Wingnut Blog Fail of the Week: Obama Took Down the Ground Zero Flag

Flaggate
Wingnuts • Views: 30,832

One problem with living on the west coast is that an east coast wingnut nontroversy has time to start spreading on Twitter, get picked up by dozens of right wing blogs, and be exposed as a ridiculous fraudulent non-story before I even wake up.

The life cycles of these outrageous outrages are starting to be measured in minutes, but the Conveyor Belt of Bad Craziness just keeps on rollin’.

Today’s example: Jake Tapper of ABC News tweeted yesterday, at about 6:30pm (around sunset):

One minute to air and they decided to take the flag down from the live shot!

He included this photo of cranes taking down the large flag from one of the structures at Ground Zero in Manhattan:

Despite the fact that Tapper’s tweet happened several hours after President Obama’s appearance, when Tapper was setting up for one of his ABC News live shots, the wingnut echo chamber leaped to the conclusion that it was before — and that Obama had ordered the flag taken down because that’s just how much he hates America. So much, that he would remove the US flag from Ground Zero. The bastard.

Doug Ross hyperventilated: WTF at WTC? Obama Has American Flag Removed From Ground Zero Site Moments Before Photo Shoot!

Later, he added: “[Updated: or Perhaps Tapper Just Confused All of Us]”. Because that’s how tricksy the media are — they wait several hours to confuse right wing bloggers with innocuous tweets, knowing that those bloggers have no journalistic standards and won’t even look at timestamps if the story can be used to bash President Obama. Oh, wait.

Michelle Malkin put up a post titled, “Just wondering: Why was American flag removed from Ground Zero yesterday?” and then apologized, to her credit: No, Obama didn’t remove American flag from Ground Zero.

It also spread to Drudge Report, and to a host of C-list hacks like Weasel Zippers, who posted: Wow: Team Obama Removes American Flag From Ground Zero Moments Before Live Shoot….

That’s a Google cache link, because Mr. Zippers then deleted his embarrassing post with no word of explanation: Error 404 - Not Found.

And of course, there are many photos of Obama at the Ground Zero ceremony, with that flag prominently featured right behind him.

Earlier today, Jake Tapper tweeted again:

Bloggers who created a lie about the flag based on my innocuous tweet: please feel free to unfollow. don’t want my facts to become your lies

The really unusual part of this idiotic fake outrage is that these bloggers bothered to correct and delete their posts. But this is definitely the wingnuts’ Fail of the Week, because none of these super-patriotic patriots apparently considered the fact that US flags are supposed to be taken down at sunset.

They've been anticipating and hoping since before the election, to find some evidence of the President's true colors, that is, lack of patriotism, hatred for this country and the military, etc etc etc.

Even so, it's amazing to me that anyone thought this was the least bit plausible, that the President would have the flag removed before he would consent to give his speech.

May 10th, Frontline will air "Kill/Capture" - they've been working on this story for six months, they say. The timing is very interesting. This should be interesting to watch, especially given the events of the past few days.

Behind the strike that killed Osama bin Laden last week was one of the U.S. military's best kept secrets: a covert campaign that officials have credited with taking out thousands of Taliban and Al Qaeda fighters. A six-month investigation by FRONTLINE has gone inside the military's "kill/capture" operations to discover new evidence of the program's impact -- and its costs. Under the command of Gen. David Petraeus, U.S. forces are carrying out an unprecedented number of targeted raids using highly classified intelligence, aerial drones and Special Operations Forces. But is the tactic working? In interviews with Gen. Petraeus, his senior commanders and in rare footage with Taliban leaders and fighters, FRONTLINE producers Dan Edge (The Wounded Platoon) and Stephen Grey (Extraordinary Rendition) explore the logic behind the kill/capture policy and its consequences. Traveling into the lawless border regions of Afghanistan and Pakistan, FRONTLINE tells the story from the perspective of Afghan civilians, U.S. troops and the Taliban militants they are pursuing. After almost 10 years of fighting, this film examines the question: Will kill/capture help end the war in Afghanistan?

