The GOP is not pleased.
And, it looks like Iowa GOP deep-pocket donors are not pleased with the choices they’ve seen so far:
Top Iowa Republican donors court New Jersey Gov. Christie to run for president in 2012
Some of Iowa’s top Republican campaign contributors, unhappy with their choices in the developing presidential field, are venturing to New Jersey in hopes they can persuade first-term Gov. Chris Christie to run. The entreaty is the latest sign of dissatisfaction within the GOP over the crop of candidates competing for the chance to run against President Barack Obama in 2012.

Interesting…. I don’t agree with New York getting a shuttle instead of Texas. Was New York even involved with the program?
And I am also curious over the denial of Federal aid for the wild fires. Is there some threshold regarding monetary damages?
But I would think that the Pres would not be that welcome by Texas GOP lawmakers even if the above were not issues.

I don’t think the feds should be hostile to Texas, if that’s what’s going on. I haven’t followed these stories so I couldn’t say.
Having lived there I don’t believe that many Texans would really appreciate any federal help should they get it. When it is something they want they have a mighty sense of entitlement and when it is something they don’t agree with it’s time to split from the union. But if it is within the law I think we should help them, appreciated or not.

Well thanks, but I just play what I’m listening to at this time of night as I explore the net.
First one was by Debussy - it’s a rerun from a few weeks ago but it is good night music.
The second is a little known piece by Satie called “Gnossienne N.3” as orchestrated by Poulenc.
I came across the latter while I was (and still am) searching for a very very well known piece whose name I’ve forgotten, which I heard tonight on a TV show.

He’s made exactly 1 good pick during his tenure, Granger. He got rid of the only decent coach they’ve had since Larry Brown, Rick Carlisle, who seems to be doing pretty well in Dallas. Syria Reportedly Detains Hundreds In Fresh Raids
[Link: www.npr.org…]
A rights activist said Syrian security forces are conducting house-to-house raids across the country, detaining hundreds of people as part of a widening crackdown on anti-government protests.Rami Abdul-Rahman, director of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, said the arrests are zeroing in on the demonstrations’ organizers and participants.
Monday’s raids were focused on the central city of Homs, the coastal city of Banias, some suburbs of the capital Damascus and villages around the southern flashpoint city of Daraa, he said.
The continued crackdown suggests that President Bashar Assad’s autocratic regime is determined to crush the uprising by force and intimidation, despite rapidly escalating international outrage and a death toll that has topped 630 civilians since the unrest began in mid-March, according to rights groups.
Activists reported that a 12-year-old boy died amid gunfire and shelling from tanks and security forces that rattled Homs on Sunday. They said authorities also arrested a 10-year-old boy, apparently to punish his parents, and filed charges against a leading opposition figure who is suffering from cancer.

On Sunday, Ahmadinejad denied reports that Amirifar had been accused of “sorcery.”According to Iran’s state-run Press TV agency, Ahmadinejad said: “Those who accuse the government of being influenced by superstitions are ‘joking.’”
But as recently as last Friday, the crowd at the state-sanctioned prayer service in Tehran chanted “death to opponents of the supreme leader.”
Long-time observers of Persian politics saw the chant, which was broadcast on state radio, as a warning to the embattled president.

Online retailer Amazon repays Indiana sales tax policy
[Link: www.indystar.com…]
Amazon.com is planning to open a third large distribution center with hundreds of jobs in tax-friendly Indiana, finding refuge from other states that have attempted to force the online retail giant to collect sales tax.
Seattle-based Amazon is announcing today that it plans to open a 900,000-square-foot Internet order fulfillment center in Indianapolis this summer but gave few other details. It declined to disclose the facility’s precise location.
Company officials said the facility will create hundreds of jobs. That figure could go higher, considering that an existing Amazon fulfillment center in Whitestown has 1,200 full-time workers. Another in Plainfield opened with 350.

Today, from Krugman:
[Link: www.nytimes.com…]
sample:
The past three years have been a disaster for most Western economies. The United States has mass long-term unemployment for the first time since the 1930s. Meanwhile, Europe’s single currency is coming apart at the seams. How did it all go so wrong?
Well, what I’ve been hearing with growing frequency from members of the policy elite — self-appointed wise men, officials, and pundits in good standing — is the claim that it’s mostly the public’s fault. The idea is that we got into this mess because voters wanted something for nothing, and weak-minded politicians catered to the electorate’s foolishness.
So this seems like a good time to point out that this blame-the-public view isn’t just self-serving, it’s dead wrong.
The fact is that what we’re experiencing right now is a top-down disaster. The policies that got us into this mess weren’t responses to public demand. They were, with few exceptions, policies championed by small groups of influential people — in many cases, the same people now lecturing the rest of us on the need to get serious. And by trying to shift the blame to the general populace, elites are ducking some much-needed reflection on their own catastrophic mistakes.

