada, possibly at the secretive base known by some as “Area 51.”

re: #7 ProLifeLiberal

China MIGHT have gotten a part of it.
If they really want it, they'll get it sooner or later.
Copying others leading edge designs, does NOT make for a creative strategy.

"There are probably people in the Pentagon tonight who are very concerned that pieces of the helicopter may be, even now, on their way to China, because we know that China is trying to make stealth aircraft," he said. The Chinese military is known to have a close relationship with the Pakistani military.

It's probably stuff that would be very hard to duplicate. From #11...
“The aircraft skin is interesting,” Bill continued. “It’s perfectly smooth, and I have a nagging hunch it’s something I’ve seen before, back in the late ’80s” — on an experimental OH-6 “Loach” scout chopper.

To him, the paint on the wrecked chopper appeared to be a “variation on the Invisible Loach — a light-emitting appliqué film which, coupled to directional cameras, will exactly reproduce the light and color patterns on the opposite side of the aircraft. Think of the aircraft as being made of glass.”

Stealth, on a chopper? I don't think so. Best I have read so far is perhaps ducting to reduce the IR sig from the exhaust.

// But then again. maybe they had a few of these.

It is a modified MH-60g. The tail rotor shielding confirms that. I'd love to see the main rotor tips. If you are going to quiet a copter, that's where you have to start.
Oh, Army pilots by the way.

I was under the impression that it was the avionics they want to destroy on a downed chopper. Is that wrong?

For those who (legit IMO) bitch at our massive defense spending I can only say it pays to win.

I don't have so much a problem with massive defense spending as I do with massive defense waste. Paying KBR $100 per load to wash soldiers' laundry is inexcusable waste. Paying Blackwater several times more than what enlisted personnel are paid to do the same job is inexcusable waste. It gets even worse when you factor in that the contractors answer to nobody and get to make up their own rules as they go along. And it's contractually sanctified, even when it's directly detrimental to the military's operations.

Warfare should never, ever carry a profit incentive.

Today in the Daily Oklahoman, an article by the AP discussed that picture with the President, Hillary with her had raised to her face, was when the helicopter crashed. The CIA had a feed that was 1 minute ahead of the Presidents and that they cut it off to them when they killed OBL. The story said they waited till night time to break the story till the Pakistani people woke up. It also stated that it was the brother of the courier that they first any info on and he was the one that brought them to the courier. Interesting article.

What would it be like to be in that yard (inside the 12 ft fence) when one of these choppers landed and released a torrent of SEALs?

That is one PPV I would bid high for.

30 ElCapitanAmerica  Wed, May 4, 2011 6:41:57pm

Whoops, didn't mean to use the abbr. if it was offensive, I thought it wasn't (was seeing more of it in the media) :-/

Are you kidding? They got the primary. They got the Intel.

That was a damn near flawless Op. Something will *always* go wrong. A helo's just a tool. Personnel are Weapons. The primary is a dead weapon. The Intel is a new weapon.

Understand that the American practise of spelling of certain words incorrectly is the result of a crazy person's influence.

He did to the English language what the Texas State Board of Education would like to do to the science of biology.

Insert more apt analogy as you like.

And a huge load of horse shit, all of it.

It will be quite some time before we attain an understanding that somewhat resembles reality. Months, maybe a year or two. I wouldn't get married to any particular account just yet.