The timing is very interesting. This should be interesting to watch, especially given the events of the past few days.

According to the US Flag Code, the flag is generally required to be taken down at sunset, unless the flag is properly illuminated during the hours of darkness.

4 USC Sec. 4 and following.

Since the flag was in the middle of the construction zone, and isn't properly illuminated in that location, striking the flag was appropriate.

Tapper was merely lamenting that his background of choice was no longer going to be there (but the construction of the Memorial was still there).

10 Talking Point Detective  Fri, May 6, 2011 1:26:43pm

It's getting so that when you read "outrage" from "conservatives" on the Interwebs these days, there's about a 95% probability that it is fake.

I know that BDS was pretty prevalent a few years ago, but I find it hard to believe that was a dominant a driver as ODS is now. The basic partisan logic is the same, but Republicans just have greater ideological discipline. They are a focused group, and they are clear that nothing is of the same relative importance as attacking Obama.

It's really, really depressing.

Ha. This was a comment from that cached article. Poor Mike is trying to stop the hyperventilating by imploring them not to stoop to the level of the left.

Mike says:
ok guys, i hate obama, but this sounds like just a right talking point, it was obama or his team that took the flag down? haha no way. theres no caption, theres a picture of the flag coming down, this is stuff the left does to make the right look stupid. please dont stoop to that level. obama probably could have stopped it, but he might not even have KNOWN they were doing that. come on people

They keep going so he tries again....

this is partly whats wrong with us and the media, we see a picture and a caption, and we believe it and start arguing. get the truth guys, it is what makes the right better than the left. we usually dint stoop to this level.

And again...

@ weaselzippers, i love you guys i come here all the time. but can you take this post down? this is like some leftist propoganda they would use to demonize us republicans. this is not true, can you please remove it? for your own validity.

re: #10 Talking Point Detective

To go a bit further.

I can understand partisan loyalty causing someone to feel "outrage" about something that, if they were asked to be really accountable, they would admit really isn't "outrageous." That is how I viewed much of the BDS going around. Hatred of Bush, loyalty towards Dems, drove people to be falsely "outraged."

But it wasn't generally a conscious thing. It was loyalty operating at an unconscious level - where starting ideology unconsciously affected how people reasoned. This is human nature, and a well-identified phenomenon in psychology and political science.

But a large part of what I'm seeing now about Republican "outrage," strikes me as deliberate fraud. For example - sure, some folks honestly questioned whether or not Obama is an American citizen, but at a certain level there were people promoting birtherism who were well aware just how ludicrous the issue is. I think a lot of what we're seeing is not people who actually believe this kind of bullshit, but who are cynically trying to falsify "outrages." It's hard for me to fully control for my own biases - but I really think there is a different quality to what we're seeing coming from Republican loyaltists.

30 TedStriker  Fri, May 6, 2011 1:40:57pm

You know, for all of the charges and insinuations that President Obama's not a "real 'Murican", all the shit the wingnuts are throwing (and keep throwing) at him makes me question their patriotism and loyalty to the country.

That with the phone numbers says, that he was always ready to go to ground at a moments notice. In other words, the US was smart not to let anyone else know about the assault. Because if OBL had gotten any hint, he'd have been out the door within 5 minutes.

Quite simply, just another indication of how well the operation was planned and executed.

Probably to the nearest safe house. OBL didn't need to go far to be out of reach of any assault. just a couple of miles (if that much). So really, he didn't need much money, just enough to make sure if he got any advance warning, he could stay somewhere for a night or two while getting people together to move him to the next safe location.

Even after all this time I still can't comprehend this kind of behavior. President Obama is singularly the least outrageous political leader I've ever seen. He is a good family man (actually is), he treats everyone around him with courtesy that many do not deserve, his policies are relentlessly pragmatic (what is the closest I can get to a real solution based on political realities).