I read a thread at Redstate last week. It was one that crapped on AGW, saying that conservatives should deny that it is “science”, and should try to reclassify it as “faith”.
The comments thread was interesting, as someone tried to inject some rationality (and “science”!) into the conversation. He (I assume it was a “he”, but who knows) was unfailingly polite and civil, and was quite on point, but they shut him down anyway. Apparently the place needs to remain hermetically sealed, keeping all science and rationality out.
That’s the kind of crap the GOP has to get past if it wants back to the grownup table.

Pakistan Denies U.S. Access to Osama bin Laden’s Compound, Wives
Pakistan is denying U.S. investigators access to Osama bin Laden’s compound and the wives who lived there with him, a rebuke to the U.S. that is escalating tensions between the two allies in the wake of the raid that killed the al Qaeda leader.
Pakistan’s prime minister today spoke publicly for the first time since the operation about the raid and rejected accusations that Pakistani officials aided bin Laden, who had been hiding in Pakistan for several years.
Gaining access to bin Laden’s compounds and his wives are among the United States’ key demands to Pakistan and officials say the denial is another disappointment from Pakistan.

Between the rock and hard place - if Pakistan admits that they were working close with the US; the Islamists get pissed (and the nationalists only slightly less so); if Pakistan admits that they were in the dark and the US carried out the raid without Pakistani knowledge, the nationalists get pissed (and the Islamists remain pissed).
I suspect that those at the top in the Pakistani government really didn’t know bin Laden was there. But that doesn’t mean that others in the Pakistani military or ISI didn’t know he was there. There are also reports and rumblings that bin Laden and other al Qaeda dropped misleading evidence to keep the ISI and military off their trail.
Either way, it looks like the US opsec on the mission meant that the Pakistanis were in the dark up until the mission was already well underway.

If he has blocked your access to that piece of your land and is exerting control over it, and if he does that in an undisputed way for a long enough time (the time period varies by state) then he gains ownership of it.
It’s called adverse possession. You need to make clear to him that you retain ownership of that space and get him to concede the point.

He went on google maps and was convinced that the property line was 8-10 feet off so he demanded we pay $600 to have it surveyed. I think he was disappointed when the survey results showed the property line was exactly where I told him. He didn’t object to the fence until yesterday when he said he wouldn’t be chipping in for the fencing I already bought because it “didn’t add anything” for him.

Prime Minister Is Defiant as Pakistan Outs C.I.A. Agent
In an address to Parliament, Prime Minister Yousaf Gilani on Monday defended Pakistan’s spy agency and indirectly criticized the United States for Osama Bin Laden’s presence in Pakistan.
The prime minister’s statement was expected to give an accounting of what Pakistan knew about the Qaeda leader’s presence in Pakistan, but instead centered on how the raid by the United States was a breach of Pakistani sovereignty. He warned that a repeat of such a raid to capture other high profile terrorists could be met with “full force.”

The ISI is about to publicly look bad again:
Pakistan spy agency’s alleged role in Mumbai terrorist attacks to be revealed
The apparent involvement of the Inter-Services Intelligence Directorate (ISI), Pakistan’s premier spy agency, in international attacks carried out by Islamic militants is to be revealed in a trial starting next week in the US.
A former member of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), a violent Pakistan-based extremist group with close links to the Pakistani military, is expected to tell a court in Chicago that ISI officers were complicit in the November 2008 terrorist attacks in Mumbai, India’s commercial capital, in which more than 160 people died.
The trial comes at a critical time, with relations between Islamabad and Washington at a new low following the death of Osama bin Laden.
The hearings could acutely embarrass the ISI, which is suspected by many in the US and elsewhere of protecting the man responsible for the 9/11 attacks.
The trial is also likely to fuel pressure in the US for the high levels of financial aid to Pakistan to be cut.

No, not without a challenge. If you really don’t want it, ask him to purchase it from you and get that purchase registered.
The problem with adverse possession comes when you or whomever you pass it along to want to sell your house and property. Adverse posession at that point becomes a deed and title issue. It will eventually get resolved but it will take some time and money, usually when you don’t have one or the other.
If you don’t have the time and money now and he won’t pay for it, challenge the possession. Talk to an attorney about methods of doing so as what will work varies from state to state (and you should know your options in advance).
Trust me, letting him have it without challenge amounts to an easy now/more expensive later choices, even if you WANT him to have the property.

