WaPo Poll: The Birther Movement Collapses

Hope for the human race after all?
Poll • Views: 34,904

A new Washington Post poll shows, amazingly, that President Obama’s release of his “long form” birth certificate actually did have a big impact on the Birther delusion: Poll: Number of ‘birthers’ plummets.

In interviews following the public release the president’s “long-form” birth certificate last week, fully 70 percent of Americans say Obama was born in Hawaii, a big bump-up from the 48 percent who said so a year ago. Even more say he was U.S.-born, or call that their best guess, for a total of 86 percent.

Overall, 10 percent of Americans say Obama was likely born abroad, down from 20 percent in an April 2010 Post-ABC poll. Almost all those who now say Obama was born in a foreign country say that it’s only their “suspicion;” just 1 percent claim “solid evidence” that the president was born elsewhere (9 percent said so last year).

Thank God for small favors.

A shame God had to waste his time on this, though.

Which is only going fuel the BS that "If he'd done this 2 years ago, the birthers would have gone away!" No, they'd have just done as they are now, migrating from one BS talking point to another, in this case the belief that OBL is either still alive or has been dead for awhile.

Jan Brewer bailed on them just in time. Was she tipped off?

6 Romantic Heretic  Thu, May 5, 2011 2:06:43pm

Not to worry. They'll find another reason to hate their President.

re: #4 Targetpractice, Worst of Both Worlds

Yeah. He really chose the perfect, perfect moment to puncture this. The hardcore birthers don't care.

And The Donald attaching himself to it really did help.

8 Targetpractice  Thu, May 5, 2011 2:07:31pm

But considering that birtherism is collapsing, what does this mean for Trump?

9 albusteve  Thu, May 5, 2011 2:07:51pm

Well, thank God we don't have to waste our time refuting ridiculous conspiracy theories now.

Napolitano, I'm talking to you, shitheel.

I swear, the one conspiracy I could believe in is that Donald Trump was paid off by the League of Sane People to romp around and show birtherism for the idiocy it is.

Instapundit and PJM are pushing back by trying to create the term "Racers" for people who accuse wingnuts of racism.
Good luck with that.

31 eastsider  Thu, May 5, 2011 2:17:43pm

Just asking, has anyone asked the level of importance of this issue in polls?

As in, "do you believe the President was born in the US" and a follow up of "How important is it to you that Barack Obama prove he was born in the US" or "How important is it to you that Barack Obama be a natural born US citizen?"

I feel like these insights could be revealing.

Well I am glad that it's collapsed because it was stupid. I hope those who pandered to birtherism are embarrassed for themselves.

36 Kragar  Thu, May 5, 2011 2:19:45pm

War Dog

Dogs have been fighting alongside U.S. soldiers for more than 100 years, seeing combat in the Civil War and World War I. But their service was informal; only in 1942 were canines officially inducted into the U.S. Army. Today, they're a central part of U.S. efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan -- as of early 2010 the U.S. Army had 2,800 active-duty dogs deployed (the largest canine contingent in the world). And these numbers will continue to grow as these dogs become an ever-more-vital military asset.

So it should come as no surprise that among the 79 commandos involved in Operation Neptune Spear that resulted in Osama bin Laden's killing, there was one dog -- the elite of the four-legged variety. And though the dog in question remains an enigma -- another mysterious detail of the still-unfolding narrative of that historic mission -- there should be little reason to speculate about why there was a dog involved: Man's best friend is a pretty fearsome warrior

It's not dead...it's just resting. Wait until the Osama bin Gotten high wears off and people start hoping for Republicans to take over the government and destroy America (in order to save it)...birtherism will be back...count on it.

Or, as we're seeing with Trump, it'll mutate. They'll claim that the "long form" bit is over, but now demand other documents, such as his college records.

He should just hold up his copy of Kool & the Gang and say, "It's the last record I have left from college."

Wingnuts are not racists. They are unfortunate, pitiable mentally ill folk whose treatment will not be covered by insurance, if they have their way. Ironic, non?

"Birthers" have simply jumped ship to become the "Deather" movement.

48 Amory Blaine  Thu, May 5, 2011 7:18:54pm

They are just too ashamed to admit it now. Like how nobody admits to voting for GW.

49 Pythagoras  Thu, May 5, 2011 7:22:39pm

Hopefully this means "peak crazy" has passed too.

51 Pythagoras  Thu, May 5, 2011 8:03:00pm

Well, I think Trump gave the birther nuttiness a bubble-like peak which ultimately helped bring it low. It's now way below critical mass and cannot sustain itself.

But the main point of my comment #49 was a pun.