Some, even much, of this would have happened in the right wing echo chamber if Hillary had been elected, but Hillary would have been more genuinely polarizing than Obama.

How this excellent man can get up every day with the endless parade of this vile horseshit assaulting him is beyond me. Today it's "crush your son's testicles in a vise" Yoo saying he was afraid to catch Bin Laden alive cause then he would have had to interrogate him. And CNN treated Yoo as if he had something to say anyone would want to hear. [Link: tpmdc.talkingpointsmemo.com...]

Depending on where it is you're going, 500 could be quite a lot. I remember traveling with my friends ages ago to India and Asia, and you could do real well on the equivalent of a handful of Dollars or Euros a day in some areas.

And yup, the more we learn, the more the operation seems to have been well planned and carried out. The raving lunatics need to get a life and STHU as far as I'm concerned; Hell, even Al Qaeda (what little is left of it) confirmed the death, along with the typical assurance of "impending vengeance".

What does it say when the enemy gets it better than these guys do?

Even if they'll never say it out loud, I'll bet even Al Qaeda can respect that we left 22 people alive in that compound; it's going to make it just that much harder to paint us as monsters.

Yeah I have heard firsthand all about how having needles stuck into your hip bones is excruciatingly painful for a couple of days afterwords. How your back aches for weeks, blah, blah, blah...

Considering that I'm really not doing much of anything right now except some painting and patching on what was formerly my parents condo it seems like the perfect time to suffer some discomfort. It isn't like I'm going to miss work and get laid off...

Still don't know if I will have to travel to donate or even if I will be donating at all for sure, but if so they pay all the expenses, so worst case maybe I'll even manage to get a free sightseeing trip out of the deal.

But what really counts is that I could possibly be saving someones life, after watching Mom and Dad both pass from illnesses I was powerless to do a damn thing about I gotta admit that that is pretty appealing.

Just in case anyone here is at all interested in joining the registry or even just wants more info... (BTW to register you just do some cheek swabs they send you and return them postage prepaid).

You don't hear much about halachah, or rabbinical courts known as beit din, even though both have been a feature of observant American Jewish communities for years.

But some Jewish groups are now lobbying against anti-sharia bills that have been drafted -- possibly as a way to preempt constitutional challenges -- to bar any and all foreign or religious law in U.S. courts, not just sharia:

Mullah Ham (oh, the joys of English...) warns of apostasy:

Ken Ham: Christian Colleges Compromising Creationism, Bible's Authority

Answers in Genesis President/CEO Ken Ham has new research showing that Christian institutions of higher learning have gone too far gone down the pathway of secularism and they need to be either totally overhauled or scrapped in favor of new biblically-sound schools.

[...]

Hall warned that if Christian professors teach youth that it is OK to change the Bible to accommodate evolution or an earth that has existed for millions of years, then students get the idea that it is also OK to undermine the authority of the Bible.

Without the strong teaching of Genesis, it won't be long before Christian students and faculty will be changing the Bible to accommodate other beliefs such as homosexuality and abortion, Ham argued. The young earth creationist asserted that the issue is really about preserving the Bible's authority as 100 percent true. "Until you get back to that issue (the Bible's authority), then you'll never be able to shut the door [on those issues]."

[...]

When asked, given the data shared in Already Compromised, how long it will be before new conservative Christian colleges must be established to replace "compromised" institutions, Ham responded, "I think it needs to happen right now."

If existing Christian colleges are serious about reform, they need to institute top-down change, he said. "Let the presidents clean house," he proclaimed. Ham also suggested, "The boards need to have people prepared to take a strong stand."

Yeah, Napolitano's so far out there on the far right he starts to wrap around a little.

Napolitano: bin Laden was "killed on the illegal whim of the president."

Moments later, he added, "Osama bin Laden is dead. And the president seems to think he has the right to kill whomever he wants so long as the person is perceived as a monster and the public supports it."