I was wondering what I’ve been missing by not having a Facebook page.
My siblings posting family pictures from the 70’s.
Long discussion between my baby brother and me about whether Jay-Z’s version of Forever Young is better, or Alphaville’s.
Extended conversation between three people in my life that don’t know each other about grammar and chocolate.
The cute thing my nephew said yesterday.

This morning I had 70+ FB friends. I dropped 40 of them before coming here. Meh.
To get that low I would have to disown cousins.
Wouldn’t that make the next family reunion fun.

Ding’d ya to get you out the door! /
And that got me checking a few things and found I’m closing in on 50k karma and 7,000 pages at LGF. That’s on top of closing in on 10,000 blog posts on my own blog, and ever so slowly creeping towards 1 million hits on the blog (which is not all that spectacular since it’s been up and running since 2005 or so).

Libya: Hundreds feared dead as migrant boat capsizes
Several hundred people are feared to have drowned off Libya, after a boat carrying some 600 refugees trying to reach Europe broke up at sea on Friday. The UN’s refugee agency said 16 bodies, including two babies, had been found.
UNCHR has said all ships using the Mediterranean should be ready to assist such vessels, as thousands continue to flee North Africa in inadequate boats.

As a rule, I limit my FB contacts to people I know from Real Life (TM) and wish to remain in social (and not just virtual) contact with.
And it is handy for communicating with friends and relatives who live on different continents.

Bryan Fischer on the May 21sters
There are other significant problems with Camping’s theory. One is that his biblical chronology is quite confused. His entire theory is grounded on the date for the flood of Noah, but his math is just simply wrong here. He has the Flood dated to around 4900 BC, but simple addition from the chronological data given to us in Genesis 5 yields a date of 2586 BC or thereabouts for Noah’s deluge. So he’s only off by about 2300 years. And that’s just for starters.

German TV: Bin Laden killed by ‘Star Trek’ terrorists
Sometimes our eyes are wide shut. In moments when we think we see one thing, we see quite another.
This often happens when our emotions are high and our thinking faculties subdued.
Sympathy, therefore, must be ladled toward the German news station N24, which was extremely keen to tell the world about last week’s killing of Osama bin Laden by the U.S. Navy’s SEAL Team Six.
Unfortunately, in its haste to offer a SEAL logo, someone at the station actually mustered the logo of the “Star Trek” Maquis Special Operations Seals Team VI—a bunch of nasty little 24th century terrorists.
We should all be indebted to the crack team at TrekMovie.com which managed to root out this story, originally reported by Germany’s Bildblog.
The folks at TrekMovie even persuaded a German friend to translate part of the N24 presenter’s text. It reportedly included the words: “They don’t have the skull in their emblem for nothing.”

There has been some batshit crazy news coming out of Germany lately.
Pro-Hamas Israel-Hate Fest in Germany
A German city funded and hosted a pro-Hamas “The Return Generation Knows the Way” conference Saturday, complete with Nazi terminology and incitement for suicide bombings.
The Hamas-linked anti-Israel Palestine Return Center in London, which has become a de facto center for Hamas and other radical Muslim groups, hosted the confab that in the words of the American Jewish Committee, has the single aim of “the denial of the existence of the State of Israel.”
…The Hamas conference in the city of Wuppertal also has adapted the Nazi slogan of the “final solution,” which referred to the death machine that gassed, butchered and starved 6 million Jews in the Holocaust, and has twisted it around to promote a “final solution” for foreign Arabs allegedly claiming Israel as home.

Texas Republicans complain they’re not getting enough Federal money…
Grumpy Republicans await Obama in visit to Texas
The refusal by the Federal Emergency Management Agency to give Texas disaster status, and the federal aid that goes with it, follows on the state’s ongoing fights with the administration. The state and the Environmental Protection Agency have been battling over permitting under the Clean Air Act — the federal agency even took over some state functions — and NASA’s surprising decision not to give Houston, home to the Johnson Space Center, a retired space shuttle, opting instead to send them to California, Florida and New York.
“You can almost make the case the administration has a vendetta against Texas,” said Republican Rep. Michael Burgess.

Perry, who in April 2009 famously suggested Texas might secede from the union, last week was urging federal action to help the state fight wildfires.
“It is not only the obligation of the federal government, but its responsibility under law to help its citizens in times of emergency,” he said.

Actually the plan is to hide out in limestone caverns and pray while the federal government handles the problem. Then when they come out they can claim it was a miracle and pretend they didn’t need help from anyone.