And yet the judge also questioned whether officials are "telling us the truth or pulling a fast one to save Obama's lousy presidency." Later in the broadcast, Napolitano asked a guest, "Do you believe he's dead, or do you want some more evidence: a photograph, a testimony of an eyewitness? Something other than the words of a president whose words we have doubted before?"

From that story:

The data shows just how little "inspired of God" means with three follow-up questions. Respondents were asked if they believed in the inspiration, the inerrancy and the infallibility of the Scriptures. While nearly all respondents expressed their belief in the inspiration of the Scriptures (98.1 percent), less than three quarters of respondents (74 percent) affirmed their belief in the inerrancy, or total accuracy, of the Bible. Nearly 19 percent of respondents rejected the belief that the Scriptures are infallible or incapable of failing.

After the president's announcement of bin Laden's death, Jones told his listeners in one broadcast, "My friends, this is a complete and total hoax."

"Where is the body?" Jones asked in another show. "My White House sources nine years ago, on record, confirmed that he had been killed and was frozen on ice."

Listen here, "Judge"...if President Obama can have OBL taken out on "an illegal whim" for whatever reason he wants (nevermind the fact that the bastard was directly or indirectly responsible for terrorist attacks that killed thousands of people around the world), couldn't he do the same to you, Beck, and all of the other wingnuts with conspiratorial tendencies?

re: #103 EmmmieG

Everyone remember the fake MLK quote that was going around facebook after Bin Laden's death? Here are the new fake quotes going around facebook:

"Dear FB Friends: You can't find out who saw your profile. You won't see what you'll look like in the future. You won't know what that man saw when he walked in on his daughter. There are no free iPads. And you can't see the video of Osama's death... Not on Facebook. Stop clicking the spam links and exposing yourself and friends to virus risks." - Martin Luther King, Jr

Dear FB Friends: In 30 years your grandkids will see that picture of you at the cantina in Tijuana and ask awkward questions. That guy from your Freshman year of college who just sent you a friend request? - Yes, he will post wildly inappropriate photos and swear randomly on your wall. Your boss knows you just friended the CEO at your biggest competitor. And you really should not have forgotten that your mom is a Facebook friend. - Gandhi

A very dear friend posted that quote. I love her. I just sighed, and said that my regrets about Bin Laden all have to do with what he did with his life, rather than the circumstances of his death.

It's interesting -- there are some leftists who are losing it over bin Laden too. Michael Moore and Glenn Greenwald are both yelling very loudly about "extra-judicial assassination."

The difference, however, is that this viewpoint is not being widely accepted. There's a lot of pushback, and Greenwald and Moore are getting hammered on Twitter by liberals.

On the left, the crazies are the outliers, tolerated but ignored.

On the right, they're the base.

Let me see. There's this trrorist group called al-Qaeda. The leader of that terrorist group was Usama bin Laden. This same man was the mastermind of the September 11, 2001 attacks that resulted in the murder of approximately 3,000 people at the WTC and the Pentagon. He was also responsible for the murder of countless other around the world alongside al-Qaeda including many in Islamic ME countries. He was a very, very, bad man. Let "unchecked" this bad man could have killed many, many more. The opportunity finally presented itself to rid the world of this threat to mankind and it was taken thanks the efforts of many including the president.

I don't buy that. I can't speak for all lefties, but I don't have a problem with it even if it was a "kill order" or whatever they're calling it. There's no question that OBL was guilty. He admitted it. He reveled in it. He wasn't an American citizen—if he had been, that would be the only way I'd have a problem with it. If he'd been caught & tried in Saudi (as if  that would happen), the trial would've been short and he would've been taken out to a public square and summarily beheaded.

There are a lot of differences between President Bush and President Obama, but one of the most striking ones to surface in the past few days is the fact that, under President Obama, Osama bin Laden is dead. Reconstituting the bin Laden search team (canceled by Bush in 2005) in January 2009 was a pretty good idea in retrospect.

Michael Moore's biggest problem is he's overweight and not very attractive, so people like to ignore him, dismiss him, or write him off as a crazy commie.

Yeah, Obama deserves a ton of credit for doing that. I think people who wanted to paint him as weak or naive in foreign policy simply weren't listening to him or were hearing what they wanted to hear. My problem with Moore honestly is I find him intellectually dishonest. Like, I remember in Bowling for Columbine he criticized Clinton for "waging the dog" in Kosovo and then he went around and endorsed Wesley Clark who was the US general in charge of NATO I believe at the time. I don't hate the guy like some do but he annoys me.

Nah, that's a natural cat instinct. In the wild, when they can't finish the entire meal, they bury the remains to keep others from finding it until they come back and finish the leftovers. My oldest cat does it all the time with wet food: Eats a bit, then does the whole "burying" motions around the bowl.

Where's bin Laden now?

On the open ocean, however, flies and other insects are largely absent. And if the body is floating in water less than 70 degrees Fahrenheit (21 degrees Celsius) for about three weeks, the tissues turn into a soapy fatty acid known as "grave wax" that halts bacterial growth. The skin, however, will still blister and turn greenish black. Finally, crabs and small fish may feed on the soft parts of the face like the eyes and lips...

That works for me.

Nah, that's a natural cat instinct. In the wild, when they can't finish the entire meal, they bury the remains to keep others from finding it until they come back and finish the leftovers. My oldest cat does it all the time with wet food: Eats a bit, then does the whole "burying" motions around the bowl.

By now it should mean "put this in the refrigerator for me" to humans.

re: #10 Talking Point Detective

It's getting so that when you read "outrage" from "conservatives" on the Interwebs these days, there's about a 95% probability that it is fake.

I know that BDS was pretty prevalent a few years ago, but I find it hard to believe that was a dominant a driver as ODS is now. The basic partisan logic is the same, but Republicans just have greater ideological discipline. They are a focused group, and they are clear that nothing is of the same relative importance as attacking Obama.

It's really, really depressing.

Yes, well the difference is that Bush's incompetence was basically directly responsible for some 10,000 Americans losing their lives, either here or abroad, as well as nearly bankrupting us. We despised him because he was an intellectually lazy jackass. Not because we thought badly of the color of his skin.

The Obamas also invited 60 Minutes to come film the family making tuna fish sandwiches earlier this year–you know, to show what a regular guy he is. Question: Who the hell puts Grey Poupon and gherkins (don’t ask me what those are, I have no idea) in tuna sandwiches for kids?

Good thing the Obamas didný use cornichons; she'd be telling us how French he looks.

That's awesome. I've known way too many people who have been diagnosed with cancer and that you're giving someone the gift of life is too cool to even put into words. As for what they'll expect of you to collect the marrow, you might not have that much traveling to do - they might be set up to collect bone marrow at a NMDP-partnering hospital near you and then the marrow is couriered to its ultimate destination. That's something you could probably check on your own.

Again - very cool!

First time at this site. Thank you for the great article and posts. I was reading about the disgusting attempt to taint President Obama with the false accusation they write occurred the day he met with the victims families. Whiles President Obama was honoring the Seals and our troops in KY the crazy right was trying to destroy him. Dirty trick and lies. The tweet stories was so pathetic.
The good that I can see is some Independents and Republicans after the radio, written and TV coverage provided by the right will decide that the repubs are no longer the political party that represents them

Many right wingers, in an act of desperation to find new talking points to form the basis of their anti-Obama vitriol -- job growth stalling? ... dead, medicare repeal? ... dead, health care reform repeal? ... dead, birth certificate denial? ... dead, inability to take on terrorism? ... DEAD -- have reverted to the tried-and-true intellectually lazy and ultimately disingenuous tactic that has long been a favorite of Palin, Bachmann, Beck, Limbaugh, etc.:
When all else fails, make crap up.
